The Roscommon Minor Football Committee welcomes everyone here today, especially those from St. Dominics and Michael Glaveys, who are contesting today’s Minor Division Three Championship Final.

I’d like to congratulate both sets of players on reaching this stage of the competition. St. Dominics are appearing in their first Final since 2009, which they won after a replay, while Michael Glaveys last Final appearance was the 2011 “A” Championship Final, where they lost to Boyle. They last won a Minor title in 1981.

I would also like to welcome today’s Referee Tommy Gately, his umpires, the linesmen and fourth official.

Thank you to the sponsors of our Minor Leagues and Championships; The Abbey Hotel, Roscommon for their continued support.

In conclusion, I wish both teams the best of luck and I hope everyone has an enjoyable county final day.

Fáilte ón an gCaothaoirleachOn behalf of Coiste Contae Ros Comáin I take this opportunity to welcome you all to Strokestown for the Minor “C” and Intermediate Football Championship Finals. Today’s finals mark the end of the premier Adult and Minor Football competitions for 2013 and I feel that we are in for two exciting and entertaining games as these four Clubs aim

to bring success to their parishes.

The Intermediate final will be an intriguing meeting of North Roscommon Clubs. Both sides are seeing the fruit of investment in underage development over the past number of years and feature a good blend of youth and experience. Boyle are a side littered with players who have valuable Inter-County experience and earlier this year the team gained promotion to the Division One League / O’Rourke Cup for 2014, losing just once along the way. Many of the players have played in “A” grade Championships at underage levels and will hope to reach that level with their adult team mates.

The Tulsk Lord Edwards players aim to record the Club’s first win since 1984 and they will have learned much from their experience of playing against top level opposition in this year’s Division One League / O’Rourke Cup. I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate their Minor players, some of who feature today, on recently capturing the Minor “B” title.

Both sides will be well aware that last year’s Champions, St. Aidans, firmly establish themselves at Senior level this year. This will be a huge incentive to today’s finalist and I wish them well.

The curtain raiser between Michael Glaveys and St. Dominics promises to be another interesting game, and will reflect the high level of coaching and development work that is being undertaken throughout the county. St. Dominics last lifted the Brian King Memorial up in 2009 while Michael Glaveys have had a longer wait for a title but they have been competing at high levels in recent years and I expect a close contest.

As we come to the end of the club season in Roscommon it is a time for reflection and I wish to

thank all those who have looked at the problems facing their own Clubs and engaged with our Football Review Group who are aiming to tackle these issues in order to improve our games, Structures and Facilities at Club and Inter-county level. A special thanks is due to the Strokestown club for making their fine facilities available to us again today. The venue helped produce a wonderful atmosphere for last year's Intermediate and Junior “A” Finals and I expect that today will be every bit as enjoyable.

I wish both our referees Tommy Gately and Sean Feeney good luck today and again I wish to express the Boards thanks to all our referees for their work during 2013. A word of praise is due to the referees committee for their work during the year in Referee education and training. They will soon begin a programme of recruitment for new Match Officials and I'd encourage any recently retired players to consider continuing their involvement in Gaelic Games by becoming a Referee.

Once again the CCC has completed the senior, intermediate and junior on schedule despite having to face many challenges. Our clubs should realise the deadlines that have to be met to meet the demand of provincial competitions and it is not always possible to accede to requests from clubs concerning fixtures.

To all officials, team management, gate collectors and everyone involved with the running of our championships a special thanks for your work. Without the volunteers who give of their time and effort tirelessly during the year the GAA would be a much poorer organisation and your work is greatly appreciated.

I wish all our representatives in the provincial competitions every success and I am sure that you all will be worthy representatives of Roscommon clubs on the provincial stage.

I again wish all our finalists good luck today and I hope that we have two enjoyable games

Michael Glaveys GAA Club - a brief history

Michael Glavey’s GAA Club was formed in Gorthaganny in January 1956 by the late Peadar Earley. It takes in the Parish of Kiltullagh (Cloonfad, Granlahan and Ballinlough) and also some families from Gorthaganny. Glaveys compete in all underage grades from Minor down to U-8 for both boys and girls. The Club achieved their first Minor success in 1980 Rural title and in 1981 won their first Urban title, which would be equivalent to Minor “A” nowadays, by defeating Boyle in the Final after a replay.

