Adjectives

An adjective is often defined as a word which describes or gives more information about a noun.

Possesive Adjectives- used to show ownership or possession.Examples:- I own a laptop. = It is my laptop. - My sister owns a house. = It is her house.- We use this website. = It is our website

Demonstrative Adjectives- used to modify a noun to point out or demonstrate a specific item- this, that, these, and thoseExamples:- This bag is not mine. That one is mine

Quantitative Adjectives- indicates the quantity in general terms of an object. - some , much , little , enough , all , no , any ,whole Examples:- Give me some food.- I do not have enough water.- Do you have any money?

Descriptive Adjectives- describe the nounExamples: - The smelly dog.- The moor is lonely.- The new computer. 

Interrogative Adjectives-  modify nouns and are used in questions.- What, whose, where, why, how, whichExamples:- What book are they reading?- Whose car is this? - How are you?

Comparison of Adjectives- Some adjectives can be comparedExamples:-good, better, the best-little, less, the least-important, more important, the most important

Formation of Adjectives- Adjectives can be formed from nouns, verbs or other adjectivesExamples:Noun- Hope: hopeful, Gold: golden, Dirt: dirtyVerbs- Play: playful, Break: broken, Hope: hopefulAdjectives- Red: reddish, Sick: sickly

Present participles (-ing verbs) can also work as adjectivesExamples: Baseball is an exciting game.Baseball is interesting.Past participles (verb 3) can also work as adjectivesExamples:The man is tired.The exhausted man fell asleep.

Attributive and Predicative Use-When an adjective is placed before its noun, it is used attributively.Example: - The green bush

- When it follows a linking verb, it is used predicatively.Example: - The bush is green.

Correct order when placing adjectivesOpinion→Dimension→Age→Shape→Colour→Origin→Material *use no more than three adjectives

Examples: 1. A wonderful old Italian clock. (opinion - age - origin)2. A big square blue box. (dimension - shape - color)3. A disgusting pink plastic ornament. (opinion - color - material)4.Some slim new French trousers. (dimension - age - origin)
