Your InterRail Pass is your personal ticket to a world o discovery in 30

diferent countries. Theres no better way to experience Europe than by

rail, whether using quaint local trains, convenient Intercity services orsuper-ast TGVs. Theres so much stunning scenery to admire rom the

provides inormation on how to use the pass, on how to understand

Validity o the InterRail Global Pass

Where is my InterRail Global Pass valid?

An InterRail Global pass is valid on the national railways and shipping

lines listed in the InterRail ticket cover. Furthermore, it is valid on

various private railways (see page 13 and urther). Please note that itis not valid or ree travel in your country o residence.

Travel in the country where you live

Your InterRail Pass is not valid or ree travel in your country o

residence. However (with the exception o Great Britain), you

are entitled to get discounted tickets to or rom the border on

presentation o your InterRail Pass. This discount is only obtainable

in your home country, so please purchase tickets at your local train

station beore your journey commences. The discount varies romcountry to country (details at www.InterRailnet.com).

Travel documents

Check your pass careully to ensure all your personal details are

correct. Should there be any mistakes, it is imperative to take it

back to the point-o-purchase. During your travels, your pass is like

cash guard it accordingly! InterRail does not grant any reund

or lost, stolen or partially used passes. Travel insurance is highly

recommended.

Reservations

Although your InterRail Pass gives you access to rail

travel in the participating countries, certain trains such

as high-speed, international and night trains usually

require you to reserve a seat and pay an extra ee. Seats

on such trains can be in high demand, especially during

the summer holiday months o July and August. Note

also that the number o seats allocated to InterRail Pass

holders can be limited. To avoid disappointment, advance

booking is strongly recommended. Most trains can be

booked up to 3 months in advance. Please note, when

seats or pass holders have been sold out you may have to

purchase a ull are ticket or travel on a diferent day or at

a diferent time.

How to use your InterRail Global Pass

When can I start?

You can start your rst trip anytime ater 00.00 hours on the rst

day your pass is valid. You must nish your last trip by midnight

(24.00 hours) on the last day o validity.

Record your journeys

Inside your InterRail Global Pass cover you will nd a old-out Travel

Report and Questionnaire. You are required to ll in (in blue or black

ink) the details o each journey you take on the Travel Report beore

boarding your train. Ticket inspectors will ask to see this document

during your travels and you can be ned up to EUR 50 i your Travel

Report is incomplete.

We hope youll take time to send us your completed Travel Report &

Questionnaire ater you nished travelling. I you do, well send you a

great InterRail souvenir (see page 27 or details).

How oten can I travel?

The number o days on which you can travel depends on whether it

is a Flexi pass or a Continuous pass. InterRail Global Passes valid

or 22 days or 1 month are Continuous passes. InterRail Global Passes

valid or 5 or 10 days within a longer period o time are exi passes.

Flexi Passes can only be used or a certain number o travel

days within a set period. I you have a exi pass, a travel calendar

will be printed on your ticket.

Continuous Passes can be used unlimited (every day) during theperiod in which the pass is valid.

and type o train, as well as the date o purchase and/or travel.

** In case seats or InterRail Pass holders are sold out, you may be asked

to buy a normal ticket. I this happens you could always consider taking

a diferent train, or travelling on a diferent date.

Quality trains that ofer special amenities (such as sleepers) or which

are aster than conventional trains, oten require a reservation at

extra cost. The surcharge or this includes the compulsory seat

reservation and sometimes also either a meal aboard the train or

other perks. For an overview o trains that require a reservation

please see the table on the reverse o the InterRail map.

Filling in the Travel Calendar

When travelling with a exi pass it is important that you record the

date o each journey in the Travel Calendar (printed on the pass). You

must write in ink and its imperative to do this beore boarding the

train. Not doing so is the same as travelling without a ticket, which

means you risk a hety fne. The month should be written below theday; i.e. 18th October is18

10(see example). Be very careul flling in the

date. I you make a mistake you cannot correct it as this could be

interpreted as raud. I you make a mistake you will have to enter the

correct date in the next travel day box and consequently lose a travel

day.

Travelling by night train

For passes with exible travel days there are 2 possibilities or

travelling by night train:

1. In the event that your train departs beore 19.00 hours, you need

to use 2 travel days (ll in the day o departure and the day o

arrival)

or

2. I youre travelling on a direct night train or boat that departs

ater 19.00 hours, you may take advantage o a special rule which

allows you to use just one o your travel days. I your rst trip o

the day is on a direct overnight train departing ater 19:00 hours,

enter the ollowing days date (i.e. the date o arrival) in the calen-

dar box. For example: i, on 2nd August, you take the direct night

train rom Prague to Budapest departing at 21.53 hours; you only

have to ll out 3rd August in the travel calendar. When travelling

by night boat (Superast or Blue star Ferries) you can ll in either

the day o departure or the day o arrival. Please note that you

cannot start travelling beore the rst day o validity on your pass.

