The worldwide leading text on allergy and immunology
DESCRIPTION
Through eight outstanding editions, Middleton’s Allergy: Principles and Practice has been the reference of choice for both clinicians and researchers as both a practical reference and an effective self-assessment tool for board preparation. The 9th Edition continues the tradition of excellence with comprehensive coverage of all basic science and clinical applications regarding allergy practice and disease mechanisms. It brings you fully up to date with recent innovations in the diagnosis, prevention, and management of allergic disorders, including emerging global issues, the advent of precision medicine, and new immunologic therapies.
ASSESS
Since its inception, this two-volume book has served as a comprehensive resource for allergists, specifically fellows-in-training. Other medical providers will benefit from using this book as a reference for clinical information on allergic diseases. The present edition continues the reputation of the original, enjoying contributions from over 200 experts in the field. Although this is a must-have reference book, due to the detailed presentation of the topics and the size of the book, it is not practical for day-to-day use in medical practice.

Gray's Surgical Anatomy Edited by : Peter Brennan; Susan Standring and Sam Wiseman
The new gold standard in surgical anatomy
DESCRIPTION
Written and edited by expert surgeons in collaboration with a world-renowned anatomist, this exquisitely illustrated reference consolidates surgical, anatomical and technical knowledge for the entire human body in a single volume. Part of the highly respected Gray’s ‘family,’ this new resource brings to life the applied anatomical knowledge that is critically important in the operating room, with a high level of detail to ensure safe and effective surgical practice. Gray’s Surgical Anatomy is unique in the field: effectively a textbook of regional anatomy, a dissection manual, and an atlas of operative procedures – making it an invaluable resource for surgeons and surgical trainees at all levels of experience, as well as students, radiologists, and anatomists.
ASSESS
This book is well done and I will recommend it highly to my colleagues. It is well written without being overly wordy and has high quality images and good clinical correlations.

Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards, 5e Hansen John
Learn, review, and self-test – anytime, anywhere
A Volume in the Netter Basic Science Series
KEY FEATURES
• Pre-punched holes make it easy to carry selected groups of cards with you.
• A perfect study aid and complement to Netter’s Clinical Anatomy, 4rd Edition concise textbook and Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy, 7th Edition.
DESCRIPTION
Learn the essential anatomy you need to know – quickly and easily! Each flash card in this full-color deck features high-quality Netter art (and several new paintings by Dr. Carlos Machado), numbered labels (with hidden answers), and concise comments and clinical notes for the most commonly tested anatomy terms and concepts. Focusing on clinically relevant anatomy, this easy-to-use, portable study tool helps you learn anatomical structures with confidence!
ASSESS
These flashcards are a useful and valued learning tool by many students. They would be less useful in courses that deviate from the amount of anatomy that used to be covered in most courses, frustrating students as the cards/website cannot be customized as a learning tool specific to their course. This is becoming an expectation of many professional students.

Netter's Clinical Anatomy, 4e Hansen John
More concise. More visual. More clinical.
A Volume in the Netter Basic Science Series
KEY FEATURES
• Clinical Focus boxes present hundreds of illustrated clinical correlations that bridge anatomy to pathophysiology. Every clinical correlation – more than 200 in all – is illustrated.
• Features and Characteristics boxes explain the relation between structure and function.
• Muscle/Ligament/Joint tables summarize attachment points, actions, and other key information related to each structure.
• Both USMLE-style review questions and short answer questions online help you gauge your mastery of the material and identify areas where you may need further study.
• Portable book size makes it easy to carry on the go.
DESCRIPTION
Focus on the clinically relevant aspects of anatomy and bridge normal anatomy to common clinical conditions with Netter's Clinical Anatomy, 4th Edition. This easy-to-read, visually stunning text features nearly 600 superb Netter-style illustrations that provide essential descriptions of anatomy, embryology, and pathology to help you understand their clinical relevance. Authored by John Hansen, PhD, an Honored Member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, this book is an ideal anatomy reference for students who want to make the most of their study time or need a concise review of clinical anatomy.
ASSESS
This is an excellent book for those who learn gross anatomy, embryology, and some clinical cases better using the Netter artwork. My issue with this approach is that a human built according to the Netter artwork would not be anything resembling what a human looks like in real life. However, the Netter artwork emphasizes relevant anatomy, embryology, and parts in clinical cases. The book is definitely useful for its intended audience. The other books in this field are basically on the same level and aimed at the same audience, including Moore's Essential Clinical Anatomy, 6th edition, Agur (Wolters Kluwer, 2020), Gray's Anatomy for Students, 4th edition, Drake et al. (Elsevier, 2020), and Snell's Clinical Anatomy by Regions, 10th edition, Snell (Wolters Kluwer, 2019). This update is justified, with the 215 clinical focus boxes, a reorganization, the introduction that includes a discussion of the body's organ systems, clinical application multiple choice questions at the end of chapters, and some embryology material.