The current Minor team features two players who were involved in the side that reached the Minor “A” Final in 2011 and although this group have not won any County titles there is more to football than winning and these players have developed well with many featuring at higher levels. Although we have a very small panel of players, these lads give great commitment to their club and always wear their club jersey with pride.

Gorthaganny native Pat Morris is the manager of the team and is a long serving member and servant of the club having being involved in various roles and positions as a player and a manager. Ruairi Comer is a selector with Pat and they are assisted by Michael Coll.

The Glaveys captain today is James Brennan from Cloonfad. James is a quality player who gives 110% in every game he plays and he is certainly one to watch for the future. James also filled the position of corner back on the Junior A team this year.

The club would like to wish the team and Management the best of luck today.

The Winners of the Abbey Hotel Minor “C” Championship Final will receive the Brian King Memorial Cup. The Cup was presented by the family of the former Kilglass Gaels player in 2007 and fittingly, it was first won by Kilglass Gaels. Past winners of the Cup were as follows:

2007 Kilglass Gaels2008 Kilmore2009 St Dominics2010 Kilglass Gaels2011 Ballinameen2012 KIlbride

St. Dominics - a brief history

The modern parish of Knockcroghery comprises the ancient parishes of Kilmain, Killenvoy, St.Johns and Rahara. Gaelic Games would appear to have been divided along similar parish lines since the foundation of the GAA in the area and probably long before. St. Josephs and St. Patricks amalgamated in 1973. At this time Dominic Conway of Ballymurray was ordained Bishop of Elphin and in his honour the new Club was named St. Dominics.

Today, St. Dominics is a “dual club” participating in both Football and Hurling at Senior and Minor level, Scór (Scór na nÓg, Scór Sinsear), Camogie and Ladies Football.

The St. Dominics’s Crest, designed by Siobhan Weir represents features of the area. The Oak leaf - The Oak wood in St.Johns, The Windmill – Rahara, The Clay Pipe - The old pipe industry for which Knockcroghery is famous,The Cup - The Sam Maguire that came to Knockcroghery on two occasions.

The Minor team in today’s final is managed by Willie Doyle and Sean O’Beirne who have been involved in underage system with St Dominics for a number of years. Willie has managed a number of U12 teams to titles with St Dominics and Sean has been involved with this team since U14. This team competed in Division 2 at U16 level. This year the team, led and captained by Roscommon Minor player Senan Farrell, has qualified for the league semi-finals despite some mixed results, having missed some key players through injury for the Quarter’s & Semi’s but have been fortunate to count on the U16’s players.

Boyle GAA Club HistoryWhile not at the highest echelons in the roll of honour of County Title winners, Boyle GAA Club has a long and proud tradition and it has contributed immensely to Gaelic Games. Boyle proudly proclaims that the Roscommon County Board was founded in the town in 1889, a mere five years after Cumann Lúthchleas Gael was established. Boyle produced the first President of the fledgling County Board in Jasper Tully, the then proprietor of the Roscommon Herald. His brother G.W. Tully became the first County Secretary and to complete a clean sweep for Boyle, another native James Lindsay became County Treasurer. The official records of Roscommon GAA show that Boyle won the county senior title in 1890, thus getting the Club off to a great start. Its only other senior title was won in 1927 when the game was particularly strong mainly due to the presence of an Irish Army Barracks in the town.

In the first few decades there were a number of clubs in Boyle Parish, including Owen Roes, Democrats, Sheegora and Tawnytaskin. The multiplicity of clubs perhaps militated against greater success in those years. A Junior Championship was won in 1926 (although played in 1927—the same year as our last senior title). We had notable success at minor level in the thirties when we won titles in 1931, 1938 and 1939. We had to wait until 2011 to taste minor success again when we achieved the Division 1 league and championship double. The minor team of the late thirties produced perhaps Boyle’s greatest footballer John Joe Nerney, our only All Ireland senior medallist. John Joe, now in his early nineties, is our Club President and was County Board President 2009-2011.

