PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION TheEMDF59PHIisahighspeedlocomotiveproducedbyElectro-MotiveDivision(EMD)from1994to2001.Itfeaturesanisolatedcab,lightweightbody,andastreamlinedshape,featuresthatwereabsentontheoriginalcommuterF59PH.

FirstbuiltfortheCaliforniaDepartmentofTransportation(CDoT),theF59PHIhasseenserviceinallfourcornersofAmerica,(MostlyseeninCalifornia)aswellasinthePacificNorthwest/MontrealareainCanada.

In1990,theStateofCaliforniapassedabillthatwouldresultinmassivefundingforthestatetransportationsystems.Italsoresultedinaseparate,statefundedsystemofregionalAmtrakroutes.

CDoTwantedalocomotivethatwasbothreliableandattractive.TheyapproachedEMD,whorespondedwiththelightweight,high-speedF59PHIlocomotive.

Soonafter,moreordersarrived.Amtrakordered21oftheselocomotivesfortheirPacificSuflinerservice(separatefromAmtrakCalifornia),andtheNorthCarolinaDepartmentofTransportationalsoselecteditastheirprimarymotivepower.WestCoastExpress(operatedbyTransLink)inMetroVancouver,alsoselecteditforstartingupitsservice.

Montreal’sAgencedeMetropolitainedeTransportbought11oftheselocomotiestogowiththeirBombardierBi-Levelcoaches,whichwerejustarriving.

TheF59PHIwasproduceduntil2001.ItwastakenoffofEMD’slineupbecauseitwasn’tabletomeettheEPATier1regulations.

SomeofAmtrakCalifornia’sF59PHI’shavebeenrebuiltbyEMD,theseareECOrepowers.

SoundTransit’s2015budgetoutlinesplanstooverhaulsevenF59’sandfourofthosewillbeoverhauledtoTier3standards.