I am fond of the execution of this method of teaching. The new deck does not contain that many new photographs and, in several instances, the colors in the second edition are better. However, the treatment recommendations have changed for many of the diseases and there are now new topical corticosteroids that required an update in the potency ranking chart.

MSc, Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Social Care, Sheffield

• Gives a truly global overview with contributions from over 100 international leading experts in the field and across a range of geographical, political and linguistic contexts
• Demonstrates how occupational injustices are shaped through political, economic and historical factors
• Advocates participatory approaches which work for those who experience inequalities
DESCRIPTION
The new edition of this landmark international work builds on the previous two volumes, offering a window onto occupational therapy practice, theory and ideas in different cultures and geographies. It emphasizes the importance of critically deconstructing and engaging with the broader context of occupation, particularly around how occupational injustices are shaped through political, economic and historical factors.
Centering on the wider social and political aspects of occupation and occupation-based practices, this textbook aims to inspire occupational therapy students and practitioners to include transformational elements into their practice. It also illustrates how occupational therapists from all over the world can affect positive changes by engaging with political and historical contexts.
Divided into six sections, the new edition begins by analyzing the key concepts outlined throughout, along with an overview on the importance and practicalities of monitoring and evaluation in community projects. Section Two explores occupation and justice emphasizing that issues of occupational injustice are present everywhere, in different forms: from clinical settings to community-based rehabilitation. Section Three covers the enactment of different Occupational Therapies with a focus on the multiplicity of occupational therapy from the intimately personal to the broadly political. Section Four engages with the broader context of occupational therapy from the political to the financial. The chapters in this section highlight the recent financial crisis and the impact it has had on people’s everyday life. Section Five collects a range of different approaches to working to enable a notion of occupational justice. Featuring chapters from across the globe, Section Six concludes by highlighting the importance and diversity of educational practices.

KEY FEATURES
• Links theory with day-to-day practice, stimulating reflection
• Includes occupational, biomedical and social sciences that underpin occupational therapy practice

• Use of person-centred or inclusive and strengths-based language
• Three bonus interactive practice stories online at Evolve Resources and signposted at the end of Sections 3-7 in the textbook
DESCRIPTION
Formerly entitled Occupational Therapy and Physical Dysfunction this seminal textbook builds on the strengths of all previous editions and continues to explore the work of occupational therapists with people who are experiencing illness, injury or impairment. It links theory with day-to-day practice, stimulating reflection on the knowledge, expertise and attitudes that inform practice, and encouraging the development of occupation-focused practice.
The new title, Occupational Therapy for People Experiencing Illness, Injury or Impairment, reflects the knowledge, attitudes and skills that underpin the practice of promoting occupation and participation. It showcases how occupational therapists work with people – not medical conditions and diagnoses – as individuals, groups, communities, and populations.
The new edition now has additional chapters on the assessment and intervention stages of the professional reasoning process to assist development of enabling skills and strategies. It also includes many more practice stories throughout to provide authentic examples to illustrate the application of theory to practice. Learning is further reinforced via access to a new online resource – Evolve Resources – which includes MCQs, reflective questions and three bonus interactive practice stories with accompanying reflective videos. These are all signposted within the textbook.
Now compromising seven sections, which follow the professional reasoning format of the Canadian Practice Process Framework (CPPF), the new edition first tracks the evolution of occupational therapy in the context of health care. It then examines the foundational biomedical and social sciences, in addition to occupational science, before going on to the areas of assessment; writing occupation-focused goals; enabling skills and strategies which include advocacy and lobbying, public health, and community-based rehabilitation. The book ends with a chapter on developing effective reflection skills to enable occupational therapists to critically evaluate their practice, evolve as practitioners, and maintain and develop their professional competencies.

