Gratitude is essential in the pursuit of joy. It allows us to

move from counting our burdens to counting our blessings.

In a study by Emmons and McCullough, they found that

grateful people do not seem to ignore or deny the negative

aspects of life; they simply choose to appreciate what is

positive as well. They also concluded that people with a

strong disposition toward gratitude have the capacity to

be empathic and take the perspective of others.

Most of us associate gratitude with saying “thank-you” to someone who has

helped us or given us something, but gratitude is not just an action, gratitude is

a positive emotion that serves a purpose; it is deep appreciation that produces

longer positivity.

Gratitude is a powerful tool for strengthening interpersonal relationships. People

can use gratitude to build new social relations or make current ones better. Acts

of gratitude can be used to apologize, make amends, or solve other problems.

When someone performs an act of gratitude for another person, that person

may be motivated to do something for that person or pay it forward as acts of

gratitude aren’t only for the people we know.

Here at Eton, children practice gratitude with their classmates, teachers, and

everyone that helps them in their daily lives.

Gross National Happiness, a Big Idea that Could Change the World.

The theme of this last issue of our School’s publication

for this term invites us to reflect about gratitude. In the

dictionary, gratitude is defined as the quality or feeling of

being grateful or thankful. I believe that if you are grateful

for things in your life, you must consequently feel a sense

of happiness.

During the month of April, I was invited by the College of

Education of the Royal University of Bhutan to conduct a

presentation at the 7th Art for Early Childhood Conference

in Paro. Bhutan, a place of ancient monasteries and

fluttering prayer flags, is considered to be the kingdom

of happiness, a country that measures Gross National

Happiness. In Bhutan, they believe happiness is the

ultimate purpose of human progress and development.

The government of Bhutan dedicates itself to create

conditions that enable individuals to achieve happiness

by encouraging people to feel grateful for what they have

and not for what they want. During my days in Bhutan,

and somewhat in disbelief of what they preached, I caught

myself trying to prove whether what they advertised

was actually true. But it was inevitable to feel with

certainty and clarity the vibrant spirit of happy people

who reminded me to focus on feeling blessed every day

of my life. I feel honored that the Dean of the College of

Education of Paro, Bhutan invited me to participate in an

experience that deeply touched my life.

A question that is always in mind when planning a pedagogical

proposal for my children is, “Is this something worth learning?”

Projects are the soul of our educational model where children

are constantly provoked to initiate meaningful and purposeful

learning experiences.

“Timepieces” was a rich project that started with the children’s

interest to fix my broken watch. They shared the ideas they

had and made use of their problem-solving skills and ability

to face challenges. Children shared all types of stories that

portrayed not only the way this topic was relevant and close

to them, but also the knowledge they built as a result of

their personal experiences, including misconceptions. Later,

they worked on a graphic representation of the facts they

knew about timepieces and what they were eager to learn

throughout their inquiry. Experts were invited to our class, and

we asked them all sorts of questions. In order to be in contact

with first-hand information, we visited a store and workshop

where the children could observe experts fixing timepieces.

Finally, they shared their findings by representing models in

detail, making it a perdurable experience for they had given

something back to our learning community.

It has been my pleasure to accompany my children (3 and 4

year-olds) in an empathetic approach to plants. For the last

couple of months, the children have established a deep and

meaningful relationship with the plants around the School.

The moment we decided to start our project was when the

gardener of our School forgot some plants on our terrace.

Children celebrated their presence and loved what they

brought to our environment.

Ever since children have smelled flower scents and enjoyed

their colors, we have cherished the softness of its leaves and

respected its thorns. We have watered them and protected

its roots from insects. We have tasted the petals and fruits

the plants have given us. We have witnessed their inevitable

life cycle and have wondered how to protect them to allow

them to stay with us longer. Enjoying the beauty of plants,

recognizing the peace they bring to our lives, and mindfully

noticing them have let us share those kinds of feelings families

experience.

The possibility of acknowledging oneself as equal to another

-completely different- living organism has brought us to

discover new perspectives in our coexistence. It has awakened

a pure desire to help, to compose music for, and to modify our

routines to make sure its needs are fulfilled.

