As International President of the Sheep Dog Trials for2012, I would like to extend a very warm Welsh welcometo all competitors and spectators to Wales, and inparticular to the Vale of Glamorgan, for the 2012International Sheep Dog Trials.

The International Sheep DogTrials is one of many compellingevents taking place across Walesthis year supported by the WelshGovernment. It is a uniquecultural event that takes placeannually, but only visits Walesevery four years, and is thepinnacle in the sheep dog triallingcalendar where the title‘International Supreme Champion’is awarded.

I'm delighted that a community inthe Vale of Glamorgan is playinghost to an event that aims toattract thousands of visitors to thearea and the impact of thiscompetitive environment will,without doubt, resonate far andwide...

Croeso i Gymru, Welcome to Wales and on behalf of thelocal committee welcome to Redland Farm, Bonvilston inthe Vale of Glamorgan for the 2012 International SheepDog Trials.

It has been an honour to be Chairman of the localcommittee who have worked hard to welcome theInternational Sheep Dog Trials back to this area after anumber of years.

Thank you to our hosts, Tudor and Janet Harris, whohave welcomed the International on to their farm.

We have expanded the trials to include a Food andCountry festival to attract a wider audience and thank youto all who have supported.

All this and more would not have been possible withoutthe financial support of many local businesses, friends,companies and to our main sponsors The WelshGovernment, The Vale of Glamorgan Council and Tesco.Thanks to Helen, our local Secretary, for her efficient

I am honoured to have been President for the last four yearsand it is with great pride I welcome you all here to the beautifulVale of Glamorgan for the climax of my term of office at the2012 International Trials.

We held a successful Welsh National Trial here some years agoand are delighted to return to Redland Farm for this year’sInternational. I would like to sincerely thank Mr and Mrs TudorHarris and family for hosting this wonderful event.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the local committeeswho have organised the four previous Welsh Nationals for theirgreat help and support. Thanks too to Meirion Owen and HelenHowells for their work organising and securing funding for thisInternational, and also those who organised events to raisefunds or made donations.

Special thanks to Alun Jones (Selatyn) for his considerablesupport throughout my term of office. I wish him every successas he starts his term as National President for Wales. Manythanks too to E.L Morgan for his support. I also appreciate thehelp and support of the Society Chairman, Mr Jim Easton; ChiefExecutive, Judith Sheen, and the staff at the Bedford office.Last, but by no means least, I thank my wife and family for beingthere through every experience good and not so good.

Welcome to this year’s International.When I was asked to be the localsecretary I happily accepted the role, notrealising quite how much work it entailed!However, with the help of some veryknowledgeable and experienced peoplewe are finally here at The InternationalSheep Dog Trials, Food and CountryFestival 2012. I am especially proud theevent is being held at Redlands; myfamily home. Welcome to my home. Ihope you will Come freely. Go safely; andleave something of the happiness youbring.

The 2012 Internat ional is being hosted by kindpermission of Tudor and Janet Harris. Tudor Harris was bornand raised in Llantrisant, not far from Redland Farm. Hefarmed with his parents on a rented farm, milking 30 cowsand rearing 150 sheep. Aged 17, Tudor joined LlantrisantYoung Farmers Club and competed in stockjudging andshearing. He won the Royal Welsh shearing competitionat 19 and, to generate extra income, became a contractshearer for 20 years.

In 1974, Tudor married Janet and moved to a small holdingof 32 acres in Welsh-St-Donats. He started a 'pick yourown potatoes' business, The Super Spuds, in the late1970s on two acres of land during a time when potatoprices plummeted. The money raised from this enabled himto buy several pieces of ground. At 47, Tudor purchased the262-acre Redland farm and over the next 10 years, he andhis family (now five strong with the addition of childrenRichard, Sally and Helen) built that up to the current 500acres, a 500 ewe flock of Suffolk cross Welsh Mountainsheep as well as a pedigree Suffolk and Blue FacedLeicester flocks and 50 commercial cows, and they also havetwo holiday cottages. He won the championship with theBluefaced Leicesters at the Royal Welsh Show in 2003 andrecently retired as Chairman of the Wales and WestBluefaced Leicester Society.