A Volume in the Physiotherapy Essentials Series
DESCRIPTION
Since its first publication in 1989, Anatomy and Human Movement has grown to become a best-selling seminal textbook, helping students to understand and remember the mechanisms which allow movement to take place.
Written specifically for physiotherapists and occupational therapists, this textbook is the ideal resource for students learning how to perform a musculoskeletal examination and for practising clinicians who need to refresh their functional anatomy.
The approach used is the same as in the previous edition, which shows the physiotherapist’s perspective during patient examinations through an intact skin: bones are presented first, followed by accurate descriptions of muscles, joints, nervous system and blood supply.
New to this edition, the introduction of an e-learning course as a helpful study aid and an ideal complement to the text.

• Clinical reasoning as an increasingly team-based practice, including shared decision making with clients
• The need for sound strategies and tools to facilitate the expanding collaborations in health care across disciplines and with clients and carers
• Advanced education approaches promoting expansion and enhancement of reasoning strategies
• The importance of building good practices for learning clinical reasoning into curricula and into students’ own practice development approaches
• Strengthening links between orthodox and complementary medicine reasoning practices

Outstanding visual coverage of this fast-changing, complex field
DESCRIPTION
Newly organized and featuring new editors and hundreds of new images, Peters’ Atlas of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology, Seventh Edition, brings you up to date with today’s greatest challenges in tropical medicine. Increased global travel, climate change, human conflict, short-term/large-scale human assemblies, potent therapeutic agents, drug resistance, and vaccine misinformation have contributed to a greatly changed landscape in this complex field. This practical, highly visual guide provides more than 1,300 stunning illustrations, making it an authoritative parasitology resource for accurate diagnosis of complex diseases.
ASSESS
Visual learners who are studying or reviewing diagnosis in tropical medicine may consider this book, whose update from 2007 is easily justified. Photographs of skin lesions and other physical findings, as well as photomicrographs, photos of gross specimens, and illustrations of laboratory tests assist in diagnosis. However, readers pursuing laboratory diagnosis will find more depth in laboratory-focused books like Manual of Clinical Microbiology, 11th edition, Jorgensen et al. (American Society for Microbiology Press, 2015). Hunter's Tropical Medicine and Emerging Infectious Diseases, 10th edition, Ryan et al. (Elsevier, 2020) is another alternative with many illustrations but more extensive discussion of treatment. Manson's Tropical Diseases, 23rd edition, Farrar et al. (Elsevier, 2014) offers less emphasis on illustrations but more detailed disease descriptions. Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine, 4th edition, Davidson et al. (Oxford University Press, 2014) is a practice-oriented guide to tropical medicine with 14 pages of color illustrations. Control of Communicable Diseases Manual, 20th edition, Heymann (American Public Health Association, 2015) includes many tropical diseases in structured, concise articles, albeit without illustrations. The online Public Health Image Library of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention presents many clinical images, however, without the extensive annotations of this book. Finally, Google has the advantage of retrieving a series of images, which enables viewers to see a range of appearances of one condition.

It really is extremely difficult to make a useful comparison among <B><I>DeVita, Hellman, and Rosenberg's Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology</I></B>, 11th edition, DeVita et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2019), <B><I>Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine</I></B>, 9th edition, Bast et al. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2017) and <B><I>Abeloff's Clinical Oncology</I></B>. They all provide authoritative information, and it is noteworthy that DeVita and Cancer Medicine also provide interim updates which do not appear to be a feature of this book. All of these books belong in all medical libraries, and individual readers should explore each one and decide which is best suited to their personal needs. As they are all authoritative overviews, price should also be a consideration.

