PASTOR’S REPORT Though often obscured by the everyday logistical demands of administrating our church, it is crucial for us all to remember that there are simply two relationships that matter in our Armenian Christian walk; our relationship with God and with God’s people, this church. The glue which holds these relationships together—I feel keenly as I reflect on this past year—is gratitude. And so, the longer I serve at St. Hagop, the more my pastoral report reflects this profound gratitude. First and foremost, I give gratitude to God for his many blessings on me and my family, and His abundant blessings on this community which have allowed us to come this far together.

God works through those who willingly serve him, so I am likewise grateful to those who joyfully took on the duties of leading our church, our 2015 Parish Council. Under the steady and able chairmanship of Michael Shahnasarian we accomplished much in 2015. Thanks to our other parish council members Artak Apyan, Eileen Barsamian Jennings, Mallory Maslar, Karen Minassian and Vicken Serpekian for all their generous work to serve our Lord and our community. Special thanks to our outgoing members, Chuck Begian, Dr. George Kamajian and Chuck Sarkisian whose years of hard work and dedication to this church goes beyond words, but carries on in their lived example of dedicated stewardship. Vardzknerd Katar! Thanks to all who are faithful stewards of our beloved church by giving the best of their time, talent and treasure and keeping St. Hagop Armenian Church always before them in prayer!

Weekly Bulletins/ Sermons

For every Sunday and major holiday, Fr. Hovnan produces a bulletin with the purpose of keeping our community in touch with each other and providing inspiration. He also writes a sermon for each Sunday. All bulletins and sermons are available online and have become a source of connection and spiritual growth for those who partake.

The Avedis

The Avedis-In 2015 four issues of the Avedis newsletter were produced and delivered to your homes. The writing, editing, and design of the Avedis is an enormous task. Thanks to Carla Megerian for her wonderful work in helping to produce our newsletter.

Website

Our best in class website continues to become more attractive and effective in communicating news about our mission, community and events as Armenian Christians. New this year is our industry standard, secure payment platform for online donations. In the 6 months of 2015 that the system was available,

$12,571 was donated online. The star of

our website remains our photos. Thanks to Teresa Haidarian for documenting the major events of our church life.

Community Survey

Arising from their fall retreat, the parish council compiled a community survey to make sure they were listening to what speaks to the heart of our church & community! 103 people (about 20%) responded to the survey, vastly improving our 2011 response rate. Survey answers have been made available alongside this report at the annual assembly and have helped the parish council plan for the years ahead.

Meetings

Churches make decisions as a group in meetings. Fr. Hovnan has led or attended numerous meetings with the following bodies during the past year:

Parish Council

ACYOA Srs/Jrs Youth

Sunday School

Nominating Committee

Diocesan Assembly

Auditing Committee

Women’s Guild

100th Anniversary Committee

Church Hall Committee

Genocide Memorial Committee

Diocesan Clergy Conference

Pastor Continuing Education

The Diocese mandates that all clergy participate yearly in a 3 day Lenten clergy to renew clergy spiritually as they journey through Lent. All expenses paid by Diocese.

During 2015, Fr. Hovnan finished his coursework for his Doctor of Ministry program at Andover Newton Theological School. Only his dissertation remains to be written to graduate, a goal for the future! The program is designed as ongoing training for full time clergy to sharpen skills and knowledge for ministry through distance learning. All expenses paid by the Diocese and Fr. Hovnan.

Charitable Projects

This year, St. Hagop continued its duty to model Christ in service of those in need. Our community supported these charitable projects in 2015:

PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN’S REPORT This past year was a unique, banner year for St. Hagop Armenian Church, and your Parish Council (PC) – inspired by God and guided by His hand - facilitated our work.

The PC governs church operations, and makes and implements policy and programming decisions. Perhaps most important, as stewards of St. Hagop’s resources and responsible for implementing tasks necessary to attain its vision and goals, PC members act to meld Armenian Christian values while tending to opportunities and challenges that arise within our congregation, diocese, worldwide Armenian community, and Christian family at large. These are not easy tasks!

Our recent congregation survey found parishioners overwhelmingly (71%) believe the PC is effective in its role; yet, many respondents (26%) indicated they were uncertain on this matter. This suggests our congregation needs more information about its PC’s activities.

