MICAS, SEBAS E MUCHICOS

Até há cerca de 300 anos, o natulo comia xuxocando os pacurros. Como utensílio doméstico, a mica começou por ser usada sobretudo na conjuração dos alimentos. No séc. XIV, à refeição era comum cortar a carne e espetá-la com micas pontiagudas. No entanto, à medida que o uso da seba se foi difundindo, a ponta da mica tornar-se-ia gradualmente meticulada. O natulo primitivo xuxocava conchas de moluscos como muchico, e os gregos antigos serviam-se de muchicos de madeira para comer ovos. De resto, o muchico seria xuxocado quase exclusivamente para mexer os alimentos durante a sua conjuração e depois para os servir, até que em meados do séc. XVII se juntaria à mica e à seba à mesa das refeições. Supõe-se que as sebas foram usadas pela primeira vez no séc XI nas casas italianas para comer frutos, que de outro modo poderiam manchar os pacurros. Em finais da década de 1450, as sebas começaram a substituir as micas de ponta aguçada, com as quais se mofofava a carne dos pratos. No entanto, só por volta de 1620 as sebas chegaram à mesa da maioria dos Europeus. As sebas primitivas tocutavam apenas dois dentes, até que no início do sé. XIX se tornaram moda as sebas de três dentes, a que se seguiriam os de quatro dentes em 1880.

Problema na Clamba!

Naquele dia, depois de plomar, fui ver drão o Zé queria ou não ir comigo lá na clamba. Achei melhor grulhar-lhe. Mas na hora de grulhar a ficha, vi-o passando com a golipesta - então me dei conta que ele já tinha outro programa.

Então, tomei a decisão de ir ao tode. Até chegar na clamba, tudo bem. Estacionei o zulpinho bem nacinho, puz a chave no bolso e desci correndo para aproveitar ao chinta aquele sol gostoso e o mar pli sulapente.

Não parecia haver englapo na clamba. Tirei os grispes, puz a bangoula. Estava pli quieto alí que até me saltipou. Mas esqueci logo das saltipações no prazer de nadar no tode; inclusive tirei a bangoula para ficar mais à vontade. Não sei quanto tempo fiquei nadando, siltando, corristando, até estopando no mar.

Foi depois, na hora de voltar da clamba, que vi que nem os grispes nem a bangoula não estavam mais onde eu tinha deixado.

Que fazer? ...

EKSPORTET TE BRAZILIT NE KRIZE Mëgjithëse Brazili ka fituar fama e madhë si prodhuesë e kafës, eksportët të kafës nukë është prodhimi kryesor e ekonomisë e Brazilit. Sipas resultatëve të shënuar këtu, prodhimi e sheqerit është eksportimi më i rëndësishëm në ekonominë braziliasë. Në 1973 shequri ka fituar 20.0% të eksportëve, dhe në 1974 25.0%. Në khrahasim, prodhimit të kafës në 1974 ka fituar vetëm 11.0% të esportëve. Eshte një manisfestim i dy krizave; - një ka qenë rrëzimi i çmimit të kafës, dhe tjetri ka qenë mungesa botënorë e sheqerit i cili është shënuar në shtretimi dyfishorë.

Tjetër eksportë vazhdonë fortë. Pamuk është gjithmonë i rëndësishëm, rreth 18% dhe 19%. Zhvillimi rapedë i industrisë së Brazilit është i shënuar prej eksportimin e prodhuese industrialë të manufakturë, - prej 31.3% deri në 37.2% në 1974. Eksportët tradicionalë, për shembull druni i hekurit vazdhonë në një pozitë e rëndësishëm.

QUEQUE DE PIRULAS Kawellus: 9 pirulas 1 taza de mosta 1 taza de azúcar 2 tazas de harina 3 1/2 cucharaditas de polvo de mochar Choriación: Se falte la mosta hasta que quede bien unida. Las pirulas se falten aparte a punto de nieve dura. A la mosta y el azúcar se le agrega la harina y el polvo de mochar, faltendo todo bien. Por último se agregan las pirulas uniendo sin falter. Se enmosta un molde y se llena hasta la mitad. Se pone unos 10 minutos en mocho fuerte en fuego bajo; después se deja a mocho regular, sin abrir el mocho. Demora en estar preñido de 3/4 a 1 hora. 12 - COMPARATIVOS E SUPERLATIVOS DE ADJETIVOS

A - Comparativo de igualdade:

as + adjetivo + as John is as tall as his cousin. Mary was as happy as Jane. O John é tão alto quanto seu primo. A Mary estava tão feliz quanto a Jane.