For the past 16 years Tudor has hosted point-to-pointcompetitions (a form of amateur horseracing over fences forhunting horses) at Redland Farm. This is one of his hobbies,borne from his days as an amateur jockey. He hosts thePentrych Hunt and the Countryside Alliance point to

points. In 2012, Tudor was awarded his Fellowship of theRoyal Agricultural Societies (FRAgS).

The 2012 International is truly a family affair. Tudor's andJanet's daughter, Helen (Howells), is the Secretary for theevent and their son-in-law, David (Dai) Howells isVice-Chairman (and accomplished sheepdoghandler. Dai’s brother, Lyn, is a member of the 2012 Welshteam).

Dai and Helen tell us that training a sheepdog did not comenaturally to Tudor and he had not been graced with goodworking dogs. Tudor was very happy when Helen met Dai,and it wasn't long before he bought his first well trained dog,Jess, from Dai. Along with Jess came the purchase of a pairof gloves with 'come bye' and 'away' on them, as Tudor couldnot quite master the commmands. Dai is still training Tudor.Sheepdog handling is one skill Tudor is happy to leave to theexperts.

THE FOUR NATIONAL TEAMSThe sixty (60) competitors in these Qualifying trials comprise teams of 15 from each of the nations of England, Ireland,Scotland and Wales. Each team is led by a captain who was the winner of the National trial. All handlers are seeking to winindividual awards, but there is also a strong desire to see their nation be successful in the team competition. The prestigiousTeam Shield and, now through the generosity of GIlbertson and Page, the Captain’s Trophy are much prized awards. Thewinning team is that which gains the highest number of points in the qualifying trials, being a total of the 12 highest scores fromeach team of 15 members.

Hazel ThomasHazel currently works at the National Library of Wales on thePeople's Collection Wales project. She feels that her childhoodliving on a farm in West Wales influenced her choice of careeras a professional chef. She grew up living and working theland with the animals as part of that lifestyle. At seventeenshe embarked on a career in the catering industry by attendinga professionalChef’s course atWestminsterCollege in London.Her first job as aprofessional chefwas at theDorchester Hotelon Park Lane,where she becamethe first femaleChef to beemployed by AntonMosimann.Although she hasexplored manydifferent avenuesin her professionalcareer, food hasalways remaineda passion and shehas worked as anindependent FoodConsultant andEvent Organiser for many years and was involved in both theInternational Sheep Dog Trials at Gelli Aur and the WorldSheep Dog Trials at Llandeilo. Hazel was one of the sixcooks to represent the Welsh Government in Washingtonduring the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2009 when Waleswere the guest Nation.

Gareth RichardsGareth Richards was born and grew up at his family home inLampeter where hestill lives. Following aperiod studying at alocal catering collegehe worked for thecatering department atthe University inLampeter. In 2003 hedecided to open hisown business at hisfamily home where henow has a custom builtkitchen for cookerydemonstrations and asmall restaurant aswell as a small farm shop. Gareth is a firm favourite with theW.I., Merched y Wawr and the Young Farmers. Gareth is aformer Welsh winner on BBC Masterchef and a well knownface on S4C for Prynhawn Da.

Gloria DaviesGloria Davies lives on a farm inAmmanford. She started flowerarranging when she was 16 throughthe YFC movement. She went on tostudy City and Guilds in Flowerarranging and is a member ofSwansea Floral Art Society. Shepassed her demonstrators test forthe 3 Counties and South Walesarea in 1996 and is now a highlyrespected flower arranger and demonstrator. She competedat the Chelsea Flower Show in 2000 and gained a medalunder the title Stained Glass. She was invited by Channel 4'sHoward Jacobson to exhibit at the Tate Gallery in Londonrepresenting Wales where she created an innovative designin the Welsh colours.

Gundog DisplayElvin Thomas has been Training, Judging, Teaching and Breeding Gun Dogs forover 40 years. Elvin is now at the top of his field in the world of gun dogs and isrespected and recognized as one of the top handlers in the U.K qualifying to runin the Welsh Gun Dog Team. He is the Field Trial Secretary, Treasurer and aMembership Secretary of the Carmarthenshire Working Gundog Society. Elvin isan A panel judge for Spaniels. His judging appointments have taken him all overthe UK and Ireland, as well as overseas.

