The Shanghai Summer School (BRICS Program) 2016 by Fudan University aims to provide students and young researchers from BRICS countries an opportunity to

better understand BRICS, China, Shanghai and Fudan University.

Introduction to the CurriculumThe Program provides the participants with around 95 hours of lecture, which consists of three modules: “Global Governance and Cooperation among BRICS”, “China’s Politics and Diplomacy” and “Happy in Shanghai”, and in which “Global Governance and Cooperation among BRICS” and “China’s Politics and Diplomacy” take 4 credits in total.

Candidates and TuitionCandidates: Undergraduates, graduates and

research fellows.Enrollment: 50 students in total; 20 of them

are scholarship students sponsored by the BRICS Program, and the rest are self-financing students.

Tuition and other fees:1. Details of fees: tuition fee (8000RMB),

registration fee (400RMB), insurance (160RMB), accommodation criteria listed in the following table. Self-financed events on the schedule are not included in tuition fee.

2. Accommodation: Both scholarship students and self-financing students can choose their accommodation from three types of rooms, but the allocation of rooms depends on the available rooms provided by international s t u d e n t s ’ a c c o m m o d at i o n o f f i c e . T h e accommodation fee will be charged by the international students’ accommodation office.

3. Students sponsored by the Program can waive tuition fee, registration fee, and insurance. For accommodation, the Center for BRICS Studies will subsidize 55 RMB per person per day. If he/she chooses the accommodation criteria which is higher than 55 RMB per day, he/she needs to pay the extra fee by himself/herself. Travel expenses from his/her home country to China and back, Visa fee, meals and other personal costs are not included in the scholarship, and should be paid by himself/herself.

4. Self-financing students need to pay tuition fee, registration fee, accommodation and insurance;

5. The travel around Shanghai is a self-financed event. The travel expenses are to be confirmed.

AdmissionsScholarship Students (sponsored by the Pro-gram):

1. Required materials: Curriculum Vitae (CV), Transcript of the program he/she is enrolled in, a junior researcher could send us his/her report of degree given by his/her university, Statement of purpose, a completed application form, and at least one letter of recommendation given by a professor or an associate professor.

2. The admissions of scholarship students are based on the materials they hand in and the recommendation of our partner universities.

3. The application period for sending materials and recommending students by partner universities is from March 22 to April 22, 2016.

4 The admission namelist for the scholarship students will be published on April 29, 2016 through websites of the Center for BRICS Studies and the BRICS Information Sharing & Exchanging Platform.

5. Students recommended by partner universities who are not selected as scholarship students, can contact us to be self-financing students without applying. Self-financing students:

FUDANTHE UNIVERSITY

Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded by a Chinese person, renowned modern

educator Ma Xiangbo. The school’s name was chosen from the Biography of Yuxia in the Classic of History (《尚书大传·虞夏传》), where the two characters fù 复 (“return”) and dàn 旦 (“dawn”) are found in the famous lines “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning glory after the night,” signifying continuous self-renewal, and expressing the hope that China could become a country with a strong higher education system run by Chinese intellectuals.

Fudan is home to 14,100 under-graduates and associate degree candidates, 14,800 graduates including 3000 foreign degree candidates, 2,700 staff and 3,100 full-time teaching faculty members. Fudan hosts 34 members of Chinese Academy of Science and members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 99 Chair Professors of Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 30 National Key Basic Research Program of China PIs. There are 28 schools and independent departments with 70 bachelor degree programs, 35 doctoral degree programs of Level I academic disciplines, 154 doctoral degree programs, 224 master degree programs, and 29 post-doctoral programs. There are 11 Level I national key academic disciplines and 19 Level II national key academic disciplines. Fudan hosts around 300 research institutes including 5 national key labs, 38 ministerial or provincial key labs and engineering centers, 5

“Project 985” Science and Technology Innovation Platforms and 7 “Project 985” Arts and Social Sciences Innovation Bases. Over the past hundred years, Fudan University has made outstanding contributions to the country by developing talent, innovating in science and technology, carrying forward civilization, and serving society.

CAMPUS LIFE

Handan Campus of Fudan University is divided into four areas: the main campus, as well as the north, south and east areas. The courses are presented in the Center

for BRICS Studies, which is located in the Guanghua Towers on the main campus. Your dormitories are in the north area.

