Information technology jobs are everywhere
What is information technology versus information systems? How is it created?
Where is it in your life? What companies make these products?
Think of some examples of unusual use of technology. What kind of jobs created these products?
Who uses technology at: A hardware store? A book publisher?

People, technology and decision-making work
together These are the key areas that we address during
the course: People in regular and IT jobs use and manage
systems The type of technology available affects jobs General business decisions and IT decisions
affect processes and the job alternatives that are open to us
Let’s look at each of these

People: users and IT Have a variety of skills and abilities: how do they vary
between a hardware store and a book publisher? Come from many cultural and educational
backgrounds Need to be involved in systems implementation to
ensure success Management style directly affects success of systems People contribute their knowledge during selection,
design, testing of systems

Technology jobs encompass hardware and software
Hardware: includes equipment as well as data communications lines and infrastructure for systems such as the world wide web
Software: includes many layers such as operating system level, data base management level and applications (functional) level
What type of education would you need to develop, maintain or use these systems?

People create their own jobs
What new web sites have you heard about? Have you heard of any new services? Started in late 2012, unroll.me is an email sorting
service Search on the web –
what is the average salary in Canada for a business analyst position?
Try: www.glassdoor.com as one ofyour sources.

Decision-making People at all levels, including management,
make choices about behaviours and processes These decisions create an organizational
environment that affects the work effectiveness The types of processes used also affect the
quality of information and the quality/success of information systems

Let’s do Practice Question #1:
Build Your Own Multinational Co. Answers will be posted after the classroom
sections are completed working on the problems. Dig out your phones or laptops – let’s take a look at
two of the sites that these business owners are using: http://www.elance.com and http://www.guru.com. Then, use the questions of the case answer sheet to
talk about the types of jobs the employees would be providing, stating the level of the organization

World-changing technology?
The UbiSlate was developed by DataWind, two Canadian brothers. It is sold around the world at low cost: see www.ubislate.com
Helping to prevent airline disasters was the mandate of the Canadian company Star Navigation,www.star-navigation.com). The company developed real-time, in-flight monitoring systems.
Using the terminology of CBIS, describe the components for each of these company’s products.

How are you going to study and practice?
Think about the information that we have talked about today so far, and what is available in your text
Gradually, we will be covering an increasing volume
How are you going to study? In groups of up to five people, share your study strategies. Pick a favourite and have one of your group members write it on the board

physical locations redesigning workflow to reduce costs and
increase efficiency

Effects of IT on employees and
society … Let’s split into groups of five people each: each group
should search online and find at least three technological solutions that support people with disabilities and allow them to become part of the workforce. For example, Lifeworks uses iPads to help some disabled persons play music and participate in the work force Lifeworks Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ov02_ATYeY
Technology Tic-Tac-Toe on the board. X team: provide positive impacts of technology on
employees and on society O team: provide negative impacts

Study tip #1 This study tip is a variation of an exercise of the same name found in “Pumping Ions: games and exercises
to flex your mind,” by Tom Wujec
-The purpose of this exercise is to engage a variety of senses: smell, touch, taste and vision. Remember the following: The smell and taste of what you had for breakfast on Sunday The last time you went swimming (or had a bath/shower) and
how the water felt The first day of the previous course that you took. Visually look
around in your memory. What is the quality of your memory? How can you use these
senses to help you study for this course? Practice this exercise with something different every day.