Train reservations and additional costs

To ensure you have a seat, it is possible to make a reservation or

most trains. For certain European trains, such as the high-speed,

international or night trains, reservations are compulsory. To nd out

whether reservations are compulsory, check an online timetable, orenquire with your travel agent or at a railway station.

On some trains the number o seats available or InterRail Pass

holders may be limited (reservation is subject to availability), so you

should make reservations as early as possible.** Reservations can be

made at most major train stations. The costs or a reservation are not

included in your pass and can vary widely depending on the country

What to expect while travelling

1st or 2nd class on the train

Depending on your type o InterRail Pass, you are allowed to travel

in either 1st or 2nd class. I you have a 1st class pass, you are not

entitled to a reund i you travel 2nd class. In order to travel in 1stclass with a 2nd class pass, you must pay the diference in are. Please

note that some trains do not have 1st class cars, and on ships there is

generally no class distinction.

Will there be ood on board?

Many long-distance trains have ull-service restaurant cars ofering

breakast, lunch and dinner. Bufet and bar cars sell light meals

throughout the trip, and vendors with ood trolleys oten pass

through the train selling beverages and snacks. Enquire at the station

whether the train you want to take has a bufet or restaurant car.

Trains in Europe

There is a diverse range o train types in Europe, each

ofering a unique and interesting travel experience.

High-speed trainsWant to get there really ast? How does up to 300 kph sound?

Many high-speed services criss-cross Europe, all ofering comortable

1st and 2nd class cars and catering.

Other day trains

There is also a ull schedule o domestic and international trains run-

ning at regular speed that can get you to your destination quickly.

These are generally called Intercity (IC) or EuroCity (EC) trains. Others,

such as Direct, Interregio or Express trains, make more requent stops

along the way.

Legendary scenic rail lines

Shimmering lakes, plunging gorges, snow-capped mountains,

coastal splendours Europe abounds with picturesque, back-

country routes that boast breathtaking scenery. Try the line between

Perpignan and La Tour de Carol in France or Italys Ventimiglia to

Cuneo train. There are also legendary tourist lines that dot Europes

landscape. InterRail Passes are accepted on many o these trains or

entitle you to a discount.

Night trains

arriving at your destination the next morning relaxed, rereshed

and ready or a day o sightseeing. Night trains serve Europes

major cities and ofer a variety o sleeping accommodations. Most

overnight trains ofer either sleepers or couchettes, and some also

ofer seats. Prices vary according to the amount o comort and

privacy. I youre on a budget, consider a couchette (rom 15 to 69) or a seat (rom 5). Couchettes are mixed compartments

(men and women together), with our open bunks in 1st class and

our or six open bunks in 2nd class. A sheet, blanket and pillow are

provided, but be prepared to sleep in your day clothes. Seats are

available on selected trains, and are generally only available in

2nd class.

For maximum comort and privacy, reserve a 1st (one or two

passengers) or 2nd class (two or three passengers) compartment.

These compartments usually have a wash basin. Toilet acilities can

be ound down the corridor. The costs or sleepers is, o course,higher (rom 30 to 197).

Train Station Smarts & Tips

Check your station!

Many larger cities have multiple train stations, and trains do not

always stop at them all. Double check exactly which station you

need to depart rom so you dont miss your train. I there is a specicstation in a city you want to arrive at, also check that the train youre

taking does stop there.

Train schedule and platorm inormation

Most European railways have a website where you can consult

train schedules and platorm inormation. The website

www.railpassenger.ino/ also ofers a lot o inormation that can

help you plan your journey.

Baggage

Most major railway stations have baggage carts, let-luggage o ces

or coin-operated lockers or storage o your luggage. Aboard the

train, luggage racks are ound above seats or at the end o the car,

but do keep an eye on your baggage as the railway is not responsible

or lost or stolen bags.

Getting on, o and seating on trains

Youve checked the schedule and know the departure track, now

youre ready to board! I youve made a reservation, youll nd the car

and seat number printed on the ticket. Displays on platorms at some

stations show the composition o long-distance and overnight trains,

and indicate where your car will stop on the platorm. Be ready to

board the train the minute it arrives; station stops are oten very short.

You can see i a car is 1st or 2nd class by the numbers posted near the

trains door or on a window (some trains have both classes in one car).

Pay close attention to destination displays and/or car numbers near

the door. Trains can be split and sent in diferent directions, so make

sure the car youre in is going where you want to go.

Are we there yet?

Station stops arent always announced, or may be announced in a

oreign language you dont understand. Take note o your scheduled

arrival time and the names o the last stations beore your stop so

youll be prepared to exit the train when it arrives at your destination.

Station names are clearly visible at platorms.

Dream on

On night trains, customs and passport checks are oten conducted

while you are sleeping, so it is common practice or the car

attendant to collect your InterRail Pass and passport (or travel ID)

or border ormalities. The documents will be returned to you in the

morning and you will enjoy an uninterrupted nights sleep.