Based on the knowledge acquired on field trips and from

experts that have spoken to them, the children have been

able to understand more about plant needs and features.

They have taken active roles in building a caring community.

The children are motivated to pass on their wisdom to our

younger generation and have started a campaign to invite our

extended School Family to pitch in.

Gratitude emerges only when we empathetically become part

of a community.

Cuenta una leyenda que estamos hechos de maíz, que cada

parte de nuestro ser se encuentra conformada por este

alimento tan venerado por las primeras culturas de nuestro

país, quienes utilizaban el maíz no sólo como moneda de

cambio, sino que también formaba parte de la vida cotidiana.

Con él se elaboraban diversos platillos para alimentarse y

honrar a sus dioses.

Uno de estos platillos es el tamal y en tercero IV nos

propusimos investigar cómo este importante alimento de los

primeros pueblos mexicanos llegó a nuestra mesa.

Ciudad de México, Michoacán y Oaxaca fueron las entidades

elegidas por los niños. Ellos concluyeron que en esos estados

este alimento está presente en sus principales celebraciones

y festividades tanto en su presentación dulce como salada.

Durante la investigación surgieron múltiples interrogantes,

¿Los tamales son sólo mexicanos? ¿A qué sabían antes?

¿Por qué los tamales tienen diferentes ingredientes según

la región? ¿Cómo se hacían los tamales y cómo se hacen

ahora? ¿250 gr de pasas equivale a un cuarto de taza, verdad

Miss?... se escuchaba por los pasillos.

De esta forma, colores, texturas, olores, conversiones,

seguimiento de instrucciones, ubicación geográfica,

recuerdos y experiencias se entrelazaron para dar paso a

la construcción de un aprendizaje más vívido sobre toda la

complejidad y la riqueza cultural que contiene un alimento

típico mexicano. Dicen que los seres humanos estamos

hechos de maíz, pero también de colores y sabores, de

conocimientos que adquieren una nueva dimensión a través

de la investigación.

Los contenidos de los medios de comunicación a los que

nuestros niños están expuestos tienen un impacto profundo

en su desarrollo social, emocional y cognitivo. Aprender a

utilizarlos y usar sabiamente la tecnología es una habilidad

esencial e imperativa que debemos fomentar y desarrollar

para la vida y el aprendizaje en el siglo XXI.

Los alumnos realizaron una investigación para el proyecto

“Soy ciudadano digital”, en el que desarrollaron un trabajo de

análisis y reflexión sobre las redes sociales y el uso adecuado

del internet. Los temas que investigaron fueron la protección

y privacidad en el uso de las redes sociales, cyberbullying,

¿qué es la huella digital?, ¿cómo investigar en internet? y

el uso de la plataforma Common Sense Media como recurso

para educar al ciudadano digital. Aunque uno de los enfoques

que nos interesaba tratar, con especial énfasis, es el de una

convivencia escolar armónica y la responsabilidad individual

como internautas.

Para este proyecto pudimos contar con el apoyo de expertos

que proporcionaron consejos sobre prácticas confiables e

instrumentos innovadores en función del aprovechamiento

de los medios y la tecnología como herramientas positivas

en nuestra formación. También visitaron Cinema Park

para complementar el tema de la búsqueda imparcial de

información y, a través de las lecturas en Newsela, pudieron

enriquecer su visión.

Pudieron platicar sus experiencias en las redes sociales y

conocimos las consecuencias del mal uso de las mismas o del

cyberbullying. Con la técnica de pensamiento creativo “lluvia

de ideas”, cada equipo buscó palabras claves relacionadas

con el tema que les correspondía y realizaron el intercambio

y análisis a través de la red Grafio, lo que les permitió ampliar

y mantener una línea de investigación mucho más guiada y

precisa. Con el trabajo colaborativo pudieron profundizar

sobre diferentes aspectos, explorar nuevos contextos,

construir nuevas ideas y utilizar diferentes aplicaciones y

plataformas potencializando sus cualidades y atendiendo a

las diferentes necesidades que cada alumno tiene.

