Whatlinkstheart-worksandmanyoftheobjectsinthiscatalogue

is thehighqualityof theirmaking. Mixingup traditional fine

art materials and concepts with industrial art materials and

methods, it is apparent that traditional painting practice and

photography sits comfortably alongside cast-glass, sculpture,

Many works are constructed by artisans with a shared

understanding of materials. They are makers of artworks who

sculpt, photograph, collage, construct and print; running the

WEARABLE OBjECTSOften described as being driven by passion, love or addiction,

the concept of collecting art, design, jewellery, objects and

furniture is an interesting and varied phenomenon. The

wearable object section of the contemporary catalogue is

intended to showcase this exciting area of practice and further

promote local talent to a wider audience of collectors. New

Zealand has an extraordinary range of contemporary artists

and object makers. The wearable objects in this catalogue have

been created by artists with longstanding careers or training in

the industry, who are currently creating pieces that challenge

and offer diversity across their individual disciplines.

JESSICAPEARLESS

An extensive offering of rare, period furniture from the

celebrated 1950s designers Charles and Ray Eames will be a

certain highlight for collectors of genuine vintage classics.

Widely recognised contributors to industrial, furniture and

graphic design, contemporary art, film and architecture, the

Eames’ partnership created signature trends. However, of all

theirproductsandprojects,itmaybethecelebrated‘Nos.670

extensively manufactured of all the Eames designs. Designed

in1956,the‘LoungeChairandOttoman’wastheEames’most

constructionally complex chair and their first design for the

luxuryendofthemarket.

The sale also includes six vintage ‘Aluminium Group’ EA

105 chairs in teal (lot 50), and a set of four vintage hopsack

‘Aluminium Group’ EA435 chairs with a later board-table (lot

Bethunes@Webb’s final Rare Book

sale for 2008 will include the classic

New Zealand book collection of James

Brydon Speedy (1891 – 1961) and his

son, Tom Speedy.

The library was uncovered when Miriam

Shaw visited Palmerston North to meet

the wife of Tom Speedy. The books

collected by Tom and his father had

been hidden away in the hallway of an

uninhabited house on the family land.

It was estimated that the last time

anyone had viewed the books was 35

years earlier. The collection specialises

in Maori histories and ethnology,

boasting many quintessential New

Zealand books including Buller’s Birds,

a complete set of White’s Ancient

History of the Maori, and Robley’s

Moko to name a few.

Peering out from the shelves were two

stuffed kiwi in beautiful condition. Both

father and son were deeply involved in

the Polynesian Society, and the house

had hosted monthly discussion groups.

Mrs Speedy recalls providing well-

received suppers at these occasions.

Tom passed away in September

and the family has decided to auction

the collection. As the majority of the

books had been bought from Bethunes

Rare Book Auctions in its early days,

it seemed right that Bethunes@Webb’s

should handle the sale.

Catalogue online late October.

‘I consider making jewellery as an exercise in building or growing objects and using a process-based method of making, economy of construction is of primary concern. Working mainly with metal, the outcome of the object inextricably connects with how it is constructed. Landscapes and forms in the natural world such as crystals, rocks and minerals are of great interest to me and therefore inform my work. Man made influences such as architecture and machinery from my city surroundings also appear, from time to time, as I experiment with scale, structure and surface treatments.’

Anna Wallis has been making jewellery since 1993 and constructs all her work by hand specialising in complex soldiering exercises. She has exhibited widely in New Zealand and Australia. www.fingers.co.nz

40 TONY DE LAUTOUR + - oil on canvas, signed and

dated 2004. 2200mm x 3080mm $35,000 - $45,000

“+ – is a huge canvas, black and slick. Painted mountains,

soft and animal-like in their steep curves and dark dips, are

seen through the forms of the simple plus and minus signs

of classroom maths, of economic cost-benefit analysis. It

could easily illustrate the current splitting up of the South

Island high country, the selling of prominent lands, the

marketing of the New Zealand landscape.” Sally Blundell,

Prole Art Threat (New Zealand Listener, 23 October 2004,

pp. 38–41)

+ – comes within the context of a series of paintings

de Lautour began to produce around 2002 featuring

symbols omnipotent within the high-capitalist, logo-laden

landscape of the early 2000s. As Sally Blundell describes

(ibid.), the symbol of + – is open to interpretation. From

her analyses, however, what becomes apparent is the

existence, within the world, of an invisible balancing

act, a natural order whereby something being added is

invariably – and somewhat paradoxically – contingent with

something being lost.

