Welcome to IWA Canalway Cavalcade, London’s best free canal event brought to you by The Inland Waterways Association, the charity that protects and restores Britain’s 6,500 miles of canals and rivers. Isn’t it great to see this beautiful setting of Browning’s Pool in Little Venice packed full with colourful decorated boats?
Volunteers from The Inland Waterways Association have been organising IWA Canalway Cavalcade for over 30 years now, and I’m sure you’ll want to join me in saying a very big “thank you” to them all. If you would like to support their efforts and show your thanks, please do make a donation to the Association in one of the IWA ‘buckets’ around the site.
The inland waterways have been described as “back door Britain”, passing effortlessly from country to town and back again. There is no better way to journey through our country than on our canals and rivers, and for nearly 70 years IWA has been working to protect and restore the waterways so that everyone today can enjoy their urban vibrancy, rural tranquility and industrial heritage.
The waterways, and especially the canals, originally provided the transport routes that made the Industrial Revolution possible. Today they provide opportunities for families and friends to spend quality time together, whether boating, fishing or walking.Wildlife abounds on the waterways even here in the centre of London, and in quieter spots you can find herons and kingfishers alongside ducks, coots, swans and moorhens.
I hope you have a wonderful day here at Cavalcade. Please find time to visit ourstand W16 in Warwick Crescent, talk to our enthusiastic team and learn more about our charity and what we do for our canals and rivers. If you love Cavalcade and the waterways, please consider making a donation, or join us and take advantage of our special show membership offer! The more members we have, the stronger we are and the more we can achieve.

The story of London’s canals is a classic tale of three parts.
First off a glorious beginning in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A time when the Grand Union Canal (known as The Grand Junction at the time) provided the transport infrastructure to bring goods from the industrial hubs of the North and Midlands to London at Brentford on the Thames. Boats would then travel in to the centre of town along the River Thames. The river route is a long way round and so the idea for a branch of the Grand Union Canal was conceived which would give access to the City via a canal arm from Bull’s Bridge in west London to Paddington and then on by cart.
Paddington’s GloryPaddington became a busy terminus with warehouses and livestock pens as well as a market. The Paddington Arm was opened in 1801 and considered a huge success. The Regent’s Canal was built to link Paddington with the Thames at Limehouse. Regent’s Canal Dock (what we now know
as Limehouse Basin) was the main centre of trade where cargo from sea-going boats was unloaded on to canal boats. By the mid 19th century the railways were taking more and more of the commercial traffic. The Second World War saw a brief revival of freight carried by canal and women were recruited to operate the boats. The women became known as the so-called ‘Idle Women’. They responded to an ad in the papers in the early 1940s and after six weeks learning to operate the boats carrying up to 50 tons of essential supplies, they found themselves working the nation’s waterways. (There is an ‘Idle Women’ boating award at this year’s festival. See page 25)
The years of declineAfter WW II the story of our canals enters its second phase - a sad, silted, derelict period. Our canals were not generally seen as a national asset but rather as a relic of a past era and in urban areas were even considered dangerous and unsightly. The newly nationalised canals were being

allowed to deteriorate and even in busy London, commercial traffic all but vanished. Two men (Tom Rolt and Robert Aickman), each with very different backgrounds and connections to the waterways, got together and created a vision for the future of the canal network. They imagined a vibrant canal network that could boost the economies of the areas the canals passed through. Rolt and Aickman were the founders of IWA, which is The Inland Waterways Association. Together they and their fellow campaigners lobbied local and national politicians as well as the general public to push for the retention and development of our waterways for commercial and leisure use.
The revival of London’s waterwaysSince IWA was born in 1946 over 500 miles of canal have been restored and the canal network has been saved, thanks to the work of countless IWA volunteers and the campaigners they work alongside.
And so now our canals are enjoying a new chapter to their story. London’s canals are as busy as they ever were but it is still not difficult to find quiet waters or peaceful places to walk, canoe or fish.
And London has a brand new waterways destination, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Waterways. Known as the Bow Back Rivers, this historic network of waterways (6km in total) was closed altogether by the 1960s but transformed in the build up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as part of a major investment and clean-up programme. IWA is leading a walk of the Olympic Park waterways on July 17th as part of the London Walks programme. See page 24 for more details.
Today IWA continues to campaign to protect and restore our canals and rivers. Our volunteers haul debris out of the waterways, lobby Government and other bodies on waterways issues, monitor planning applications to ensure there are no detrimental impacts on the waterways and support waterways restoration with both advice and practical hands-on expertise.
Please do support our work and visit IWA’s stand on Warwick Crescent. Join today for £3 for 3 months and receive a map of the waterways including IWA’s Directory of the Waterways of Great Britain. See page 18 for more details.

Canals are Alive!

