DESIGN FOR CHANGE

2014 光寶創新獎:設計.蛻變2014 Lite-On Award: Design for Change

The theme of the 14th Lite-On Award was "Design for Change" with the hope that designers could combine designs with technology, based on care for society, culture and the environment, so as to bring to the world not only convenience, but also a positive force for change. During nearly four decades of corporate development, "innovation" has always been Lite-On's focus. For Lite-On, the Lite-On Award serves as a cradle for nurturing design talent and as means for the company to fulfill its corporate social responsibilities and contribute to society. Since 2001, the Lite-On Award has been continuously held as a public event, with nearly NT$200 million in funding and manpower invested, and more than 20,000 designers from over 20 countries around the world participating. More than 10,000 innovative designs have been presented, making the award the most representative and authoritative industrial design competition among the global Chinese community.

This year more than 2,300 entries were received, with over 1,700 design works submitted. Design subjects this year are centered on responding to human needs and caring for lives and disaster relief. From this can be seen the gradual transformation of design objectives into a positive force for change in society and in people's lives. Awarded designs display unlimited creativity, perfectly demonstrating the concept that the art of design evolves over time and that when combined with technology it can change the world. The Gold Award winner this year is the "Cold Compress Band-Aid". This product makes use of the simple chemical reaction between water and ammonium nitrate to achieve rapid cooling and haemostatis. This intelligent and practical design is highly applicable to emergency first aid situations. In addition the coin-sized compact product size won unanimous recognition from the judges. Silver Awards were given to the "Forest Wizard", a product design combining a fire detection chip, Bluetooth 4.0, vibration power generation chip and solar technology, and the "LBS Portable Fire Extinguisher", which incorporates application and human-machine interface concepts. The Bronze Award was given to the "Diving Emergency Sharing Device". All these works demonstrate innovative design concepts that reflect the designers' social concern and environmental awareness, exhibiting a "people-oriented" spirit that won the recognition of the judges. The other design awarded a Bronze Award, "Life-Me", is a solution to safety issues caused by the huge crowds on China's subway station escalators. The "Mobile Kitchen" that received Merit Awardis a response to the home living demands of highly mobile economic migrants in China. These designs all suggest that industrial designers are embracing a design approach based on observation of social phenomena and consideration of the needs of humanity.

Every year, the Lite-On Award invites international design experts and industry leaders to serve as judges. This year, the judges included Soon-In Lee, Senator, International Council of Society of Industrial Design, Frederick Rickmann, CEO of DN group, Manfred Wang, distinguished professor of the Department of Design, National Taiwan Normal University, Sean C.K. Lee, Managing Director, iF DESIGN ASIA Ltd, and Hugh Hu, General Manager of NDD Design. The judges of the final selection unanimously affirmed the ambitions of these young Chinese designers to change lives and change the world, applying alternative approaches to achieve breakthroughs and transformation.

The Lite-On Award has become a leading platform for the exchange of design intelligence. In the future, the award will continue to encourage young designers to explore diverse themes and concepts, and bring outstanding creative works to the international arena, realizing its original objective of encouraging innovation on technology.

光寶集團董事長期許Words from the Chairman of Lite-On Group

Lite-On Technology has always been committed to achieving world-class excellence. Our vision is to establish a sustainable enterprise that fulfills its social responsibilities. Such a vision has been internalized and has become part of the competitiveness and corporate culture of Lite-On. The Lite-On Award is representative of the company's commitment to fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities. Since 2001, the Lite-On Award has been continuously held as a public event, nurturing Chinese industrial design talent from around the world. We are happy to see over 10,000 innovative designs from over 20 countries around the world receive recognition through the platform created by the Lite-On Award. The award is now considered the Oscars of the Chinese industrial design industry.

This year, the Lite-On Award has attracted more than 2,300 designers from around the world with more than 1,700 design works submitted. I would like to congratulate the award winners for having stood out from thousands of designers, meaning that your design skills have been truly recognized. The Lite-On Award is now in its 14th year. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us all these years; your support drives our continuous improvement.

Lite-On Technology believes that the Lite-On Award is a living asset belonging not only to Lite-On, but also to the whole community. Lite-On Technology is entering its 40th year, and the Lite-On Award is in its 14th. Lite-On's continuous innovation and growth is the result of accumulated achievements and performance. For that, we would like to express our foremost appreciation for the support of various government agencies, industry partners and technology pioneers. Special thanks to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industrial Development Bureau and ITRI for the years of support in providing guidance and exchange opportunities in aspects of policy and business. I would also like to thank our joint partners in the Lite-On Award this year, ABB, Bayer MaterialScience and Merck for working with Lite-On in the development of cross-industry innovation capabilities. Today's Lite-On Award is the result of the joint efforts and participation of many different sectors.

