Air Connectivity & Airport Competitiveness
What drives air transport? One of the key drivers of air transport is air connectivity.
By facilitating seamless movement of people, goods, and services, air connectivity
serves as a catalyst for regional and national economic growth. Moreover, the
importance of connectivity in global economy is widely recognized.
Then what is the role of airports as vital providers of air connectivity? And what
more can airports do to enhance air connectivity? In this session, we will discuss
the changing patterns of air connectivity and explore how it can be improved,
serving as a momentum for continuous growth of airports.
항공네트워크 확대와 공항 경쟁력
무엇이 항공수송의 발전을 가능하게 하는가? 많은 사람들이 그 핵심 요인으로 ‘Air Connectivity
(연결성/항공네트워크)’를 지목한다. ‘연결성’이 사람과 상품, 서비스의 이동을 가능하게 할 뿐만
아니라, 지역과 국가 경제 발전에 중요한 촉매제 역할을 하고 있기 때문이다. 이와 같은 ‘연결성’의
중요성에 대한 인식이 나날이 확산되고 있다.
그렇다면 과연 ‘연결성’의 핵심 제공자로서 공항의 역할은 무엇일까? 그리고 공항은 어떻게
연결성을 확대 할 수 있을까? 이번 세션에서는 최근의 변화하는 ‘연결성’의 추세에 대해서 논의
하고, 연결성 확대를 통해 어떻게 공항의 지속 성장을 가속화할 수 있을지 고민해보고자 한다.

It has been more than 100 years since the first commercial flight took place. For
the past century, aviation has continued to evolve both in terms of quantity and
quality. The surge in air travel inevitably led to the advent of mega-hub airports
around the globe. What will the global mega-hubs of tomorrow look like?
Smooth airport operation involves not only airport operators but also requires
collaborative effort among many stakeholders. In this session, we will discuss
with various stakeholders who are integral to airport operations and explore their
roles in the process of building an ideal mega-hub.
메가허브공항 도약과 이해관계자의 역할
민간 항공의 역사도 100년이 되었다. 지난 100년 동안 항공 산업은 양적, 질적으로 눈부신 성장을
이뤄냈으며, 최근의 항공 수요는 전례 없이 빠른 속도로 증가하는 추세이다. 이에 따라 세계 곳곳
에서는 대형 규모의 ‘메가 허브 공항’의 성장이 두드러지고 있다. 그렇다면 미래의 글로벌 메가허브는
과연 어떤 모습일까?
공항산업은 무엇보다 이해관계자들 간의 협업이 중요한 비즈니스이다. 이번 세션에서는 이러한
공항산업의 특성을 반영하여 항공사, 정부기관 등 다양한 이해관계자들과 함께 성공적인 메가

Aviation Demand & Capacity Expansion
Due to low oil prices and the growth of low-cost carriers, we are witnessing
an unprecedented growth in aviation demand. In the Asia-Pacific region alone,
approximately 1.1 billion people used air travel in 2014, which is more than a
twofold increase in a mere decade. The surge in demand has caused major
airports to face similar challenges – capacity constraints of existing facilities –
and they are looking for solutions in airport expansion/construction and capacity
optimization.
How can we ensure successful application of these solutions? In this session,
we will discuss effective solutions for airport capacity constraints and look into
various efforts made by airports to respond to the rapidly changing environment.
항공수요와 공항 확장
저유가, LCC 운항 확대에 힘입어 항공 이용객 수가 빠르게 늘고 있다. 아태지역의 경우 2014년
항공 이용객 수는 약 11억 명으로, 5억 명이었던 2004년과 비교해 2배 넘게 급증했다. 이와
같이 급격한 수요증가는 주요 공항들에게 ‘여객 수용능력 포화’라는 새로운 도전과제를 안겨
주었다. 그리고 공항들은 시설 확장/건설과 수용능력 최적화 등에서 그 해결책을 찾고 있다.
그렇다면 어떻게 성공적인 시설확장을 할 수 있을 것인가? 이번 세션에서는 수용능력 확보를
위한 효과적인 해결책에 대해 논의하고, 미래 항공시장 선점과 공항운영 환경에 적극적으로
대응하기 위한 공항들의 다양한 노력에 대해 알아볼 것이다.

the era of Industry 4.0, which opened the doors to all kinds of ICT-integrated
innovations in various industries. The airport industry also expects ICT to play a

Developing Airport Cities & Driving Economic Growth
Airports around the world are expanding beyond their horizons. Airports are no
longer perceived as mere transport facilities as they are capitalizing on airport
resources to generate new aviation/tourism demand and contribute billions of
dollars to the global GDP. In other words, airports are transforming into airport
cities, which encompass tourism, culture, MICE and logistics. Airport cities will be
the focal points and growth engines of national economies, representing a whole
new paradigm of future airports.
Then what are some key components needed to actualize ideal airport cities? In
this session, we will share experiences to seek the best way forward for airport
cities and gain insights on successful airport city/aerotropolis development.
공항복합도시 개발과 경제성장
세계 공항들이 기존의 영역을 뛰어넘어 다양한 영역으로 그 기능을 확장하고 있다. 단순히 항공
운송 기능에 국한 되지 않고 스스로의 자원을 활용하여 신규 항공/관광 수요를 창출하고, 경제성장
거점으로 발돋움하기 위한 적극적인 노력에 나선 것이다. 다시 말해 이제 공항은 항공에 관광,
문화, 마이스, 물류를 결합한 ‘공항복합도시’로 변모하고 있다. 그리고 이 공항복합도시는 향후
국가경제의 성장엔진이자 거점으로서 미래공항의 새로운 패러다임을 제시할 것으로 기대된다.
그렇다면 성공적인 ‘공항복합도시’ 구현을 위한 필수요소는 무엇일까? 이번 세션에서는 다양한
개발 사례와 경험 공유를 통해 공항복합도시에 대한 이해를 제고하고, 최적의 공항복합도시
구현 방안을 도출하고자 한다.