Diagnostic Pathology: Soft Tissue Tumors, 3e Lindberg Matthew
Stay up to date with recent changes in soft tissue pathology
DESCRIPTION
Covering all aspects of soft tissue pathology, this highly regarded volume in the Diagnostic Pathology series is an excellent point-of-care resource for pathologists at all levels of experience and training—both as a quick reference and as an efficient review to improve knowledge and skills. Specifically designed as a point-of-care resource, the updated third edition uses a templated, highly formatted design; concise, bulleted text; and superior color images throughout that demonstrate the variety of differentiating factors in soft tissue tumors.
ASSESS
This is an excellent resource for pathologists who are interested or involved in soft tissue pathology. It is comprehensive and essentially covers any mass forming mesenchymal cell proliferation. Furthermore, pathologists (and residents) who only occasionally encounter soft tissue tumors will appreciate the high-yield and practical advice on approaching these tumors in the gross room. Grading and staging of these tumors are nicely described and illustrated. Although the book principally organizes discussion of entities by differentiation (adipocytic, myogenic, fibroblastic), it also provides an amazingly comprehensive set of tables that enables pathologists to quickly form a differential diagnosis based on overall morphologic pattern (e.g. spindle cells, epithelioid cells, etc.), tumor cell features (nuclear grooves, prominent nucleoli, etc.), vascular pattern, background inflammatory cell pattern, patient age, or tumor location. Other tables nicely suggest immunohistochemical staining panels based on morphologic pattern. This resource (in addition to the multiple high-quality microphotographs) makes the book extremely convenient as a quick reference at the microscope. In short, it is highly instructive and a wonderful contribution to the subspecialty of soft tissue pathology. Readers who enjoy the outline format of the Diagnostic Pathology series will particularly appreciate its efficient organization.

Consult the gold standard text for accurate, efficient diagnoses of challenging tumors
DESCRIPTION
Since its first publication more than 35 years ago, Enzinger and Weiss’s Soft Tissue Tumors has established itself as the most comprehensive and authoritative reference available on soft tissue pathology. The 7th Edition from Drs. John R. Goldblum, Andrew L. Folpe, and Sharon W. Weiss, continues this tradition with detailed, well-written, logically organized coverage of the full spectrum of these often difficult and challenging tumors. It offers clear guidance to practicing and trainee pathologists on diagnosis of tumors by microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and molecular genetics, as well as a significant amount of clinically significant information of interest to the clinicians who most frequently see these diseases – dermatologists, orthopaedists, and oncologists.
ASSESS
This book remains the premier reference for soft tissue pathology. It presents a comprehensive yet concise discussion of the approach to soft tissue tumor diagnosis. Moreover, the authors have done an excellent job of comprehensively and accurately reflecting recent and relevant publications without losing narrative coherence. The images are excellent. There are many new additional images provided, often reflecting recent publications regarding morphologic variations not previously addressed in the literature (such as recently described stromal variations seen in desmoid fibromatosis). Additionally, the flood of novel immunohistochemical stains and diagnostically relevant genetic mutations is comprehensively addressed in the relevant tumor descriptions as well as the chapter dedicated to molecular genetic pathology of soft tissue tumors. The book also nicely presents images and descriptions from particularly rare and novel entities. In short, this book should be considered a necessity for anyone who has even an occasional interaction with soft tissue tumors.

Unparalleled, expert coverage in the complex field of dermatopathology
DESCRIPTION
Comprehensive and lavishly illustrated, McKee’s Pathology of the Skin, 5th Edition, is your reference of choice for up-to-date, authoritative information on dermatopathology. You’ll find clinical guidance from internationally renowned experts along with details on etiology, pathogenesis, histopathology, and differential diagnosis – making this unique reference unparalleled in its wealth of clinical and histopathological material. The 5th Edition of this classic text is a must-have resource for practicing dermatopathologists and general pathologists who sign out skin biopsies.
ASSESS
This is a great dermatopathology reference. I prefer it over <B><I>Lever's Histopathology of the Skin</I></B>, 11th edition, Elder (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2015). The goal of tying in the clinical findings with the histological findings has been superbly accomplished. This fifth edition is definitely welcome, considering the ongoing advances in knowledge. It's the only book that I am aware of that includes a special section on mouse models for skin diseases in humans.

