King William Neighborhood 1

Ernst Altgelt, the first to build on current-day King William Street, is credited with naming his street after King Wilhelm I of Prussia

Prominent German merchants originally settled the area building mansions that feature Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate

architectural styles It is a 25-block area near downtown on the south bank of the San Antonio River It was zoned as the state’s first historic

district, and has once again become a fashionable neighborhood

Guenther House 2

In 1851 CH Guenther & Son, Inc began his family-owned and operated business committed to providing the community with the highest

quality flour In 1859, CH Guenther sold his original mill in Fredericksburg and opened an even greater mill in the burgeoning town of San

Antonio He built an elegant home that is today a Museum and houses an award winning restaurant CH Guenther Pioneer Mill continues

to remain a family, taking pride in the manufacturing of their consumer products from trusted brands like Pioneer Brand, White Wings,

Peter Pan and Morrison Today, the company produces everything from biscuit mixes to gravy to frozen dough to fully baked products

El Mercado 3

The rich culture of San Antonio abounds throughout the plazas of Market Square with family-owned cafes, working artists and the largest

Mexican market north of the Rio Grande, also known as El Mercado From early morning until late at night, Market Square is alive with

activity Visitors browse through 32 shops at “El Mercado,” and 80 specialty shops in the Farmers Market Plaza Market Square is also the

scene of many Hispanic festivals where food and beverage booths spring up alongside Guadalajara lamps while the sounds of mariachi

music blends with the excitement of Mexican dances