Lite-On Technology's investment in corporate social responsibility has been recognized by various parties. This year we received the Corporate Citizenship Award from Commonwealth magazine for the eighth consecutive year, and were named a leading enterprise in the category of DJSI constituent stocks by the "Dow Jones Global Sustainability Index" for the third consecutive year, surpassing other well-known enterprises from Asia, Europe and the Americas in the same category. Moreover, the Lite-On Foundation has been dedicated to community education for 21 years. Upholding the spirit of "providing education to serve the public", the Xinyi Community College managed by Lite-On is the only community college in Taiwan run by a corporate foundation; the design and execution of the college's curriculum are also based on the spirit of innovation.

In facing radical change in global industry, Lite-On officially launched this year a "One Lite-On" program that will integrate our nine subsidiaries and acquired enterprises into one company with eight business groups, whose profit and revenue growth will be what drives quality growth of the company in the future. As the group turns 40 this year, through "9-in-1" integration, we will continue to grow under a "One Lite-On" structure, moving towards a vision of sustainable development that will ensure we can one day celebrate a century of growth. At the same time, we will also uphold the spirit of giving back to society and continue to learn about and fulfill our corporate social responsibilities, enhance sustainable growth in all aspects within the organization, and work with our customers and supply chain partners to create high-quality company growth while taking into account the interests of stakeholders.

With so many people touching them every day, escalator handrails tend to become covered with large amounts of bacteria; unless they are disinfected on a regular basis they can contribute to the spreading of infectious diseases. As a result, many escalator-users are reluctant to touch the handrails, creating the risk of accidents. Life-Me is designed to perform a cyclical disinfecting of escalator handrails, so that passengers can enjoy peace of mind when touching the handrail. The handrail track also features a "hand" image that changes color to remind escalator users to put their hands on the escalator. In this way, the Life-Me both helps keep escalator handrails germ-free and also reduces the risk of accidents.

Currently, the design of smoking zones normally makes use of an enclosed space to separate smokers from non-smokers. However, with a semi-enclosed environment, non-smokers are still exposed to second-hand smoke to some extent. The Air Wall Isolation Smoking Area provides smokers with a smoking area that is effectively enclosed without requiring the use of an actual wall. Carefully controlled air-flow directs the cigarette smoke away from the smoking zone so that non-smokers are not exposed to second-hand smoke, and smokers within the smoking zone do not feel claustrophobic.

The high levels of noise that tend to characterize disaster zones and accident sites can make it difficult for doctors to hear properly, interfering with their use of the stethoscope to make diagnoses. The LED Design Examination Device is designed to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, so that rather than basing the diagnosis on what they hear, the doctor makes the diagnosis according to what they see. The frequency with which the LED lamp flashes indicates the patient's heartbeat frequency, while the brightness of the lamp indicates the heartbeat strength. As part of its continuous efforts to promote inter-industry innovation and encourage designers to value "practical creativity", Lite-On Technology once again invited international heavyweight companies, ABB, Bayer and Merck (a new partner) to co-host the "Lite-On Special Award", in addition to the Lite-On Award. The judges of the Special Award comprised senior managers from these partner companies and from the Lite-On Group, tasked with identifying outstanding innovative and marketable designs that achieve the objective of being both creative and practical.

The 12 awarded designs this year embody the spirit of the theme, "Design for Change", which refers to changing people's lives via technology. At the same time, these designs represent young designers' concerns for technological trends and environmental issues. For example, some designs featured the much hyped IOT (Internet of Things) concept: "Wisdom Electricity Housekeeper" and "Fire Escape Guide Alarm" ; some designed wearable devices for infants: "Baby Care", and others featured innovative uses of green energy: "Raining Guardian" and "Enlighten Self-setting OLED Sticker". Meanwhile, one awarded design was inspired by cultural trends and as a response to phubbers on the MRT: the "Sub-Library - Underground circulation system for second-hand books" combines smart cards and the concept of mobile libraries to encourage smartphone addicts to read, showcasing this young designer's sensitivity to current trends.