Rely on practice-proven expertise for confident diagnostic decision making
DESCRIPTION
Offering comprehensive coverage of this fast-changing field for more than 20 years, Urologic Surgical Pathology is an expert guide to all common and rare entities in the genitourinary system. The 4th Edition keeps you fully up to date with discussions of newly recognized tumors and terminologies, the latest classification schemes, current grading approaches, molecular alterations, and commonly used ancillary diagnostic techniques. With its clinical focus on day-to-day urological pathology sign-out and an emphasis on clinicopathologic and radiographic-pathologic correlations, this thoroughly revised uropathology reference is an excellent resource for diagnostic decision making.
ASSESS
"This extraordinary work continues to be a definitive reference for genitourinary pathology. It is truly comprehensive, and readers seeking a full unabbreviated explanation of the subject will find this book particularly helpful. In areas that have been recently dynamic (e.g. renal pathology tumor classification), readers are able to use the book and associated reference citations to understand the evolution of recent terms or entities in the literature (such as in the chapter on emerging or provisional renal cell carcinomas). Overall, this is an excellent book that should be in the library of any pathologist or clinician who regularly deals with diseases or tumors that affect the genitourinary system."

Avery's Neonatology Board Review
Certification and Clinical Refresher
Patricia Chess
Trust Avery’s for efficient, effective board review and clinical skills enhancement
DESCRIPTION
Prepare for success on the neonatology boards and in clinical practice with Avery’s Neonatology Board Review: Certification and Clinical Refresher. This highly practical review tool follows the exam blueprint, is based on the trusted content found in Avery’s Diseases of the Newborn, and has been carefully tailored for effective exam review by renowned neonatologist and educator, Patricia Chess, MD. Concise, relevant information is presented in a way that’s easy to study and remember, giving you an important advantage on this challenging exam, as well as in the daily, fast-changing practice of neonatology.
ASSESS
This is a very comprehensive board review book, much more detailed than the ones done by Brodsky and Martin (<B><I>Neonatology Review: Q&A</I></B>, 3rd edition (Lulu Press, 2015)) and Adams-Chapman et al. (<B><I>McGraw-Hill Specialty Board Review Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine</I></B> (McGraw-Hill, 2016)). It follows the main textbook fairly well. The advice on studying for boards and tips on budgeting time, etc. are appreciated in this type of a book. I would have liked to see the board-type questions in the book and (if needed to save space) the answers on the website.

Trusted by neonatologists for more than 40 years, Klaus and Fanaroff's Care of the High-Risk Neonate provides unique, authoritative coverage of technological and medical advances in this challenging field, and includes personal and practical editorial comments that are the hallmark of this renowned text. The 7th Edition helps you take advantage of recent advances in the NICU that have improved patient care, outcomes, and quality of life, with new coverage of genetics and imaging, new cases and commentary throughout, new contributors, and much more.
ASSESS
This is a unique and iconic book that has been the basic neonatal textbook for over 45 years. It is not as comprehensive as the standard encyclopedic books but has advantages over the softcover manuals (<B><I>Neonatology: Management, Procedures, On-Call Problems, Diseases, and Drugs</I></B>, 7th edition, Gomella et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2013), <B><I>Cloherty and Stark's Manual of Neonatal Care</I></B>, 8th edition, Eichenwald et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2017)) in that it is more engaging and very user friendly, not merely a guide to treatment. This seventh edition will find a place on my shelf next to the well-worn and frequently read previous six.

Workbook in Practical Neonatology, 6e Richard A. Polin, MD and Mervin C. Yoder, MD
A case-based, clinical context for even your most difficult day-to-day challenges
DESCRIPTION
Using a highly effective, case-based approach, Workbook in Practical Neonatology puts neonatal evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in a clinical context and tests your knowledge with questions and answers for each topic. You’ll find authoritative guidance on the problems you’re most likely to see in practice, including issues regarding resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, anemia, fluid therapy, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The 6th Edition has been extensively revised, with new authors, rewritten content, improved figures and tables, and many new cases throughout.
ASSESS
This is an excellent workbook that concentrates on many of the central issues in neonatology in an in-depth fashion with a unique case-based approach. Much of the book has been rewritten from the fifth edition with many new contributors. The book is relatively unique in the field with no real comparative titles. It is not a comprehensive textbook or resident's manual and does not cover all of the field that one would need for board review (such as <B><I>Neonatology Review</I></B>, 3rd edition, Brodsky and Martin, Lulu Press, 2015). However, it does give readers an in-depth and physiological approach to many common neonatal issues and should be well received and frequently used as a teaching tool.

