Dear Parent/Guardian: The federal law, The No Child Left Behind Act provides an opportunity for eligible students to receive, at no cost to parents, FREE Tutoring known as Supplemental Educational Services (SES). Eligible students are those who attend PI Year 2 schools and meet other criteria as defined by the federal government. Your school is offering SES programs. Demand for FREE Tutoring may exceed available funding. As a result, the Garden Grove Unified School District has set eligibility priorities. Not all students who apply will receive tutoring services; however, all interested parents are encouraged to apply. The FREE Tutoring services are offered after school or on weekends by organizations and agencies approved by the California State Board of Education. You may select a tutoring agency from the list provided in the FREE Tutoring Brochure. Free Tutoring Brochures are available in the school office and on the GGUSD website at ggusd.us. The brochure describes the services and qualifications of each tutoring agency to help you decide which one will best meet the needs of your child. When you are ready to select a tutor, please complete an application and turn it in to your child’s school office. Please submit your FREE Tutoring Application to your school office by October 30, 2015. If you have any questions, please call the school office or the Department of K-12 Educational Services at 714-663-6005. Trường của con em quý vị đang cung ứng Dịch Vụ Hỗ Trợ Giáo Dục. Why did I receive this FREE Tutoring Brochure? Your child may be eligible for FREE Tutoring. Tutoring is provided by state-approved tutoring agencies. What is Supplemental Educational Services (SES)? Supplemental Educational Services (SES) is FREE Tutoring paid for under the No Child Left Behind Act. Tutoring is intended to help your child improve his/her English Language Arts (reading and writing), English Language Development (ELD), Math, or Science. How do I know if my child qualifies for the FREE Tutoring program? If your child qualifies for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program and is enrolled at a Program Improvement (PI) school in Year 2 or above, he/she may qualify for FREE Tutoring. Will all children who qualify receive FREE Tutoring services? No. Parents must apply to receive FREE Tutoring services for their children. Applications must be returned to the school office by the application due date. According to federal regulations, if demand for FREE Tutoring exceeds district funds available to pay for services, GGUSD will set eligibility priorities in order to serve the lowest achieving students. What is a tutoring agency or provider? A tutoring agency or provider is a state-approved private organization, company, or agency that will provide FREE Tutoring for your child. When will my child be tutored? Students will usually meet with tutors 2 to 3 times per week. Parents arrange a tutoring schedule directly with the tutor. Tutoring can be scheduled for after school, evenings, or on weekends. How many hours of tutoring will my child receive? The total number of FREE Tutoring hours available to each student varies by tutoring agency. Refer to the FREE Tutoring Brochure for the approximate number of hours that each tutoring agency will offer. How do I select a tutoring agency to provide FREE Tutoring for my child? 1. Select the subject area(s) for your child’s tutoring. You may select

one or more subjects. Tutoring agencies offer tutoring services in English Language Arts (reading and writing), English Language Development (ELD), Math, or Science.

2. Select the appropriate location and group size that best meets the needs of your child and family. Tutoring agencies offer services at a variety of locations including in your home, at your child’s school, at a public library or community center, or at their own tutoring center. Online tutoring is also available using a computer and Internet connection.

3. Review the information about each tutoring agency’s services in the enclosed FREE Tutoring Brochure.

Is transportation to SES tutoring provided? No. Parents are responsible for providing any necessary transportation to and from tutoring sessions. How do I enroll my child in FREE Tutoring? Complete an application and turn it in at your school office. Support will be available at your child’s school, or at the District Office. May I cancel services or change tutoring agencies? If I want to cancel service or change tutoring agencies after tutoring has begun, please complete and return a Tutoring Agency Change Form in your child’s school office. It may take up to 4 weeks before another tutoring agency is available. Must my child attend the program regularly? Yes. If he/she is absent more than 3 times, your child may be dropped from the program.

Where are tutoring services provided?

If other companies want to provide tutoring at schools, tutoring

agencies must enroll a minimum number of students in their

programs to qualify to use classrooms at Garden Grove Unified

School District schools. Use of school facilities is limited.

Tutoring by outside agencies at school is not guaranteed.

When are tutoring services offered?

Tutoring must take place after school hours or on weekends.

Ask if after school tutoring will begin immediately after school.

For in-home tutoring, ask if parents can schedule tutoring

sessions at times that will be best for their families.

How long are tutoring sessions?

Ask if there is flexibility in the length of tutoring sessions,

especially for very young students. For large group tutoring, ask

how the tutor structures activities so that all students receive

individualized instruction.

How often and for how long will my child be tutored?

Ask the tutoring agency how soon your child will start tutoring.

Ask how many weeks or months tutoring will last. Also ask

how many days and total hours of tutoring per week will be

provided.

What are your tutors’ qualifications?

Other than tutors from GGUSD, tutors from other agencies are

not required to have a teaching credential. Ask if tutors have

experience teaching English Language Arts, English Language

Development, Math, or Science. Ask if they have experience

working with students who struggle academically in school.

Ask if they have experience working with students who are

English Learners.

Do your tutors speak languages other than English?

Ask how tutors will inform you about your child’s progress in

your primary language.

Can you meet the learning needs of students with

disabilities?

If your child has disabilities, ask if the tutoring agency works

with students with similar disabilities. Tutoring agencies are not

allowed to discriminate against your child. All services should

be consistent with your child’s individualized educational

program (IEP) or specialized services under Section 504.

How will you meet my child’s academic needs?

Ask the tutoring agency how they will establish learning goals

and a tutoring plan for your child.

How will you inform me about my child’s progress?

Tutoring agencies are required to provide progress reports to

parents. Ask how often you will receive a progress report and

how it will be shared with you. Ask to see a sample progress

report to make sure that it is in a format that is understandable.

What will happen if my child does not show progress?

Ask if the tutoring agency guarantees their services. Ask what

will happen if your child does not show improvement after

completing the tutoring hours.
