2 boise rotary century scholars program • TUEsday, aPril 12, 2016
Welcome to the eleventh annual Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program! This very special event is being sponsored by three of the Treasure Valley’s Rotary Clubs to recog-nize the exceptional value our entire com-munity places on high academic achievement. Our celebration has also received strong sponsorship support from the community in the form of other grants and in-kind services.
During the evening of Tuesday, April 12th, 2016, our invited audience of hundreds will gather in the Jordan Ballroom at Boise State University to applaud the accomplishments of the top 100 graduating seniors, the Century Scholars, from Boise’s public and non-public high schools. “Cream of the crop” student achievers from Bishop Kelly, Boise, Borah, Capital, Frank Church, Riverstone, Sage and Timberline high schools will be profiled and honored by family, friends and representatives of our community’s business, government, civic, education and service sectors.
Each student being recognized has substantially exceeded the minimum program grade point average requirement of 3.75 and represents the best in music, the arts, service to community, athletics and academics in each of our high schools. Our honorees also serve as role models for younger siblings and other students throughout Boise who look to them for leadership and guidance.
In addition to the 100 Boise Rotary Cen-tury Scholars being recognized, every student will be accompanied by an educator they have selected as having significant influence on their academic development during their school career. These influential teachers and counselors represent the many talented and dedicated educators throughout our com-munity who are committed to the ongoing success of all students. Each educator will be honored during the program along with the student who selected them.
For the program’s main speaker, the planning committee has once again identi-fied an individual who graduated from one of the Boise Area high schools and went on to achieve success in education, career and life. Our 2016 program will feature Capital High School alumni Dr. Jason Bronner to deliver the Distinguished Alumnus Address. You can read more about Dr. Bronner and his accomplish-ments on page 14.
Some might ask, why would the Rotary Clubs of Boise want to sponsor such an event as the Century Scholar Program? Our answer is quite simple. Our students are our future!
Encouraging them in their pursuit of excellence brings value and the promise of leadership to our community. This program provides us the opportunity to recognize the attainment of excellence by the top 100
of this class of Boise’s graduating seniors. It also allows us the opportunity to reward and honor representative educators who have played such a major role in the success of each of our students.
With all the attention being paid to high school graduates going on to college, we thought it would be important to share with you how Century Scholars are doing. The college-going rate of the 2014 Boise Rotary Century Scholars stands at 95%, well above Idaho’s average college-going rate of 50.2%. These percentages are for students who graduated from high school and then attended 2 or 4 year colleges 12 months after graduation. I think you’ll agree that is an impressive college-going rate! In addition, the schools they are attending include the top schools in our country, everything from Stanford and Pepperdine on the West Coast to Harvard, Yale and West Point in the East, with wonderful schools in between like Rensellaer Polytechnic and Wesleyan University.
Rotary is all about the development of leadership and service above self. Boise’s Rotarians believe that the greatest value of the Century Scholars Program is in recognizing students who are striving to be leaders and also applaud the dedication of our educators and the critical role they play in helping stu-dents grow as learners and as people.
The well-being of our city, state, nation and world is dependent upon the minds and hearts of those we honor in this year’s Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program and those who will follow after them. From our vantage point, we are in good hands and our future looks bright. Thanks for being a part of this memorable event.
Sincerely,Beatrice BlackChair 2016 BoiseRotary CenturyScholars Program

FOR EDUCATION IN IDAHORAISING THE BAR
Great things are happening in your Boise schools! At our core, we are
about rigor, achievement, citizenship and college and career readiness.
Our focus continues to pay dividends for our students. Our SAT scores are
among the highest of any large school district in Idaho. Our college-going
rate continues to increase (topping 61% in 2015), and we have more
students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math than
in any other area.
For the seventh year in a row—thanks to our broad offering of Advanced
Placement courses— Boise, Borah, Capital and Timberline were ranked
in the top 11% of the Washington Post’s list of America’s Most
Challenging High Schools. And at the elementary level, we continue
to offer more choices for students than any other district, including
Montessori, Dual-Language Immersion, Classical and International
educational programs and schools. For more information,
please visit boiseschools.org.
Congratulations Rotary Scholars
and the Class of 2016!

Distinguished Alumnus AddressBoise Rotary Century Scholars Program
■ DR. JASON BRONNER
In the development of the Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program, committee members and Boise Rotary leaders felt that an essential part of the evening program would be an address to student honorees, significant educators and guests by a distinguished alumnus from one of the eight participating high schools. Who better to excite and inspire this prestigious group of students than an individual who also graduated from high school in the City of Boise and went on to interesting and varied careers and recognized success in life.
In this, the eleventh year of the Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program, we are proud to announce the selection of Capi-tal High School graduate Jason Bronner, MD, Internal Medicine, St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center (CHS – 1992) to deliver the Distinguished Alumnus Address.
Jason Bronner was born and raised in Boise, Idaho where he attended schools in the Boise School District - Cole Elementary School, Fairmont Junior High School and in 1992 he graduated from Capital High School.
Jason went on to attend University of Idaho earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology in 1997. In 2001, he

Why Rotary?
The Greater Boise Rotary Foundation presented the non-profit Boise WaterShed Exhibit, Inc. with an unprecedented $17,000 donation. The money will fund a ground-water exhibit in the Boise WaterShed River Campus.
Boise WaterShed Exhibits President Lynn Moser said, “From being a leader in the eradication of Polio to their incredible Youth Exchange program, Rotary has always been on the forefront of social causes in our com-munity and the world. We are pleased to have them join our water conservation mission. It demonstrates the depth of understanding Boise Rotarians have about our community and the need to conserve and preserve water for future generations.”
$1,900+ was granted to Cole Valley Christian School to fund Lego Robots. With LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education students can build robots and use software to plan, test and modify sequences of instructions from a variety of real life robotic behaviors. They gather and analyze data from sensors using data logging functionalities such as graph view. Robotics is an exciting way to bring sci-ence, technology, engineering and mathemat-
ics to a classroom.
GIVING TO THE GBRFThe GBRF is a tax-exempt organization
under Section 501(c)3. Contributions continually build the
principal of the fund. Annual distributions are based on a formula designed to assure that the principal will be preserved. A gift to the GBRF keeps giving year after year.