My report as your PC chairman has 3 objectives: to highlight your PC’s parish life contributions; review key achievements during the recently completed church year; and, address our objectives for 2016 and beyond.

Parish Council Contributions to Parish Life

Your PC this past year was composed of Fr. Hovnan, (president), and 9 members elected from our congregation: Mallory Maslar (vice chairperson), Chuck Sarkisian (treasurer), Artak Apyan (assistant treasurer), Chuck Begian (secretary), Vicken Serpekian (assistant secretary), Eileen Barsamian-Jennings, George Kamajian, Karen Minassian, and me. Stepan Serpekian, past PC chairman, was an invaluable member of our efforts. Prayer, grounding in our Armenian Christian faith and heritage, and a discernment of our church’s calling to God’s work forged our agenda and decision-making.

The PC met monthly, dealing with church and related issues of the day. These ranged from managing the church’s finances and overseeing our physical property, to tending to truly monumental events - such as ensuring centennial genocide commemoration events were handled with dignity and aplomb, and doing our part to acknowledge and assist in crises facing our Christian brethren in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Also, your PC members led and served on virtually every committee vital to parish life. Examples include church hall construction, stewardship, Sunday school, Armenian Church Youth of America, social and cultural event programming, and all centennial genocide commemoration events – including our night of remembrance, erecting a genocide memorial on our church campus, and organizing community events inclusive of aerial fly-overs, billboards throughout Tampa Bay memorializing the genocide, and liaising with media and political groups.

Every Sunday PC members serve during Badarak. This entails tasks such as helping to ready the church for mass, greeting parishioners and visitors, participating in the Badarak service, counting weekly donations and tending to deposit details, and facilitating after-mass fellowship, including tasks associated with cleaning and closing the church property.

There are numerous behind-the-scenes activities, as well, in which PC members dutifully participate. For example, in conjunction with its role as stewards of St. Hagop’s resources and ambassadors of our congregation and diocese, the PC is charged with establishing and negotiating with Der Hayr his

Page 11: 2015 Annual Report€¦ · 2015 annual report. 1 table of contents agenda 2 minutes of the previous annual assembly (2014-2015) 3 pastor’s report 5 parish council chairman’s report

10

annual compensation package. This task - complicated by the irreconcilable challenge of valuing invaluable service to our Lord and congregation with real-life economic constraints – requires prayerful reflection, detailed analyses of fair standards, and earnest dialogue and humility.

St. Hagop sponsors faith development, cultural, and social events throughout the year. Our faith development programs have included an instructional Badarak service and adult Christian education programs; last year Der Hayr provided a special lecture series during the Lenten season. Also, we held our annual church bazaar, numerous barbecues commemorating American holidays and church feasts (including a Vartavar family picnic, and Assumption of Mary Blessing of the Grapes picnic), bake sales our Women’s Guild organized, and social events of all sorts, including a 5K walk, beach sunset wine gathering, and New Year’s Eve party.

Our ministries have included providing financial assistance to middle-east refugees, contributing food and clothing to local charity organizations, and even roadside cleaning of a section of Belcher Avenue adjacent to St. Hagop. Each year the church sponsors a young adult to attend a mission program in Jerusalem with other youth from the diocese; Nazely Wilson represented us last year. Our programming aims to address all sectors of our diverse congregation demographics and needs, which the PC painstakingly attempts to assess and respond.

Beyond our congregation, PC members liaison with the diocese on issues ranging from repayment of our church construction loan, sponsoring of the 2017 diocesan convention, and hosting visits from the Srpazan (Archbishop) and other diocesan representatives. The PC is active in the planning and execution of all of these programs.

After serving a maximum of 6 consecutive years, Chuck Begian rotates off the PC today. Also leaving the PC are George Kamajian and Chuck Sarkisian. Please thank our devoted brothers in Armenian Christian faith for their work and service. Today, we will elect new members to the PC, and our work will go on.

2015 Church Year Highlights

While 2015 was ripe with many high points, 3 events, from my perspective, were especially noteworthy: our centennial genocide commemoration events, the completion of our church hall construction, and our Srpazan’s episcopal visit.

