new paradigms of thinking and behaviour which will stem from that. It can also engage youth in the prospect of their future by making them central to its design.
Considering the connection of English Language Teaching and Educa-tion for Sustainability, it is important to reflect on the mission of the English language in promoting sustainability competence and manifesting sustain-ability values. Developing sustainability competence implies overall under-standing of the concept sustainability and sustainability competence.
The present paper aims at exploring the sustainability competence via English.
The attempt has been made to draw the parallels between sustainability and language learning, sustainability and teaching and to answer the ques-tions what is sustainability competence and why it is significant for univer-sity teachers and graduates. We believe that building the capacity of teachers on Education for Sustainability, reformulating the curricular to reflect an ecological world view, integrating green issues of the local level in teaching material are of great importance. Being aware of the fact that promoting sustainability competence in the English classroom is a must for raising the generation who will live in a sustainable future. We have done the literature review of various researchers working on sustainablity competence and its analysis. By comparing Lithuanian and foreign researchers‘ study we synthe-sized and interpreted their findings. A special emphasis has been made on the paradigm of sustainable competence and its constitutes. We hope to give university teachers and students impulse to understand the significance of sustainable practices and, as a result, to make choices, take actions in English language teaching and language learning practices at universities.
Key words: sustainability, education for sustainability, sustainable development, sustainability competence, foreign language teaching.

The Future of Language Education and how to Stop it: A Culturometric Analysis of a Neoliberal Disaster
Over the last three decades neoliberal government policies have spread successfully around the world with disastrous effects on the so-
![Page 16: 2014 m. birželio 9–10 d., Vilnius · The Art, Craft and Science of Language Teaching Luc AUBRY, Attaché de Coopération pour le français près l’Ambassade de France en Lituanie,](https://reader034.vdocuments.pub/reader034/viewer/2022042405/5f1c9901b5509514cd5bf3c6/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

cial infrastructures of many countries. Neoliberal policies move vast amounts of public money into private hands increasing the gap betwe-en rich and poor and decimating social support services for the majori-ty of the population. Along with Health and Transport, Government-funded education is also among the most devastated public services. Yet, in representative democracies, these policies are initially supported by the misguided self-interests of those most deleteriously affected – lecturers, teachers, students their families, communities and institu-tions. This paper analyses this effect on Language Education through the Culturometric definition of Cultural Identity – a concept originally inextricably bound with the teaching of languages - examining language ‘spin’ used in achieving neoliberal policy acceptance, focusing here on the current spin of ‘Diversity’. By tracing western government resour-cing of value changes in language education through their international change events over the last three decades, we show – in contradiction to neoliberal policy documents such as the Common European Fra-mework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment – how the potential diversity for student educational outcomes of lan-guage education has shrunk under neoliberal education governance to the single option of Employee-ment – the identity of an ideal employee. We evidence how culture has been stripped from language education and replaced by training employee-ment skills to current policy com-pliancy standards. To recover from this disaster we then deconstruct Cultural Diversity in language education to deduce policy amendments to the Common European Framework that would authentically incre-ase cultural diversity as it is valued by the international community of Language Educators. We conclude by extrapolating the past three decades of changes in resourcing language education towards two pos-sible futures – a future predicated on the Employee-ment values of the current Common Framework and a future predicted by the deduced policy amendments to the framework for authentically enhancing cul-tural diversity through language education.
Key words: language education, culturometric analysis, neoliberal disaster, the Common European Framework of Reference for Langua-ges: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, Employee-ment values.

Report Writing Skills – a Dream Come True for a Business Management Student
Reporting in business is one of the most common forms of accountability. It is a well-familiar truth, alas not so easily to be carried out. To overcome the difficulties we have to learn how to understand, plan and later produce the report.
As a form of writing for business it is short, precise, logical and concise. It follows a very clear structure pattern, logically developing the main points, starting with the need for it and finishing with conclusions and, if needed, recommendations. It goes without saying that such a disciplined form of writing is not easy to produce, for young, not yet skilled people – especially.
The aim of my paper is to disclose the difficulties that business students are confronted with while writing reports and to suggest ways how teachers can help students to overcome the difficulties and problems arising while executing this task.
The subject of my research is report writing errors observed in business management students’ writing activity.
The main method was analyzing report writing and comparing students’ work with the model report, analyzing the errors and finding the reasons, which led to certain recommendations how to help students achieve better results in the shortest time.
The research revealed that the difficulties can stem from many factors. The most common errors were evident in content and organization. Firstly, reports have a very strict structure which must be kept, unfortunately, terms of reference and aims were omitted, the procedure did not follow a logical order. Another thing is that students found it difficult to discipline themselves and stick to what they really aimed to do, further failing to give sufficient grounding. The most problematic issue in almost every case appeared to be finding the solution to the problem they were dealing with, mainly due to the lack of critical thinking skills. Therefore they tended to include very long finding sections, and later presented unrealistic recommendations.
Naturally, as any other form of writing, reports need a lot of practice. If we manage to give the student the main clues for finding how they can solve the problem the report tackles, then part of the job will already be done.

