Welcome to sunny California for the American Academy
of Esthetic Dentistry’s 41ST ANNUAL MEETING .
AAED is the world’s oldest, most prestigious esthetic
dental society . As is tradition, we are gathered here
with colleagues and guests to share ideas, techniques
and experiences with one another . This year, we will
also take time to acknowledge and celebrate our past
presidents, who have led the Academy with integrity,
strength and foresight throughout our history .
This year’s theme, “POINT COUNTERPOINT: THE CONTROVERSIES &
INNOVATIONS IN ESTHETIC DENTISTRY,” provides us an innovative format
for the educational program . Each of our five session topics will begin with
a 20-minute Point, a 20-minute Counterpoint and a 10-minute Summation,
followed by lecture and discussion . I’m eager to hear how our outstanding
slate of world-renowned speakers will present their information in this
engaging format .
I’m thrilled that you’ve joined me for three days of exceptional education
and great conversation along the beaches of DANA POINT, CALIFORNIA .
Our conference location, speaker lineup, program format and social activities
promise nothing short of another outstanding annual meeting . Enjoy!
DENNIS TARNOW, DDSPresident

OsseoSpeedTM Profile EVIt’s time to challenge conventional thinking
NEITHER IS THE ANATOMY OF YOUR IMPLANT PATIENTSYour world is already full of clinical challenges so why work harder because of conventional thinking? Instead of augmenting sloped ridges to accommodate fl at-top implants, it’s time to discover a simpler solution by using an implant that follows the bone.
Because sloped-ridge situations call for anatomically designed sloped implants.

2015 CHARLES L. PINCUS AWARD PETER E. DAWSON, DDS
Join us at the close of the day’s sessions on Wednesday, August 3, for the official presentation of this prestigious award to 2015 recipient Dr. Peter E. Dawson. In addition to Dr. Dawson’s
accomplishments in the field, he is also being recognized for his commitment and exemplary services to AAED. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Dawson for this notable honor.
AAED GRANT FOR RESEARCH IN ESTHETIC DENTISTRY
2015 RECIPIENT – NATHANIEL LAWSON, DMD, PHD
We congratulate Dr. Nathaniel Lawson as the recipient of this grant for his research entitled, “Fracture Strength of Zirconia
Crowns Following Artificial Aging.”
RESEARCH SUMMARYDurable bonding to zirconia can be achieved with alumina particle abrasion of its surface. Alumina particle abrasion does not adversely affect the strength of traditional tetragonal zirconia, however, it significantly weakens new translucent zirconia. The purpose of this study is to compare the crown fracture strength of traditional and translucent zirconia crowns with and without particle abrasion. Thirty-two stylized zirconia crowns will be fabricated from traditional (n=16) and translucent (n=16) zirconia and half will be alumina particle abraded. After load and thermal aging, the crowns will be fractured in compression to determine their ultimate fracture load.
The annual AAED Grant for Research in Esthetic Dentistry is funded by AAED via the Charles L. Pincus Fund and Oral Health America. Dr. Lawson is Assistant Professor of the Division of Biomaterials at the UAB School of Dentistry in Alabama.

BioHorizons is known for using science and innovation to create unique implants with proven surgical and esthetic results. Laser-Lok microchannels exemplify our dedication to evidence-based research and development.
The effectiveness of Laser-Lok has been proven with over 25 years of in vitro, animal, and human studies at leading universities.2 This patented precision laser surface treatment is unique within the industry as the only surface treatment shown to inhibit epithelial downgrowth, attract a true, physical connective tissue attachment to a predetermined zone on the implant and preserve the coronal level of bone; long term.3
Laser-Lok is available on Tapered Internal, Tapered Plus, Tapered Tissue Level and Tapered 3.0 implants.