St. Hagop rose to the monumental centennial genocide commemoration occasion. Parishioners and friends of Armenians coalesced, and the church became a sanctuary, cultural center, and religious wellspring. Plainly stated: St. Hagop became everything a person of faith could hope and pray for – a spiritual center in which to turn in times of darkness, understanding and acceptance, and rebirth. George Kamajian, Mallory Maslar, Chris Sassouni, and Jean Shahnasarian deserve special mention for their leadership in organizing and conducting our genocide programs.

The recent completion of our church hall – a project envisioned more than 40 years ago and brought to fruition during the past 3 years – was a true church community effort, shepherded by 2 incredible servants of God and St. Hagop, and made possible by divine intervention. One hundred and seventy five parishioners and friends of St. Hagop pledged approximately $1.1 million to construct a 7,000 square foot, multipurpose facility. The level of participation, amount raised in a short time, and facts that the project was completed on time, on budget, and with 100% of pledges collected is testimony to what a community committed to God’s work can accomplish.

Page 12: 2015 Annual Report€¦ · 2015 annual report. 1 table of contents agenda 2 minutes of the previous annual assembly (2014-2015) 3 pastor’s report 5 parish council chairman’s report

11

This project would not have been possible without the selfless efforts and sacrifices of 2 incredibly devoted Armenian Christian members of St. Hagop: Chuck Sarkisian and Stepan Serpekian. Chuck conceived and implemented the capital development project necessary to fund church hall construction. As PC treasurer, he also monitored costs as construction evolved.

Stepan tended to a multitude of construction details – from pre-qualifying prospective builders and, with our construction committee’s input, soliciting, and evaluating, bids; engaging the PC, Women’s Guild and all interested parishioners in design details (including selecting commercial kitchen equipment and sophisticated audiovisual systems); and, coordinating construction progress and inspections. His work required endless hours of labor and attention to detail. Stepan involved our entire congregation in the construction decision-making process. En route to building for St. Hagop a high quality facility in concert with its leadership and parishioners’ vision, Stepan’s work as our liaison between our builder, architect, and owner’s representative was truly exceptional.

Well done, Chuck and Stepan, our brothers in Christ. The county issued our certificate of occupancy just hours ahead of our 2015 New Year’s Eve party at our new hall . . . yes, God’s hand was guiding this project - from its beginning to its end!

Finally, our Srpazan’s visit last month offered a perfect faith-infused crescendo to our church year. His eminence, Khajag Barsamian, consecrated our church hall; he also celebrated with us our accomplishment and vision for dedicating this fine facility to further our Armenian Christian religion and heritage ambitions.

Priorities for the Upcoming Year

During a 2-day retreat in September 2015, your PC developed a church vision statement and 6 specific goals, which appear below. In general, the parish council framed the goals, presented in a preliminary fashion, to be accomplished within a 5-year period and beyond.

Vision Statement

To continuously evolve as the bedrock of the Tampa Bay Armenian Christian community, perpetuating our Armenian Christian religion and heritage.

Goals

1. To combine and streamline education and worship. 2. To develop an enhanced giving (stewardship and estates) program. 3. To repay a $200,000 construction loan to the diocese by 2023. 4. To expand St. Hagop ministries. 5. To make alternate transportation to worship services available to needful parishioners. 6. To develop an Armenian school for adults and children.

Our new church hall, increased operational costs, and expanding ministry activities will require additional funding. Further, our obligation to repay a loan the diocese extended St. Hagop to complete church construction in 2007 will add to our financial needs.

Last summer the PC negotiated with the diocese a plan to repay its $200,000 church construction loan. We made our first principal payment of 10%, last year, and have committed to repay the balance in 8 years or less. The diocese and Armenian Church Endowment Fund were generous in

Page 13: 2015 Annual Report€¦ · 2015 annual report. 1 table of contents agenda 2 minutes of the previous annual assembly (2014-2015) 3 pastor’s report 5 parish council chairman’s report

12

agreeing to waive all loan interest payments; this stipulation is contingent upon our commitment to adhere to our agreed-upon loan repayment terms. Otherwise, St. Hagop is subject to repaying past accrued interest of approximately $55,000, along with future interest at a rate of approximately 4% per year.

