    A. METHODOLOGY

    o Survey conducted face-to-face in the respondents home

    o Fieldwork: 10th of March to 25th of March 2012

    o Population: representative sample of population 15+

    o Coverage: 25 Member States of the European Union (EU27 except

    Cyprus and Malta)

    o Number of interviews: 25.591 (around 1000 per country)

    o Presentation of a total average of the 25 Member States weighted

    according to the size of the population in each country.

    CURRENT USE OF TRAIN: 55% of the respondents already used national

    or regional train. 10% of the respondents use national or regional train atleast several times per month.

    SATISFACTION WITH THE CURRENT RAILWAY SYSTEM: More than 6

    regular and occasional users out of 10 are satisfied with national and

    regional train (63% and 66%).

    SUPPORT FOR OPENING THE RAIL SYSTEM TO COMPETITION: More

    than 7 respondents out of 10 are in favour of opening the national and

    regional rail system to competition (71%). There is no difference between

    regular, occasional and non-users of national or regional trains in terms of

    level of support.NO CLEAR CORRELATION BETWEEN DISSATISFACTION WITH THE

    RAILWAY SYSTEM AND THE SUPPORT FOR OPENING THE
