Preface/notes

• This document is based on the tracking of cats with logs set up in Names & Numbers on DCC in 2012 and 2013 (Data collection through 31.12.2013)

– The number of logs for 2013 is different from that found in the 2013 New Membership statistics as that only takes into account the activity of members who joined in 2013; included in 2013 TR logs are members who joined before 2013 but did not set up a log till 2013 and those with more than one log up

• Cats who have gone OTJ and then relapsed are counted in the OTJ figures, and as a new log/TR cat when they go back on insulin

– Exception: Puddin/Lisa was only OTJ for 28 days, so is not included in the OTJ statistics– See appendix for cats concerned

• Cats who switch insulin are included in the last insulin used only as one of the purposes of the tracking is to following the number and percentage of cats per insulin who do – or do not – go into a diet controlled remission

– A table of such cats may be found in the Appendix

• « Active Cats » refers to Cats that are OTJ or still followed on forum (Total logs – GA and MIA cats)

• 2012 figures include three cats who went OTJ and one who went GA in 2013, as well as those who went MIA during 2013

2013 in a few numbers ……

72 logs set up by members

from 12 different countries in 2013… a 31% increase vs. 2012

25 cats who went OTJ using 6 different insulins

55 Active cats at the end of 2013

……but 2013 is also

Only 46% of cats starting TR in 2013 went OTJ… a drop of 22,2 points vs 2012 (base Active Members)

Number of logs started

• A strong and encouraging increase (16) in the number of logs started in 2013 vs. 2012…. If to note, total DCC membership rose by 52.4% over the same period

Status of Cats

• While in total numbers, more cats went OTJ in 2013 than in 2012, a less optimistic view though, when the percent of cats going OTJ is examined…. The percentage of cats going OTJ is dropping and the percentage of cats still FD has sharply increased

• Some 2013 Cats will hopefully become OTJ in 2014…. And some will become MIA/GA… so over the following months, these percentages will evolve

Page 11: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

11

Zoom on Active Cats

• At the end of 2013, there is an increase of 30,9% in the number of logs started vs. 2012, and of 71.9% in Active members (a percentage which will certainly have dropped by end 2014 due above all to MIAs over time) … However, the % of cats that went OTJ is not keeping pace – only 4 more cats went OTJ in 2013 than in 2012 – an increase of 19%

• Overall, on the base of Active Cats, there is a drop of 22 pts in the % of cats that are OTJ in 2013 vs. 2012: only 45,5% vs. 67,7%

Page 12: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

12

Seasonality

• Aside from Feb-April, no clear seasonality trends in terms of members starting logs

• Note: the high number of logs started in October 2013 includes 5 members brought over from YDC

Page 13: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

13

Geography/ 2012

• While N. America accounts for just over half of all logs set up in 2012, the US only accounts for 44% - low vs. the total number of members from the US

• Very strong presence for the UK

Page 14: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

14

Geography/ 2013

• An increase in members from the US setting up logs vs. other markets in 2013• The appearance of South Americans• The same number of UK members started logs (16) – but a lower share due to the

increase in total logs• Fewer Europeans and few Europen countries represented vs. 2012

Insulin used: Nb of Cats

• Lantus is the most used insulin in both 2012 and 2013• A switch though for other insulins:

– Use of PZI – whether Bovine, ProZinc or Hypurin – dropped sharply in 2013: in the case of Hypurin the drop can be linked to good results for cats on Caninsulin in the UK which has meant that it is no longer suggested (unless results on Caninsulin merit) that members move to it

– Good increase in use of Levemir as good results with the few members using it led to more switching to its use: Levemir has only been used as the first insulin for one cat

– Increased use of Caninsulin for the reason mentioned above

Page 17: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

Insulin used: Percent of Total

• In terms of the percent of cats using a given insulin, use of Lantus, Caninsulin and Levemir has increased substantially

• To note the very sharp drop in Hypurin cats: 22% of 2012 logs and only 3% of 2013 logs…

• The use of PZI unsulin (US PZI and Hypurin) dropped from 51% to only 17% of cats…. With Lantus and Levemir now accounting for 50%

17

Page 18: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

Status per Insulin 2012

• In pure numbers, Lantus had the best success in 2012 with 7 cats using it OTJ • Lantus is followed by Caninsulin and Hypurin. • US PZI (bovine or ProZinc) results are quite medicore• Levemir was only used by 2 cats, and NPH by 1• A high number of MIAs amongst Hypurin cats

18

Page 19: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

Status per Insulin 2013

• A change in 2013 as Caninsulin becomes the very clear « success story » of the year – 12 cats went OTJ on it while only 4 remain FD (including Puddin/Lisa who was OTJ for 28 days before needing insulin again due to thyroid issues).