Este año, por iniciativa de nuestros alumnos del Colegio,

se creó REC, Eton Film Club como un taller cuya principal

estrategia se basa en el trabajo colaborativo, la creatividad

y la pasión de sus integrantes al desarrollar proyectos

interdisciplinarios. Adoptar este modelo de trabajo permite

que alumnos de 7.º a 12.º aprendan a compartir y debatir

ideas, desarrollen la apreciación artística y la crítica basada

en la argumentación y la observación abierta.

Una de las experiencias que más impactó al grupo fue la

invitación del Tecnológico de Monterrey a participar en

su Digital Filmmaking Bootcamp, evento que reúne a las

preparatorias seleccionadas para competir en la realización

de un cortometraje y en el que los equipos deben escribir,

producir, filmar y editar un material audiovisual en menos de

48 h. Nuestro equipo, lidereado por Manuel Sánchez, contó

con la participación de Nicole Dieter y Alejandro Valencia y dos

alumnas de Secundaria, Fernanda Vega y Mariela Bertrán,

quienes participaron y vivieron esta experiencia diseñada

exclusivamente para alumnos de preparatoria. Vale destacar

que el producto cinematográfico “The Interview” obtuvo el

tercer lugar.

Personal Project

“The most significant thing I have learned about the IB Personal Project is that

you must do what you feel passionate about. I chose to do what I like the most:

composing music. When I started working on my Project, I felt very excited about

working on my own original scores for one year even though the IB Personal

Project was such a task. I found myself through several obstacles and days that

made me feel blocked. However, I always kept looking for the way to solve every

challenge I faced during the Project: I spent whole days sitting next to the piano,

waiting for an idea to come, and I also spent weeks looking for a studio to record

my compositions! Without doubt, the result of my effort was bigger than the

small challenges I faced during this term. I feel proud about all the process I

followed and what I achieved during the year.”

“The Personal Project was challenging. It was hard to think of an idea I would be

working on for the next few months, and completing it was even more difficult.

As challenging and laborious as it was, this was one of the most rewarding

experiences of my life. By writing a book of poetry, I could see something new

not just in me, but in every person that I shared it with. Whether they responded

positively or negatively, there was a response, and that was what I was looking

for. For most of it, the Personal Project was stressful, but as it all came together,

I realized how much I could do with just a simple idea.”

“My IB Personal Project was an experience I will never forget! It was a long and

challenging process full of emotions I cannot explain. It fulfilled me with knowledge

that led me to be reflective and passionate about my research, as well as very

proud of what I could and can accomplish. It made me discover new things about

myself and made me realize that I am capable of things I did not even think of, like

creating a business plan for the construction of a residential building. The most

valuable aspect of my Project is that my business plan will become something

real and concrete in the future. I am very satisfied with my project because it

is something in which I put my best effort, dedication, and love. I will always be

grateful to all the people that were close to me during this tough process. Finally,

looking at what I have achieved, I can say it was all worth it!”

M U N para entender el mundo

Hace dos años decidí involucrarme con el equipo de debate

de las Naciones Unidas del Colegio, pues había escuchado

sobre los beneficios de participar en este tipo de prácticas.

Sin embargo, poco sabía sobre cómo esta decisión iba a

cambiarme.

Modelos de las Naciones Unidas (MUN) es una simulación de

los órganos dentro de la ONU como el Consejo de Seguridad,

la Asamblea General, el Consejo Económico Social, entre

otras. En estos debates cada alumno se transforma en el

más alto comisionado del país que le tocó representar.

Como al interior de la organización se encuentran un

sinnúmero de comités, que se enfocan de maneras distintas

en diferentes áreas -políticas, económicas y sociales- para

llegar a una resolución y poder mejorar el conflicto, los

participantes deben demostrar su preparación mediante un

diálogo persuasivo y respetuoso.

Debatir en MUN para mí representa mayormente dos cosas:

saber qué está pasando en el mundo y las causas y querer

participar en el cambio que se necesita. Al debatir se adquiere

una gran cantidad de información y el análisis se convierte en

una aptitud indispensable, que te abre los ojos y te ayuda a

comprender todos los fenómenos.

Finalmente, la razón por la que me quedé en los debates

es porque siento que estoy aportando, porque en verdad

creo que tenemos la habilidad de cambiar el mundo y que,

debido a la privilegiada educación que gozamos, tenemos la

responsabilidad de heredar a las futuras generaciones un

planeta con menos guerra, con menos odio, un lugar donde la

empatía y la fraternidad abunden y las paredes físicas y las de

la ignorancia sean derribadas.