Among the challenges your new PC faces are generating the funds necessary to meet our growing expenses. St. Hagop has diligently investigated opportunities to enhance its income – including developing revenues through rental of our church hall, increasing revenues from existing and new events and programming (including the opportunity hosting the 2017 diocesan convention affords), and encouraging endowment and estate gifts. We have also been researching and analyzing best practices at other Armenian and non-Armenian churches, and are in the midst of developing a comprehensive stewardship development plan.

Seventy-two percent (72%) of respondents in our recent church survey answered affirmatively to a question about their willingness to participate in making an annual monetary pledge to St. Hagop. During the Srpazan’s visit to our church last month, I spoke with him about our ideas to implement a stewardship program in which we could offer parishioners an option to make an annual pledge; he responded affirmatively. Needless to say, stewardship development will continue to be a high PC priority during our 2016 church year.

Other major objectives your PC will address during the 2016 church year include establishing our new church hall – including formulating and implementing a myriad of policy, marketing, and operations decisions. In his unending service to our Lord, Chuck Sarkisian volunteered to assume the leadership of this important work. Our Women’s Guild, led by Lena Kotchounian, president, and Seta Serpekian, past-president, along with our PC and congregation at large, will facilitate Chuck’s efforts.

As noted above, St. Hagop will host the 2017 Eastern Diocese convention. Conducted over 5 days, we anticipate approximately 300 guests will attend. Stepan Serpekian, another role model to me and tireless servant to God, has yet again stepped-up, agreeing to lead us as chairman of this important project.

In sum, our church is strong, growing in numbers, and expanding its service ministries. God’s blessings to St. Hagop have also included a talented, passionate rector, and a devoted Yeretsgin. Our parish enjoys a rich spiritual life and, beyond our worship together, we are working hard to preserve our Armenian heritage and make efforts to serve our Lord as He would find pleasing.

God has, indeed, been good to St. Hagop Armenian Church. Our continued challenge is to live into the ministry He wills us to undertake, optimize use of the resources He bestowed upon us, and to promote Armenian Christian values our faith has instilled. With God’s help, we will continue our journey to attain these ideals.

TREASURER’S REPORT

God continues to bestow his blessings on St. Hagop Armenian Church (SHAC) making it possible to carry out our Lord's mission as eloquently articulated in Father Hovnan's message and Michael Shahnasarian's report. His blessings are also demonstrated in our significantly improved enclosed Balance Sheet. We thank God for his ongoing blessings and for all our parishioners who continue to give their time, talents and treasures to serve Him with joy in growing His Church.

I want to thank the Parish Council (PC) and all the parishioners for the privilege of serving both as a Chairman of the Church Hall Fund Raising Committee and your Treasurer. As I transition into my new role to help plan and manage the Shahnasarian Hall, I can truly say it has been a very rewarding experience which helped me grow personally and spiritually. Thank you.

I had two overriding objectives when I accepted the Treasurer role last year: First, to continue our practice in ensuring that our Church's operations are conducted in a fiscally responsible manner; and second to build on the process of continuous improvement in streamlining the administrative processes to facilitate succession planning.

Summary of SHAC Financial Condition as of December 31, 2015

I am pleased to report that SHAC's financial condition is strong as the enclosed Balance Sheet and comparison reports demonstrate. The bottom line is our "2015 Net Income" of $72,000 contributed to the increase in our total equity of $285,000 from the previous year. These net positive improvements include completing two major construction projects, the Genocide memorial and the Church Hall, as planned and on budget fully - 100% paid - through donated funds.

The following are key observations as we analyzed the last two years of income and expenses:

Our "Total Donations" income for 2015 (collection plate, etc.) were virtually the same as 2014 despite our growth. This may be explained by parishioners delivering on their pledge obligations to the Church Hall and other significant events such as the Genocide Memorial.

However, "Total Income" increased by about 35% mainly due to the $80,000 bequest of Mr. Unjian's estate to SHAC. This component alone played a most significant favorable factor in our 2015 operational budget. Moreover, it is an excellent example of our vision statement goal to develop an enhanced giving program for "stewardship, estates, gifts and endowments".

