Brian Foster Principal March 30, 2015 Dear Parents and Families of the Coddle Creek School Community, On Sunday, several students who attend Coddle Creek Elementary were involved in a gun accident, resulting in an accidental shooting. This incident occurred in one of our local neighborhoods and involves two of our students. Because our students are minors and because of privacy laws, we are obviously not allowed to give you specific information about the condition of the student or their names. The purpose of the letter is to serve as an important reminder of the following: *Discuss with children that it’s NEVER ok to play with guns. *Discuss the importance of gun safety with your children (especially if you have any type of firearms at home). *Remind you as parents of the importance of keeping any type of weapons secured in a gun cabinet or locked area so that children can’t have access to them. *Inform you that we will have counseling available if your child has concerns and needs to talk further about the incident. *Talk with your child about when to report things they may hear people talking about (related to guns, use of weapons, etc). As you talk with your children about this, please encourage them to help by not telling stories or rumors that may or may not be true. We talk about this in our bullying training sessions with them. If your child is upset about this situation please encourage them to tell their teacher that they need to see a counselor to discuss their concerns. While this accident did not happen at school, it’s important to know that your child is safe while at school. We will hold class meetings with students as necessary. Please be thinking of the families of the children involved in this accident, as we are sure that both families involved are worried and regret that this accident happened. If you have any questions about this letter please feel free to contact me at school. Thank you Brian Foster, M.A. Principal
