Frankie Valens will perform atthe Hugoton High School one hun-dredth year reunion dinner Satur-day evening. Classes from the1930s through the 1960s willenjoy Oklahoma Smoke’s catereddinner at 5:00 p.m., while Frankieperforms in the West Gym.Classes from the 1970s through2015 will take in the “HHSAlumni Stars” program in the au-ditorium at 5:00 p.m. At 6:30 p.m.,the two groups will switch places,with the 1930s through 1960sgrads watching the “HHS AlumniStars” program, and the 1970sthrough 2015 graduates dining.

Frankie Valens was a nightclubsinger in the late ‘60s and early‘70s whose signature song was“This Magic Moment”. He alsorecorded “Smoke Gets in YourEyes” and “She Cried”. Frankietoured the United States andCanada and was showcased inLas Vegas. He was also an extra

in the movies “Ice Castles” and“Every Which Way But Loose”.

Frankie had the opportunity ofsinging on the same ticket withthe late president Ronald Reaganand country singer Crystal Gale.He also sang for the inaugurationof the former mayor of San Diegoas well as for former Californiagovernor Pete Wilson’s sixtiethbirthday party at Sea World inSan Diego, Ca. The Byrds, ThePlatters and The Boxtops are ‘60sgroups with whom Frankie hasshared the spotlight.

Frankie’s wife Phyllis is an ac-complished concert pianist whoplays many different styles ofmusic including ragtime, patrioticand inspirational. She also joinsFrankie in singing with him insome “oldies” duets.

Frankie and Phyllis traveled intheir ministry for 18 years beforecoming off the road for forced re-tirement due to health problems.

They are back again, doing whatthey do best - singing and playing.

Some people not involved with the HHS marching band from the late 60smight not remember, but it is a sure bet that if you were involved, this bringsback great memories and is a source of even greater pride. This group tooktop honors in about every competition they entered. They were even invitedto perform for an NFL game halftime. This picture is from a Garden Citycompetition October 30, 1967, where a I+ was earned by the outstanding per-formers. In 1966 the high school drum majorette was Cathy Cowan and Dave Catronwas the Hugoton High School band instructor. This picture is from a GardenCity competition in October of 1966. As usual the amazing marching bandfrom little old Hugoton outranked the other competitors and was awardedthe coveted I+. It was an amazing time for the next few years for these highschool kids that was surely not forgotten. Dave Catron was later recruitedby another school and Dave Darnell took his place. Stevens County Hospital will celebrate 65 years in July

At left is the hospital at the dedication ceremony July 10, 1950 after construction wascompleted. Sixty-five years ago the hospital was a 20-bed facility featuring the newestintercommunication system available. Today the hospital is licensed for 25 beds,

two emergency room beds, and baosts some of the latest in technology, includingcomputerized records, as well as modern X-Ray and CT machines. The hospital un-derwent extensive renovation in 2000 and has been named a Critical Access Hospital.

Abengoa Bioenergy began their Hugoton operation in October 2014,and currently employs approximately 85 people in the area. When fullystaffed, they will employ about 100 people. The company producesethanol using materials from local farmers that would normally beconsidered waste. Grain ethanol decreases greenhouse gas emissions

by up to 57 percent compared to gasoline. Cellulosic ethanol, like thatbeing produced at Abengoa’s Hugoton facility, is expected to reducegreenhouse gas emissions by 100 percent or more. The United States ishome to more than one billion tons of biomass that can be convertedto 80-100 billion gallons of ethanol.

Dollar General opened the doors at their new location June 17, 2015.The new store contains a much larger and varied selection, as well asa generous refrigerated and frozen grocery section.

Sixth Street has a new face as well. Milk River is a transporation company, specializing in milk. They came to Hugoton in March 2015and currently employ about eight people.

Linn Energy acquired the local ExxonMobil location in 2014.

Business in Hugoton has cer-tainly picked up since the last allschool reunion back in 2010. Newbusinesses have popped up allover town, several warrantingnew construction.

Abengoa Bioenergy is one of the

most impressive businesses tocome to Hugoton in the past fiveyears, setting up shop just a mileeast of town on Road P. The siteis the first of its kind in theUnited States, producing ethanolusing biomass technology. Aben-

goa hosted their grand openingOctober 17, 2014.

