Englands DrinkEnglands most popular drink is tea. But people in England

started drinking tea thousands of years later than people in China. How did a drink from China become so popular in England?

People in China started drinking tea about 5,000 years ago. Teawas first brought to Europe by some Portuguese* people around1560. After that, Dutch* people started bringing tea to Europe, too.In 1662, the King of England married a woman who came fromPortugal. The new queen loved to drink tea. She started drinkingtea in London, so many rich people began to drink it, too. In1700, more than 500 coffee shops in London sold tea.

By 1750, tea was the most popular drink in England. Therewas a big British company called the East India Company. Thecompany brought tea from China to England. It was the onlycompany that could sell tea in England. Because of this, tea wasvery expensive. Only rich people could drink it. Rich women hadspecial parties to drink it with their friends. But everyone elsewanted to drink tea, too. They started buying it secretly* fromother places. Then, tea prices became cheaper, and everyone washappy.

People in England like drinking tea with breakfast. Thanks toAnna Russell, a friend of the queen, afternoon tea is also popular.Around 1840, she thought of an idea. English people had latedinners. She was always hungry during the day, so she startedhaving tea and snacks in the afternoon. Now, afternoon tea is afamous English tradition.