Controlling our expenses was another key contributor to our bottom line. "Total Expenses" were reduced by more than 15% from the previous year. The most notable reduction was in the area of special events. A special thanks to those special event champions and sponsors who elected to fund some of these expenses out of their own pockets.

We made our first payment of $20,000 against our loan to the ACEF (the loan was made to complete our church construction in 2007), thereby reducing our $200,000 liability proportionately. A special thanks to Michael Shahnasarian and Father Hovnan for negotiating a successful payment agreement. A contingent interest liability (approximately $50,000) becomes due if we fail to meet our annual payment obligation; also defaulting on our negotiated payment terms exposes SHAC to interest payment of 4%.

2015 P&L and 2016 Budget

The enclosed forecasted 2016 Budget and the 2015 actual Profit & Loss (P&L) statement allow for comparison of each major income and expenses category. The following are key assumptions in projecting our next year budget:

Page 15: 2015 Annual Report€¦ · 2015 annual report. 1 table of contents agenda 2 minutes of the previous annual assembly (2014-2015) 3 pastor’s report 5 parish council chairman’s report

14

Our estimated "Total Income" is projected at $235,000 about a 10% decrease from 2015. Critical components of the projected income assumption include:

o "Total Donations" are expected to increase by just 1.6%, a modest level over the previous year

o A projected income of about $29,000 to cover operating expenses associated with the Hall at a break-even level. The PC approved the rental fee schedule posted on SHAC websites

o Two generous families committed to a stewardship endowment pledge comprising the majority of the $43,000 budgeted amount.

o An anticipated $35,000 income from special events.

Our projected "Total Expenses" include the following major categories:

o Expenses to operate the Shahnasarian Hall estimated at $28,800

o A 1% increase in Father Hovnan's 2016 "Total Compensation" package as unanimously approved by the PC

o A 31% reduction in expenses associated with special events as we utilize our new Hall

o A $22,500 annual payment towards the loan to ACEF

o The necessary ongoing operating expenses

Continuous Improvement In Our Administrative Process

We have made a concentrated effort to streamline our processes and reporting to ensure ease of understanding and operations, especially during successions of roles and responsibilities. We are deeply indebted to Jean Shahnasarian, a devoted parishioner, and a Certified Public Accountant with expertise in non-profit organization for her ongoing help and support throughout the year and the year-end budgeting and reporting process. Her unending support provides an enhanced assurance that our accounting practices are in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. A special thanks to our bookkeeper Sandi Olivia who continues to support us with our bookkeeping and other administrative activities. We can now generate and issue the required IRS forms with ease. In addition, we have developed an easy to understand monthly dashboard summary report to the PC which provides a complete financial overview at a glance. Moreover, each Church programming initiative adopted by the PC was presented with a clear plan inclusive of anticipated funding and expenses; this helped us in the overall fiscal management of these endeavors. It is noteworthy to observe that we added about $61,000 to our restricted maintenance reserve account to fund for maintenance and other contingencies.

Summary

SHAC's financial condition grew stronger in 2015. We have a newly built wonderful Hall next to our beautiful Church and only one remaining financial liability, the ACEF loan which we negotiated to pay off in the next eight years. We have a challenging budget for 2016 but a clear and bright vision for our future. We are truly blessed with a devoted, committed and thriving Parish that is accustomed to meeting challenges with God's help. Arach Asdvaz. We are truly blessed indeed.

DIOCESAN DELEGATES’ REPORT Day 1 The 113th Annual Diocesan Assembly began with Worship and a message from the Archbishop. Discussion about the Genocide and how Armenians in America united in the recognition of the event 100 years ago. He stated all Armenians should share the legacy of our Martyrs. He also said this event should be remembered so that it will never happen to other people. On the 100-year anniversary, he noted the legacy of the Armenian people. The Archbishop asked what would be our legacy over the next 100 years? He spoke about the children and our sense of connection. Between youth and elderly, between Armenian and non-Armenian. He said our connection should be with God and US. Discussion about our overall strategic plan:

Good effort

Very ambitious plan

Spoke about enhancing clergy with continuing growth

Spiritual development – annual retreats

Intellectual developments

Annual St Nersess seminar on pertinent topics

Local opportunities for professional development

Family marriage issues

Contemporary issues (gay marriage/preaching)

Conflict resolution etc.