Las experiencias de CAS (Community and Service) se enfocan

en el modelo de aprendizaje-servicio, que es el desarrollo y

la aplicación de conocimientos y habilidades para cubrir una

necesidad identificada en las comunidades que reciben este

apoyo a partir de una investigación. Los alumnos participan

en iniciativas de servicio que pueden estar relacionadas

con temas estudiados previamente en el currículo y que se

vuelven una extensión de aprendizaje en condiciones reales.

Para la construcción de 3 calentadores solares, este año

el Profesor Francisco Rodríguez logró la vinculación entre

los proyectos de la materia de Física con el programa

ITAER (Instituto de Transculturación Ambiental y Energías

Renovables), que orienta sus investigaciones hacia el

desarrollo sustentable en diferentes ámbitos.

“La comunidad es parte del salón de clases y motiva al aprendizaje en el servicio.”

Acerca de la experiencia en este trabajo nos comenta Hyun

Jong Yoo, alumno de 12.o:

“Este taller, proporcionado por ITAER, no sólo fue un simple

taller de introducción a los calentadores solares, sino una

lección de conciencia hacia los efectos de nuestras acciones

en el medio ambiente, que pueden llegar a niveles fatales. Los

calentadores solares serán utilizados por la comunidad de

Atlacomulco y Chimalhuacán y nosotros enseñaremos a la

comunidad el uso sin trastocar sus hábitos y valores, dando

acceso sustentable para el agua caliente sin tener que usar

electricidad y gastar más dinero. El taller me hizo reflexionar

sobre la contaminación que yo mismo causaba, por lo que

busqué en mi casa maneras de reducir mi huella ecológica,

como por ejemplo, reducir la basura o bañarme en 5 minutos.”

L os expertos definen la gratitud como una emoción social que

fortalece las relaciones y que nos permite ver cómo hemos sido

apoyados y reconocidos por otras personas. Por un lado, es un

acto de bondad que requiere reconocer que hay cosas buenas en

el mundo, dones y beneficios que hemos recibido, la gratitud nos

anima a identificar la bondad que hay en nuestra vida. Por otro

lado, consiste en investigar de dónde viene esa bondad, reconocer

las fuentes de bondad, esto implica un acto de humildad, hacernos

conscientes de la dependencia que tenemos de los otros.

La gratitud puede tener efectos transformadores en la vida como:

Permitirnos celebrar el presente, nos hace apreciar el valor

de algo y sacarle el mayor provecho. Participar más en la vida,

ponderando lo positivo.

Nos ayuda a bloquear las emociones tóxicas y negativas como

la envidia y el resentimiento, incluso hay evidencia que muestra

que se pueden reducir en frecuencia y duración los episodios de

depresión.

Nos hace más resistentes al estrés, una disposición más

agradecida nos ayuda a recuperarnos más rápidamente de

eventos negativos.

Nos da un mayor sentido de autoestima porque reconocemos las

contribuciones que otras personas han hecho en nuestra vida.

Por si fuera poco, hay estudios que reportan que las personas que

practican la gratitud tienen sistemas inmunológicos más fuertes,

niveles más altos de emociones positivas; son más alegres y

optimistas, se sienten menos solos y actúan con más generosidad

y compasión.

Sólo porque la gratitud es buena no significa que sea fácil, nos

obliga a romper paradigmas “egoístas” como el de no reconocer

o dar crédito a otros de nuestros éxitos. También puede haber

resistencia a perder el control y no aceptar la vida tal como es y

agradecer lo que se tiene.

Practicar la gratitud requiere de un gran esfuerzo consciente y

ahí es donde entramos todos los educadores, padres y maestros

del Eton, fomentando de manera cotidiana e intencionada el

agradecimiento, para crear una sociedad más recíproca y altruista

que nos ayude a construir un mundo mejor, como dice el sociólogo

Georg Simmel, la gratitud es “la memoria moral de la humanidad”.

