Preparing to Quit Smoking

TRENDSCigarette smoking remained a major health concern over the review period, with the government further regulating cigarettes sales in India. As such, these movements benefited sales of NRT, the only category present in smoking cessation aids in the country.

According to International Countries & Consumers data, smoking prevalence in India is set to fall from 11.9% in 2009 to 11.5% in 2020, with an increasing number of smokers trying to kick the habit.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPEJohnson & Johnson retained its outright lead in the category in 2016, holding a 52% value share, down from 57% in the previous year. Although the company continued to benefit from its first mover advantage, much of its share decline was to the benefit of “others” in the category.

OPPORTUNITY THREATS 1. There are millions tobacco users & they smoke and use tobacco in other forms like chewing tobacco. This large size of cigarette users also results in large number of health issues and in turn large number of people who want to quit smoking.2. The de marketing of cigarettes by government and NGOs also increase the number of wannabe quitters.

1. Pharma products are subject to stringent legal regulations; any mistake in adherence to quality etc. can have strong implications. 2. The acceptance of product in Indian markets would depend on cultural and social norms also. In some regions, smoking is a part of the culture itself and people might not readily accept the product.
