A LA COMUNIDAD FRONTERIZADE AMBOS NOGALES

Me siento muy honrado de que el Departamento de Calidad Ambiental de Arizona solicitara mi participación en este calendario para enviar un mensaje a la comunidad sobre la importancia de conservar nuestro aire limpio. Estoy convencido que todos somos responsables por nuestro medio ambiente y de que todos podemos aportar algo. No tenemos que ser parte de un enorme proyecto para causar un positivo y notorio efecto, basta con ser concientes de nuestros errores y detenernos. Dejemos de contaminar nuestro medio ambiente; no es tan difícil como parece. ¿Quema usted su basura? Deje de hacerlo, ¿Su patio genera polvo? Cúbralo con algún material que disminuya este problema, ¿Su vehículo produce mucho humo? Repárelo, se ahorrará un poco de gasolina y ayudará a reducir la contaminación del aire. Estoy seguro que si todos en nuestra comunidad cambiáramos nuestros hábitos y redujéramos la contaminación que cada uno de nosotros produce, podríamos ver una enorme diferencia en un período de tiempo relativamente corto. Intentémoslo, hagámoslo por el bien de todos. Brindémosle a las generaciones futuras y a nosotros mismos un ambiente más limpio y por ende una mejor calidad de vida.

OMAR QUINTERO PEREDA

Omar, a native of Nogales, Sonora, has had a remarkable career playing both nationally and internationally. In 2002, he set a Mexican national record by scoring 87 points in one game in the Basketball Circuit of the Pacific Coast (CBCOPA) League. In 2004, he played with the Dallas Mavericks during the NBA Summer League. He has also played with several teams in Spain and has played professionally in Puerto Rico. He is currently playing with the team "Huracanes" of Tampico in Mexico.

Omar, originario de Nogales, Sonora, ha tenido una notoria carrera deportiva jugando a nivel nacional e internacional. En el el año 2002 estableció una nueva marca en México al anotar 87 puntos en un solo juego durante el torneo de la liga del circuito de basquetbol de la costa del Pacífico (CBACOPA). En el 2004 jugó para el equipo los Mavericks de Dallas durante la Liga de verano. También ha jugado con varios equipos en España y ha jugado profesionalmente en Puerto Rico. Actualmente se encuentra jugando para el equipo "Huracanes" de Tampico en México.

TO THE AMBOS NOGALES BORDER COMMUNITY

I am honored that the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality requested my participation in this year’s calendar to send a message to the community about the importance of keeping our air clean. I am convinced that we are all responsible for our environment and that we all can contribute something. We don’t have to be part of a huge project in order to make a positive and noticeable impact. It's enough for us to be aware of our mistakes and stop making them. Let’s stop polluting our environment. It is not as difficult as it seems. Do you burn your garbage? Stop doing it. Does your backyard generate dust? Use a cover material to reduce this problem. Does your car produce a lot of smoke? Repair it. It will save you some gasoline and it will help reduce air pollution. I am sure that if every member of our community would change their habits and reduce the pollution that each of us produce, we could make a huge difference in a relatively short period of time. Let’s try it and do it for everyone’s benefit. Let’s provide the future generations and ourselves with a cleaner environment and thus a better quality of life.

DON'T TOP OFF YOUR GAS TANK. The extra gas you put in your tank may evaporate into your vehicle's vapor collection system. That system may become fouled and will not work properly, causing your vehicle to run inefficiently and generate high gas emissions. The smell of gas while refueling means that highly toxic substances are in the air.

PLANT TREES. Besides producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide and other contaminants from the air, trees and other plants provide a habitat for birds and other wildlife. Some plants have very large root structures that help hold soil in place and minimize the erosion of fine sediments, which may eventually end up as dust in the air.

CONSERVE ENERGY. Almost all energy production and use involves some form of pollution of our environment. Therefore, saving energy means reducing air pollution. Turn off lights and appliances that are not in use, adjust the thermostat in your home, and use fluorescent lights instead of the incandescent bulbs.

AVOID UNPAVED ROADS. Stay on paved roads whenever possible. Driving on dirt roads raises dust, which contributes to haze and airborne particulate matter. If you have to drive on a dirt road, drive slowly.

USE GREEN ENERGY. Electricity generation is the dominant industrial source of air emissions in the U.S. today. Fossil fuel-fired power plants are responsible for 67 percent of the nation's sulfur dioxide emissions, 23 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions, and 40 percent of man-made carbon dioxide emissions. If possible, try using some type of green energy such as passive solar heating, photovoltaic solar panels, and small wind turbines.

KEEP YOUR VEHICLE IN GOOD RUNNING CONDITION. Air pollution from motor vehicles is the result of fuel burning in the engine. Harmful chemicals are produced during this combustion process and released as exhaust. These chemicals may cause a variety of human health and environmental problems. A vehicle that is well-maintained produces less pollution, is more reliable and efficient, and saves money.

BREATHE BETTER. The most common health problems caused by air pollution are: asthma attacks, reduced lung function, increased risk of respiratory infections, and shortness of breath and chest pain. To minimize the possibility of an asthma attack keep your home clean, avoid the use of pesticides inside the house, properly maintain heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, and refrain from exercising outdoors during cold weather.

STAY INFORMED. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) issues a Particulate Matter risk forecast for the Ambos Nogales region from October through March, since this is the period of air mass stagnation. The forecast will indicate if there is a low, moderate, or high chance the air will be unhealthy. The Arizona Department of Health Services, Santa Cruz County, and several Sonoran institutions are collaborating with ADEQ in this effort.

MANTÉNGASE INFORMADO. STAY AWAY FROM DUST. Dust is one of the major pollutants in the Ambos Nogales region and can be a health nuisance. The smallest particles (2.5 microns or less in diameter) can easily be inhaled and travel to the deepest parts of the lungs, causing nose and throat irritation, respiratory illnesses, lung damage, and asthma. To minimize the effects of dust indoors, install weather strips on exterior doors and windows.

DO NOT BURN TRASH. It is difficult to know exactly all the compounds that are released from an individual burn barrel. What comes out depends on the types of trash that went in, the tem-perature of the fire and the availability of oxygen; but particulate matter, carbon monoxide, dioxins, and volatile organic compounds are among the most common pollutants that have been found in the smoke from a burn barrel.

NO QUEME BASURA. Es difícil saber exactamente todos los compuestos que se liberan cuando se quema un tambo de basura. Lo que se libera depende del tipo de basura que se quema, de la temperatura que se alcanzó y de la disponibilidad de oxígeno durante el proceso de combustión; pero los contaminantes que se han encontrado más comúnmente son partículas, monóxido de carbono, dioxinas y compuestos orgánicos volátiles.