Effective Learning Environment in an ESP Classroom
The EU encourages all citizens to be multilingual, with the long-term objective that every citizen has practical skills in at least two languages in addition to his or her mother tongue. Recognizing the importance of learners achieving spoken and written competence in foreign languages, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) delivers a compulsory course of En-glish for Specific Purposes (ESP). Medical English is the lingua franca of medical professionals worldwide and healthcare industries around the world have adopted it as the foremost language of communication.
The aim of this study is to identify the LUHS students and practicing medical professionals’ needs and expectations for Medical English acquisi-

tion. Students realize that they have to study Medical English if they want to communicate effectively within the modernized world of medicine. All the professionals working in the healthcare industry will have to use Medical English at some point in their career. Needs assessment has a vital role in the process of designing teaching/learning programmes and carrying out any language course. This has been acknowledged by several scholars and authors (Munby, 1978; Richterich & Chancerel, 1987; Hutchinson & Waters,1987; Berwick, 1989; Brindley, 1989; Robinson,1991; Johns, 1991; West, 1994; Seedhouse, 1995; Jordan, 1997; Dudley-Evans & St. John, 1998; Hamp-Lyons, 2001; Finney, 2002).
The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) to investigate the extent of the need for the students to develop their English Language communicative skills; (2) to project what competences of the English language the respon-dents expect to acquire; (3) to improve the teaching/learning programme and create the learning environment reflecting real life situations, in which students will have to apply their professional knowledge; (4) to determine the preferred methods of teaching.
The research methodology was based on the theory of constructivism in language learning (Perkins, 1991, Brooks, J.G. & Brooks, M.J., 1999) and transfer theory (Patry,1999). The methods employed were scientific literature analysis ant quantitative research survey; for statistical research data analysis SPSS was used.
The findings of the study indicated that the communicative skills are per-ceived as very important by most of the respondents. There is also a need for the development of language skills, design, and implementation of a language programme which aims to ensure that ESP learners possess the English lan-guage skills required to function optimally in international settings; the ESP is also viewed as crucial for effective delivery of professional services and the development of ability to coordinate research and treatment across borders.

Tandeminis mokymas(is): veikėjai, elementai ir perspektyvos

Society and Reading Literature: Aspects of Intertextuality, Memory and heritage
The scope and choice of reading literature ensures societies` cultural and social development and underpins multiple intelligences of its individuals. The term literature signifies here both works of fiction and non-fiction. The given paper discusses some linguistic, textual, psychological, cultural and pedagogical aspects of reading and understanding literature. Reading and writing literature is marked by intertextuality ( a postmodern term coined by Julia Kristeva in 1967 ). The notion of intertextuality, which is a term of post-modernist culture, means that verbal texts are connected among themselves by common themes, types of characters, contexts of situation ,etc. and also linked with non-verbal spheres. Thus, intertextuality establishes links with facts, objects and phenomena existing outside literature .such as art, theatre, cinema, architecture, history, philosophy, politics,, traditions, rules, modes of social life, etc. In postmodernist view they also make texts. Intertextual approach opens possibilities to analyse and compare literary texts with non-

literary, to juxtapose texts of different epochs and genres, to treat objects of visual art as texts, etc.
Intertextuality as part of postmodernist trend is closely linked with the phenomena of memory and heritage. The present paper treats memory and heritage from both literary, psychological and educational point of view. Both phenomena build a psychological and cognitive basis for reading and evaluating literature.
Reading and understanding texts on intertextual grounds will develop the reader and student`s multiple intelligences, such as: of grasping textual meaning, making a deeper text-interpretation, mapping metaphoricity, ambi-guity, symbolism and acquiring critical thinking and creativity. Reading texts intertextually will raise the reader and student`s intellectual powers and their interest to read. The presentation will illustrate the theoretical statements by extracts from both classical and modern writers and poets (Shakespeare, Seamus Heaney, etc).as well as from texts from non-fiction. The growth of sophisticated readership will raise the intellectual powers of both the reader and society.
Key words: intertextuality, memory, heritage, postmodernist culture, ambiguity, symbolism.

