Notes • Alabama concluded the fall portion of the

2020-21 schedule with a 2-6 record and 1-3 on the road. They visit Fayetteville after sweeping the road series at Ole Miss last weekend (Feb. 5-6) in back-to-back five-setters.

RAZORBACKS RACK UP SEC WEEKLY AWARDS The Hogs had three players earn four SEC Weekly Awards after their performance at Georgia. Junior Lauren Evans earned the first SEC award of her career, recognized as the Defensive Player of the Week, classmate Gracie Ryan was named Setter of the Week and sophomore Jillian Gillen earned Offensive Player of the Week and was chosen from all weekly award winners as the overall Player of the Week. The trio’s performances helped Arkansas defeat Georgia for the first time in Athens since 2016, it also marks the first time since 2018 that Arkansas defeated a team in straight sets on the road.

LAST TIME OUT Arkansas is hosting Alabama after it completed its sweep of Georgia on Friday night in Athens, the Razorbacks defeated the Bulldogs in three sets (26-24, 25-19, 25-23). With the win, Arkansas handed Georgia its first series sweep since the non-traditional season began in the fall.

TOUGH KENTUCKY SERIES The Razorbacks most recently dropped their weekend finale to No. 4 Kentucky, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon inside Barnhill Arena (25-15, 25-24, 26-24). Arkansas will be looking to improve upon its offensive effectiveness headed into its weekend in Athens, after averaging a .093 attack percentage against Kentucky.

SETTER DEPTH After adding freshman Jordyn Gates to the roster in the fall, the Razorbacks welcome mid-year enrollee Hannah Hogue to the gym. With Hogue, the Hogs have great depth at the setter position, primarily running a 5-1 with Gracie Ryan in the one spot. Hogue is a two-time All-Arkansas Preps winner and helped Southside HS to back-to-back Class 6A state finals in 2018 and 2019.

FALL RECAP Arkansas finished the fall at 6-2, with the most SEC wins since 2017 and the best SEC record through eight matches since 2003. The Hogs also swept Ole Miss and a ranked Texas A&M team in Barnhill to stay undefeated in Fayetteville and finish the fall 4-0 at home. The Razorbacks finished the 2020 season ranked No. 15 by the AVCA and received 23 votes in the 2021 preason poll (Jan. 5).

HEAD EARNS FIRST SEC WEEKLY AWARD An outside hitter from Winter Garden, Fla., Head averaged 4.21 points, 3.71 kills and 3.14 digs per set and owned a .397 hitting percentage in the two victories over Ole Miss this past weekend. Head tallied 15 kills and 10 digs in the first match and followed that with 11 kills and 12 digs to post her fourth consecutive double-double. She also added three aces and one block assist to help lead the Razorbacks to their first 4-0 start in conference play since 2003. Head stands as the only SEC player with four double-doubles through just as many matches and is second among SEC freshmen in total digs and first in total kills. She ranks fifth and ninth among Division I freshmen in those respective categories.

GRACIE RYAN THE “GO-TO GIRL” After setting a career-record in the Hogs’ first win at State with 49 assists, Ryan turned around to beat her own record with 58 assists in the Hogs’ win on Sunday. She is currently ranked 8th in the NCAA for assists per set (10.80) and ranked 2nd in the SEC behind Kentucky’s Madison Lilley.

SIDELINE ADDITIONS Arkansas has announced the addition of, 2018 USMC/AVCA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year, Lauren Ramatowski as Arkansas volleyball’s newest assistant coach. Ramatowski will be responsible for working with and analyzing the Razor-backs’ defensive systems. Ramatowski comes to Arkansas after a two-year stint at Washburn University. After finishing with a record of 27-4, the Washburn volleyball team checked in at No. 5 in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll of the 2019 season.

SCHOOL RECORD 7 TEAMS EARN APR PUBLIC REC. AWARDS The Razorbacks’ women’s cross country, women’s golf, gymnastics, softball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and volleyball teams were honored for their standing among the top 10 percent of academic performing teams in the country in their respective sports in the multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the 2018-19 academic year. Volleyball made its second consecutive appearance on the listing of programs honored by the NCAA for APR excellence. The recognition was the fifth overall for volleyball. The seven awards are the most in school history, topping the six programs that were recognized last year in 2017-18. The University of Arkansas has earned a total of 36 awards since the start of the APR Public Recognition program, including 13 such honors in the past two years alone.

RAZORBACK ATHLETICS LAUNCHES HOGS UNITED The University of Arkansas Department of Athletics has restructured, expanded and rebranded its diversity and inclusion program into Hogs UNITED. Calls for action regarding social injustice from around the country prompted the department to examine and enhance its existing Cultural Competency Working Group under the leadership of Dr. Christopher Bader. Bader joined the University in July 2019 as the Assistant Athletics Director for Mental Health and Performance. One of the first priorities of Hogs UNITED was to create a collaborative effort between the student-athletes, coaches, and staff. This effort is aimed at promoting education, advocacy, and action in the areas of diversity and inclusive excellence.

