Pride, Loyalty, and Tradition

Historical Sketch:

Bishop McCort is a private Catholic high school committed to spiritual and moral formation in a disci-plined educational environment. Our high school attracts academi-cally-motivated students from three counties surrounding our campus in Johnstown. Founded in 1922, Bishop McCort Catholic High School has focused on aggressively

preparing students to be leaders and to pursue knowledge through-out their lives. Campus Life:

With a student/teacher ratio of 11 to 1, each student is challenged to reach their potential in mind, body, and spirit. Enriched by Catholic intellectual and cultural traditions, Bishop McCort is a place that

throughout its history has promot-ed excellent teaching. Bishop McCort High School has more than 35 clubs with a broad appeal, including honors, social, community service, fine arts, and athletics. In addition, we ask our students to complete a minimum

of 36 hours of community service a year for church, school or commu-nity organizations. Bishop McCort offers 6 Advanced Placement courses and 23 Honors courses, more than any other school in our area. It is this curric-ulum that prepares our students to excel at the finest colleges and uni-

versities across the country.

Bishop McCort offers several unique and leading educational programs such as:

The Summer Excellence Program

Trips to Europe

Leadership Conferences Classes in the Arts at special

camps or at local universities. Athletic specialty camps

program has produced six profes-sional football players. The hockey team, boys basketball, girls bas-ketball and baseball teams have combined for 11 state champion-ships. Our sports teams play in the new 7,500-seat Johnstown Point Stadium. The high school presents critically acclaimed performances

in the Guzzi Performing Arts Cen-ter. The most recent addition to the school is the 14,436 square-foot Bach Wellness Center. The new center includes a weight room, fitness area, and an auxilia-ry gymnasium.

Kenneth S. Salem Bishop McCort High School Principal

January, 2013

Dear Friends of Bishop McCort Catholic,

Thank you for your continued support of the Bishop McCort

Catholic High School Athletic Program. I am pleased to present to you the 2013 winter media guide. This comprehensive guide

highlights all the Bishop McCort athletic teams that compete in

the winter season.

Our student-athletes and coaches have been working very hard to prepare for

another exciting season. I am very proud and thankful to our athletes and coaches for their commitment to our school. Our students do an excellent job representing

our school in the classroom and in athletic competition.

It is also just as important that our parents and fans remember that they also represent our school by how they handle themselves as spectators. Offensive

language or behavior at athletic events is strictly prohibited. Area schools, game

officials, and opposing parents carefully monitor our fan’s behavior because we represent a Catholic institution. We are expected to rise above controversial calls

or unwelcoming behavior because we realize the importance of representing our

school with class and dignity. I must insist that everyone adhere to P.I.A.A. guidelines for spectator conduct.

Thank you to our alumni, business partners, friends and parents. We could not

offer such an expansive extracurricular program without your support. I strongly encourage everyone in the community to support the advertisers in the Crusher

Classifieds directory.

Be sure to visit our new athletics website at www.mccort.org/athletics. You will

also be able to follow your favorite Crusher team on this site or by joining our

Twitter page at https://twitter.com/crushersports.

May God grant us another successful winter sports season.

Mr. Kenneth S. Salem

Principal

PATRICK HOLLERN — HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON AS HEAD COACH AT BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL

Pat Hollern begins his ninth season at his alma mater as the head boys’ basketball coach. Hollern has compiled a 147-60 overall record and 101-25 record in the Laurel Highlands Conference play in his eight seasons at McCort. Hollern has led the Crushers to the District VI Class “AA” championship in 2005, 2007, 2011, and 2012 and a runner-up in 2006. In 2005 and 2008, Hollern was named the Laurel Highlands Conference

Coach of the Year. The Crushers have won 10 plus games in the LHAC in each

of Hollern’s eight seasons.

Hollern is a 1994 graduate of Bishop McCort High School. In 1998 he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Saint Francis Uni-versity. Prior to becoming the head coach at McCort, Hollern spent three sea-sons as the head coach at Bishop Carroll—where he led the Huskies to the District VI Class “A” championship in 2004. Hollern still stands 6th all-time in career assists and 5th all-time in single season assists at Bishop McCort High

School. Pat was the starting point guard on the team’s first Laurel Highlands Conference Championship team in 1994.