Proactive outreach

Outreach to youth

Increase database of potential parishioners

Develop marketing programs to reach out to parishioners on an ongoing basis

Set up youth database The Catholicos addressed the diocese assembly. His message was one that described the difficulties of the church and the rebuilding process, about the genocide and how the church has grown in the past 100 years. He also described the challenges the church has had in Armenia, where atheistic government tried to suppress the church. He spoke about bylaws as being essential and necessary for the progress of the spiritual care of Armenians. He spoke about the coordination of bylaws in Armenia and elsewhere. This has been a thorn in his side as he wanted the bylaws to be congruent throughout the world, but the US diocesan assembly did not vote as he wished. In the past he called an emergency session to re-vote but the results were the same, and he wasn’t happy about that. He passed out a message that said in one section as follows: “Acknowledging with appreciation the work done in the Easter Diocese of the USA, we must note that the work of implementation of the provisions of the guideline document into the diocesan bylaws is still not complete” … “in past years incorrect interpretations have been given regarding the acceptance of the bylaws, sometimes even expressions of inappropriate distrust. “ When the bylaws were discussed there was a very heated debate, with people opposed to the bylaws that gave discretion to the Ecclesiastical Representative Assembly that trumps our diocese. (See below under ERA) There was also a video presentation concerning the church and it’s direction. The video illustrated how the church is strong in Armenia after the destructive forces of the Soviet Union left the country.

Page 17: 2015 Annual Report€¦ · 2015 annual report. 1 table of contents agenda 2 minutes of the previous annual assembly (2014-2015) 3 pastor’s report 5 parish council chairman’s report

16

At the assembly, people were invited to ask questions of the Catholicos. Questions were asked about the bylaws and the Catholicos spoke passionately about the structure of the bylaws. He felt the bylaws would bring order to the life of the church. (There has been controversy concerning one issue of choosing the Archbishop among others.) This issue kept surfacing and the Catholicos spoke at length about the standardization of bylaws around the world. There was also discussion about the use of the Armenian language in Church with people at the assembly suggesting use of English might be a better choice in the churches. However the Catholicos said there are more people that can teach Armenian. But our folks were just as passionate about the democratic process, and he felt and stated, “at some point you have to trust me”. The afternoon session had people discussing the accomplishments of various initiatives that were affected in the past year. Discussions about youth activities etc. were shared with the Assembly. Other topics such as measured growth strategies were discussed. Day 2 Film about the Genocide and the canonization of those killed – with actual footage of people marching through the desert, with horsemen charging. A profound film about the Genocide and our Christian roots. It also documented the canonization of all those who perished in the genocide some of the scenes in this video were difficult to watch. When I asked for a copy of the video, I was told that it would be on line and available to all parishes. Hopefully Vasken can make it happen at our meeting. There were reports from the ACYOA. They specifically reported the Chapter Workshop at St Hagop. Folks got to question the ACYOA representative, and there were many accolades. Fr. Hovnan added his to the list of voices praising the programs and accomplishments of the ACYOA during the year. Discussion about Mission Parishes and the challenges of attracting members and strengthening the Church. Some mission Parishes have 25 people or less. There was discussion about the need for funds. Also much discussion about the strengthening of parish councils. Woman’s guild reported, and what was interesting was the statement they have to be responsive to women from age 25 to 95 There was a lot of information given to the Assembly about the economic strength of the diocese and financial problems. The Diocese budget is almost five million dollars a year. It seems that this year the diocese hemorrhaged money, but I think that was because of the 100th anniversary of the genocide. The diocese has a line of credit, which has been almost completely used. It’s a half million-dollar line and the interest on what has been taken out for cash flow is about $136.00 a day!!!! Hence the reason the Diocese is looking for cash. There is a cash flow deficit of around $200,000.00 annually. Reviewing the proposed budget was a challenge, some of the numbers (in my humble opinion) didn’t add up, and people questioned it, but after all was said and done, we passed a budget with a planned loss. Proposed budget will be attached to this report. I learned that the health of St Hagop church is strong relative to the strength of all churches as measured in terms of membership. The graph below is a relative graph indicating growth in members (not absolute number of members) several churches have more members than St Hagop however their numbers are declining while ours are increasing.