Adding to the dictionary of possibilities already

discussed, it could be suggested that + – represents

the combination of + and – which forms a battery

charge, thus making it a very literal logo for power.

This aligns it with other, more lucid examples from

the series such as the Nike tick, the @ symbol,

and the McDonald’s M (seen in Webb’s May 2008

Contemporary Art sale) which allude to those who

hold power in our socio-economic landscape.

“These ‘copywrite (sic) paintings’ are yet another

reflection on the looted arcadia – and the

commodification of art” Andrew Paul Wood,

Dark Paradise: Notes on the Paintings of Tony

de Lautour (Art New Zealand, Issue 105, Summer

2002–03, p. 65)

Within its formation, the landscape is idealised

and regulated, and conforms to the bounds of

its outward appearance, its literary, symbolic,

message. It floats like an artificial beacon for what

it attempts to market – similar to tourist images

of New Zealand which represent a simplified,

idealised and somewhat cartoon-like version

of this rugged and wild, pillaged and pimped,

culturally confused little island. It looks not like

a natural land but a surreal exercise in corporate

control – terrain that has been mapped and tamed

cartographically, heightened by the ambiguous

numerical references which Blundell attributes to

the page reference numbers from the atlas that

was used” (ibid).

Employing de Lautour’s signature white paint,

the work has a strongly graphic quality. There is

a gothic sensibility to the severe contrast of the

vacuous black void behind the floating ciphers;

it is like a black sea, a dead sea, a dark abyss of

the unknown. The islands could be the post-

apocalyptic iron relics of civilisation in outer space,

all that is left when the world has combusted

under its own super-capitalism: dispassionate,

otherworldly totems floating within the sublime

infinity of the cosmos. IMOGEN KERR

ChAIR FOR FLORENCE KNOLL This early model is distinguished

war, limited numbers of the Barcelona chair were hand produced for

Florence Knoll. This example is circa 1950 and was produced prior to

Knoll gaining licence in 1953.

44 A TRUBRIDGE STUDIO ‘BODY RAFT’ a rocking

chaise lounge constructed with American ash. 2001. One

of the first ten made by David Trubridge at Cicada Studios,

New Zealand for Cappellini. $12,000 - $14,000

Body Raft is one of Trubridge’s most celebrated

designs. Originally designed in 1998 for a New

Zealand national exhibition, ‘Furniture in Context’

for the Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust, a second version

of the Body Raft was shown at Salone Satellite,

Milan Furniture Fair, 2001, where Italian firm

Cappellini purchased the design for manufacture.

This particular piece was made in the winter of 2001

and is one of the first ten Body Raft’s made by David

Trubridge at his Cicada Studios in Hastings, New

Zealand. Accompanied by a letter from Trubridge

to this effect, and with only one previous owner, it

has an impeccable provenance.

Trubridge’s background in boat design and his

interest in yacht hull construction influenced the

designs of two static chaise lounges, Argo and

Ra, both of which predate Body Raft. From these,

Trubridge developed Body Raft which, unlike its

predecessors, rests on a curved base so that it can

be rocked backwards and forwards. It resembles

both a hammock, with all its associations of

comfort and rest, and a traditional Polynesian

moriori waka puhara (reef canoe). In all three

designs he experimented with applying cold-

moulding techniques to achieve lightness, strength

and stability.

Body Raft is constructed from steam-bent American

ash and Australian hoop pine plywood with stainless

steel screws. The timber is bent with steam to create

a frame to which further curved lathes are attached.

It can be used indoors or out, as the timber is left

natural and in an unfinished state.

This simple contemporary chaise, an unconventional

take on traditional forms, is an elegant sculptural

design, echoing a Pacific ethos and resonating with

exceptional technical skill.

In 2007, David Trubridge was awarded New

Zealand’s highest design recognition, the BeST

Design, John Britten Award - the most prodigious

recognition given by the Designers Institute of New

Zealand to an outstanding individual for leadership,

vision and achievement both in New Zealand and

internationally. JONATHAN ORGAN

45 A TRUBRIDGE STUDIO ‘BOMBAY SAPPhIRE LIGhT’

BY DAVID TRUBRIDGE constructed of hand finished poly-

carbonate. 2008. L.5700mm. W.2200mm. $20,000 - $30,000

Commissioned this year by the 42 Below Group

for the ‘Botanical Bar’ project, a short run interior

and marketing concept, this work is one of David

Trubridge’s most significant commissions to date.

The elegant form extends concepts developed for

Trubridge’s Spiral Islands installation, created for

the Milan Furniture fair, Zona Tortona, 2008 which

referenced the natural forms of clouds and their

relationship and correlation to island mass and

ancient navigation.