La maternidad, sin dudarlo, es un don, un

privilegio, una responsabilidad… pero sobre

todo una vocación. Ser mamá es una de

las tareas más afortunadas que la vida nos

puede confiar. Ante todo, es ser copartícipe

de la creación. Reflexionar sobre esta idea

nos hace pensar que como madre tienes la

posibilidad de contribuir directamente a la

formación de un mundo mejor y que tienes

la posibilidad de formar personas con una

inmensa capacidad de ser felices, a pesar

de todo lo que ello conlleva.

Durante las diversas actividades se logró reunir fondos para

colaborar con Fundación IMSS a través de la donación de

24 sillas de acompañante y 200 bebenetos para el Hospital

de Ginecología y Obstetricia No. 4. Con las donaciones de

ropa, pañales y accesorios para bebé que logramos reunir,

preparamos alrededor de 150 paquetes que se donaron al

mismo hospital.

En este año escolar, el Comité de Cuidado Nutricional tuvo como prioridad

orientar a los niños hacia mejores decisiones para alimentarse. Trabajamos

de manera conjunta con el Colegio para ofrecer opciones más saludables

en la Cafetería y realizamos talleres de cocina padres e hijos, que ayudaron

a reforzar nuestros objetivos. Conscientes de que el cambio de hábitos

y costumbres es difícil, estamos seguras de que es un acierto crear

El 3 y 4 de marzo pudimos disfrutar del Eton Sports Challenge Day y

del Eton Sports Family Day. Más de mil personas acudieron al Colegio

desde muy temprano para iniciar el día con una divertida lluvia de color

en nuestra carrera-caminata y después continuar disfrutando de las

variadas actividades recreativas y deportivas diseñadas en función

del disfrute familiar. ¡Fue una gran fiesta! Agradecemos su apoyo y

participación, sin los que hubiera sido imposible llevar a cabo eventos

tan memorables. Para el próximo ciclo escolar estamos preparando

grandes sorpresas que enriquecerán más estas actividades.

Agradecemos a toda la comunidad Eton por su activa participación en las actividades realizadas en este ciclo escolar, algunas de ellas son:

Dos colectas de papel y cartón para reunir material reciclable.

El Día de la Tierra se construyeron huertos verticales en el Toddler Center para que los alumnos participen en el cuidado de su entorno.

Diferentes grupos de Primaria participaron en las siguientes actividades:

• Mantenimiento de plantas ornamentales sembradas en llantas recicladas.

• Proyección interactiva Planeta Hogar.

• Elaboración de champú y pasta de dientes con materiales ecológicos.

• Obtención de la huella ecológica.

• Visita al Parque Ecoguardas.

Los alumnos de Bachillerato participaron en la reforestación de áreas verdes.

Gracias al apoyo del Colegio y de los padres de familia que participaron, alcanzamos los objetivos que teníamos proyectados para este ciclo escolar, a través de las siguientes actividades:

• Taller de comunicación PET (Parent Effectiveness Training), en el cual los papás obtuvieron el certificado de Gordon Training International.

• Pláticas de las conferencistas Karla Wheelock, Gabriela Ruiz y Clarita Sierra.

• Se atendieron temas sobre motivación, comunicación familiar, entre otros, con la proyección de material audiovisual en Cinema Park de Santa Fe.

• Se abordaron diversos temas de interés familiar y social con la guía de expertos para que padres, maestros y alumnos construyamos una Convivencia Sana.

Esperamos que año con año siga creciendo la colaboración de todos, para que continuemos creando un entorno seguro para nuestros hijos y nuestra sociedad.

El trabajo colegiado de todo el equipo de profesores, el intercambio de experiencias profesionales, el apoyo incondicional de

nuestras directoras, la solidaridad en situaciones difíciles, la comunicación y apertura con la comunidad escolar han sido algunos

factores fundamentales para que actualmente el After-School Program sea una oportunidad de vivencias inolvidables, que

pueden marcar positivamente la vida de nuestros alumnos.

Gracias a todos, Eton se ha consolidado como protagonista en los eventos y competiciones. Algunos de los logros que obtuvimos

Los equipos de básquetbol

El enfoque y la planificación

metodológica de las actividades

de AFI permite que los alumnos

hagan ejercicio de manera

divertida y variada.