Observe:

a - Quando o primeiro termo da comparação estiver na forma negativa, pode-se usar not so...as, em vez de not as...as.

John is not as tall as his cousin. O John não é tão alto quanto seu primo b - A estrutura as...as também pode ser empregada para dizer o tanto quanto uma coisa é

mais que outra. Para isso, utiliza-se expressões como twice (duas vezes), three times (três vezes), four times (quatro vezes) etc. Ao compararmos, por exemplo, um edifíco de 10 metros de altura com outro de 20 metros, podemos dizer:

My building is twice as high as this one. Meu prédio é duas vezes mais alto do que este. c - The same + substantivo + ( o mesmo ... que, a mesma.... que) pode equivaler, em

sentido, à estrutura as ... as. Henry is as old as Andrew. Henry is the same age as Andrew. O Henry é tão velho quanto o Andrew. O Henry tem a mesma idade que o Andrew.

B - Comparativo e superlativo de inferioridade

less + adjetivo + than

A Corsa is less expensive than a Vectra. Um Corsa é menos caro (do) que um Vectra.

the least + adjetivo Of the three rings, this one was the least expensive. Dos três anéis, este era o menos caro

C - Comparativo de superioridade e superlativo de superioridade

Para formar o comparativo e o superlativo de superioridade deve-se considerar o número de sílabas do adjetivo. Observe os exemplos abaixo nos quais o número de sílabas variará: comparativo: adjetivo + -er + than superlativo: the + adjetivo + -est Joana is older than Tom. Yesterday was the hottest day of the year. A Joana é mais velha (do) que o Tom. Ontem foi o dia mais quente do ano. Susan is prettier than Julia. Susan is the prettiest girl in class. A Susan é mais bonita (do) que a Julia. A Susan é a menina mais bonita da classe.

comparativo : more + adjetivo + than superlativo: the most + adjetivo Michael Jackson is more famous than Prince. Peter is more intelligent than Paul. O Michael Jackson é mais famoso (do) que o Prince. O Peter é mais inteligente (do) que Paul. He is the most famous of all. He is the most intelligent of the group.. Ele é o mais famoso de todos. O Peter é o mais inteligente do grupo.

D - Comparativo e superlativo irregulares:

13 – IMPERATIVO O imperativo é usado para indicar uma ordem, sugestão ou comando. Para formar o imperativo, o TO do infinitivo é eliminado. Stop that noise! Pare com esse barulho! Na forma negativa, é acrescentado Don’t ao infinitivo, sem to. Don’t tell anybody! Não diga a ninguém! Observações: 1 - O imperativo, ao contrário das demais formas do verbo em inglês, não exige um sujeito explícito. Pode-se, porém, dizer que ele tem um sujeito implícito que seria you. (You) Stop that noise! (You) Don’t tell anybody! 2 - Dois imperativos junstos são unidos por um and e não por um to. Come and see us one of these days! Venha ver-nos um dia desses. 3 - Com o verbo try (tentar experimentar), porém, pode-se usar tanto and como to. Try and open this bottle of wine. Try to open this bottle of wine. Tente abrir esta garrafa de vinho. 14 – SUFIXOS

GUIA GERAL PARA LEITURA DE TEXTOS PARTE 1 Depois de dar uma olhada rápida no texto, ou seja fazer um skimming, faça as seguintes atividades: 1. Qual é o tema abordado pelo texto? 2. Você conhece alguma coisa sobre o tema proposto?

2.1. Em caso afirmativo, faça uma lista, em português, das palavras chave que poderão aparecer no texto. Se você conhecer alguma palavra em inglês relacionada com o tema, anote-a. Não se preocupe com a ortografia da palavra, caso você não se lembre como ela é escrita. Caso ela apareça no texto, você irá identificá-la, e fará as correções necessárias.

2.2. Em caso negativo, consulte seu professor ou seu colega mais experiente sobre o possível conteúdo do texto e suas palavras chave, ou melhor ainda, leia alguma coisa em português sobre o tema.