The three designs that won the recognition of ABB were followers of the principle of "energy efficiency". These designs incorporated energy-saving elements into home living and driving safety and identified energy saving possibilities from energy consumption chains, echoing the trend for sustainable energy development. The "Self Generator", won the ABB Award of Honor, adopts an energy conversion design to equip traditional fans with an energy regeneration function. Both "Wisdom Electricity Housekeeper", a systematic design that integrates mobile devices, apps, and energy-saving equipment for homes, and "Noise Power", a design that transforms city noise into light through energy conversion, won ABB Special Awards.

The three designs awarded by Bayer were not only innovative in terms of material use, but also embodied the spirit of "Science For A Better Life", which is Bayer's corporate slogan and core value. The "Telepathist", which embodies the spirit of caring for people and combines smart cards with the bus system to make bus rides more safe and convenient for blind passengers, won a Bayer Special Award. The "Fire Escape Guide Alarm" combines Wi-Fi with real-time surveillance cameras to ensure sufficient emergency escape routes and to allow firefighters to carry out rescue operations more efficiently, also winning the recognition of the Bayer Special Award. Another Bayer Special Award winning design, the "Baby Care", is a wearable device combining cotton fabric and sensor components to make baby care more comprehensive.

The Merck Special Award emphasizes the concept of a "Displaying Futures" and is given to designs that create new applications in display and lighting technology. Merck Special Award of Honor winning design, "Traveler Curtain", combines thin film solar cells and soft screen projection technology to offer local temperatures and personalized window displays for travelers in temporary accommodations. Another Merck Special Award winning design, the "Raining Guardian", transforms the water pressure of falling rain and the vibrations of moving vehicles into electricity to power enhanced road illumination and thus ensure traffic safety. The final Merck Special Award winning design, "Sub-Library - Underground circulation system for second-hand books" combines a display system with a smart card, making books available to commuters and encouraging phubbers on the MRT to read.

The three design works that won the Lite-On Special Award all embodied the spirit of "practical creativity", including the "Airbag Taillight" that combines an airbag with LED technology to reduce the risk of a second collision at an accident scene, the "Enlighten Self-setting OLED Sticker" that converts solar energy into electricity to power an adhesive OLED device that can serve as an alarm or additional lighting for walking at night, and the "Flexible Refrigerator" that incorporates an NFC sensor module into a traditional electronic appliance to allow easy adjustment of space within a refrigerator.

How can intelligent technologies provide clean energy and reduce environmental pollution? How can innovative manufacturing and production design increase the efficiency, improve product quality, and enhance corporate competitiveness? How can people utilize the intelligent building technologies to create cozy and environmentally-friendly working, recreational and living spaces?

A great number of ABB automation technologies and designs have helped utilities, industrial, transportation and infrastructure customers over the last centuries, ABB keeps evolving itself in presuming the innovation in power and automation arena by working with customers to pursue their manufacturing perfection in a sustainable way. In the power field represented by high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, taken China as an example, compared to coal power, clean energy transferred by these projects can reduce carbon dioxide by 320 million tons each year, equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by a forest half the size of Beijing; compared to AC transmission of the same voltage, the power saved annually with HVDC transmission line can meet the electricity usage of equivalent 5 million household.

In the industrial automation, ABB's smart manufacturing technologies have helped many customers increase the efficiency in productivity and resource utilization to achieve their sustainable competitiveness. Since variable speed drives were introduced some 40 years ago, ABB has delivered millions of units across the globe to all industries. During this time, a huge amount of energy has been saved. The installed base of ABB’s variable speed drives saved an amazing 310 million MWh in 2011 alone. The consumption of buildings can be reduced with energy efficient technologies such as intelligent controls that adjust the heating temperature, lighting and energy consumption of electric appliances to the actual requirements. ABB products and systems provide energy savings of between 30 and 60 percent in these areas.

The above are just a few method that currently using in the industry. Lite-On Award is aim to encourage when founded in the "doing more with less" design. Thus, attracts ABB to join the sponsorship by selecting the design that matches our value propositions, which are reuse, recycle and cut down the waste. Therefore, I sincerely urge more people to join this effort, when encountering the pressing point for Taiwan at this critical moment, with "doing more with less" design, together we can run the world without consuming the Earth.

