2016 May Script Shores Hampstead United Methodist Church

“We know that in everything God works for good with those

who love Him, who are called according to His purpose”.

(Romans 8: 28)

One Sunday morning in a small Southern church, the new

pastor called on one of the older deacons to lead the opening

prayer. The deacon stood up, bowed his head and said,

“Lord, I hate buttermilk!”

The pastor opened one eye and wondered where this was

going. The deacon continued,

“Lord, I hate lard!”

Now the pastor was totally perplexed, and wondered if he

had made a mistake calling on that particular individual. The dea-

con went on,

“Lord, I ain’t TOO crazy about plain flour, either! But after you mix

‘em all together and bake ‘em in a hot oven, I just love buttermilk

biscuits!”

Aside from the moisture in the pastor’s mouth, he was

totally at a loss, and wondering if this would be the shortest

appointment any pastor had ever experienced. Then the deacon

concluded his prayer,

“Lord, help us to realize that when life gets hard, when things

come up that we don’t like, whenever we don’t understand what

You are doing, we need to wait and see what You are making.

After You get through mixing and baking, it’ll probably turn out to

be something a whole lot better than biscuits!”

And the whole congregation, pastor included, shouted

“AMEN!”

(Being that this is about food, you’re probably assuming it’s

original. It’s not. My thanks to Ric Andrews of Andrews Mortuary!)

I confess, I’ve never really liked this passage of scripture - I’ve

heard too many pastors dump these words out when people are

having hard times -- like somehow, their hearing will magically

take away all the pain, all the confusion, all the disappointment

that life sometimes brings.

As I said, I’ve never really liked this passage -- until now! It

doesn’t take away all the bad-- it’s just a reminder to us that God

takes all the events of our lives and molds them into the people

that we become. Betsy and I have had a number of painfully

disillusioning events in our lives – but, in looking back, almost all of

them have directly attributed to our appreciation for things today. Having our first son in the Republic

of Turkey was a difficult challenge, but having been through that has given us a greater appreciation

for the magnificence of living in America, and for sharing our blessings with others. I’m sure you can

find similar experiences in your life, too!

Just keep reminding yourself- God has so many good things coming, things that we cannot

yet see -- give Him time to mix, roll, cut, and bake! (Knowing God, He’s probably got butter and

jelly, too!)

Hey Everyone!

Now that it's getting warmer, people are getting into the spring

cleaning mode; please consider donating to our 2016 Fall Festival Yard Sale.

We accept most items with a few exceptions: clothes, shoes, workout

equipment, tube tvs or computer monitors.

Our yard sale is always a success thanks to your donations. Please let your friends, neighbors,

and homeowners’ associations know as well. Please contact me at [email protected] with

yard sale in the subject area. We are in the process of working out donation times, but will update

as soon as possible.

Lovely Ladies Luncheon

On Thursday, May 26th we will be going to Bluewater Grill at Wrightsville Beach. We will meet at the res-

taurant at 12:00 PM, or meet at the church at 11:15 AM to carpool. If you would like to attend, please call

Glen Pettygrove at 270-3964 or Sharolyn Schwiesow at 270-3268.

Praise Band Singer Needed!

Michaela Kerrigan has been a vocalist with the band for 4 years.

Soon she will graduate and be off to college.

Therefore, we are looking for female vocalists to try out and

hopefully join the band. We practice Tuesdays at 5:30 pm. We realize

that people have things that come up. All we ask is that you make a consistent effort to

make practice.

In addition, we are still looking for a keyboard player. Let me know if you are

interested in vocals and/or keyboard!

BackPack Meals ~ MUNCH

This month we are going to try a different approach for food donations. Rather

than list the items we need most, we will try one single item – CEREAL! Cereal is one

of our staples that we like to send home almost every weekend. The cereal advantages

are many but to list a few: can be eaten with or without milk, has plenty of servings per container,

also has decent nutritional values.

Cereal is expensive. However, we have found that Dollar Tree and several of the local food

chains have “off brand” cereals each for $1 or less! Coupons and weekly sales specials often make

name brands attractive in price, too!

Please consider picking up a couple of boxes of cereal each week to help with our food

distribution. Ninety-six backpacks each weekend need a lot of cereal!

Again, thanks for your generous support of MUNCH!

—Chip Davis, HUMC MUNCH BackPack Program Coordinator

Disaster Response Team

As the NC Conference’s effort to respond to the housing needs of the people impacted by Hurricane Irene and the Chocowinity/Washington tornadoes nears a close, we can look back at what we accomplished over four and a half years. We repaired or rebuilt 738 homes. Fifteen of these were rebuilt from the ground up. Forty-four conferences of the UMC participated along with scores of teams from other denominations and nonfaith based organizations. We started this ministry with $75,000 and will end this portion of the effort with a little over $186,000. This was done with the support of UMCOR through two 3 million dollar grants and close to another 3 million dollars in donations from across the nation and around the world. God does provide for what pleases Him.