Tasks Design for Academic Public Speaking at the Postgraduate Level
The article describes a set of tasks for teaching English academic public speaking at the postgraduate level. These tasks were developed on the basis of a communicative-cognitive approach to a second language acquisition, a thorough discourse analysis of academic public speaking samples, and the featured levels of an orator-audience interaction. The authors define four types of these tasks:
1.informative - prognostic, 2.communicative - strategic, 3.communica-tive – procedural, 4. communicative - reflexive.
While solving the informative - prognostic tasks the students learn how to

identify the aim of their speech and to analyze the level of audience’s readiness to understand and accept this speech. The communicative - strategic tasks help understand how to create a strategic plan for informative, persuasive or conventional public speech as well as micro parts of the speech body, ways to develop them and signposts to connect these micro parts. The completion of the communicative - procedural tasks develops students’ skills to inform and persuade the audience and install a communicative contact while creating a positive atmosphere. In addition learners understand how to create a suc-cessful introduction and conclusion of their English academic public speech.
The major objective of the communicative - reflexive tasks is to help learners to master their skills in altering their speech, having taken into ac-count the predicted and actual audience’s characteristics. Moreover, after completing this type of tasks students are able to thoroughly analyze the suc-cess of their speech after its completion, the strategies that worked best and the drawbacks that should be avoided next time.
Learning to solve these tasks allows developing students’ academic public speaking skills as well as their critical and creative thinking. The set of tasks were successful tested and were included in academic curricula in Belarusian State University and Homel State University ( Belarus).
Key words: academic public speaking, communicative-cognitive ap-proach, informative – prognostic tasks, communicative – strategic tasks, communicative – procedural tasks , communicative – reflexive tasks.

Is it Purposeful for Students of Lithuanian higher Schools to Continue Learning the English Language? Motivation Factors
After Lithuania has regained its independence the policy of foreign langu-ages teaching/ learning at secondary schools changed cardinally, the majority of former school leavers do not perceive it to be purposeful and meaningful to prolong the English language learning on the university or college level. According to them, having covered the secondary school programme they

possess a full baggage of the English language knowledge allowing them to communicate fluently in the above mentioned language while travelling, stu-dying and working in foreign countries. Does this belief correspond to the reality of today?
The article is based on four factors which are supposed to motivate freshmen and senior students to go on learning the English language as the main tool to enhance their position in contemporary world irreversibly affec-ted by massive globalization and Eurointegration processes.
VDU UKI in spring semester of 2014 carried out a research. The ques-tionnaire was compiled the goal of which was to determine whether the En-glish language level of the students matches all the international requirements for the language awareness and present the motives for students to continue the English language studies on a higher level. 172 first year students of va-rious programmes participated in the research. The principle points of the questionnaire sought to provide answers to the following questions: whet-her the level of the English language acquirement is sufficient after having covered the secondary school programme, if VDU UKI English language teaching/ learning policy enables students to acquire the language on a higher level, whether a language is a living, thus a constantly changing organism which requires progressive studies and refreshment of knowledge, if the level of language acquisition remains on the same level if it is not exploited on dai-ly basis. Having systematized the questionnaire results the authoresses of the article draw the conclusion for the purposefulness of continuing the English language level on the university and college level.

Self-evaluation of online Listening by Students of Mykolas Romeris University and Vilniaus kolegija/
University of Applied Sciences
Online self-evaluation of language skills is a novel way for learners to assess their achievements in language learning. Traditionally, the most common way to measure achievement has always been the test. Testing is a tool that helps teachers to identify learners’ strengths and weaknesses, to assess the effectiveness of teaching and take decisions on its perfection. Students’ attitudes to the computerized testing were studied by J. Pino-Selva (2008). Learners’ responses to online self-testing were very positive. In the 21 century, computerized self-assessment has become popular. Now it is available in 14 languages including English. Moreover, learners are not only able to assess all their language skills, but also to receive feedback on their strengths and weaknesses as well as their language level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This paper focuses on researching students’ self-evaluation of their per-

formance in online listening with the aim of improving listening compre-hension and skills. The findings have been collected from three sources: 1) a questionnaire completed by the two samples of respondents; 2) students’ self-evaluations of online listening, which included the follow-up comprehension exercises; 3) the formal testing of students’ performance. There were two sam-ples of participants, i.e. the students of Mykolas Romeris University and the University of Applied Sciences, who studied English for Specific Purposes. Students’ responses were processed by a means of SPSS (Software Package for Social Sciences) to find out if the findings were statistically significant. The data of self-evaluation demonstrated that online activities present certain difficulties that depend on the type of the specific task. Statistical processing demonstrated some correlations between the responses of students by both universities. It implies that obtained findings may be extended beyond de-spite the limited number of respondents in this research.