Boyle won a County Junior title in 1964 with a team that included Pat Clarke and Pat and John Nicholson, all of whom went on to win All Ireland U21 medals with Roscommon in 1966. That 1964 panel also included the aforementioned John Joe Nerney. That 1964 win saw the team promoted to senior. Sadly we didn’t have the necessary strength in depth and we reverted to junior in 1968.

The seventies saw the beginning of structured underage development in which teams in various age groups reached county finals albeit without achieving ultimate success. The introduction of the intermediate grade provided greater opportunity to play at a higher level and we made a major breakthrough in 1983 when we won the County Intermediate title with a Sean Young managed team that included among its ranks players such as Gerry O’Dowd, Dessie McLoughlin, Kit O’Connor, Sean Daly (RIP), Richie Fitzpatrick, Gerry Nerney and Gary Wynne, all of whom wore county jersies at various levels. Gary had already captained the Roscommon U21 team that lost narrowly to Donegal in the 1981 All Ireland Final. The next intermediate title was won in 1994 by an emerging team that were managed again by Sean Young and captained by Gary Wynne. Among the players on this panel to play County were Gerry Cregg and Stephen Bohan and Niall O’Donoghue (also played for Dublin). Boyle also reached the County Junior Final in 1994 with an Aidan Lavin led team. We had to wait until 2005 for our next Intermediate title when we beat Kilmore with a team that included David Casey, the O’Donoghue brothers, Stephen Tonra and Aaron O’Connor among others.

Boyle has had its share of success at underage level in the past decade, culminating with our 2011 Minor title. We have produced many talented players from our underage academy in recent times who have represented Roscommon at various age levels, including Cian Smith and Ciaran Cox (All Ireland Minor medal winner 2006), Damien Keenehan, David Casey, Sean Purcell, Enda and Donie Smith, Tadhg Lowe, Tadhg McKenna and Evan McGrath.

We have worked hard at administrative level to provide the best possible facilities for our players and supporters. We have owned our beloved Abbey Park since the thirties. It was revamped in the late seventies when dressing rooms were provided. The pitch was reconstructed and reopened by the late Dermot Earley in 2005. A new clubroom, incorporating 4 Dressing Rooms, meeting room, shower and toilet facilities, was constructed in 2010 and opened by John Joe Nerney and Gerry O’Malley. We subsequently won the Club Grounds of the Year award in 2011. All of these progressions would not have been possible without the financial support of our loyal and generous sponsors and those who support of various fundraising efforts and our Club Lotto draw. We especially thank today our long time intermediate team sponsor McGovern Directional Drilling.

It’s a family affairby Darragh Kelly

‘C’mon Tulsk!’ – it’s a common refrain I grew up with, but didn’t hear enough of in my later years. Yet this year, the cry has been irresistible, getting louder and more frequent, particularly in this year of great promise and indeed harvest for our club.

It’s often occurred to me – what is that uniqueness of the GAA, those bonds that unite people of different backgrounds, political affiliations or none that merge as one united whole, of getting behind the team, the club and most importantly, the players when it really matters?

Why? I suppose Tulsk is no different from any other club but for me, there is one simple answer – family bonds. Looking at the recent history of our club reveals the dominance of family names over and over – families like the Beirne’s, Brady’s, Callaghan’s, Connor’s, Lenihan’s, Mannion’s, Vesey’s and many, many others, too many to mention here, are deeply imbedded into the history of our club.

I can’t say my own family links are stronger than, or as strong as any of the aforementioned families. I can claim some, despite my all too brief ‘career’ as a footballer of limited means – my uncle Arthur won an All-Ireland doubles medal in handball, with (irony of ironies) Seamie Gaughran from Boyle in Croke Park in 1939, when other events of a far graver nature were happening across the globe.

My father Donal, also played handball and recalls with fondness some of the games he played in the old handball alley in the village. Today, that tradition continues with the sport being played in a new indoor arena, beside the club’s grounds. Not only that but new champions continue to emerge, as earlier this year Tulsk won their own county doubles title in handball.