Awyriach Gundogs is based at Capel Dewi near the market town of Carmarthenwhere Elvin lives with his wife and family. Awyriach Gundogs is a familybusiness with all members of the family being actively involved with the dogs.Elvin trains retrievers and spaniels, as a hobby he runs his own dogs in field trials. He has won field trials with Labradors andSpaniels. Although his dogs compete in trials, they are used extensively in the shooting field. He demonstrates with his gundogs in Shows and Game Fairs all over the country including the Royal Welsh Show every year.

Sheepdog & Duck DisplaysWell known sheepdog handlers willentertain the crowds with their IndianRunner Ducks and highly trainedsheepdogs. See the ducks beingherded around the arena and overvarious obstacles. Audienceparticipation makes this a trulyinteractive display.

Wood CarvingThe British Wood Carvers Association (South Wales Region)will be in attendance over the three days. They will beexhibiting their members’ work and demonstrating the art ofwoodcarving - all with a common interest and differing skills.All work with the medium of wood but with different ideasand techniques e.g 3D sculpture, high/low relief work,lovespoons, whittling, chip carving etc.

No points are awarded for any phase of the work thathas not been completed within the prescribed time limit.Time limit = 15 minutes.

PointsPoints are awarded as follows:


The qualifying course involves the handler and dog workingtogether to move five sheep (three unmarked and two marked withred collars) around a course. There are seven components of thecourse, each of which is scored by the judges.

1. Outrun: In the outrun the dog is sent out either to the left or rightfrom the post while the handler remains at the post. The dog shouldnot stop until it has reached the point of balance behind the sheep,and should be far enough away from the sheep so as not to disturbthem. The point of balance is where the dog will lift the sheep inthe direction of the first set of gates.

2. Lift: At the end of the Outrun, the dog will either come to a fullstop or merely slow down.The dog will then approach the sheepsmoothly, cautiously and steadily, taking control in a firm and quietmanner. The sheep should move in a direct line to the first obstacle(gates).

3. Fetch: The sheep must be brought at a steady pace and in astraight line from the place of lifting to the first gates and thereafterin a straight line to the handler/post. If the sheep deviate from theline they should be brought back to that line as soon as practical. Ifthe sheep fail to go through the gates, no retry of the gates isallowed.

4. Drive: The drive is approximately 450 yards long over atriangular course and consists of two sets of gates throughwhich the dog drives the sheep. The drive startsimmediately the sheep have passed behind the handler/post and ends when the sheep enter the shedding ring.The sheep are required to go in straight lines between theobstacles and reasonable turns at the post and at bothgates are expected. If the sheep fail to go through thegates, a second attempt at either gate is not allowed.

5. Shed: Two unmarked sheep are shed (separated) in theshedding ring and held away from the remaining threesheep. The dog must show control of the two unmarkedsheep, either in or outside the ring. It is not a requirementfor the sheep to be driven away.

6. Pen: On completion of the shedding the dog will reunitethe sheep and the handler must proceed to the pen, leavingthe dog to bring the sheep to the pen.The handler will standat the gate holding the rope and must not let go of the ropewhile the dog works the sheep into the pen. When thesheep are in the pen, the handler must completely closethe gate before releasing the sheep. After releasing thesheep, the handler must close and fasten the gate and goto the shedding ring.

7. Single: The dog brings the sheep from the pen to theshedding ring. One of two marked sheep will be shed(separated) within the shedding ring and held away fromthe remaining four sheep until the judges are satisfied.

The following description is a simple guide to a trial course for spectators and those interested. A detailed set of Rules for Trials,set by the Directors of the ISDS, can be found on the ISDS website (see p27 of this programme for the link) and should bereferred to by handlers. Distances are approximate and will be adjusted for the field in use by the Trials Committee. TheTrials Committee is responsible for the course layout and conducting the trial in accordance with the Rules for Trials.

1. GatheringTen (10) sheep will be placed approximately 600 yards from the handler. One dog is sent to the left and one to theright. Crossing at the completion of the outrun is permissible, but dogs should remain on the side to which theyhave crossed and they should not recross. The dogs should bring the sheep in a straight line through the centregate (7 yards wide) 150 yards from the handler. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, no retry of the gates isallowed. Each dog will keep to its own side until the fetch is finished. The handler will remain at the post and at theend of the fetch will pass the sheep behind him/her.

