Chapter 一 ISDN User Overview
Summary
This chapter focuses on the two rate interfaces of ISDN provided for users: BRA and
PRA.BRA (Basic Rate Access) consists of 2 B channels (64Kbps) and 1 D channel
(16kbps).PRA (Primary Rate Access) consists of 30 B channels (64Kbps) and 1 D channel
(64kbps).This text will describe the technical principal of the 2 user modes of ISDN. Please
refer to chapter 2 and chapter 3 for the data configuration of SS1B and here will not
mention it again.
一 .1 ISDN Description
ISDN is the abbreviation of “Integrated Service Digital Network” which is the digital data service
based on circuit switching, and it is used to provide enhanced voice and data service. In ISDN, the signal
transferred and processed is all digital signal, and the end-to-end digital connection is provided. Not
only the voice transmission service, which is same as that in current telephone network, is provided, but
also the integrated communication services: image, data and fax, etc are provided. The interfaces of
narrowband ISDN are divided into basic rate interface (BRI) 2B+D and primary rate interface (PRI)
30B+D.D channel is used to protect synchronization of user and ISDN switch, and to bear signaling for
establishing and releasing calls.
ISDN is mainly used in the following 4 parts:
Provide Internet service for family user. A standard ISDN BRI channel can reach the rate of
128 (64 x 2) Kbps.
Used as the terminal circuit of large-scale dialing access server. Connecting multiple dialing
users to an access server via ISDN circuit is a standard method.
Used for dialing backup. ISDN BRI and PRI circuits can all provide backup data channels for
route.
Used for voice and digital call services, including different ISDN supplementary services.
In version ZXSS10 SS1 V2.0.1.01, SS and gateway (M100 and MSAG) have provided the function
of accessing traditional ISDN 2B+D users, multiple functions of 2B+D users can be realized: basic call
function (the basic service types specified by all ITU-T Q.931, including voice, 3.1KHz and 64K digital
no limit), dial-up network access function, display type services (CLIP, CLIR, COLP and COLR), non
display type services (CFU, CFB and CFNR).The functions are completely up to Chinese National
Standard ― related content of YDN 034.3 and YDN 034.4, and the standard ITU-T Q.931 is also
referred.

一 .2 ISDN BRA User Application Specification
When the current SS provides BRA access service, the following devices and protocols are
included:
1. Softswitch Device
During the call supporting 2B+D, do not add additional hardware modules at SS side, only add or
modify software modules.
IUA adaptation module: it locates on SS and it is in charge of the communication between
LAPD module on gateway and DSS1 layer 3 on SS.
SCTP module: it transfers IUA protocol data reliably between gateway and SS.
Call control module: it is on SS and is in charge of BRA basic call flow control and
supplementary service call flow control.
H248 adapter module: it is in charge of interaction with SS, and it is used to transfer media
control commands to call control module in BRA access call procedure.
Database module: it describes 2B+D users and circuit logically, and describes services of
2B+D users, also it describes data of IUA protocol.
OMM: it provides 2B+D user configuration interface and 2B+D call O&M interface on SS.