KIERIENĖ Gileta „Take Care“: Language guide for Effective Communication
between health Care Providers and Non-native Patients
History shows an on-going voluntary and involuntary migration flow of people from their birthplace to other countries. Especially in the EU, more and more people settle to live in a new country. They face though many chal-lenges before they can feel a part of the new society and function properly in the new surroundings. Serious problems arise especially when they need medical help. Because of lack of language skills and lack of basic knowledge on the healthcare system in the new country they become extremely vulner-able compared to the local population.
Not only migrant patients are confronted with these communication problems. Also healthcare providers find it difficult to help people when they cannot properly communicate with them. Effective patient-provider en-counters are based on mutual understanding between providers and patients. When a provider cannot communicate effectively about a disease and treat-ment or when a patient cannot describe an experience of illness, it becomes difficult to build the trust in the provider-patient relationship. Language bar-riers often negatively affect the communication. They can result in misdiag-nosis, medication errors and potentially fatal mistakes that are costly for both patients and providers.
The „Take Care“ project aims to help migrants improve their language skills on health matters in a new language and foster their integration into a new society.
The Project partnership works together with associated partners, such as health care providers, educational institutions and migrant communities, to create a European wide network of relevant institutes in order to mitigate migrants’ integration problems and improve their integration process.
The main project product - a Healthcare Language Guide for Migrants developed during the project by partners from Lithuania, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany, Cyprus, Portugal, Romania and Spain contains a lan-guage learning phrase book (in Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Greek, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish), a glossary in 17 languages, necessary information on the national health care system in each partner country and a basic language emergency kit for healthcare providers. The developed materials are used for trainings for representatives of organizations

IntlUni – Erasmus Academic Network: Aims, Objectives and Outcomes in Meeting the Challenges
of the Multilingual and Multicultural Learning Space
The conference paper intends to disseminate the aims, objectives and outcomes of an international IntlUni project which embraces 38 European partners including Vytautas Magnus University and endeavors to offer solu-tions for running and managing Multilingual and Multicultural Learning Spaces (M&MLS). The project initiative was fostered by challenges related to the continuously increasing internationalization of higher education institu-tions (HEI) caused by the intensified migration and the ensuing expansion of study programmes and courses taught through the medium of English or other second or third languages of those involved in the teaching process. In addition to challenges, the internationalization of learning spaces offers

increased added value opportunities, as for instance, additional learning out-comes of better intercultural awareness, tolerance, acceptance of diversity and other. The main aims of the project are to identify the quality criteria (refer-ence points) that should characterize teaching and learning in the M&MLS and to develop recommendations for how HEIs may implement and ensure the sustainability of quality teaching and learning in the M&MLS.
In the first year of the project Work Packages 2 and 3 provided an over-view of the internationalisation of higher education and the challenges that it entails. While internationalisation may be measured in quantitative terms such as the number of incoming and outgoing exchange students or inter-national full degree students, the IntlUni project focuses on more qualita-tive aspects in the curriculum and the teaching and learning processes. Work Package 3 has identified the linguistic, cultural and educational challenges in the internationalisation of higher education. As the pedagogical and didactic challenges will typically reflect different aspects of an academic or disciplinary culture, IntlUni decided to work with a distinction between linguistic and cultural challenges, and subdivide the cultural challenges into ethnic, local, disciplinary and academic cultures. These challenges obviously have implica-tions for the teaching and learning processes and practices in the M&MLS. The results of the IntlUni project will be relevant for any HEI or other post-secondary educational institutions with an international dimension as well as for organisations and associations in European Higher Education.
Key words: multilingual and multicultural learning space, sustainabil-ity of quality teaching and learning, quality criteria, internationalisation of higher education, linguistic and cultural challenges, ethnic, local, disciplinary and academic cultures.

terest in higher education abroad are just a few prerequisites of the increasing need of learning languages. To this adds the unique multilingual character of Europe whose real wealth consists in its cultural variety. And this rests to the larger extent on its linguistic variety.
The SMILE network aims to support the European language policies through researching, identifying and spreading the successful results of good practices for promoting linguistic diversity with particular focus on the learn-ing of less widely used and taught European languages (LWUTLs).
The project concept is focused on identifying sectors for accommodation of LWUTLs and disseminating in them the most effective existing method-ologies for language learning and promotion. The network understands the needs of the labour market to increase the language skills competitiveness and thus increase employability in the context of globalisation. This can be reached by linking the learning outcomes, enriched by trainings and informal learning, with the growing demand of employers for application of non-con-ventional skills. The partnership composition itself and the methods used for the work programme design will implement in practical terms cooperation between the worlds of education, training and employment.
The network outcomes will be developed in 13 language versions (EN, DE, BG, ES, IT, LT, NL, MT, GR, TR, CZ, LV, FI) and thus support the promotion and reinforcement of better acquisition of multilingual and cross-cultural skills.
Key words: SMILE - Network for Social and Market Inclusion through Language Education, internationalization of the business and the labour mar-ket, linguistic diversity, methodologies for language learning and promotion.

