    O que são “Phrasal Verbs”?

    Um "phrasal verb" é a combinação de um verbo com uma partícula (que normalmente é

    uma ou duas preposições). Mudando esta partícula, o significado normal do verbo muda.

    Por exemplo, você tem o verbo "go", que normalmente significa "ir". Juntando-o com

    "down”, significa “descer”. Já o “phrasal verb”, "to go down with" significa "ficar

    doente/pegar alguma doença”.

    Existe uma infinidade de “phrasal verbs”. Quanto mais a pessoa ler em inglês, mais fácil fica

    reconhecer o significado destes verbos. Memorizar l istas pouco adianta, o melhor mesmo é

    ver os verbos num contexto.

    Um detalhe importante sobre os “phrasal verbs” é que alguns deles são separáveis, ou seja,

    você pode colocar o objeto direto/indireto entre o verbo e a partícula. Outros são

    inseparáveis. Como saber qual é qual? Estudando-os! Não tem jeito! Por isso criei este l ivro

    ALLOW FOR: estar preparado(a)para Ex: Airplane passengers should allow for delays at the check-in counter.

    (Passageiros de avião devem estar preparados para demoras na fila de embarque.)

    APPLY FOR: candidatar-se Ex: He wants to apply for the job.

    (Ele quer se candidatar ao emprego.)

    APPROVE OF: aprovar algo Ex: My mom doesn't approve of me arriving home after midnight.

    ASK AFTER: perguntar por

    Ex: Elen was asking after you. I told her you were fine. (A Elen perguntou de você. Eu disse para ela que você estava bem.)

    ASK AROUND: pedir/perguntar por informações ou ajuda para pessoas

    Ex: I asked around to see if anyone knew someone who could translate it for me. (Eu perguntei para várias pessoas se alguém podia traduzir i sto para mim. )

    ASK FOR (1): pedir por algo Ex: I asked for the fish and chips but you have brought me only chips

    (Eu pedi por peixe com batatas, mas você só trouxe batatas (*Comida comum na Inglaterra).

    ASK FOR (2): pedir por (de uma forma irônica)

    Ex: Walking around the streets alone at midnight was asking for trouble. (Caminhar pela rua sozinha a meia-noite foi pedir por encrenca)

    ASK FOR SOMEONE: pedir para falar com alguém Ex: If you need anything, ask for Anna. She'll be able to help you. (Se você precisar de a lgo, peça pela Carol. Ela poderá te a judar.)

    ASK SOMEONE IN: convidar para entrar

    Ex: I was passing by when he ask me in for a drink. (Eu estava passando quando ele me convidou para entrar e beber a lgo.)

    ASK OUT: convidar para sair.

    Ex: We often ask our friends out for a drink in a nice bar downtown. (Nós sempre convidamos nossos amigos para uma bebida em um bar legal no centro.)

    ASK OVER: convidar para uma visita. Ex: She asked me over to see what they had done in the house and in the garden.