Hollern is a full-time faculty member at Bishop McCort High School and was named Director of Athletics in August of 2012. He and his wife Ashley, reside in Davidsville with their daughter, Reilly and sons Peyton and Carson.

The Bishop McCort Youth Basketball Camps offer both boys and the girls entering grades 4 through 8 the op-portunity to become the next genera-tion of Crushers on the hardwood. The Camps are designed to provide a fun, challenging, and educational basketball experience through in-

struction and competition designed to address the age and maturity of the camper. Each player will be coached throughout the week with a staff recog-nized for their ability to teach basketball in an enthusiastic and safe way. It is our hope that each young athlete will leave our camp with the tools to become a better basketball player and the fond memories of a positive, fun-filled week.

JOHN BRADLEY ● HEAD COACH SIXTEENTH SEASON AT BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL

KEVIN COOPER ● ASSISTANT COACH SEVENTH SEASON AT BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL

John Bradley begins his sixteenth season as head coach of the Bishop McCort Crushers hockey team. In 2006, John achieved a career record of 200 wins with the Crushers. Prior to becoming the head coach, John served as an assistant coach and goalie coach.

John is a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL, after an outstanding scholastic career. He played the position of goaltender at Boston University and played professionally with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL) and with several East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) teams—most notably, the Johnstown Chiefs. During his career with the Chiefs, John was one of the team’s most popular players and was a familiar face

during McCort hockey practices, even during his playing days.

John is employed at Bishop McCort High School and is the owner of Ziggy’s Sports and is married to Amy Bradley. They are proud parents of Lily, a junior at Bishop McCort and Boston, and Cole.

Kevin Cooper begins his seventh year as a coach with Bishop McCort and brings with him many years of experience. Kevin has been involved with the McCort hockey program for over nine years in various capabilities.

Kevin is a native of Johnstown and his coaching experience includes Peewee through Midget levels, in addition to him serving as the Mite In-House program coordinator for the CCSHL for several years. Kevin is a Master Level coach with USA Hockey. He also serves as our PIHL representative.

Kevin is the owner of Coop’s Custom Interiors and is married to Donna Cooper. They have two sons, Matt and Mi-chael.

Mike Hudec begins his twenty-fourth year of coaching with Bishop McCort. He has coached at the Varsity, JV, and Freshman levels of high school hockey.

Mike is a native of Johnstown and his coaching experience includes a progression throughout the various ages of travel teams. Mike began playing at age nine in the local leagues and eventually participated in the Junior Olympic Tournament in Lake Placid, New York. In 1967, Mike was invited to the Johnstown Jet’s pre-season tryout camp. He has also played in various leagues while serving in the Coast Guard.

Mike is married to Sue Hudec and they have two sons, Bill and Mike.

2012 -13 MEDIA GUIDE LEGENDS AND GREAT S

Legends Section Bishop McCort Catholic High School has a rich tradition in athletics. Student-athletes, clergy, coaches, and volunteers have dedicated countless hours for the improvement of our sports program. The Legends section of the Media Guide recognizes a few outstanding individuals for their dedication and lasting contribution to McCort athletics. The commit-ment to Crusher athletics was established by our founders when the school was known as Johnstown Catholic. This ex-ample of service will be saluted in this section throughout the school year. Many legendary figures will be added in fu-ture additions of the media guide.

Leroy Leslie was a 1948 graduate of Johnstown Catholic and a standout on the hardwood for the Crushers. During his illustrious career, Leslie scored 663 points, which at the time was second in school history. He is one of eight players in school history to average more than twenty points in a season. In his sen-ior season, Leslie scored 36 points in a game against St. Joe’s, which is fifth in school history.

Following his career as a Crusher, Leroy continued his basketball career at the University of Notre Dame. During his three years on the Fighting Irish varsity team, Leslie set more records than any other man in Notre Dame basketball history up to that point. Leslie earned NABC Division I Hon-orable Mention honors following his senior season in which he led the Irish in scoring and free throw percentage.