Millennials and Pedagogy: Why Approaches to Education Must Change
In 2012, Viacom conducted research in 24 countries, spanning every con-tinent. They surveyed over 30,000 Millennials. This research is considered not only in-depth, but its findings are groundbreaking. The study, „The Next Normal: An Unprecedented Look at Millennials Worldwide,“ provides the first truly global portrait of this highly influential demographic. In this paper,

I look at 137 surveyed Lithuanian Millennials and compare/contrast these 18-22 year-olds with Viacom’s findings. From the results of the Lithuanian survey, I discuss how approaches to education need to change in order to meet the demands and needs of Generation Y. Educators must radically alter their approaches to teaching and the ways in which they relate to students both inside and outside the classroom. Research on today’s university stu-dents finds that the postmodern student who has been shaped by deconstruc-tionism learns primarily, almost exclusively, through the professor/student relationship. The converse is also true. If the learner strongly dislikes a profes-sor, feels invisible, or doesn’t feel valued by the professor, research shows that the student will not actively engage in the learning process. This paper looks at the causes/effects of Millennial students’ need for personal relationships with faculty, why this 21st century trend has developed and how professors, trained in the 20th century, can still impact students. This paper details why it is imperative for professors to understand students’ unique ways of know-ing and the heightened need for both instructional and personal relation-ships.

Application of Different Vocabulary TestingMethods/Tools: Theoretical and Practical Aspects
Learning vocabulary in C1 courses at University is rather a challenging task for students. Helping to develop this knowledge is not an easily attained target for teachers as well. Vocabulary in C1courses include both academic words and technical terms. In order to master these items learners, first of all, have to have good knowledge of general English and at least some under-standing of the speciality field too. Moreover, specific vocabulary requires not only more sophisticated teaching methods but also more considerate testing methods as well.
Testing is one of major means that contributes to determining whether students have learned and understood the new vocabulary and that they will be able to use it in the context correctly. Still, to get the real view of material acquisition, it is necessary to choose appropriate testing methods which were impartial and reliable.

The aim of this study is, firstly, to ascertain if different vocabulary testing methods can have any influence on the number of mistakes students make in the test and if yes, to what extent. Secondly, if the number of mistakes can depend on the usage of different vocabulary types, such as technical and academic. And finally, what students’ opinion on different testing methods/types is and what factors they see as important for the result they get.

Storytelling as an Effective Means for Passing National Traditions across Generations.
Grundtvig Project Learning at the Hearth
The Learning at the Hearth project celebrates traditional methods of learn-ing through stories, songs, wisdom, recipes and crafts which were once hand-ed down from generation to generation at the fireside.
The project extends the literal setting of the hearth as a metaphor for a place where core learning once took place. We compare and contrast the way hearths have been used across Europe to preserve and transfer traditional wisdom within generations and across generations. While connecting with others in such meeting places, we develop our sense of being and our identity. The stories we share and other cultural “offerings” connect us to our environ-ment, revealing who we are, where we come from, how we should behave and how we navigate through life.
Storytelling is a special way of transferring knowledge and values to oth-ers, of understanding our experiences and of co-constructing meaning for our life. It is a tool for motivating and empowering people; promoting social inclusion and the feeling of belonging. The sharing of common experiences with “the other” (when cultural, linguistic, generational differences exist) in-vites the creation of understanding, tolerance and respect.
The partner organisations from 7 EU countries (UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, Cyprus, Romania and Lithuania) seek to find "common ground" both nation-ally and as Europeans, through familiar experiences. The project shares stories and histories and builds intra-cultural and intercultural bridges. The project also shares good practice in non-formal and informal adult learning.
Key words: hearth, identity, storytelling, empowering people, social in-clusion, non-formal and informal adult learning, intercultural awareness.