2. DrivingThe handler stands at the post and directs the two dogs to drive the sheep 450 yards over a triangular coursethrough two sets of gates (7 yards wide), back to the handler. No re-try is allowed at either gate. Each dog is tokeep to its own side and the handler must remain at the post until the end of the drive. The drive is finished whenthe sheep enter the shedding ring. In the case of a short course when the fetch is less than 600 yards, the drive willbe lengthened when possible so that the total length of the fetch and drive is 1050 yards or as near to this length asis reasonably practicable.

3. SheddingThe lot of 10 sheep will be divided into two equal groups by either dog inside the shedding ring. One group will thenbe driven off and left in the charge of one dog.

4. PenningThe first lot will be penned in a diamond shaped pen by one dog. Once penned, this dog will be left in charge whilstthe second lot are penned by the other dog in the other pen.

THE DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP - SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBERThe Driving Championship will be held after the completion of the Supreme Championship. The handler stands at the post withhis/her dog whilst a flock of approximately 50 sheep is positioned in front of the handler in the shedding ring. The handler thencommands the dog to take the sheep around the post & drive them away at a steady pace in a straight line through an obstacle(9 yards wide) and continues to drive the sheep to a distance of 800 yards approximately or until the judges are satisfied.

Once again we are pleased to welcome four young handlers (under 21 years of age) to the 2012 International. The objective ofthe Young Handler Competition is to encourage and foster the development of young handlers by staging a competition at theInternational Sheep Dog Trials each year. One young handler from each of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales has beenselected by their respective National President. There will be a draw for the running order on the day. The judges are the fourNational Presidents, who shall select one winner and three runners-up. Please show your appreciation for these younghandlers.

T H E S U P R E M E C H A M P I O N S H I P

Please note that the following is a simple guide for spectators and you should refer to the information at the top of theQualifying Course description. The Supreme Competition is restricted to the 15 highest pointed dogs from the QualifyingTrials irrespective of Country or Class.

GATHERING:The first outrun to be right or left as decided by the Trials Committee before the Trial and all competitors will run out onthat side, the second outrun to be on the other side. The sheep are at a distance of about 800 yards. The first lot of 10sheep should be brought through the gate (9 yards wide) to a post which is 20 yards through the gate. The first fetch iscomplete when the sheep have reached the turn back post. The dog having reached the post will then be suitablypositioned to be redirected for the second lot of sheep (if possible unseen by the dog). The second lot of sheep shouldalso be brought through the gate and united with the first lot. Should the gate be missed no re-try is allowed. At the endof the fetch the handler shall pass the sheep behind him/her.

DRIVING:The drive shall be for 600 yards from where the handler stands in a triangular course through two gate obstacles (9 yardswide) back to the handler. The drive will be right or left as directed. Should the gates be missed no re-try is permitted ateither gate. The drive should be in straight lines and ends when the first of the sheep enters the shedding ring. The Driveends when all of the sheep enter the shedding ring. The handler will remain at the post until the first of the sheep is in theshedding ring.

SHEDDING:Fifteen (15) unmarked sheep are to be shed off within a ring 40 yards in diameter. In shedding, the sheep will be passedbetween the handler and the dog and the dog brought in to stop and hold the marked sheep. Should any marked sheepleave the shedding ring and join any unmarked sheep already shed off, the unmarked sheep with which the marked sheephas joined will be brought back into the ring and shedding resumed. Until the 15 unmarked sheep are shed off penningwill not be permitted.

PENNING:The pen will be 8 feet by 9 feet with a gate 8 feet wide to which is secured a rope 6 feet long. On completion of shedding,the handler must proceed to the pen, leaving the dog to bring the marked sheep to the pen. The handler is forbidden toassist the dog in driving the sheep to the pen. The handler will stand at the gate holding the rope and must not let go ofthe rope, while the dog manoeuvres the sheep into the pen. The handler must completely close the gate before releasingthe sheep, then re-close and fasten the gate.

SCALE OF POINTS:No points will be awarded for work done in the shedding ring or at the pen when either of these phases of the work hasnot been completed within the prescribed time limit.