WHY SHOULD ROTARY CLUBS SUPPORT YOUTH EXCHANGE?
Each Year Rotary Clubs in Idaho and Ontario send between 15 to 19 Senior and just graduated students to countries in Europe, Asia and South America. In turn, those countries send students to Idaho. The students spend a full school year in their “host” countries learning about the culture, the country, the government and the people. We learn about the counties where the students are from, and the students going to other countries are ambassadors of America and Idaho.
Recently, students were asked why Rotary Clubs should get involved in the Youth Exchange program. Here are some answers.
Being a rotary youth exchange student has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for me. I have been able to promote Rotary as an organisation all over the world and hope to be part of the same organisation throughout the rest of my life. I am so grateful to Rotary and all that it has helped me accomplish. I think everyone should be able to have the opportunity to go in exchange and experience the world. Thank you Rotary, for changing my life.
—Gabriel Wistisen, from Blackfoot to Italy 2015-16
Exchange has given me the opportunity to learn in more ways than one. It’s given me a whole new outlook on the world and people. It’s given me a new appre-ciation for my host country and home
country as well as all the people in my life. I’ve learned what it’s like to truly be put out of my comfort zone and deal with any situation that is put in front of me. Throughout exchange I’ve faced the best and hardest days of my life but I wouldn’t change it for the world because of all the confidence, life skills, and understand-ing of people that it has taught me. And I’m lucky enough to thank Rotary for this amazing experience. Thank you Rotary!
—Madison Crum, from Boise to Poland 2015-16
My exchange has taught me more than I could ever imagine. I’ve learned here that the world is small and enormous all at the same time. I have learned that we are all so similar yet so different. We all have the basic foundation of humanity. But I have learned just how complex every person and every place is. There are so many different sides to every situation. I used to think that I was open-minded and that I could see the world for what it really is. But living halfway across the world has shown me the real spectrum of possibilities. This year has been the most eye-opening year of my life. I truly believe that everyone needs to go on exchange. It teaches us to be more flex-ible and learn to accept others for their differences. I believe that tolerance is key to finding peace, in the world and within ourselves, and exchange is a perfect op-portunity to learn tolerance and respon-sibility.
—Ashley Laney, from Boise to Austria 2015-16
I think that youth exchange is one of the most important opportunities offered to today’s youth. Youth exchange not only gives the students engaged in the year an incredible experience, but it also helps the families that have the opportunity to host the students. Youth exchange has brought me new siblings and new parents that honestly feel like family. You build relationships that will last a lifetime, and you truly have the chance to live a life in a year. The students also form relationships with their Rotary clubs but their host club and their spon-soring club, and in my case this relation-ship has interested me in becoming a Rotarian in the future.
—Kayla Armstrong, from Eagle to Sweden 2015-16
Clubs should continue the Rotary program because it connects kids from different countries, for life. I’m best friends with a girl who lives in Brazil.... And I have friends all through Europe! You make lasting friendships on your exchange, and lasting memories. You test yourself in the most challenging ways. By learning a second language, by connect-ing with people from a different culture, by learning to accept that culture, and by learning more about yourself as you deal with each challenge that presents itself.
—Jenna Ball, from McCall to Croatia 2015-16
Being an exchange student is an oppor-tunity that radically changes the person you are. You grow, you mature, you fall in love with the culture and the people, and you learn to how to handle unfa-vorable situations. Students who go on exchange come back with knowledge of the world and the potential to change it for the better. It’s not an easy year, but it’s 110% worth it.
—Tessa Hurley, from Boise to Spain 2015-16
Rotary Youth Exchange has been the most monumental experience of my life. My experience abroad has allowed me to travel and explore, to learn a new
language first-hand, to make global con-nections, and to appreciate how beautiful culture and diversity are. I have learned more about myself in this short amount of time than I could have ever imagined; I have discovered that I am a global citizen and that I have global responsibilities to tend to--and RYE has given me the self-confidence and motivation to get started. I have learned how to be genuinely thankful and how to be compassionate and respectful to others. All my gratitude goes to Rotary for this experience, and I hope to see this program be accessible to more and more students, as it truly is one of the most positively life-changing and impactful experiences there is--for both the individuals and for our global society.
—Taylor Sharp, from Twin Falls to France 2015-16
Exchange isn’t just a year spent abroad. It’s a year that really changes you and helps you develop as a person. I have learned so many things while being abroad. I’ve pushed myself to limits I wasn’t sure I could reach (as cheesy as that sounds). It’s hard but it’s worth it. You meet so many people who come from all over the world and have differ-ent lifestyles. I not only learn about the culture where I’m staying in but from the other exchange students cultures as well. In my 18 years of living I’ve never had a more eventful year than my exchange. I have created friendships from all over the world that will hopefully last me my whole life. I have opened my eyes up to life beyond just where I live. There is a huge world out there and nothing is bet-ter than getting out there and exploring it. Exchange makes this possible. I’m tru-ly so grateful for the time i’ve had here and these last few months I have left.
—Paris Hill, from Boise to Belgium 2015-16exchange students love the countries they visit and
the cultural experience.