As exciting as the above is, what comes next is even more exciting. Rather than closing down this ministry along with the properties we have acquired and waiting for the next big storm, we will keep it alive in a new ministry. One of the properties donated to us is a Boy Scout Camp near Washington that needed major repair. We took it over, repaired it, and used it to house the teams working in the area. We will use this camp for training ERT and Rebuilding Teams. We will continue working on homes that were initially turned down for assistance and open up a new ministry, like WARM, that will assist in non-disaster related repairs. The possibilities are unlimited and are under God’s control.

I will keep you up to speed on our progress with this new ministry. There is one other unrelated thing that will be coming up very shortly and that is the new UMCOR Connecting Neighbors incentive. It is made up of three phases. The first involves preparing the physical church property for a storm, including helping the pastor and staff. The second involves preparing the congregation. The third involves preparing the community. There is a one-day training class that covers these three phases and points out common sense means to accomplish them. —Walt Makaryk

Preschool News This month’s curriculum is all about Things that Go. Making

Good Choices is our character education topic, and The Right Path is

our devotion.

As the 2015-2016 school year is coming to a close, we are

ready to celebrate the success of an excellent year. For all of our

children, every day spent at preschool is something worth celebrating. The learning that

takes place, the accomplishments achieved, from simple tasks to solving complicated

problems, every step of the way through preschool is part of the learning process. All of our

children have grown and learned so much this year. We have watched our pre-k children

become more confident in their abilities, and they will walk away from us ready to excel in

kindergarten. We are so blessed to have been a part of their educational foundation.

They will always be a part of our preschool family.

Our End of Year Celebration is on Thursday, May 26 at 10:00 am. Each of our classes

will perform and our Pre-K class will “graduate.” A picnic will follow on the front lawn.

Thanks again church family and friends for your continued support. Thank you

trustees for working to keep our grounds safe and clean and thanks to the men’s club for

raking our playground. Thanks to all who helped with the fall and spring clean-up days.

Thanks to everyone who made contributions to the scholarship fund. Your generosity

helped children attend our school and enabled their families to experience the love of a

caring church. Thanks to a loving and dedicated staff, our program is the longest

continually running mission at HUMC. We believe in what we do and know we have been

called according to God’s purpose to love and care for His children.

We will be back June 7 for seven weeks of summer camp program.

Happy May! Have a great summer!

Peace and prayers,

Judy Lane

Upward Soccer

Our last game of the season was held on April 30 and what a season it was! God

blessed us this year with perfect weather all the way to the end, without a single

rainout. On May 7 we will be having a Parents/players vs. the Coaches/Refs

game at 10:00am. This should be quite entertaining for all watching! Hot dogs

and hamburgers will be on sale for lunch and a bouncy house with slide will be on campus for the

children who will not be playing, for their amusement. The end of the season awards will be given

out to all players at the start of the game. This should be a wonderful day of food, fun, and

fellowship and all are invited to attend! Thanks to all who participated, prayed, and supported

Upward Soccer. There are so many people whose lives have been touched in the community by this

ministry! —Melody Doyle

Power Kids We will be wrapping up Power Kids this month by celebrating the Moms and Dads at an

appreciation dinner on May 11. The dinner will be Italian style with the Power Kids helping and

serving the dinner at 6:00 PM. There will be a moving up ceremony for all of the fifth graders

ending with a tour of the Youth Building. This year we will have 10 Power Kids moving up into the

youth. The largest crowd we have ever had! If you have not RSVP’d yet, please do so with the

number of the family members that will be attending. Our final evening of Power will be May 18

at Jungle Rapids. Let me know if there are any drivers out there that can help transport the

children.

Youth Ministries The youth have been so busy last month and have done a phenomenal job with Youth Sunday and the Talent Show. They worked hard, and it showed at both of these events. When you see a youth, let them know how much they are appreciated. They would love to hear that! Our youth meetings will be finishing this month on May 26. We will be meeting at the Gibson’s home for our final gathering. More information will be forthcoming. Graduation is almost upon us, and we need to know who all will be joining us for Gradua-tion Recognition Sunday on June 5 at the 11:00am service. We will also have a video at this service with all of the graduates’ pictures from when they were younger to present day. All pictures need to be turned into the office or e-mailed to Melody Doyle at [email protected] by May 26.

THE MONTH OF MAY, IN MUSIC:

Just inserted on my calendar today, Duke Ladd will be accompanying

me on 2 songs over at the Gazebo (or here at church if it’s raining!) as our

community gathers for National Day of Prayer, on Thursday, May 5th at noon. Come on out if you’re

nearby!

