The Mysteries of AmberAmber is a beautiful, shiny, yellow stone, which has been used to make

jewelry since ancient times. It is made of a substance called resin that comes fromtrees and has hardened over millions of years. In the 19th century, people beganto ( 21 ). When they did so, they found that amber often containsfossils the remains of ancient plants and animals. However, unlike normalfossils, which are hard and usually found in rock, amber is able to preserve softmaterials, too.

Millions of years ago, leaves, insects, and small animals sometimes gottrapped in resin. After the resin became hard, the object inside would be protectedas a fossil. By examining these objects, scientists are able to study the blood andDNA of insects, frogs, and lizards that are now extinct. ( 22 ), small details, such as feathers and hair, are preserved in fossils in amber. This means that thecolors and shapes of the actual animals can be observed in the fossils.

In 2015, Lida Xing, a Chinese scientist, found the tail of a small,99millionyearold dinosaur in amber. Small details, such as the bone structure, were kept in perfect condition. Besides this, Xing noticed that the tail hadfeathers. This animal had dark brown feathers on top of the tail and lighterfeathers underneath. Based on the shape and size of these, Xing believes that thisdinosaur ( 23 ). Instead, its feathers were for warmth and decoration. This isthe first time this kind of information on ancient life has ever been found, provinghow special amber really is.

Changing Slums“Slum” is a word meaning an area of a city with lowquality housing that

often lacks basic services, such as electricity and clean water. In developingcountries, slums are created when large numbers of poor people move to cities insearch of work. According to the United Nations (UN), about one in seven peoplein the world live in slums. City officials usually consider slums a problem, and thesolution has been to try to get rid of them. Now, the UN is asking cities to( 24 ). That is, they want cities to improve slums and make them part of thecity, rather than destroy them.

Land ownership is one of the main issues the UN recommends solving. Manypeople living in slums do not actually own the land and house where they live.Even though their family built the home and lived there for many years, theyusually do not have documents to show that it belongs to them. ( 25 ), thelaw cannot protect them if somebody tries to take their home. The UNrecommends cities help people living in slums by providing them with documentsshowing that they own the land and their homes.

In addition, the UN says local governments should work to manage slumsbetter. When slums are more organized, people create businesses, which leads tomore jobs and more money. In the Dharavi slum in Mumbai, India, smallbusinesses owned by local residents add about $1 billion to the local economyeach year. This suggests that cities do not need to get rid of slums. Instead, slumscan ( 26 ).

From: Pete Merrick <[email protected]>To: Wendy Hensley <[email protected]>Date: May 31Subject: Volunteer writing

Dear Ms. Hensley,Thanks for your interest in writing for our magazine, Greenzine. As you know,Greenzine is an online magazine that publishes articles about the environment. It’sa nonprofit magazine, so we offer all of our material to readers for free every month.Because of this, we ask volunteers to write all our articles instead of hiring paidwriters. You said in your e-mail that you’d like to write for us because you’re interested inthe environment and want to get some writing experience. Becoming a volunteerwriter is a great way for a college student like yourself to improve your skills! We’rehappy to have young writers who have a passion for saving the earth. We’d like togive you a chance to write for us, and we were wondering if you could write anarticle for the next issue.Right now, we’re looking for someone to review new “green” products that aresupposed to be better for the environment. I’ve attached a list of these products tothis e-mail along with an application form. Please choose one to write about, send inthe application form, and then, we’ll send you a free sample. Once you’ve writtenyour article, please e-mail it to me by June 25, and I’ll have a look at it.Sincerely,Pete MerrickManaging Editor, Greenzine

Metal FoamWhen we think about dangers to our health, we usually think of dangerous diseases.

However, one of the leading causes of death around the world is traffic accidents. In fact, traffic accidents are the biggest cause of death for people aged 15 to 29. Furthermore, notonly do 1.2 million people die in such accidents every year, but 20 to 50 million peopleare also injured. While some wealthy countries have reduced the number of trafficaccidents in recent years, they are increasing rapidly in developing countries.