• Lantus drops to second place… above all the number of OTJ cats on it is surpased – by 2 to 1 – by the number of cats that remain FD.... With the same number dropping off forum

• With one exception Levemir has been a replacement insulin – often for longer term FD cats, which may explain its low OTJ number – the only cat to go OTJ on it started TR on it when newly dx’d

19

Page 20: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

% of Total Cats OTJ/Insulin

• In terms of the percentage of cats who have gone OTJ , Lantus has lost its success leader status to Caninsulin… which accounted to close to half of all cats that went OTJ in 2013

• Hypurin did well in 2012 … but has dropped back in 2013 as it has dropped out of use by cats on forum

• No cats have gone OTJ on Bovine PZI in the last two years (if few cats have used it)

20Reminder % total logs

Page 21: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

% Active Cats OTJ / Insulin

• A look at the % of Active Cats (removing MIA, whose status is unknown, and GA from the total figures) provides a more accurate way to look at success rates

– The total number of Active Cats using the insulin does, however, need to be taken into account - a 100% success rate for Levemir or NPH in 2012 or Hypurin in 2013, when there is only 1 Active Cat, is not significant….

• Overall, the strong performance of cats using Caninsulin is confirmed• Again, the strong drop in success rates for Lantus cats in 2013 vs. 2012 is

underscored

21

Page 22: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

OTJ Index Active Cats• Another way to better understand the performance of different insulins is to look at

an index calcuated by dividing the % of Active cats OTJ on the insuin vs. the % of Active cats using that insulin

– For example, if 4% of Active Cats are on insulin X, and 8% of OTJ cats are on insulin X, the index is 4%/2% or 200

– An index over 100 means that a relatively high proportion of cats on that insulin are going OTJ : a higher percentage of cats using that insulin are going OTJ vs. the percent of cats using the insulin

– Again, caution needs to be used when only 1 Active cat is concerned

22

Page 23: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

OTJ Index Active Cats (Cont.)

• Taking into account the only 1 active cat on Levemir/NPH in 2012 and 1 on Hypurin in 2013, once again Caninsulin proves itself to be the most successful insulin used with TR either year with an index of 127 in 2012 and 165 in 2013

• Despite good results in terms of pure numbers, Lantus underperforms with indices under 100 both years – cats are going OTJ on it, but not in proportion to the number of cats on Lantus

• US PZI insulins (both Bovine and ProZinc) have very low indices – no cats have gone OTJ on Bovine PZI over the last 2 years (if few have used it and ProZinc has a low – and decreasing index

• Interesting to note is the index of 132 for NPH in 2013 – with 5 active cats using the insulin

• Caninsulin and NPH – usually considered « to be avoided » insulins have the best sucess rates …. The US PZI insulins on which TR is based, are the least successful in getting cats OTJ

25

2013 Bovine PZI Cats

• Only two 2013 Active cats on BCP at the end of 2013, both remain FD– Mandy/Lisa was OTJ from Jan-Aug 2013 (after being dx’d in Dec 2012)

27

2013 ProZinc Cats

• One cat went OTJ on ProZinc in 2013: Bubba, a a cat who was OTJ (on Lantus) since Feb 2011, and came out of remission due to steroids

• The last 3 cats all are end of 2013 arrivals, post very infrequently and are receiving little if any help on forum

2013 Hypurin Cats

• A huge drop in the number of cats on Hypurin in 2013– One quick success story– One member who is no longer involved on forum, and who switched from

Caninsulin to Hypurin only a short time before leaving

Page 30: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

2013 Lantus Results

• 2013 OTJ rates for lantus are down sharply vs. 2012…..

– 2012 :• 7 Lantus Cats OTJ • 37% of Total Lantus Cats (15 Cats)• 70% of Active Lantus Cats ( 10 Cats)

– 2013:• Again 7 Cats OTJ…. But this number represents only • 24% of Total Lantus Cats (29 Cats)• 33% of Active Lantus Cats (21 Cats)

33

2013 Lantus Cats

• Taking a closer look at the FD cats, there are some possible explanations……

– Several are quite long term FD cats (and arrived towards the end of the year): Tomas, BooBoo, Jesse

– Members have not (or could not) always follow TR closely in terms of testing, optimal dosing times: Harlem, Jefferson

– Several are not very active on forum, so not receiving on-going advice: Atreyu, Mikey, Raven, Winston, Jesse…… though a question is why they are not more active.

– One, Little Bit, switched to Levemir in Jan 2014 (if was doing very well on Lantus at the time with several 80 or so hour runs)

Page 34: 2013 vs. 2012 Cats on TR. Table of Contents 2 Preface/Notes …………………………………..……. Page 3 2013 In Numbers ……………………..…….......…Page 4

35

2013 Levemir Cats

• Heightened interest in Levemir in 2013 led to more cats moving to it• Many are longer term FD, explaining low OTJ rates to date• Carl/Beth moved to Levemir in Nov 2013• Baby/Elana is very well regulated, with runs of 40-50 hours • JJ, the only OTJ cat, was newly diagnosed and switched from NPH starting TR on

Levemir almost immediately

37

2013 Caninsulin Cats

• Excellent results for Caninsulin – the most used insulin in 2013 behind Lantus• Of the remaining FD cats:

– Mandy is doing very well with extended durations – but has some health problems– Suki is also doing well, if not 100% regulated– Streepje and Cloe (same owner) are not being dosed consistenly, which is affecting results

2013 NPH Cats

• Excellent results for another faster acting insulin also: NPH• Alex when OTJ in May 2013, and has needed insulin again since 30.12 following

surgery to remove a tumour• Bandit is about to move to Levemir