The Self-Generator concept was developed as a result of noticing that, when an electric fan is switched off, the kinetic energy from the fan is lost. Self-Generator uses electromagnetic sensors to convert the kinetic energy remaining in the fan into electric potential that can be stored and used by the fan the next time it is switched on (according to the principle of the conservation of energy, the energy gained by a fan during the period between being switched on and reaching a steady speed is equivalent to the energy lost during the transition from that steady speed to being motionless again). Due to the impact of frictional resistance and storage conversion efficiency, it is estimated that the energy stored from 2 to 3 instances of being switched off will be enough to activate the fan once. The device does not give feedback regarding the amount of energy remaining, as this would waste the energy that had been collected.

「Noise Power」以能量再生的理念運用於隔

Noise Power applies the theory of energy regeneration to sound-insulating walls. The huge amount of noise produced by motor vehicles is converted into electric power, and careful energy allocation is used to ensure that this renewable energy is used in the most efficient way possible. In this way, irritating noise is transferred into a source of beautiful radiance.

Innovation is the base for technology. The theme of the Lite-On Award and Bayer's own mission statement, "Science For A Better Life", share the same spirit, which is to make life better for human beings through innovation. Bayer was pleased to be invited for the 6th consecutive year to sponsor the Lite-On Award, enabling us to cultivate industrial design talent together. By using its innovation as the basis to face global challenges, Bayer has participated in many important moments in human history in the past 150 years - from aspirin in the early years to the current use of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as a new raw material for plastics. We are happy to see that young designers this year can develop innovative applications through their observation and understanding that leading materials can improve people's lives.

Bayer is an international company with over 110 thousand employees. Its core competencies are in the fields of health care, nutrition and high-tech materials. The company also has a decades-long tradition in Asia's most important markets. Bayer has been operating for more than a century in China, India and Japan, and stepped into the Taiwanese market in 1958. The company's products and services are designed to benefit people and improve their quality of life. By applying science to major global challenges, Bayer delivers innovations that address unmet customer and market needs to meet its ultimate goal – sustainable development. The Bayer Group is among the "World's most admired chemical companies" as indicated by the U.S. Fortune magazine and is listed among "The scientist's best places to work in industry" by the U.S. magazine, The Scientist. It is also an enterprise that has appeared in the DJSI World list on a continuous basis since the establishment of the index in 1999.

As a subgroup of Bayer, Bayer MaterialScience is not only one of the world's largest polymer producers, but also the inventor of polyurethane and polycarbonate. Its business scope focuses primarily on the production of high-tech polymer materials and the development of innovative solutions for products used in many areas of daily life. The main segments served are the automotive, electrical and electronics, construction and sports and leisure industries.

Bayer MaterialScience businesses are dedicated to energy efficiency as well as sustainability; therefore, we apply our innovative products to green technology including the production of the world's first solar airplane—Solar Impulse, and renewable energy such as wind turbines. To achieve the goal of Bayer's Climate Protection Project, Bayer MaterialScience businesses have established Eco-Commercial buildings in four countries based on the concept of low-carbon or zero carbon emission. The achievement has been a successful example to conserve energy as well as protect our climate from the construction industry. In addition, MaterialScience businesses currently devote themselves to the Dream Production Project, which aims for using carbon dioxide for generating the initial molecules in polyurethane mass production. The project serves as another realisation of the Bayer group's promise to pursue sustainability.

We expect to enrich the judging process based on our own contributions and innovative solutions to some of the major global challenges we face today. Our goal is to drive the combination of industrial design with intelligent technology even further in the future.

It is a common sight today to see people using public transport who are glued to their mobile devices, oblivious to what is happening around them. Another contemporary social phenomenon in countries that use Chinese characters in their writing system is people forgetting how to write particular characters because they are too used to typing nowadays. Sub-Library is a circulation system for second-hand books designed for use on underground railway and other public transportations; at the same time, it is hoped that Sub-Library can help keep the habit of reading alive. Passengers can use a prepaid IC card to borrow a book while waiting for the train, and return it when they reach their stop. Passengers can also donate their old books to contribute to the circulation system. Sub-Library can make an important contribution towards enhancing citizens' cultural awareness, while also providing a good use for second-hand books.

The "cat's eye" reflectors that are currently used on the roads often provide insufficient light during heavy rain, which can lead to accidents. Raining Guardian is designed to improve the effectiveness of road illumination in rainy conditions or when there is insufficient natural light. The system does not require an additional power supply, making it energy-saving and environmentally-friendly. Raining Guardian uses renewable energy (specifically, the pressure from falling rain) to control the sensors and provide a level of brightness appropriate to the current conditions, thereby helping to ensure the safety of passing vehicles.