DESCRIPTION
Concise, practical, and highly illustrated, Atlas of Reconstructive Breast Surgery focuses exclusively on non-cosmetic procedures performed due to cancer, accidents, or congenital defects of the breast. ASSESS
The goal of the book is worthy. However, it does not seem to meet the needs of part of its target audience. An update would need substantial revision to achieve the goal of providing an atlas of breast reconstructive surgeries for trainees. Chapters would need a lot more illustrations to describe the surgeries in the detail necessary to call the book an atlas.

Containing over 1000 conditions, the unique underlying structure of the book allows the GP to see immediately what treatment is recommended and why. All recommendations are highly specific – giving a firm guide to the GP during the consultation process rather than a list of possibilities that the GP might wish to consider.
It is thirty years since the first edition of this textbook was published. Since then there have been five editions, a wealth of new research and numerous new guidelines to improve the practice of evidence-based medicine. The seventh edition brings Practical General Practice right up to date with more robust guidance than has ever previously been possible.

Interventionalists and surgeons will still find the book useful for diagnostic purposes. New content on the vascular lab, contrast applications, and physics largely justifies this new edition.

Essential Surgery, 6e
Problems, Diagnosis and Management
Edited by : Clive R. G. Quick, MB, BS(London), FDS, FRCS(England), MS(London),
MA(Cambridge), Emeritus Consultant Surgeon, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge University
Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge; Associate Lecturer in Surgery, University of
Cambridge; Former Examiner in Basic Sciences and Clinical Surgery for FRCS and
MRCS(England); Suzanne Biers, BSc, MBBS, MD, FRCS , Urology Consultant, Addenbrooke's
Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge, UK and Tan
Arulampalam, MB, BS, MD, FRCS, Clinical Director, ICENI Centre for Surgical Training,
Research and Education; Consultant Surgeon, Colchester Hospital, Colchester, UK
The fifth edition of Essential Surgery remains at heart a traditional surgical text attempting to cover the majority of surgical specialties. It is aimed at medical students, core trainees and allied healthcare professionals. This edition attempts to match the UK intercollegiate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) syllabus, which I think it achieves. However, this makes it a book much more suited to a core surgical trainee preparing for the MRCS examination rather than your average medical student.
The book is nicely presented, in colour, and easy to navigate with good indexing. There are sufficient photos and diagrams to illustrate the points clearly, and the differential boxes and treatment algorithms for common surgical conditions are very useful. On the whole, the authors achieve their aim, which appears to be to pitch the book at the MRCS trainee level. It would, however, also be of great use to those medical students looking to impress on their surgical attachments.
KEY FEATURES
• The uniformity of the writing style and the clarity of elucidation will encourage continued reading, while the emphasis on the principles of surgery will enable a real understanding of the subject matter.
• The book incorporates a problem-solving approach wherever possible, emphasising how diagnoses are made and why particular treatments are used.
• The pathophysiological basis of surgical diseases is discussed in relation to their management, acting as a bridge between basic medical sciences and clinical problems.
• The book’s extensive use of original illustrations, colour photographs, radiology images, boxes and tables emphasises important concepts and will promote easy revision of topics.
• The principles of operative surgery and pre-, peri- and postoperative care are explained together with outlines of common operations, enabling students and trainee surgeons to properly understand procedures and to participate intelligently in the operating department.
DESCRIPTION
Essential Surgery is well-established as one of the leading textbooks of surgery for medical students, core surgical trainees and those in professions allied to medicine. Covering general surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, vascular surgery, urology, paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery and ENT, it also incorporates appropriate levels of basic science throughout. The book is ideal to accompany clinical courses, as well as being a practical manual for readers at more advanced levels requiring a revision aid for exams. Its main aim is to stimulate the reader to understanding of the practice of surgery.
