Mobility (2015 – ongoing)KLCSI is working with Public BikeShare to introduce a BikeShare scheme in the island of Labuan off the coast of Sabah. As part of a wider low-carbon plan for the island, KLCSI and Public BikeShare will be using the BikeShare model to promote cycling in Labuan. Labuan’s development plan emphasises the ambitions for tourism growth and the need to reduce urban traffic so the BikeShare scheme is well-suited to the island’s aspirations. KLCSI will be testing a six-month pilot with 10 bikes before scaling upwards.Waste (2015 – ongoing)KLCSI is working on the design and establishment of an innovative food waste recycling scheme in a low-income public housing complex. The food waste will be collected from individual owners’ apartments, processed into compost on-site and used to nurture an urban farm for the residents. The waste recycling scheme is innovative in that it eliminates transportation costs, which is usually the largest component of operating costs for this type of business. This scheme can be easily replicated across other communities in urban areas across Malaysia.Ageing populations (2015 – ongoing)KLCSI is involved in the design and development of an innovative community centre in Kuala Lumpur that will cater to the needs of the immediate local community - the elderly, adults, youths and children. The centre’s facilities and programs will cover health, social, recreational and educational purposes. The community centre is a model for intergenerational care that can be easily replicated across other communities in urban areas across Malaysia. This centre will be designed specifically with the local community in mind, after a careful study of the demographics and lifestyle patterns in the area and identifying any gaps or needs that are not being fulfilled from the perspectives of a wider community. The centre will also be a showcase for sustainable living that the community members can adapt and apply in their own homes such as urban gardening, waste recycling and energy efficiency.Social Innovation (2015 – ongoing)KLCSI is part of the Social Progress Network Malaysia initiative, a collaborative

action network with members from government, business, academia and civil society, with the mission to see social progress sit alongside economic prosperity as a measure of a country’s development. The goal is to effect social wellbeing in Malaysia through partnerships between various sectors and investments in social innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. KLCSI is currently working with network members to map social innovation projects and initiatives taking place across five cities in Malaysia.Workshops (2015 – ongoing)Work life balance – as part of the ASEAN Challenge, KLCSI ran a workshop on work life balance to collect the views of young ASEAN professionals on their likes and dislikes about living in urban cities.CSR for Sustainable Outcomes – KLCSI ran a workshop involving corporate managers to identify the types of outcomes sought based on investment in CSR programmes. How to build better relationships with NGO partners was also discussed in the proceedings.Building resilience – KLCSI assisted AECOM in running disaster resilience workshops to manage disaster risk in three cities in Southeast Asia. A scorecard tool was used to measure the performance of various agencies.Low Carbon City – KLCSI ran a workshop with Putrajaya Corporation’s LA21 team to identify low carbon measures for the city as well as capacity building measures to support the latter.

Pre-KLCSI Projects I have written sustainability reports (following GRI guidelines) for a number of companies including AECOM’s for the last 5 years. As corporate sustainability director for AECOM, I oversaw a reduction of 5% yoy impacts from AECOM operations which included electricity, paper, water and air travel.Other highlights include: Global Best Practices in Sustainable Urban Development– I co-authored a

book on an in-depth review of 55 cities worldwide and their best practices in sustainability.

Climate risk assessment exercise for coal-fired power plants in China, India and Australia looking at scenarios which would affect the stations and fuel supply chains.

Use of AECOM’s proprietary software tool SSIMTM to develop the Master Sustainability Program for one of Singapore’s flagship development. The tool was used to identify carbon reduction and offset strategies.

Workshops in London and Jakarta Business for Environment (B4E) Climate Summit with corporate stakeholders on GHG reduction strategies in the transport sector.