Two interlocking concentric spirals work to map the

curvilinear forms found, both at once in geographical

landscapes and delicate ariel formations. The scale,

spiraling repeated patterns and luminosity combined

in the work, evokes a sense of place, especially for the

island viewer.

Made from flat sheet polycarbonate, the technical

form is fastened with rivets to create a single mass

which in itself is impressively tensioned through its

own constructions. Hand-sanded the work creates

a semi-transparent, and warmly frosted aesthetic.

Trubridge takes an environmentally conscious approach to the production of his work and the polycarbonates employed are all recyclable. Production by-products

are also methodically recycled by Trubridge. The light

sources are low energy fluorescent tubes, which when

viewed through the hand finished surface, generate a

strong even glow. When commenting on his role as an

designer, Trubridge states “The waters that are parted

by a sailing boat’s passage come together in its wake

and leaves no trace of its passing. I would like to live

like this and yet I see a trail of litter behind me and an

irreversible change on the planet.”1

Achieving extensive international and local

representation and recognition, Trubridge is broadly

recognised as one of New Zealand’s exceptional,

inspired and leading designers. JONATHAN ORGAN

Southern Cross Gallery 1989. Subtitled Fruit Whip, flooortiles (sic)

on particleboard and photocopies, epoxy resin and fibreglass cloth

on wallpaper (Unit I) 1989 on original artist’s label affixed verso.

Since the 1980s Merylyn Tweedie has gone through various

changes of persona, an indication of her wish to avoid becoming

a commodified name and to put the emphasis on her art. She is

currently known as a member of the art-making co-operative et

al. Her work during the period 1986 – 1990 was concerned with

feminist issues.

The Fruit Whip Set is one of a number of similar pieces examining

elements of women’s lives in the 1950s. As we all now know (or

are obliged to believe) women in that period were expected

by the conventions of society to stay at home and look after

hearth, husband and family. The artist evokes the kitchen

by the use of the background floor tiles, and the perceived

pressures to conform emerge from fragments of Xeroxed and

enlarged excerpts from Arthur Mee’s domestic encyclopaedia.

These are drowned in a messy resinous goo, symbolic perhaps

of a housewife trapped like a fly on old-fashioned flypaper

– or perhaps calling to mind newspaper placed under an

oven to catch escaping fat. The enigmatic presentation and

the crumpled forms are early evidence of Tweedie’s fondness

for rough facture and finish and a sense of unease, that typify

the artist’s later large-scale installations. WARWICK BROWN.

“For more than 35 years, I have considered jewellery to be an important aspect of personal appearance; our attention to dress, hair, make-up and nails deserves the equally critical selection of accessory. My work is very individual in nature, each piece having its own identity; taking stones as inspiration and working metal in a wide range of technical skills has maintained my enthusiasm for creating fresh work. Quality of material and workmanship are my imperatives”. Christine Halfermalz-Wheeler www.theartistgoldsmith.com

DEM Penny Jewels is the lovechild of Shona Lee’s DEM Jewellery and Kate Megaw’s Penny Sage label. The pair work intuitively together letting the material and process of construction feed their designs. While spawned from their talks of pirate marauding, the range of knitted, knotted, fringed and intricately tangled pieces can cite Egyptian, art deco, mid 60s, late 70s, craftwork and hippie-bogan influences. These nice jewels have a high quality finish and sharp attention to detail attributed to Shona and Kate’s fanatic design techniques. Pieces are made from specially picked limited edition chain; because of this each item has been numbered, making it a collectable. www.demjewellery.com

Meadowlark is the personal outlet for two talented young designers who take their craft seriously enough to produce long lasting, precious jewellery for others to treasure. Claire Hammon is a self educated, uninhibited designer of much. In her late teens, early twenties she created and grew a successful street wear label into the solid brand Urchin. The sale of this in 2004 allowed her to launch fully into her passion for graphic design. She now runs a studio that holds a solid portfolio of magazine, textile, graphic and web design work.Greg is a trained visual artist who turned his hand to mastering the craft of jewellery design and construction. He has worked on signature range’s for brands such as Huffer and also creates stunning one off pieces for private clients wanting personal, memorable wedding jewellery. Meadowlark was created to complement the talents of both Claire and Greg. They work together on all aspects of the design process and prototyping and hand make every piece from their Grey Lynn studio. Their ultimate aim of producing high end, fashion and art based jewellery is reflected in their growing market and customer loyalty. www.meadowlark.co.nz
