The Paris Agreement calls on us to take action for the climate. Each country that ratifies the agreement will be required to set targets for emission reduction and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Norway has set the target to reduce emission of 40 percent until 2030 compared to 1990. Germany has the goal to reduce emission of 40 percent until 2020 compared to 1990. As a long term goal, Norway and Germany want to become low-emission societies. To ensure the transition of societies, industries and economies to clean energy, governments develop national climate policies and policy instruments.

The German Energiewende and the Green Shift in Norway are the drivers for innovation, competitiveness and economic growth. In the years to come, we will see new technologi-cal solutions we do not know of yet. The energy system will transform to a digitalized and decentralized system and electrification may bring about restructuring in other sectors.

“The Paris Agreement – Risks and Opportunities for the Energy Sector” is the title of the 20th German Norwegian Energy Forum. From the very beginning of the German Norwegian Energy Forum, our mission has been to connect representatives from politics, science, institutions and businesses.

Over the years, the Forum has developed into a platform where Norwegian and German play-ers meet to identify business opportunities and how they can beneficially support each other through this market transformation.

Innovation Norway, the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin with actors from Norway and Germany will continue the work on creating a bilateral business network to strengthen the German Norwegian energy partnership for a sustainable and secure energy supply in Europe. Gerda Geyer