One way to deal with this problem is to make cars that are better able to protect thepeople inside them during accidents. For many years, researchers have been interested inusing metal foam to do this. Metal foam refers to a metal, usually steel or aluminum, which has had bubbles of air or another gas inserted into it. Usually the metal foam isbetween 75 to 95 percent air. This makes it very light compared to ordinary metal. Metalfoams have been created for some time, but most of them have been very weak. This hasmade it difficult to use them in vehicles.

Afsaneh Rabiei, a scientist at North Carolina State University in the United States, has developed a new metal foam. Rabiei spent five years developing it. According to her,the problem with earlier metal foams was that the bubbles were various sizes. In the newmetal foam, though, the bubbles are regular in size. This results in a much stronger metalfoam.

Tests carried out by Rabiei show that the new material is five to six times strongerthan other metal foams, and also greatly decreases the damage that occurs in a crash. Thismeans that, if it were to be used to build cars, it would be much better than ordinarymetals at protecting drivers and passengers. Rabiei believes that the new metal foamcould also be used in boats and airplanes, as well as to help protect buildings againstearthquakes.

(30) Traffic accidents are1 leading to more people having dangerous diseases.2 the main cause of death for people of all ages in wealthy countries.3 becoming more and more of a problem in developing countries.4 usually caused by drivers who are between the ages of 15 and 29.

(31) What is one problem with most types of metal foam?1 They are not strong enough to improve the safety of cars.2 They are made of aluminum which is too light to use in cars.3 The steel that is used to make them is not filled with enough bubbles.4 The air inside them causes environmental damage when it is released.

(32) What has Afsaneh Rabiei developed?1 A way to release the unnecessary bubbles from metal foam.2 A type of metal foam in which each of the bubbles is the same size.3 A stronger type of metal that can be used to create better metal foam.4 A quicker way to produce the metal that is used to create metal foam.

(33) What is one possible benefit of Rabiei’s new material?1 It can reduce the damage and injuries that result from car crashes.2 It can be used to prevent a large number of earthquakes.3 It may allow companies to build cars that are five to six times cheaper.4 It may decrease the number of boat and airplane accidents that occur.

Counting Every CitizenIn recent decades, India has been experiencing very rapid economic growth. Yet,

while the country as a whole has grown much wealthier, it still has more poor peoplethan any other country in the world. It is difficult to say exactly how many poor peoplethere are in India, but many experts agree that around a third of the population suffersfrom poverty. Although the Indian government has many programs designed to help thesepeople, many people still do not receive the financial support they need. The nationalgovernment believes one reason is that local officials sometimes steal this money.

In order to solve this problem, the national government started a program in 2010with the aim of using new technology to help the poor. This program is known as theUnique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This is a project to record the identityof every Indian individual in a huge government database. The government records thename, date of birth, address, and fingerprints of each person. Each person is then given anumber. By 2018, 93 percent of the population had been recorded in this way.

It is hoped that the UIDAI will allow individuals to deal directly with the nationalgovernment rather than going through local officials. For example, the government givesmoney to people with less than a certain income. This money is now paid directly intoindividuals’ bank accounts, rather than through local offices. The system also allowspeople to prove who they are, so they are able to obtain education, drivers’ licenses, andother government services.

Not everybody, though, thinks that the new system is a success. While somegovernment officials argue that it provides a model for other developing countries thatwant to help the poor, some people point to problems. For example, if a mistake is madewhen recording the details of an individual, it is extremely difficult to get it corrected andpeople will be unable to access government services. In addition, some machinesdesigned to check the identity of individuals do not work properly. However, the Indiangovernment is confident that it will solve these problems before long, and the UIDAI willbe a success.

3 the number of people living in poverty is still high despite economicprogress.

4 local officials have started stealing money in order to help poor people intheir area.

(35) What is the purpose of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)?1 It supports businesses that are trying to create databases.2 It gathers basic data about all the citizens of the country.3 It helps poor people gain access to new types of technology.4 It collects the fingerprints of people who have committed crimes.

(36) What is one benefit of the UIDAI program?1 Poor Indians can receive money directly from the national government.2 Local governments are able to decide how money in their regions is spent.3 It makes it easier for poor Indians to find new jobs in local areas.4 It helps people pay the fees that are needed for their children’s education.