Gateway (M100) is in SS system, all the terminal devices in traditional signaling network are
connected to the gateway, and the corresponding access devices are needed on the related gateways. In
order to support BRA access mode, the follows are needed on gateway:
2B+D digital subscriber line circuit (DSLC)
RTP resource board (DMV)
Voice resource board (ASIG)
Center process unit (MP)
Network Board (TNET)
Communication Board (COMM)
The software modules include:
IUA adaptation module: it locates on gateway and it is in charge of the communication
between LAPD module on gateway and DSS1 layer 3 on SS.
SCTP module: it transfers IUA protocol data reliably between gateway and SS.
LAPD module: it locates on 2B+D subscriber board on gateway, and it is responsible for
establishing a reliable signaling channel between gateway and ISDN terminal.
Media control module: it is in charge of detailed connections on gateway in BRA calls, and it
controls the functions of playback and media conversion.
H248 adapter module: it is in charge of interaction with SS, and it is used to transfer media
control commands to media control module in BRA access call procedure.
Drive module: it is the drive for 2B+D board and for other resource boards.
Database module: it describes 2B+D subscriber board physically and logically, and it
describes the data of IUA protocol.
OMM: it provides 2B+D user configuration interface and 2B+D call O&M interface on
gateway.
3. ISDN Terminal
ISDN terminal contains the functions of DSS1 signaling system from layer 1 to layer 3. Because
the application ranges are different, and the applications on the layers are different. Terminal is variable:
the interfaces of different terminals are same, such as ISDN telephone and PC telephone. Every BRA
port can be connected with multiple different ISDN terminals. The numbers and sub-addresses can be
configured on terminal to distinguish different terminals under one port. The 2 B channels can be used
separately, and they can also be bound together to be one channel of 128K (it is not provided
temporarily) when making different voice or data calls. The user’s dialup mode includes enbloc and
overlap. The number information is transferred via signaling channel.

一 .3 ISDN PRA User Application Specification
1. The following figure shows the application in SS:
Fig. 1.3-2 SS Application
2. Requirements of ISDN PRA User Mode
The user mode is configured in order to realize the PBX playback. Generally speaking, PBX will
play tones itself, but some PBX need switches to play tones, then if it is configured in trunk mode, the
dial tone and ring back tone, etc will not be played, but the call can be made normally. If it is configured
in user mode, then SS will indicate PBX to play basic tones for users.

For Caller ID Display Mode, select FROM Local SS, and it is lawful user.
For Start D-Channel No., it is negotiated by SS with M100 or MSAG, generally it starts from
100.
Special configuration, the number negotiated by customer and user, and it is used when the
numbers displayed is a lawful user number and does not contain caller ID authentication.
After the data configuration is finished, query the miscellaneous property of the number
from 6160000 to 6160099 in local office user data, and the ISDN flag will be found.
二 .8 Tidname Data Configuration
RTP resource configuration: it should be same as M100 of MSAG.

Chapter 三 Configuration of SS1b in PRA
User Mode
Summary
The configurations of gateway zone, data area, node and SCTP, etc are same as those in
BRA user mode, please refer to the configuration in BRA user mode, we only provide the
differences here.
三 .1 Adding User
Add user, the node is TG node, select Primary Group PRA User in Other Prop., as shown in the
following figure:
Fig. 3.1-14 Local Office User Configuration
三 .2 ISDN User Configuration
Add ISDN user in “Data Configuration->User Configuration->ISDN User Configuration”. Fill the
user number added in last step in start/end user number, select NO for BRA user, select a unused number
for D channel No., the D channel No. is similar to the trunk group No., the global D channel No. is set

by the switch in the network segment for all the D channels, and it is not required here. As shown in
figure:
Fig. 3.2-15 New ISDN User Configuration
Then add B channel in channel property, fill the number from 1 to 31 and the number is added
automatically. Please note there isn’t No.16 B channel, because No.16 B channel is used as the D
channel, and it supports signaling, so it is called 30B+D.

三 .3 Adding TID Resource Configuration
RTP resource is same as that in trunk configuration, and select 17-PRI 30B+D in stead of 1 for MG
resource type. The Group No. is D channel No., and the No. In Group is the Start No. of B channel. The
resource name is same as that of gateway is alright.

Fig. 3.3-18 New TIDNAME
So far, the PRA user data configuration on SS1b is finished.
三 .4 Other Notes
The default property and the trunk configurations are same.
If interconnected with 9000, 9000 will register as ROOT, then the wildcard should be
configured, but the current version does not support it (including version 40), the type 17
cannot be added, and it is useless if it is added in the background.
The users under PBX need Caller ID Display function, and the service registered is “Caller Line
ID Provide”.
If there are multiple users, only the first step of adding user is enough, and it is no need to add
ISDN user and add D channel for every user.
If PBX is calling party, the number displayed for the called party is not the number
configured on SS but the number configured on PBX.