For us today, enjoying the festival spectacle, it is difficult to believe that the canals of Britain were nearly lost forever. Here in Little Venice we are celebrating an asset that gives pleasure and work to millions of people every year, and is a habitat for flora and fauna across 6,500 miles of inland waterways. There are over 30,000 licensed boats on the national inland system, made up of leisure boaters and people that have made their home on the water, either with a home mooring, in a marina or as a continuous cruiser. During the summer months in particular, the population of the waterways increases as hire boats cruise the canals, moving millions of litres of water through the locks. The navigations will be shared with paddleboarders, canoeists and kayakers taking advantage of this watery asset.
But the waterways are not just about boating, as canals and rivers are home to creatures like water voles, otters, butterflies and dragonflies. With such a variety of environments covering 73 Special Sites of Scientific Interest and around 1,500 nature sites, these waterways are a green corridor linking the towns and villages of our country and allowing easy movement between them.
Birdwatchers will find moorhens, coots, mallards, reed bunting, grey herons, mute swans, Canada geese and great crested grebe, most of these being easy to spot.
Angling is one of our country’s most popular pastimes with the attraction of freshwater fish such as carp, tench, barbel, pike, roach,
perch, bream and chub being found on the end of a line.
The towpaths along the waterways provide excellent walking routes suitable for all abilities and ages. Walkers may just amble along to their nearest lock to watch the boats go by or feed the ducks (no bread!), or more dedicated ramblers might take advantage of the long distance footpaths with options like the Severn Way at 210 miles or the Jubilee Walkway at 14 miles.
The popularity of canals for human activity and nature has been made possible by campaigning organisations like The Inland Waterways Association. In the last 50 years around 500 miles of waterways have been brought back to life to create somewhere great to live near, or spend leisure time around, enhancing the quality of life of our people and our wildlife.
Watch the Pageant of Boats at 2.30pm on Saturday 30th April to see boats dressed for the ‘Canals Alive!’ theme.
Canals Alive! is the theme for this year’s IWA Canalway Cavalcade.

Stay Safe Near the Water
12
Please:• Take care walking along the towpaths,
there are more boats here than usual and there are, unavoidably, some trip hazards – watch your step!
• Keep children under control – no running!
• Do not lean out over the water.
• Do not lean against the boats – they can move unexpectedly.
• Never jump across or dive into the canal, you can never be sure of what’s below the surface.
• Dogs are welcome but must be on leads at all times (and poop-scooped after!)
• Make use of the litter disposal facilities.
• The First Aid Post is on Paddington Central, marked on the Site Plan:
in the centre of this souvenir programme.
• Please listen out for important Public Address announcements.
Water may look safe, but it can be dangerous. Learn to spot the dangers and keep away. You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water.
The dangers of water include:• It is very cold • There may be hidden currents • It can be difficult to get out (steep slimy
banks) • It is difficult to tell how deep it might be• There may be hidden rubbish, e.g.
shopping trolleys, broken glass • There are no lifeguards • It may be polluted and can make you ill
If you have any concerns please go to the nearest Information Point (there are three: on the Paddington Towpath, on the South Towpath and in Rembrandt Gardens) marked with an on the Site Plan in this programme.

Watch out for Pirates!
This year the Pirate Castle will be celebrating 50 years of activities, fun, learning and opportunities on the waterways of London. Based in Camden Town in a castle-like structure which spans the Regent’s Canal, this organisation has enabled thousands of club members and visiting groups to get hands-on canal boating experience, exploring the canal and river systems around the capital and beyond. The castle building and bank side are fully accessible, providing community halls and canoeing facilities.
Pirate Castle runs two community boats, Pirate Prince, a wide beam boat with full disabled access and a day narrow boat, Pirate Viscount.
With a fantastic team of volunteers, Pirate Castle reaches out to local communities
and support organisations to provide safe, stimulating, learning environments that help children and young adults build resilience and tackle disadvantage through participation and empowerment - regardless of their ability or personal circumstances.
To mark its first 50 years the Pirate Castle will be holding events during 2016, the highlight being ‘Source to the Sea’, a fund-raising paddle down the length of the River Thames in August, with club members kayaking from the source in Lechlade in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London, with Pirate Prince in attendance – a distance of over 150 miles. There will be an Open Weekend in June which will give visitors the opportunity to get on the water in a canoe or narrow boat.
The charity aims to raise £180,000, to cover the specialist design, materials and construction costs of a new boat which will increase capacity and create new opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get on the water. Check out the website at www.thepiratecastle.org to find out what else is going on during the summer or visit Pirate Prince at IWA Canalway Cavalcade.

2016 Programme of Towpath Walks
If IWA Canalway Cavalcade has excited your interest in London’s Canals, then you might want to explore further. The IWA Towpath Walks Society, in partnership with London Walks, brings you a regular series of guided walks along London’s Canals. The walks last just over two hours, and take place on two Sunday afternoons each month starting at a tube station or DLR station.
Bring this page with you to one of IWA’s 2016 Towpath walks and receive a £2 reduction on either the normal or concessionary rate for one attendee. We look forward to seeing you on one of our walks.

This year we are particularly grateful to British Land, who have generously supported the Boat Handling Competition, the Themed Pageant of Boats (Canals Alive!) and the Procession of Illuminated Boats.
New AwardThe Idle Women ShieldSponsored by Jan Knox, proprietor of Canal Experience Training School, the shield will be awarded for the first time this year to the best lady entrant in the Boat Handling Competition.
“Idle Women” (who were anything but “idle”) was the name given by the boatmen to the women who worked the pairs of narrowboats during wartime, when the men went to war. The name was derived from the initials IW, standing for Inland Waterways, which was on the badge the women
boaters wore to identify them. Jan Knox has been steering boats on the canal for 36 years. She can be found working on Jason’s Trip and has extensive knowledge of boat handling in Brownings Pool (the Pool where Cavalcade water-borne activities take place). She owns Canal Experience Training School (both narrowboat and widebeam) and is sponsoring “The Idle Women Shield”. Jan has also worked pairs of coalboats through several seasons and lives and works on the canal. She is looking forward to becoming a judge in the boat handling competition.