Foreign Students DormitoryFudan Foreign Students Dormitory is constituted by the main building and the supplementary buildings. The Students’ cafeteria and the Gym are behind the Foreign Students Dormitory. The main building located northwest of Fudan campus is a 23-storey building with totally 728 rooms, 582 single rooms and 146 double rooms respectively. The lobby of the main building includes: reception desk, mini-supermarket, reading area, mail boxes and a 24-hour reception desk service. From the 2nd floor to the 20th floor, each floor is equipped with 2 kitchens at both ends of corridor respectively. The kitchens are equipped with: gas oven, refrigerator, washing machine, gas water heater, and automatic water boiler. All rooms in the main building are equipped with balcony, air-conditioner, private bathroom, telephone, Internet portal and cable TV access.

The supplementary building is consisted of 9 identical units. All 9 units of supplementary building have altogether 504 single rooms. Each unit is a 7-storey unit. Each floor has two apartments. Each apartment has 4 single rooms, 1 sitting room and 2 bathrooms. Each of the single rooms has balcony, air-conditioner and Internet access. There is a laundry room located in supplementary building.

Guanghua TowersGuanghua Towers are on the main campus. It takes the main teaching tasks in academic terms, and consists of four buildings: east and west main buildings, and east and west supplementary buildings. The Center for BRICS Studies is located on the 9th floor of the west main building.

CateringThere are two student canteens on the campus. One is Beiyuan

Canteen to the southeast of Foreign Students Dormitory, the other is Danyuan Canteen not far away from Guanghua Towers.

Student CardYou will receive a student card from the Center. A student card is commonly used to pay for the dishes in the student restaurant and goods in the store of the north area. It is a digital financial account that a student can see it as a debit card used in the University. The deposite in the card can be increased, in either a student canteen or the 1st floor of Guanghua Towers, by converting cash or transferring from a real debit card or credit card.

ShoppingShanghai Education Store is a small super-market near Foreign Students Dormitory. It sells foods, drinks and daily commodities but without alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. Wal-Mart, the nearest supermarket, is to the east of the University and at the cross of Zhengtong Road and Songhu Road which are two kilometers away from here. The malls

such as Shanghai The First Food, Wanda, and Bailian Youyicheng are near Wal-Mart.

HospitalsThere is a school infirmary in the southwest corner of the main campus, in which mild illness can be treated. The nearest hospital outside the University is Changhai Hospital: No.174 Changhai Rd.; Tel: 021-55786628; Website: www.chhospital.com.cn

SIGHTS & SHOPPING IN SHANGHAI

Shanghai ( 上海 ) is the largest city in China, and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the

world, with over 20 million people. Located on China's central eastern coast just at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Originally a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favorable port location and as one of the cities

opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. The City flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s. After 1990, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in intense re-development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port. Shanghai will hold the World Expo 2010, the largest event in China since the 2008 Olympics. Today, Shanghai is the largest center of commerce and finance in mainland China, and has been described as the "showpiece" of the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Sights in Shanghai• Jinmao TowerJinmao Tower is a symbol of 21st century Shanghai, at 88 stories, a super high-rise that is 420.5 meters tall, making it the second tallest building in China. Address: No.2 Pudong Century Blvd.; Website: www.jinmao88.com

• World Architecture on the BundThe Bund symbolizes Shanghai and is home to dozens of historical buildings, along the Huangpu River, that previously housed banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, and elsewhere. It

now has 52 buildings in various architectural styles - Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-classical, Beaux-Art, and Art Deco - harmonious in color and style, giving it the name "Gallery of World Architecture".

• People's SquareThe Square is situated in the Huangpu district, as a large public space and a standard reference point for measuring distances in the city. The municipal government building is on its north side. • Xintiandi (New Heaven and Earth)Xintiandi is considered one of China’s first lifestyle centers as a pedestrian shopping,

dining and entertainment area consisting of restored traditional Shikumen houses in narrow alleys, a modern shopping mall with cinema complex, and some adjoining houses turned into bookstores, cafes and restaurants, most of which provide both indoor and outdoor seating houses, as well as an art gallery.

It is 468 meters high, consisting of three main whole-scope sightseeing floors. Tourists can enjoy the dynamic city view of different height. SHOPPING IN SHANGHAI• XujiahuiXujiahui, with Xujiahui Square as the center, boasts a galaxy of well-known malls: Grand Gateway, Orient Shopping Center, Pa-cific, Shanghai Liubai, Huijin Department Store, Pacific Digital Plaza, Metro City, Sunrise Department Store and Huilian De-partment Store. The Metro Shopping Plaza is located under-ground and bustles with the flow of enthusiastic shoppers.• Nanjing Road Pedestrian WalkwayNanjing Road has been referred to as “China’s No.1 Street” and is the epitome of Shanghai history and culture. The 1,033-meter-long pedestrian walkway stretches from the Bund to People's Square and is lined with 600 shops, from some, 100 years old, to famous-brand ones, to specialty shops.