Our Handbellers will be ringing on Mother’s Day, May 8th! Due to scheduling, it will

probably be our last day to play this season, so I hope you can make it to church that day, as we

have a truly lovely Anthem piece, called “Prayer.” Also, we will be looking for an additional

handbell player for next season, so if you, or someone you know, has handbell experience, and

would like to get back in the swing of things, PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me! Thank you for

that!

Our “Pentecost Choir” will be singing at our ONE SERVICE ONLY AT 10AM, MAY 15th! (Don’t

tell anyone, but they have an uncanny resemblance to our “Easter Choir!”)

Our Praise Team and Choir are putting together some great anthems for May! We hope you

will be inspired by our music…or at the very least, enjoy the listening!

On a personal note: Thank you for all your prayers, cards and kind words at the passing of

my dad. At age 93, he may not have gotten to pick up the dog on his way, but he has definitely

“gone home,” where he awaits the arrival of the love of his life, my mom; married for 70+ years,

and sweethearts for 82! Now THERE’S a love story! See you in church!

Yours in Song, Patti

Greetings from Queenie the Church Mouse!

Greetings to all the lovely people of Hampstead UMC.

Yippee!! Spring is in the air, and the days are getting warmer. It is a time of getting

outside, enjoying the fresh air, unless like my sister Mabel you suffer from allergies!

In which case, you find just the right root extract to chew on that takes away the

sneezing, wheezing, and coughing symptoms. I recall Grandma searching the fields for this extract

to relieve sissy’s symptoms. She would not allow anyone else to go with her as this was her thing,

and not even Grandpa knew the name or where to find the plant. Anyway, not to go on-and-on

about the cure, but let me just say that Mabel is running around outside without as much as an

Ah-choo! God Bless Grandma and her gift of healing; but, I always worried that this gift would not

be passed on. Strangely enough, I recently heard that Grandma plans on training Mabel, the one

with the allergies, in the art of medicine as she recognizes this gift lies within Mabel to continue. Is

this not uncanny! I mean truly the one suffering from the allergy possesses the spiritual gift of

healing!

Spiritual gifts are something that we all have. You may not recognize your gift until someone

sees it in you and brings it up in conversation. I have always been told that I have the gift of

gab…but, I have also been told that this is not a true gift and sometimes it’s a nuisance! As I serve

the Lord and pray for guidance, my gifts of mercy, discernment, faith, and exhortation (probably

where I get the gift of gab) become evident to me and to others close to me. The Lord reminds us

through scripture of the need for spiritual gifts and to put our gifts into service for the Lord. It does

not matter if our bodies are pint-size like mine, 6 feet tall, or we are 15 or 90. Our gifts are needed

by the Lord and his people. I am reminded by Grandpa to tone down my gabbing as I concentrate

on listening before speaking. He reminds me that the gift of exhortation is improved by being a

keen listener before speaking. I’m working on it and read…

“There are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same

Lord.” (1 Cor. 12:4-5)

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's

grace in its various forms.” (1 Pet. 4:10)

“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same

function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have

different gifts, according to the grace given us.” (Romans 12:4-6a)

So, my awesome friends, this message is all about finding your gifts and putting them to work for

the Lord here at HUMC. If you have a gift of teaching then get thee to Sunday School….if you have

the gift of mercy and discernment, visit a shut-in. If you have the gift of music, let Patti know! Go

see Melody if you have the gift of working with the children and youth. There’s a place for each of

our gifts.

Wow! All of what I have said started with a simple Ah-Choo from sister Mabel as we

celebrate spring being in the air. I would also like to think that the Lord has a reason for this

message as we all need to be reminded of our spiritual gifts. So thanks for listening!!

Until next time, I remain your loyal church mouse,

Queenie

Thank You! The ASP team would like to thank all those who

participated in the Spaghetti Dinner and Youth Talent Show event. It was a

very successful fundraiser thanks to your donations and the wonderful talents of our youth.

The Blueberries are coming! Look for the announcement of the Blueberry Patch opening

schedule in late May. The timing of course is dependent on the berries ripening

schedule which may be delayed due to the unusual Spring weather. Recent

inspection of the patch indicates we are in store for a bountiful crop this year.

The Blueberry Patch proceeds help fund the ASP mission. This year our team

of 40 youth and adult volunteers will be serving those in need of home repairs

in Rutherford County, NC July 10-16. If you would like to assist with the vending of blueberries

please contact John Harris, ASP Coordinator by email [email protected] or phone 270-4780.

Did someone step on your toes?

On Sunday, April 17th in his message Rev. Skip issued a challenge.

We can make all the kits, pack all the food buckets, keep giving and

giving of our stuff, but until we are ready to step out of our comfort

zone and share the message of Jesus Christ with the hungry, homeless,

and forgotten of this world we are not in the true service issued to us

by God.