The Enlighten OLED sticker can be stuck onto a window during the daytime to absorb solar energy; the solar panel on the back of the device converts solar power into electrical energy to enable the "soft" OLED to emit light. The OLED sticker can be attached to any surface to serve as a warning light or ancillary light source. For example, when going jogging at night, the Enlighten OLED sticker can be attached to the back of the jogger's clothing or the front of their head-band; it can be attached to the side of one's wallet or purse; or when an elderly person is out walking at night they can attach it to their walking stick to provide a supplementary light source.

When two vehicles impact one another, Air Bag Taillight automatically expands and floats in the air. The positioning of the Air Bag Taillight up in the air, combined with the constantly flashing LED, ensures that vehicles coming up behind are immediately aware that there has been an accident, and can respond accordingly. Air Bag Taillight thus reduces the risk of secondary collisions, and also contributes to the safety of pedestrians.

Businesses have been putting a lot of thought into how to deal with climate change as well as minimize risk. This holds true whether they pursue "Blue Ocean" or "Red Ocean" strategies. Global citizens, for their part, also need to consider how long they can engage in an unbridled consumption of the planet's resources. The Lite-On Award hopes to inspire a "Green Ocean" strategy, inspiring designers to tread lightly on the earth, co-existence with nature, and revitalize technology through ecological awareness. "Tech it Easy" can be seen as an extension of green design. We not only wish to remind designers that "Less is More" and "Less is Better" but also guide them back to the true spirit of simplicity. Functionality of the products, thoughtful design for easy to use and energy efficiency (an aspect that the Lite-On Award has never ceased to emphasize when it comes to sustainable technology) are the three main foci of this competition. "Tech it easy" means that technology can be simple. In other words, technology can have a simple design with easy to use functionalities and energy-saving features. Any product with a seemingly simple design is usually the result of thoughtful design and precise execution.

Driven by the strong belief that LED will change the way we live and enhance our life style, Lite-On Electronics was established in 1975 in a small apartment by the three original founders. There they created another garage legend.

Lite-On was the first company to produce LEDs. In the 30 years since its inception, it has gone through three major changes. In 1983, Lite-On had its IPO and was the first technology company to be listed on the Taiwan Exchange. In 2002, four public companies merged, including Lite-On Electronics, Lite-On Technology, Silitek and GVC, with the new entity becoming the Lite-On Technology that we know today. The merger of four public companies was considered revolutionary in the history of the Taiwan equities market.

Over the past few years, Lite-On Technology has successfully created the strategy of "Profitable Growth". Our chief business objective is no longer solely sales growth. Our company now endeavors to implement strategic improvement of products, and to focus on the development of core Opto-Electronic components, including Power Supply, Optoelectronics, Mechanical Competency, and Connected Devices & System Solution Business

Groups. Lite-On products are widely used in the 4C industries, namely computers, communications, consumer electronics and car electronics. Considering future trend of industry and enviornmental issues, Lite-On Group leverges it's advantage in ICT industry transferring to focus on new energy technology. The synergy brought from new energy supply chain has taken effect in the industry and has brought new growth momentum for Lite-On Group, which includes outdoor/indoor LED lighting, energy-efficient products such as power management in cloud computing system and energy storage solutions.

Our business mergers have won favor from international investment firms. The company has transformed from a Taiwan optoelectronics leader into an international enterprise, with foreign investors holding around half of the shares. For five consecutive years 2003-2007, the company was listed in Business Week's Info Tech 100; while for three consecutive years 2005-2007, it was selected by Forbes as one the Asian Fab 50 companies. Not only does it possess business competency reaching to international standards, its creativity has been proved by the prestigious international awards it has won. From 2005-2012, it has received 44 international design prizes, comprising the German iF Award, the German red dot award and the U.S. IDEA Award. More than just an honoring of Lite-On Technology, these awards represent the glory of Chinese all over the world.

From 2005, Lite-On Technology has repeatedly earned the Corporate Social Responsibility Award from Global Views Monthly, and the Corporate Social Responsibility Award from CommonWealth Magazine. The company's contributions to society are highly recognized. The Lite-On Award aims at training talents and boosting competitiveness of Chinese on the world stage. It has successfully created many design elite and received much positive feedback from industrial design professionals. Established in 1993, the Lite- On Cultural Foundation has been involved in community services, such as helping minority entities and providing counseling services to teenagers.