It's all about the Blend: Coping with the Challenges of Virtual Learning and Teaching
Learning a foreign language presents different challenges for different people in different contexts. The term 'blended learning' can refer to any combination of different methods of learning, different learning environ-ments, different learning styles, etc. The talk discusses three integral parts of the process of learning and teaching - the learner, the teacher and the peda-gogy - from the point of view of challenges involved when technology comes into play. We will be looking at:
what it takes to be a successful language learner and tutor, i.e. the essential skills and personal qualities required and ways of helping our learners develop these in the process of learning rather than expecting them to be a prerequi-site to the success of online learning;
1) various challenges that curriculum developers face in an attempt to blend traditional classroom-based learning and virtual learning, such as finding the right balance of face-to-face and online study opportunities facilitated by the teacher;2) the current gap in teacher and learner training as a source of frustra-tion and reluctance to learn and teach online and a way forward.
Integration of technology should happen with the mediation and support of the teacher and should help learners work toward their learning aims and needs; therefore, teacher training institutions need to prepare teachers that both know what technologies are available and how they can add to and improve the process of language learning. On the other hand, learners should accept more responsibilty for their learning outcomes and need to be trained to plan and organise their learning more effectively, as well as study, revise and reflect on their learning more regularly.
Key words: blended learning, traditional classroom-based learning, vir-tual learning and teaching, pedagogy, essential skills and personal qualities, curriculum developers, integration of technology.

Integration into the LUhS Community through the Foreign Language Teaching / Learning
Since Lithuania’s integration into the EU the aims and objectives of for-eign language teaching/learning have changed dramatically. Since the year 2005 alongside with their diplomas the graduates of the Lithuanian Univer-sity of health Sciences (LUHS) have to receive foreign language proficiency assessment. The number of foreign students who annually come to LUHS to complete their course in a foreign language is significantly increasing. There-fore the strategy of teaching/learning of Lithuanian as a foreign language is changing as well.
This poster aims to introduce the project which is being carried out at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, to depict the direct (tandem) language teaching/learning method pointing out its advantages and disad-vantages in the context of professional language learning; to evaluate its effi-ciency in the context of intercultural communication. This method has been slightly transformed: i.e., the process of tandem teaching/learning is guided and coordinated by the third person (a teacher). Experimental classes are car-ried out at university (LUHS) and inter-university (LUHS and VMU) levels in accordance with the main criterion - the students’ native and foreign lan-guage proficiency. The choice of tandem method is based on the assumption that it is one of the most pleasant language learning techniques: it increases students’ self-esteem, motivation, raises their intercultural competencies and accelerates the process of their integration into the local community. Learn-ing about a culture from native informants helps students to develop their cultural observation skills and provides opportunities to explore and recog-nize cultural differences. That means raising their awareness not only of the target culture but of their own as well.
The project methodology is based on theories of socio-constructivism (Vy-gotsky, 1962, Bruner, 1966); tandem learning (Rosanelli, 1992; Baumann et al. 1999; Macaire, 2004); cooperative learning (Slavin, 1990), Brown & Ciuffetelli Parker (2009); the concept of language as social action (Bakhtin,

Was bedeuten die Niveaustufen A 1 oder B2?

how Virtual Worlds help People Cope Better in Real Life
Virtual worlds can open new horizons, in particular to people who are confronted with challenges in their lives, such as being housebound due to their age or disability or because they are unhappy about their physical ap-pearance. The latter for example may develop a specific relationship towards their alter ego in virtual worlds, which often has a positive influence on their real life.
A good example is the experience of Kristine Schomaker, a well-known American performance artist, painter and art historian. She was not happy with her appearance in real life and used her avatar to serve as a “vehicle to bring more attention to the obsession society has with physical appearance” (Swenson, E. 2013). Schomaker was overweight and wanted to find out what it felt like to be thinner and taller than she was in real life. Creating an ideal self in form of a thin, gorgeous blond avatar made her feel more secure. She used to hide behind her avatar until she discovered that it helped her to ac-cept herself as she was and inspired her to make changes in real life. Sheehy, P. (Knowclue, K. 2010) describes such process a reverse “projective” from virtual to real world.
An avatar can also influence a person’s brain and functions in real life as the story of 86-year old Fran Seranade shows. Seranade who is suffering from

Parkinson’s condition created a young looking avatar resembling herself in her youth (The Drax Files 2013). Being able to enjoy activities in the virtual world like dancing, diving, horseback riding and boating encouraged her in real life to move her muscles and even walk to the car, which she had not been able to do without help for years. Seranade claims that Second Life® gave her, her emotional experience back (The Drax Files 2013) and that her avatar represents what she really feels inside: “I know my avatar can do this and I know, I can, too.”
These stories demonstrate that virtual learning environments offer great opportunities for people who are housebound, because of age, disability or other. This makes it a great platform for language learning. Learners can travel around, visit places of interest, and meet native speakers of the target language. There are no borders to cross or boundaries to adhere to and learn-ers can join language-learning communities, socialise with others, or attend regular language classes in their own time and on their own terms.
Key words: Second Life, Virtual Worlds, virtual ability, projection from VW to RL, enrichment of experience, learners with special needs.