Ouch, my toes hurt BUT I pray that in the future I can become more

Christ-like in my service, How about you?

Thank you for your monetary donations and your time for the students of Topsail Elementary school on April

22nd we are blessed. YOU did let those children know that you care for them as well as their mission to feed

other children across the globe.

We are collecting school and health kits to send to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) . They

may be placed in room #2 across from the restrooms. Deadline is Sunday, May 29th.

Leap of Faith

The Leap of Faith (LOF) Committee is continuing to serve our community with the food pantry. As everyone knows, times have been difficult for many, and we continually appreciate food and/or monetary contributions. Food items may be placed in the green Leap of Faith bin in the Narthex. Have you noticed our outdoor cabinet? A BIG THANK YOU goes to Chip Davis for installing the shingles on our cabinet! We have the finest cabinet in Hampstead! We are proud to announce the winner and champion of the 2nd Annual Leap of Faith ACC/UNCW, ECU & SEC Challenge Canned Food Drive. The winner is UNCW with a grand total of 215 food items. Thanks to your wonderful support throughout our “friendly” competition, Leap of Faith can continue to serve the needy in the Hampstead community. God bless each of you! We have had several individual donors of food. We are so grateful to all of those in the Hampstead community who have donated food items so generously to Leap of Faith. Please contact John and Paulette Biles (910-274-1358) if you are interested in being on the LOF Committee. At present, we have twelve volunteers on the committee. Each volunteer is assigned a week (Sunday thru Saturday) on a rotating schedule. The time of day/evening that the volunteer distributes the food to the outdoor pantry is decided by the volunteer. What an easy and rewarding mission! Are any of you interested in joining this wonderful mission? In His Name, John & Paulette Biles, Chair, The Leap of Faith Committee

Stephen Ministry

Over the next few months we would like to address various questions

concerning Stephen Ministry within our church: who benefits from SM, how does

SM fit the mission of our congregation, how are SM chosen to serve, and does

SM help the Pastor?

We’ll start with how Stephen Ministry helps the Pastor. Pastors have a

long list of people that need care and often don’t have enough hours in the day to

assist with each member that needs attention. By having a team of SM who can provide care and

encouragement on an ongoing basis allows him/her to have the confidence no one within the

congregation is being “ignored.”

Sometimes we think the pastor needs to do all the work—he is the one-person band, and the

horse that pulls the cart. But the New Testament talks about everyone has a responsibility to love and

care for one another and help each other through difficult times. Stephen Ministry empowers a church

to do just that. It gives congregations a way to equip all to be ministers of Christ.

Good news….SM now has a “bulletin” board to display what is happening with the SM

program within our congregation. It is located across from room nine in the hallway. Take a few

minutes to check it out!

Blessings for a beautiful month of May,

Lydia France and Vicki Crane

2016 May Script Shores Page 10

Prayer Beads, with a United Methodist logo, really…..seriously!! This month we are going to learn about

prayer beads for Protestants, and yes it is ok if you want to use them.

The use of prayer beads is actually Biblically based. As we read in Numbers Ch. 15 we find the Israelites were not obeying God while they were in the wilderness, nor does it seem they were doing much in the

way of praying. God had to spell out the rules for intentional sins and unintentional sins, then God said, 15:37 The Lord spoke to Moses: 15:38 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them to make45 tassels46 for them-

selves on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and put a blue thread47 on the tassel of the corners. 15:39 You must have this tassel so that you may look at it and remember all the command-

ments of the Lord and obey them and so that you do not follow48 after your own heart and your own eyes

that lead you to unfaithfulness.49 15:40 Thus50 you will remember and obey all my commandments and be holy to your God. 15:41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I

am the Lord your God.” God knows that in our physical realm we’re in need of physical support. Think of the fringe or beads as a prayer tool. Some may not want or need beads but for others it may help them con-

centrate better. It may help some focus on their relationship with God more deeply. Forgot to pray today? The beads on the table might be a reminder. Don’t know what to pray?

Sometimes just holding a bible or beads may help us feel more connected, that God is close. The fringe was a gift from God to make the Israelites feel

more connected to Him in good times, bad times, and everything in between.

That’s what prayer beads are, a gift.

Vacation Bible School

The Pumpkin Patch will have a planning meeting on May 24, at 6:30 PM. There are

many different facets to the Pumpkin Patch, and we would like to see more people in

key positions. Our profits last year were the biggest yet, and we have so many ideas as

to how to make this year even better, but we need help. Please prayerfully consider being a part of this

huge fundraiser that all in the community of Hampstead look forward to!

Vacation Bible School will be here before you know it and this year’s

theme will be “Cave Quest.” VBS will be held on July 25 – July 29

and we are in need of many Station Leaders as well as crew leaders,

and a Preschool Director to make this event successful. Decorations,

props and supply requests will be listed in the narthex. If you can