TIME LIMIT:30 Minutes.

Note: The competition will be decided on MeritPoints, which are calculated after the last run.Therefore, there will be no posting of Judges’Points during the day.

Calculating Merit PointsEach of the four judges will rank each competitor inorder of Judges Points from 1st to 15th. The highestplaced competitor (i.e. ranked 1st overall on JudgesPoints) will receive 15 Merit Points. The second placedcompetitor will receive 14 Merit Points, and so forth.

If a judge has awarded identical Judges Points to twodifferent competitors, the Merit Points are summed andthen divided evenly between the two competitors. Forexample, if the top two competitors receive the sameJudges Points, the Merit Points for each competitorwould be : 15 (for 1st place) + 14 (2nd place) ÷ 2 =14.5 Merit Points each.

The sum of the Merit Points, calculated by each Judgefor each dog, decides the final ranking with the highestnumber coming first. For example, if each Judgeplaced the same dog in top place it would receive(15+15+15+15) = 60 Merit Points, the maximum scorepossible.

In the event of Merit Points being equal for any dog thefinal order will be decided by the total number ofJudges’ Points awarded. If these are equal then pointson Outrun, Lift and Fetch added together will decide.

The results will be announced during the prize giving at the conclusion of the competition.The competition will be decided using Merit Points.

THE WILKINSON SWORD: RHYS AND ROY JONESThe prestigious award for services to the International SheepDog Society, sheep dogs and trialling, the Wilkinson Sword,has this year been awarded to Roy and Rhys Jones, Llanafan,South Wales.

Roy & Rhys Jones are renowned for their long standinginvolvement in Sheep Dog Trials and exemplary service to thesheepdog community. Their farm, Llanafan Farm, which hasbeen in the family for three generations and stocks beef cattleand Beulah Speckled Face ewes, is home to the LlanafanShow Sheep Dog Trials. This trial has been running for 123years and offers one of the longest courses in the country. In1980 Roy took over from his father as secretary of this trial.

Llanafan has also twice hosted the Welsh National; first in1996 and again in 2009. Rhys and Roy were both keymembers of the organising committee for those Nationals, withRoy being Secretary for the 1996 National and Chairman in2009. Roy and Rhys have also hosted the Welsh qualifier forthe World Sheep Dog Trials, several Powys County Finals andSouth Wales Sheep Dog Trials Association Trials, All-Wales(North versus South) Nursery Trials and, in 2002, hosted theRoyal Welsh Trials when they were unable to be held on theshowground.

In addition to hosting trials at Llanafan, Roy and Rhys have, fora number of years, supplied sheep for the Royal Welsh Showand both enjoy competing in, and judging, trials. They are onlytoo willing to help host or organise trials, and are well-knownfor going the extra mile to ensure trials run smoothly.

Along with wife, Jayne, and two children, Roy farms Llanafan inthe same traditions of his parents and grandparents. Roy hasbeen involved with sheep dogs since he can remember, andstarted trialling at 17 years of age. His greatest achievement todate has been qualifying to compete in the main ring of theRoyal Welsh Show in front of the Queen in 1983. Roy enjoysparticipating in local trials and has also competed in the WelshNational, amongst other trials. He breeds an occasional litter ofpups and and delights in working them in the nursery trials.Roy is well known around Llanafan for having his dogs in thetrailer behind his quad bike.

Rhys farms his ‘share’ of Llanafan, under the new name ofBrynafan, with his wife Heulwen, and has lived at Llanfan all hislife. They have three children. Rhys started dog trialing when hewas about 16. His father used to compete in sheep dog trials,South Wales style with Old English Sheepdogs. Rhys has beenhelping to organise sheep dog trials since his teenage years.The late Elvet Jones and Rhys set up a Christmas trial whichran for about 25 years at Llanafan. It was open to competitorsliving within a five mile radius and they used to runapproximately 50 dogs. One year it was particularly foggy andthe competitors could only see three quarters of the way up thecourse. So once the dogs had disappeared into the fog, theboys letting the sheep out at the top of the course would shoutinstructions to the competitors to guide their dogs to take thesheep back down the course until the competitors could see thedogs again! Rhys has also judged many competitions includingthe Welsh National held in Newport.