El talento de los alumnos de teatro en la obra es notorio,

prueba de ello son las reacciones del público en diferentes

presentaciones realizadas a lo largo del ciclo escolar.

Varios de nuestros taekwondoines

han elevado su nivel al obtener

cinta negra y estos resultados

han promovido el interés de

otros alumnos por practicar este

deporte.

My Experience in Reggio Emilia

The Reggio Emilia philosophy plays an integral role in our

learning process at Eton. It was not until I arrived in the village

of Reggio Emilia and witnessed the practice in a very real and

consistent manner, that I fully appreciated the whole aspect

of the philosophy in a practical sense.

Teachers’ interaction and teamwork have a profound impact

on how children and their ideas are respected and, in turn,

influence how they learn and relate to each other. We

were able to observe the method of documentation that

contributes to the holistic teaching practice at Reggio Emilia

as every child’s thoughts are listened to and recorded with

respect. The way teachers use this documentation to build

on knowledge and plan for learning experiences specifically

tailored to children’s needs and interests was inspiring.

The school’s teamwork embraces and influences the entire

community: Parents, leaders, and experts interact on a daily

basis to contribute to a unique learning experience for the

children. Their projects and ideas are not restricted to school

grounds, they overflow into the village and are practically

applied to add value to the community in a realistic way.

The experience and teaching practices we witnessed will

stay with us forever and inspire us to do our best to keep

implementing this community teaching and philosophy at

Eton, a philosophy that does not embrace only teachers, but

children and parents as well.

34AEton helped me believe in myself as it is a space where

being original and authentic is something good. It taught

me to respect others, admire them, and learn from

them. Thanks to that, I was able to make friends from

all around the world after I graduated while I studied

abroad, in France, for a year.

Eton taught me how to dream, be creative, dare, and set

bigger goals after every achievement, being a person

with ethics and principles. I learned how incredible it

is to help others and I also learned to value my culture

and feel proud of my roots as I also appreciate other

cultures.

Now, I work as a coeditor in Red Carpet, a fashion,

lifestyle, entrepreneurship, and cultural magazine in

Reforma newspaper.

The most valuable thing Eton gave me is the family I

found in the classrooms and the friends that are now

brothers.

I believe that life is about the path we walk through. It’s

been around seven years since I graduated from high

school, and I can say you never quite “adjust”.

Nevertheless, motion is the first condition of being alive,

and life is there with all its possibilities. Eton gave me

the tools to overcome the countless obstacles I have

encountered every day. Even if everything changes,

there is one thing that does not change, and that is

my high school friends. Life can turn into any direction,

however it is always sweeter when you share it. Today,

I’m moving to London to take my Master’s Degree in

Fine Arts. Thank you Eton for encouraging my dreams.

Ms. Kat McKeown brought a spark of global citizenship, which is the

essential core of her native Montreal, Canada, to Eton. A fantastic

and beloved Literature teacher who inspired seven generations of

students to appreciate Literature from Shakespeare to Atwood.

During her years at Eton, Ms. Kat shared with us her passion for

protecting the environment and her natural sense of inclusion and

embracement of human diversity. An intellectually curious risk-

taker, Kat will continue her journey exploring new cultures. Thank

you, Ms. Kat, for being part of our daily life in Middle & High School.

A Well Earned Retirement

We also wish success to all the Eton community members that will start new projects.

Our time at Eton School has come to an end. These numbers represent who we are, but sometimes

we fail to realize that everyone walks the same line when it comes to time. Despite this, we all have

chosen separate paths, living and learning in our own way.

We have walked the same line in unison these last few weeks, feeling and living the same emotions

and experiences. Ultimately, we have managed to enjoy the ride and connect more than ever as we

have realized we took for granted many things we will never experience again, things that seemed

insignificant, but turned out to mean everything to us.

In the end, I offer you this piece of advice: Do not take the relationships you formed here for granted,

cherish the people close to you, value whatever you do, and always love yourself while doing so.

Time can be tricky: The future suddenly becomes the present, and the present transforms into the

past, so do not take time for granted. While our days may go by slowly, our years will go by fast.

Don’t waste another second, be wise, be happy, and live your life to the fullest.