In 1959, Leslie returned to Johnstown Catholic to lead the Crusher basketball team. During his five seasons as the head coach, Leslie amassed a 107-30 record and led Johnstown Catholic to two P.C.I.A.A. State Championships in 1960 and 1963. In four of his five seasons, Johnstown Cath-olic won twenty games and the team’s twenty-five wins in 1963 is sixth all-time in school history. Coach Leslie was inducted into the Bishop McCort Sports Hall of Fame in 1973.

LEROY LESLIE TEACHER & COACH

Between 1946 and 1955, Joe Majer spent his fall Friday nights roaming the Johnstown Catholic sidelines as the school’s Head Football Coach and his winters as the Head Basketball Coach. His nine years leading both the football

and basketball team’s are the second most seasons serving as the head coach in either sport.

As the Head Basketball Coach, Majer led the 1950-51 team to the school’s only undefeated sea-son (27-0) and the school’s first P.C.I.A.A. State Championship. During his tenure as the Head Coach, the Crushers never had a losing season and won more than twenty games six times. Majer’s 183 wins as the school’s Head Basketball Coach still stands as the second most wins in school history.

As the Football Coach, Majer led the Crushers to the school’s first undefeated season (8-0) in 1951. Coach Majer led Johnstown Catholic to a 39-31-8 record in his nine seasons as the Head Coach. His 39 wins is 5th in school history.

Following the 1955 basketball season, Coach Majer took the head coaching job at Conemaugh Township High School and stayed there as the school’s head coach for the next twenty-five seasons. In 1979, Coach Majer’s Conemaugh Township teams was a P.I.A.A. Class A State Finalist. Coach Majer was inducted into the Bishop McCort Sports Hall of Fame in 1973.

2012 -13 MEDIA GUIDE LEGENDS AND GREAT S

Pete Duranko, a fullback-defensive tackle at John-stown Catholic (now Bishop McCort), was the first Crusher football player named to the Associated Press and UPI All-State Team as part of the 10-0 team in 1961. During his illustrious career at McCort, Duranko set career school records with 3,234 yards rushing, 3,412 combined rushing and receiving yards, and 49 touchdowns scored. Known as “The Diesel” around the halls of Catholic High, Duranko ranked twice in the top five in school history for rushing yards in a season, the only player in school history to accomplish such a feat. In his senior season, Pete rushed for 1,450 yards, which is third all-time and he is fifth all-time with 1,350 yards rushing in his junior season. During his senior season, Pete was second on the team in scoring on the Crusher basketball team.

Following graduation from McCort, Duranko went on to star at the University of Notre Dame and was a part of the Fighting Irish’s national championship team in 1966. Duranko then played eight seasons for the Den-ver Broncos in the National Football League. Duranko has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and was part of the Class of 1973 induction into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame.

At a 2008 all-school assembly on the campus of Bishop McCort Catholic High School in the Guzzi Performing Arts Cen-ter, Bishop McCort’s Class of 1962 announced the dedication of the weight room in the Bach Wellness Center in the name of Pete Duranko. The Pete Duranko Golf Classic is an annual outing that benefits the Pete Duranko Scholarship Fund and Bishop McCort Catholic High School. In July 2011, Pete lost his courageous battle with ALS.

PETE DURANKO STUDENT -ATHLETE

Mike Patcher began his basketball ca-reer by leading St. Joseph’s School to the Pennsylvania State Parochial Basket-ball Championship. St. Joseph’s Elemen-

tary is the only team from our Diocese to ever win a state championship.

In 1965-66 season, Patcher led the Bishop McCort Crushers to the P.C.I.A.A. State Championship. The Crushers beat the PIAA champion, Schenley High School, on their way to a historic 28-2 season. During his career, Patcher scored 862 points which is fifteenth in school history. His 475 points dur-ing his senior season was second on the team.

Mike was also a three-year starter at the University of Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers in re-bounding for two consecutive seasons.

“Patch”, as he was affectionately known, left us at an all too early age but will long be remembered as one of the greatest Crushers of them all. His classmates created the Michael P. Patcher Jr. Memorial Junior High Bas-ketball Tournament, held at Bishop McCort, to honor his memory. Donations and proceeds of the Invitational Tourna-ment are restricted to the establishment of the Michael Patcher Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship will be availa-ble to any student wishing to enroll or to continue their education at Bishop McCort High School.
