welcOme tO the australian siDes champiOnships

On behalf of the board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Queanbeyan Bowls Club and Queanbeyan RSL Memorial Bowls Club for the 2016 Australian Sides Championships.

The greens of The naTion’s capiTal are poised To become a hunTing ground for 194 of The sporT’s mosT proficienT bowls’ combaTanTs This week, as They descend on The ciTy for The sporT’s premier sTaTe-versus-sTaTe compeTiTion.

Queanbeyan Bowls Club and Queanbeyan RSL Memorial Bowls Club have the unique honour of jointly hosting this year’s championships, marking the first time the event has been held across two separate clubs for more than eight years, when the tournament was last staged in the ACT at Tuggeranong Valley and Weston Creek in 2008.

All eight state and territories will compete, with the exception of the Northern Territory’s women’s team which is a notable omission, from Thursday to Sunday across the two venues.

It will be hard to look past defending champions NSW in both the men’s and women’s fields, after their come-from-behind victory against the top placed South Australian team in the 11th hour of the men’s final match 12 months ago, which spurred a whitewash of all three coveted trophies; the men’s Alley Shield, women’s Marj Morris Trophy and the Overall Championships silverware.

The Blues have made a few inclusions in both genders to sure up their chances of success this year, with 22 year-old reigning Australian Open singles champion Aaron Teys headlining the additions for the men, which also includes Chris Herden and Jesse Noronha,

while 2014 Australian Indoor Championships winner Jamie-Lee Worsnop, 18, and Victorian convert Samantha Shannahan bolster the women’s line-up.

This event boasts added impetus for the NSW men’s team, who are hunting their 20th Alley Shield Victory, with the women looking to capture their 11th while also extending their record breaking run of consecutive wins to five straight.

Challengers will be lining up from all angles to knock off the defending champions though, with none better positioned than the South Australian contingent, who will look to secure just their second ever Shield win, and in the process break a 25 year drought, considering their stellar performance and narrow miss at last year’s event in Western Australia.

The Croweaters have made two additions to strengthen their team in the men, in Michael Lodge and Marc Evans, while the women have been more liberal with their inclusions in an effort to claim their maiden Marj Morris Trophy, with Susan Hutchison, Chris Thulborn, Judy Underwood, Jodi Kotz and Alex Reynolds breaking into the team for 2016.

As always, the Queensland outfit is sure to feature in the mix, with the men gunning for their 14th Shield and the women looking to enter the double digits with their 10th.

The Maroon men and women have each made four new selections to enhance their teams, with last year’s Australian Open pairs finalists Samuel White and Braiden Leese joining Steven McNamee and Scott De Jongh, while dual Australian

proving grounds

5

Open women’s pairs winner Emma Brown has been given the nod, in addition to Melissa Larcombe, Wendy Wilson and Sue Brady.

The ACT is sure to harness support from the local community in their attempt to capture a maiden title in either gender, and will benefit greatly from Andrew Howie’s return after a series with the Blues that resulted in an Alley Shield victory as part of the best performed rink, as well as the inclusions of Daniel Wilson, Joel McInnes, Peter Watts and Robert Kyle in the men, and Jessica Hogan, Kellie Cartledge and Chloe Morrison in the women.

Victoria is also past due for a top of the table Sides finish, with the men last triumphing in 2002 and the women in 2004.

The Big V will purse a ninth Shield and fifth Trophy, with Liam Garlick-Adams, Josh Corless, Dale Jones, Brad Orr, Brooke Edwards, Lisa Phillips, Tiffany Brodie and Gayle Edwards as inclusions, with Australian Jackaroo Barrie Lester given the nod to skipping duties.

While Tasmania has yet to taste success in either gender, and the Northern Territory have never prevailed in the men’s field before, neither side should be ruled out of contention this week.

the 2016 australian Open fast apprOaching, anD sO is the clOsing Date fOr entries intO this year’s 14 Day festival Of bOwls On the gOlD cOast.

Participation is expected to increase on last year’s record-breaking numbers after the tournaments move to the Queensland tourist destination proved very popular.

For those who are undecided about taking part in the world’s richest bowls event, here are some reasons why the Australian Open should be on your ‘To Do’ list for 2016!

• By entering the Singles, Pairs and Fours you are guaranteed 3 days of bowls and a minimum of eight games of sectional play.

• The introduction of Men’s and

Women’s Over 60’s Pairs will be a great inclusion to this year’s event.

• The Gold Coast is the perfect location to combine a holiday with playing in a world-class bowls event; the weather, the beaches, restaurants, nightlife and four world famous theme parks for the kids; there is something for everyone on the Gold Coast.

• The prize money is now a HUGE $250,000 and will be distributed down as low as the loosing round of 128 in the men’s singles. This ensures that a greater number of participants will receive a return on their entry fee.

• The Gold Coast has an amazing array of accommodation options; with so many hotels and holiday houses available, you can pick up a bargain and still be in the heart of all the action.

• Champions are born at the Australian Open; last year’s winners Ellen Ryan and Aaron Teys have both worked their way into the Australian Jackaroos Squad since their remarkable victories in the blue ribbon singles event.

• 20 disciplines on offer in 2016 including events for juniors and bowlers with a disability.

• The player of the event will be rewarded with $1500 as determined by the person who accumulates the most national ranking points.

• Who wouldn’t want to spend two weeks enjoying the wonderful Queensland weather that is renowned to be beautiful one day, perfect the next!

• The 2016 Australian Open will feature up to 15 of the Gold Coasts best bowling clubs, all of which boast wonderful greens all year round.

• Could you be the player that causes the biggest upset of the tournament; knocking off an international superstar or qualifying for the final of the pairs or singles to be televised LIVE on Fox Sports?

The most important information you need is the tournament dates; June 11-24 and entries close on April 3.

If you have your teams sorted and are ready to enter the world’s biggest bowls event, head to australianopen.bowlsaustralia.com.au to enter.