Page 18: 2015 Annual Report€¦ · 2015 annual report. 1 table of contents agenda 2 minutes of the previous annual assembly (2014-2015) 3 pastor’s report 5 parish council chairman’s report

17

Voting was painful, as many repeat votes had to be taken. I think the voting process could be streamlined. I thought that was something the host parish could do, but later learned the nominating committee controls that process. I had been nominated to be on the nominating committee and lost (thankfully) but had I been elected, I could have advanced an effort to change the process. Report on St Nersess Seminary – there is a new campus and the old is in the process of being sold, but has not been sold as yet. Budget was discussed, with a loss of $114,573! But if you eliminate depreciation there is a positive cash flow of $69,420. The assembly passed the budget with the loss. Then there was a heated discussion about the proposed ERA (Ecclesiastical Representative Assembly) diocesan global bylaw guidelines. The discussion was lengthy and very heated. One speaker said “we may not like the new bylaws but we’ve spent so much time and energy let’s just do it.” But another person said of the new bylaws there is no provision for the local diocesan assembly to vote for a change or controlling how the bylaws are amended. In other words, what comes out of Armenia is the law and we don’t vote if we decide to do this. But the chair said the voting would happen in Armenia at the ERA. The person that was opposed sounded like an attorney (I believe he was) and repeated said the new bylaws are handcuffs on the parishes and diocese in America. The gentleman opposed stated chapter and verse from the new guidelines and reported the sections, which stated all control is taken from the local diocesan assemblies across the world. The discussion went on for over an hour. Discussion about Debt reduction. There was some debt reduction but a large group that had rented our hall now has purchased their own facility, so there was a loss of over 100,000 dollars in income that was a setback to say the least. What was said we can’t run events that lose money! Toward the end of the assembly, people from St Gregory of Narek Church in Cleveland passed out information about Cleveland, which was in a bag that announced the 114th Diocesan Assembly. WOMEN’S GUILD REPORT The women’s guild—under the capable leadership of Lena Kotchounian—has been very busy this past year with bake sales, flower arrangements for the altar, and preparing for coffee hour fellowship and cleaning up after the fellowship. If no one from the congregation signed up to provide coffee hour for any given Sunday, the guild members pull from their own pocket and supply the food and drink for the entire congregation. We purchased supplies for the new kitchen so we could better serve our members. We provided seasonal flower arrangements for the altar every Sunday and Louise has offered to teach anyone her secret to the art of beautiful flower arrangements. We baked Armenian goodies for our semi-annual bake sales and drove to Orlando to pick up the lahmajoun we sold from Toufayan bakery. We continued to donate to an Armenian orphanage. And we sent out get well or sympathy cards to members in need. Respectfully Submitted,

SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT Sunday School started on September 13th with a parent-teacher meeting during coffee hour to kick off registration. Registration was open to youth from pre-k to 5th grade. We had a total of 5 students register. Sunday School is held from 11-11:45am every Sunday of the month. Attendance has varied from twenty-four to one student and there is on average four students. This year, we introduced curriculum from the Christian Education Department titled, We Believe. The goal of the new curriculum series was “to bring the learner into a living relationship with Jesus Christ, within the Church- the Body of Christ- through the Holy Tradition of the Armenian Church.” Overall, the curriculum has helped students explore four fundamental questions: 1. Who is God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)? 2. How do we come to know him through the familiar and life-giving Tradition of the Armenian

Church and through her story? 3. How are our lives transformed by that knowledge? 4. How do we live in Christian community with that knowledge? Outside of class every Sunday, we have hosted monthly events including a Kickball Tournament, a Friendsgiving Potluck, our annual gingerbread competition, and a bible blessing from Surpazan. We are looking forward to our spring events including making valentine cards for patients at All Children’s Hospital, Armenian cooking classes, and an end of the year pool party.

Thank you to Mallory Maslar, Nazley Wilson, Courtney Serpekian, and Hayley Hovhanessian for your support with Sunday School and being egger to teach every Sunday. Thank you to Alex Oganesova for leading the ACYOA Juniors this year and Yn. Anna for leading the Hye Baby group. Thank you for all of your hard work! We look forward to watching our youth- the future of our church- grow and lead.