HEAD COACH JASON WATSON | 5TH YEAR AT ARKANSAS (16TH OVERALL)

Jason Watson was named the head coach of the Universi-ty of Arkansas volleyball team on January 7, 2016, to become the third head coach in program history. In 11 prior seasons as a head coach at BYU (2005-07) and Arizona State (2008-15), Watson enters the 2019 season with a 239-197 (.548) record and has guided his teams to seven NCAA Tournament selec-tions. Heading into his fifth season at the helm, Watson is look-ing to put the Hogs back in forward motion after closing out the 2018 season at 11-17. The Razorabcks are predicted to fin-ish two spots higher in the SEC than where they finished in 2018 - one could contribute the improvement from the recog-nized incoming class that earned Highest Honorable Mention by PrepVolleyball.com. In his second season in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks tal-lied a 10-win improvement from the previous year, finishing the campaign with a 19-11 overall record and 9-9 mark in SEC play. Arkansas’ 10 wins at Barnhill Arena marked the pro-gram’s highest home-win total since 2012. Arkansas finished the year at No. 47 in the season-ending RPI rankings. Individually, senior Pilar Victoria led the NCAA with 5.47 kills per set and 6.08 points per set in 2017 and earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention and All-SEC honors. Addition-ally, setter Rachel Rippee collected AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention accolades. The Razorbacks matched their SEC output from the pre-vious season with a 7-11 mark in league play during Watson’s first year including six wins in their last nine matches of the year. Individually, senior Danielle Harbin emerged to finish third in the SEC with 4.22 kills per set on her way to AVCA All-South Region honors. In eight years in Tempe, Ariz., Watson transformed ASU Volleyball from a perennial sub-.500 program into a post-season regular. In his last four seasons, the Sun Devils av-eraged more than 19 wins per season with four-consecutive bids to the NCAA Tournament. Watson also coached a pair of All-America performers, one in each of the past two seasons, for ASU’s first national honorees since 2000. Arizona State began the 2015 campaign with a 15-0 record and reached as high as No. 5 in the AVCA Top 25 poll. The Sun Devils also opened conference play with their best start in the Pac-10/12 era with four wins including the program’s first win over Stanford in 15 years. In 2014, ASU opened the season with six straight wins on the way to a 20-14 record. The Sun Devils were ranked in each AVCA regular season poll. Making its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, ASU defeated Texas A&M 3-1 to advance to the second round of the Tournament for the first time since 2006.

Watson led ASU to a 19-13 overall record in 2013 including a 3-0 upset of then-NCAA defending champion Texas. The Sun Devils started the season without dropping a set in their first seven matches. Making its second consecutive NCAA Tourna-ment appearance, ASU dropped a five-set match to BYU in the first round. In 2012, the Sun Devil squad opened with an 11-2 record, the best start since 1992. The Sun Devils finished with 20 wins — the most in a single season at ASU since 1993. The nine conference wins equaled the most since 2000. ASU made the program’s 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and Wat-son became just the fifth coach from ASU to guide the Sun Devils to a NCAA postseason berth. Watson arrived as the head coach at ASU in 2008. In 2013, he was also named head coach of the sand volleyball team when the sport was added to the athletics program. In June 2015, Watson was selected by USA Volleyball to serve as the head coach of the U.S. Collegiate National Team on a six-match tour of China. In his three seasons at the helm of the BYU program, Watson compiled a 74-18 (.804) overall record while leading BYU to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances. During his first season as head coach, Watson was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 25-4 record, the program’s best mark since 1998. In addition to leading BYU to the MWC regular-season title, Watson also helped lead the Cougars back to the NCAA Tournament. In 2007, he led the Cougars to a 24-8 overall record and an Elite 8 finish in the NCAA Regional Final. His team also finished the year ranked 12th nationally, and at one point through the season, the Cougars held a rank as high as ninth in the country. No stranger to the best competition, Watson’s teams have been ranked as high as eighth on RPI, showing the character and strength of the teams he builds. Never backing down from challenges are also another hallmark trait of Watson-led teams. Prior to his head-coaching debut, Watson had amassed 11 years as an assistant coach at four universities. After an All-American playing career at BYU, Watson coached for two years under his former coach, Carl McGown, before beginning his career in women’s volleyball with extremely successful stints at Kansas State, Arkansas State, and Montana State. Watson had an All-American playing career at BYU from 1990-1994, where he was a four-year starter and two-time captain. He graduated from BYU in 1995 with a degree in physical education and sports business management after leaving his native home of Homebush, Australia. He and his wife, Larissa, have two sons and a daughter.