It’s understandable that on a day like today, thoughts turn to the past and to memories, so many of them. My own memories (and each has their own particular recollections) are linked with my family. Of going to games in my late uncle James’s blue Talbot car in what was effectively an ‘ashtray on wheels’ with the smell of Sweet Afton and Major cigarettes wafting through every crevice!

It’s funny, but history does really repeat itself. My memories are still vivid and real and in particular, of that great year of 1984, the year the club last captured the Intermediate title. My uncle James was not one to say too much, but would utter the words ‘yes indeed’ and chuckle quietly to himself whenever Tulsk were victorious in those days.

James had a particular fondness for ‘the Doctor’, not the medical type, you understand, but one ‘Doctor Kearney’ he of the class of ’84 with the flowing locks that looked like a cross between Dr. Doolittle and Rasputin – with apologies to Frank Kearney for that!

There were also great battles of that time with St. Barry’s and even greater battles with St. Croan’s, who Tulsk eventually overcame in that replayed decider by a single point after extra time. And still the memories come back, of Haulie Beirne lifting the Cup and having the grace and the presence of mind, amid all the jubilation, of remembering the late Phil Gannon, whose death had occurred a few weeks previously.

And there are other memories, the totemic, late great Gerry Beirne rising into the clouds to collect another high ball; of Pat Burke on the edge of the square, netminder Val Beirne and of many others, too many to mention.

There were great days, of a beautiful summer, of the Olympic Games in Los Angelus and John Treacy winning the silver medal in the marathon and of the GAA’s centenary year and the local ‘la na gClub’ celebrations of that year.

Better still, there were the exciting plans of the club’s new pitch development, the dream that became a reality later the following year and of huge crowds attending fundraising events in Lohan’s and in Uncle James’ Pub during that time.

Today Tulsk will line out aiming to recapture the Intermediate title with Boyle standing in their way. We travel as supporters of the ‘maroon and white’, Lord Edward’s own modern day rebels, hoping the team can emulate the many success of this year, like the club’s Minors, U-14’s and U-16’s. That’s not forgetting the great success of our club’s ladies footballers and camogie teams either.

Like in 1984, this summer wasn’t half bad! And the club, in a neat link with history, have hatched plans to develop new training grounds and pitch refurbishment. No longer will players have to chase wild cattle off the playing surface or jink around cattle manure like generations who played in Lisalway and ‘Quigley’s field’ in the past!

Today, I will travel to Strokestown with my father, both us of quietly confident of seeing a Tulsk win, like countless other families. On a day like today, we spare a thought for those no longer with us, in the big pitch up in the sky but no doubt looking on and inspiring the players of today.

Spare a thought too for the Tulsk people dotted around the globe anxiously awaiting news of the game. Despite the immediacy of social media, they too will feel far away from today’s game, but yet very close to the action.

Like in 1984, it’s time for new heroes, for the players of today to inspire the young folk of the parish and to stand on the shoulders of the giants of Tulsk players of yesteryear – just like the players of 1984 inspired my generation. Time for new heroes – c’mon Tulsk!

Other Members of the Tulsk Lord Edwards Panel not listed on today’s teamsheet are:Ryan Larkin, Rathcroghan; David McNamara, Kilmurray; Patrick McCormack, Ardikillan;

Enda Kelly, Kilmurray and Brian McGarry, Ballyglass

MusicToday’s music is provided by the Raheen Pipe Band. The Band was founded in 1948 by John O’Rourke and they take their name from the townland of Raheen near Elphin, where the first rehearsals took place in the house of Mark Keaveney.

The first public appearance for the band took place on the 1st November 1949 when they marched from Raheen to Elphin to the applause of well-wishers. In the mid-fifties the band was hit by emigration and went into decline but reformed in 1972 and went on to perform at County and Connacht Championship Finals, Parades and many social and cultural events. They have also had the honour of performing for two Presidents’, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese.

In 2006 a recruitment drive for new members was successful and funds were raised for new uniforms and equipment and for the first time kilts, featuring a Roscommon tartan with a blue and gold mix, were introduced.