Kansas Dairy Ingredients is an-other large operation that beganoperating in Hugoton April 2,2013. The company processes overone and a half million pounds ofmilk per day, and employs approx-imately 60 people.

Other new businesses includethe brand new Thrifty King gro-cery store on the east side ofHugoton at 910 E. Eleventh. An-other newly open business is LB’sBar and Grill at 615 S. Monroe. Abrand new thrift shop, ColorRave, is also now open at 206 W.Fifth in Hugoton. They offer “AThread of Color or A Grain ofHome” including furniture, cloth-ing for the whole family, home

decor, toys, cookware, shoes, gar-dening supplies, tools, sewing sup-plies and more!

Main Street features a few newfaces as well, including TannerRindels’ Farm Bureau office at515 S. Main. Valles Importacionesis located at 610 S. Main. Theyoffer contemporary clothing,shoes, jewelry and more! HugotonDrug opened at 531 S. Main, in-side the old Porter Building, Tues-day, March 31. Superior Irrigation moved from to928 E. Eleventh in 2013. Willis SeedSales erected a new building at 928Main Street this past year. JimGhumm is now the proud owner ofGhumm's Collision Center at 1401Cemetery Road and NAPA AutoParts at 601 S. Jackson. Valero, atthe intersection of Eleventh andWashington, underwent some re-modeling back in 2013/14 and nowboasts a larger store and many moreamenities.

Dominoes Bar and Grill now fea-tures slightly different fare than it

did in 2010 - it's a mix of new Mexi-can dishes and old favorites. Rightnext door to Dominoes, you can findThe Steakhouse at 508 S. Main.Their menu features several differentstyles of food, including Mexicanitems and comfort food. If you wantto grab a drink after dinner, Barb'sDen has moved locations, and you

Forewinds Golf Course is a nine-hole course and offers golf cart rentalsand a beautiful club house. They are located two miles west of Hugotonon Highway 51.

Stevens County Fitness Center offers numerous machines for liftingweights, as well as a walking track and fitness classes. They are locatedon East Highway 51 and are open from 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mondaythrough Thursday.

Hugoton’s pool entertains kids and adults of all ages during the summer months. The pool is open from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. daily, andadult swim is from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. eachday.

The Stevens County Health Department moved to their new location,505 S. Polk, last summer. They offer WIC, immunizations, publictransportation, children’s daycare physicals, school physicals, daycarelicensing, vaccinations for travel and lab services for uninsured andunderinsured patients, as well as chronic disease management classes.

Kansas Dairy Ingredients began operation April 2, 2013, and reportsthey have doubled their output since then. They now process over amillion and a half pounds of milk per day. KDI employs about 60 peo-ple.

Project Hope serves approximately 85 families every month. ProjectHope moved from their first location into the Ag 1st building on southMain Street in 2010 and expanded into their current location in June2014. Families must provide proof of residence in Stevens County, butthere are no other criteria. Donations come from the state’s food bank,local food drives and surrounding grocery stores. Project Hope alsohas a 12 member board made up of volunteers that meets monthly.

munity". Project Hope, Peace HouseMinistries and Pheasant HeavenCharities Inc. ensure no one in thearea feels hopeless whether theirneeds are physical or spiritual.

Project Hope is Hugoton's sourcefor the food-insecure. The organiza-tion feeds as many as 350 to 400people in a given month, providingmeat, fresh produce, bread, andpantry staples to any StevensCounty resident. Project Hope hasbeen at their new location, 1042 S.Jackson, since fall 2013. They arethe recipients of countless fooddrives hosted by area schools andorganizations, and they also host anannual Tea Party and RummageSale. Project Hope is open Tuesdayand Thursday mornings from 8:30to 11:30 a.m.

Peace House Ministries is a non-denominational mission to help

women and their children develop arelationship with the Lord. The or-ganization was founded by PattyBultman and Patty Lahey, and pro-vides a safe place for women andtheir children in the StevensCounty area. Peace House hostsBible studies and one-on-one coun-seling. They also teach life skillsand help women as God leads.Peace House also hosts weekend re-treats. Patty Bultman is a certifiedChristian counselor and the authorof the Peace House books, “CommonThreads” and its sequel “CommonPaths”. Hugoton’s frisbee golf course is located at Ray Dean Park in the southern part of town.
