In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, Corpus Christi Parish will be temporarily implementing the following measures in compliance with the social/physical distancing mandate of the government:

1. The Parish Office will be conducting business at reduced working hours from 8:30am to 1:00pm and will only be thru phone (604-324-2265) and/or via email ([email protected]). No walk-in inquiries, please.

2. The Adoration Chapel will remain open, however, we will limit the number of people inside at any one time – only 2 people will be allowed in for a maximum stay of 45 minutes. Please leave after your time to make room for others.

3. All Baptism Preparation classes are cancelled until further notice.

4. All Baptisms are likewise cancelled until further notice.

5. Conferment of the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion this year are postponed until further notice.

6. Bulletins, announcements and updates will be sent by email thru Flocknote. Email the parish office to get connected.

We are here to serve and we will do the best we can in order to assist you during these difficult times. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Stewardship Reflections

“Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believe you

will see the glory of God?” (John 11:40)

Many of us say that we believe in God. We go to church on Sunday. We volunteer for events at our parish. But when life gets hard and the pressure is on, when things aren’t

going our way, do we really believe and put our trust in the Lord? When we live a life of gratitude, being thankful for the

gifts we have been given, we really do see that God is providing all that we need. It opens our hearts to see God’s

active presence in our daily lives.

5th Sunday of Lent

Next Sunday begins Passiontide - two weeks before the Good Easter. The crucifix and statues will be

shrouded in purple this coming Saturday. I don’t know what will happen with regards Holy Week and Easter, so

we will just have to wait and see. In the meantime we should all be praying, for our health care workers, our

researchers, our political leaders, first responders and ourselves.

It is very important during these times to try and establish, and keep a schedule in one’s life and one’s

household/apartment/condominium. No one knows how long this Coronavirus will be around, but we can

establish a “way of living” that is necessary for us. We human beings need schedules in whatever form they

might take, we need routines and routines are good as long as we do not fall into a “rut”, or become mindless in

the way we keep, or live out, our routines.

I took the following from the Navy Seals: discipline = freedom. This is a good moto to live by for

physical, social, psychological, mental and spiritual health, especially, but not only, during these times. I will

give some suggestions, and that is all that they are as each person is free to do as they think necessary. All I

know is that these things help me a lot! I’ve learned them from others, and admittedly there are just part of who

I am:

1) Try to go to bed and get up at the same time. Don’t change this too much. Sleep is one of our most

important assets and we need to be as structured in sleep patterns as possible.

2) Be very conscious of eating healthy. I’m not one to completely avoid “junk food”, but not too much.

In my opinion we need these “breaks”, but not too many!

3) While at home, establish a routine, a schedule that will help and benefit you, your family, and your

children.

4) Avoid – AVOID – too much TV. Try to leave it off during the day.

5) Make time slots in your schedule to pray: read the New Testament 3 minutes a day. You can also

download the Living with Christ app from the app store (Apple, but I think it is also available for

Android). This gives you the daily readings for Mass.

6) Try spending 15 minutes a day in quite prayer, or meditation, and then consider 30 minutes. Don’t

be put off, or get discouraged if you suffer distractions, as it’s our life to battle distractions.

7) Try to begin reading good books! I know everyone is not a reader, but there are different ways to do

this. Searching for good articles is one alternative. If you haven’t read in a while try 15 minutes.

Take a five minute break and then resume reading. One book that I am reading now, it’s not

religious, is Deep Work by Cal Newport. It may not be everyone’s kind of book, but there is a lot of

good material in it, like how to remain focused in a distracted world.

8) One more: use creativity with the children - arts and crafts, board games, even cards. I remember

these when I was young.

Ok, enough for now. I hope this at least gives some suggestions as to the possibilities that are available

to people and they don’t cost a lot. There is much more and I will try to mention those as time goes on.

If you did not know, there is a BC COVID 19 app in the Apple store and I’m sure it’s on Android

as well. It is a great resource.

Prayer to Mary 1 O Mary,

you always shine on our path

as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the

Sick,

who at the Cross shared in Jesus’ pain,

keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of your People,

and Queen of the Holy Rosary

know what we need,

and we have faith that you will protect us

so that, as at Cana of Galilee,

we may return to joy and feasting

after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father

and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who has taken upon himself our sufferings

and carried our sorrows

to lead us, through the Cross,

to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our hour of

need, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin Mary. Amen.

How to Gain a Plenary Indulgence During the Coronavirus Pandemic, According to the Vatican

The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary announced an opportunity for a plenary indulgence during the current coronavirus pan-demic.

According to the decree, “the gift of special Indulgences is granted to the faithful suffering from COVID-19 disease, com-monly known as Coronavirus, as well as to health care workers, family members, and all those who in any capacity, in-cluding through prayer, care for them.”

A Plenary indulgence removes all temporal punishment due to sin, but one must have “a spirit detached from any sin” for it to completely apply.

The faithful who qualify for a plenary indulgence during the coronavirus pandemic:

Those suffering from the coronavirus illness Those ordered to quarantine themselves due to the virus Health care workers, family members, and others caring for those with the coronavirus (exposing themselves to conta-

gion)

Do at least one of the following:

Unite yourself spiritually through the media in the celebration of the Holy Mass Recite the Rosary Pious practice of the Way of the Cross (or other forms of devotion) Recite the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and “a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of

faith in God and charity towards their brothers and sisters.”

Also must perform all of the following as soon as possible: (considered the three usual condi-tions for a plenary indulgence)

Sacramental Confession Eucharistic communion Pray for the Pope’s intentions

The faithful not suffering from the coronavirus can: “Implore the Almighty God for the end of the epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted, and eternal salvation for those whom the Lord has called to Himself.”

In addition to the usual conditions mentioned above for a plenary indulgence, do at least one of the following: Visit the Blessed Sacrament or go to Eucharistic adoration Read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour Recite Holy Rosary Pious exercise of the Way of the Cross Recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Plenary indulgence for those unable to receive Anointing of the Sick: The decree adds that “the Church prays for those who find themselves unable to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and of the Viaticum, entrusting each and every one to divine Mercy by virtue of the communion of saints and granting the faithful a Plenary Indulgence on the point of death, provided that they are duly disposed and have recited a few prayers during their lifetime (in this case the Church makes up for the three usual conditions required). For the attainment of this indulgence the use of the crucifix or the cross is recommended.”

Pray for an end to the coronavirus pandemic and all suffering from the coronavirus!