Empowering Teachers to Use Video (Machinima) with their Learners
Moving pictures, sound and stories are the most powerful way of com-municating language learning content. In the CAMELOT project* language educators and their students learn how to create videos (machinima) in virtu-al worlds. Machinima are easy to create, cost-effective and fun to use in class.
In the first part of the workshop we will look at some very powerful videos created for language teaching and learning within the CAMELOT project and discuss how they can be applied to your own teaching. We will develop a number of activities around the videos ready for you to use in your classroom.
The second part of the workshop will engage participants in the planning and preparation of machinima production such as, how to write a storyboard , what props are needed and how it can be rehearsed and filmed with whom. The aim of the workshop is to prepare the creation of visually appealing vid-eos in virtual worlds.

Dubito, ergo sum. Straipsnyje, siekiama išsiaiškinti tautinės bendrijos ir tautinės mažumos sąvokas; remiantis oficialia statistika, Britų Tarybos inicijuo-to projekto šiuo klausimu tyrimų rezultatais, Vilniaus universiteto kolektyvi-nės monografijos ,,Miestai ir kalbos“ įžvalgomis ( Vilnius 2010), publiacijomis žiniasklaidoje ir įvairiais oficialiais interneto šaltiniais nustatyti realias galimy-bes tautinėms bendrijoms ir tautininėms mažumomis kalbėti ne tik gimtosio-mis kalbomis, bet ir valstybine lietuvių kalba. Vadovujantis padėties analize ir įžvalgomis , pateikiamos išvados ir galimi problemos sprendimo būdai.

ates 4-year programmes focusing on key educational issues requiring action. The international project teams cooperate with experts from 32 European countries; provide training models for teacher educators, equipping them to train others within their institutions and networks; publish examples of good practice applicable to different contexts.
LKPA participates actively in the Language associations and collabora-tive support project (LACS) project (http://lacs.ecml.at/M1/tabid/2937/lan-guage/en-GB/Default.aspx) at the ECML. The project‘s idea is to motivate the national and international language teacher associations in order to dis-seminate ECML projects amongst practitioners. Impacts include presenta-tion of projects at FIPLV members’ events, circulation of newsletters, and increased visits to ECML websites. The project tries to mediate between ECML projects and language teacher associations and other networks at re-gional and national levels to those who can benefit: teachers, learners and policy makers. It aims at raising awareness of existing projects and seeks to motivate people to adapt them to their local environment in order to facili-tate widespread impact on learning and teaching. Major LACS outputs are:
• A Directory of associations and other language organisations;• Multimedia communications strategy to promote ECML as a whole,
current and previous programmes, and specific projects on a rolling basis;
• At least four regional events: operating in ways appropriate to the re-gion;
• Case studies of activities in different countries/regions, to illustrate ways in which ECML projects are being used and having an impact;
• Guidance on how to adapt projects to different contexts;• Continued encouragement of language associations and organisations
to collaborate and share (following the initial Language associations and collaborative support project (LACS).

Kontekstas. Lietuvos švietimo ir užsienio kalbų politika įvairiuose švieti-mo lygmenyse, o ypatingai aukštojo mokslo lygmenyje, neatitinka Europos Sąjungos užsienio kalbų politikos plėtotės mokymosi visą gyvenimą paradi-gmoje. Daugelis tyrimų įrodė kalbinio pasirengimo svarbą verslo pasaulio konkurencingumui. Aukštųjų mokyklų absolventai, būsimi veiklos pasaulio dalyviai, integruojasi į globalią darbo rinką, kurioje dviejų-trijų ir daugiau užsienio kalbų kompetencija yra neišvengiama būtinybė. Tačiau studijas aukštosiose mokyklose pradėję buvę abiturientai ne visada atitinka bendrojo lavinimo mokyklai keliamą kalbinio pasirengimo lygmenį. Aukštosios mo-

kyklos, autonomiškos institucijos, turėtų sudaryti reikiamas sąlygas tobulinti studentų kalbinę kompetenciją, tačiau užsienio kalbų kompetencijos plėto-jimo sistema aukštojo mokslo institucijose dažnai tampa nenuosekli ir le-mia nepakankamą absolventų kalbinį pasirengimą priimti veiklos pasaulio iššūkius. Todėl galima daryti prielaidą, kad egzistuoja prieštara tarp veiklos pasaulio reikalavimų absolventų kalbinei kompetencijai ir galimybių įgyti šią kompetenciją aukštojoje mokykloje.
Tyrimo paskirtis.

Kontekstas. Aukštosios mokyklos absolvento statusas natūraliai reikalauja išsiugdyti pirmosios užsienio kalbos gebėjimus atitinkančius C1 ir C2 mo-kymosi pasiekimų lygmenis visose recepcinės ir produkcinės kalbinės vei-klos – skaitymo, rašymo, kalbėjimo ir klausymo – srityse. Be to, aukštosios mokyklos studentai, remiantis Europos Sąjungos švietimo ir kalbų politikos direktyvomis bei natūraliais perspektyviniais socialiniais, profesiniais ir aka-deminiais studentų poreikiais Bolonijos proceso ir mokymosi visą gyvenimą paradigmoje ir globalaus daugiakultūrinio ir daugiakalbio veiklos pasaulio reikalavimais turi įgyti bent dviejų kitų užsienio kalbų gebėjimus, kaip ne-išvengiamai būtinus gyvenant ir dirbant daugiakalbėje ir daugiakultūrėje so-cialinėje aplinkoje. Aukštosios mokyklos studentai turi įgyti ne tik būtiną komunikavimui sociokultūrinėje aplinkoje bendrosios užsienio kalbos kom-petenciją, bet ir akademinės (gebėti klausytis paskaitų užsienio kalba, rengti pranešimus, dalyvauti konferencijose, diskutuoti, rašyti mokslinius darbus) bei profesinės (įgyti profesinį žodyną, skaityti profesinę literatūrą, diskutuo-ti specialybės temomis) užsienio kalbų kompetencijas būtinas sėkmingam funkcionavimui daugiakultūriniame ir daugiakalbiame veiklos pasaulyje. Užsienio kalbų kompetencijos plėtojimo aktualumas, kiek globalumo tiek ir asmeninės brandos mastu, gimtosios šalies ar tarptautinėje erdvėje, visose gyvenimo srityse (asmeninėje ir visuomeninėje, profesinėje ir akademinėje) ir visose žmogaus gyvenimo pakopose mokymosi visą gyvenimą paradigmoje leidžia įžvelgti ir suformuluoti egzistuojančią užsienio kalbų kompetencijos plėtojimo aukštojo mokslo lygmenyje problemą.
Tyrimo paskirtis.

Teachers today face many challenges. They need to equip students to be able to function and be successful in the 21st Century World. Integration of technology into the classroom enables to make content more useful, more personal, more valuable and it demands a change in the student-teacher re-lationship. Learning gradually becomes a true partnership between teachers and students and classrooms are moving towards a form of blended learning. Examples of practical ways of dealing with aspects of the digital revolution in our classrooms will be provided during the talk.
Besides, Pearson Professional Development Programme for teachers sup-ported by the Association of Language Teachers of Lithuania (LKPA) aims to empower teachers and is one of the forms to support ELT specialists and pro-vide practical, ongoing educational assistance and advance teacher learning.

Do You Really hear Me or Even See Me Sitting here?Language within the Cultural Context of the Classroom
Language is embedded in one’s culture. Learning language is a recipro-cal process for we learn language through culture and transmit the culture through language. Using an ecological position examine the culturally and linguistically diverse (C&LD) classroom, this qualitative research paper uses Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model that sees differences as strengths rather than as deficits in layers of alienation. It suggests the culturally congruent classroom has a significantly lower dropout rate, failure rate and enjoys high-er success in academic achievement. The paper also looks at language acqui-sition in the culturally responsive classroom that has a culturally competent teacher. It uses a biopsychosocial lens to see the entire student and family. It examines the achievement gap through the eyes of the school, the teacher, and qualitatively presents first voices’ accounts of experiences, while offer-ing some suggestions in discussion format regarding narrowing that gap for linguistically diverse students.

Make English Come Alive!
Why Alive?Students want lively lessons in English, and why not? What do they re-
member best, a dull lesson or an exciting one? What makes the cells in their brains connect, a passive lesson or an active one? So let’s give them pizzazz.
Some teachers reserve such lively, varied lessons for children, but my col-leagues and I use them for students of all ages and professions. We mix our more serious activities with seemingly frivolous activities to hold our stu-dents’ attention. Who would guess, for example, that adults would respond well to games, songs, and even outdoor activities. But they do. I fondly recall hiking up a hill with science professors in Hungary, singlng in English at the tops of our voices. Did this help them learn English? Of course it did. People learn quickly when they are relaxed and having fun.