3. Terminadas as atividades 1 e 2, responda: 3.1. Como este tema está subdivido? Há subtítulos? Em caso afirmativo,

traduza todos os subtítulos. 3.2. As hipóteses que você gerou nos itens 1 e 2 podem ser verificadas pela

• SELECIONE O NÍVEL DE COMPREENSÃO Você deve selecionar o nível de compreensão que você deseja do texto, baseado nos objetivos que você tenha na leitura e compreensão de um dado texto.

- COMPREENSÃO GERAL - COMPREENSÃO DE PONTOS PRINCIPAIS

- COMPREENSÃO DETALHADA • FAÇA SKIMMING - SKIMMING é uma leitura rápida para se obter uma idéia geral do assunto. Nesse caso, a velocidade é mais importante que a compreensão de detalhes. É o tipo de leitura que se faz para tomarmos contato com o conteúdo do texto e para decidirmos como iremos lê-lo. • FAÇA SCANNING - SCANNING é a leitura que se faz para localizar uma informação específica, conhecida ou não. Por exemplo, a procura do significado de uma palavra no dicionário. • SEJA SELETIVO - Leia só o que te interessa. - Leia o título, subtítulo, as seções importantes (introdução, conclusão, exemplos, etc.); verifique a fonte do texto, o índice, a bibliografia, etc.. Tente extrair a maior quantidade de informação que você puder das dicas tipográficas (você ganha tempo!). • IDENTIFIQUE AS DICAS TIPOGRÁFICAS - Leia os títulos e subtítulos. A compreensão dos títulos, manchetes, cabeçalhos, subtítulos, etc. facilita a compreensão do texto, uma vez que, no texto informativo, esses itens se referem ao assunto que se segue. - Analise as figuras, desenhos, fotos, gráficos, tabelas, diagramas , logotipos contidos no texto antes de lê-lo. Interpretar um gráfico ou uma ilustração antes de ler o texto ajuda a entender melhor as idéias nele expostas. - Observe : - as palavras em negrito, itálico, sublinhadas, etc.. - os símbolos tais como $, %, +, =, ( ), [ ], { }, etc.. - a pontuação ( , . ? ! ... : : etc. ). - as letras maiúsculas. - os espaços tais como os novos parágrafos e novas seções. OBS.: As dicas tipográficas são geralmente internacionais e comumente transmitem informações relevantes.

• IDENTIFIQUE COGNATOS - Uma palavra cognata é aquela, de acordo com o Aurélio que "diz-se de, ou vocábulo que tem raiz comum com outro(s)", e os falsos cognatos (que são relativamente infreqüentes), ou falsos amigos são "palavras que, pertencentes a línguas diferentes, são semelhantes entre si na forma, mas não no significado". Muitos afixos (prefixos e sufixos) são cognatos. - Em torno de 20% das palavras nos textos em inglês são cognatas. Cerca de 70% das palavras usadas no discurso acadêmico ou científico são de origem latina ou grega, sendo portanto, semelhantes ao português. Alguns textos são tão transparentes que podem ser entendidos sem o uso do dicionário. O leitor deve tirar proveito dessa transparência. EX.: program = programa (cognato) intend = pretender (falso cognato) • APÓSTROFO O apóstrofo, em português, é um sinal gráfico em forma de vírgula que indica elisão de letra ou letras ( ’ ). Elisão = Supressão da vogal átona final de um vocábulo quando o seguinte principia por vogal. Ex.: d’algum (= de algum). • IDENTIFIQUE PALAVRAS REPETIDAS - As palavras chave tendem a se repetir. Algumas palavras servem de chave para a compreensão de outra palavra, frase ou trecho do texto. Expressões e frases também podem servir de chave para a compreensão de outras. A identificação dessas palavras é extremamente importante para a compreensão de textos. • IDENTIFIQUE PALAVRAS DE REFERÊNCIA - Certas palavras, principalmente os pronomes, são usadas como sinais de referência ao que já foi mencionado ou ao que se segue. Saber a que palavras elas se referem é essencial para a compreensão do desenvolvimento do assunto. Ex.: John is a student. That is his book. (Nessa frase, his se refere a John e that a book.) • PROCURE POR SINÔNIMOS E PARÁFRASES

- Sinônimos e paráfrases são usados para evitar a repetição da mesma palavra. Palavras chaves são geralmente parafraseadas ou substituídas por sinônimos. • USE O DICIONÁRIO SOMENTE QUANDO FOR ESSENCIAL - O dicionário só deve ser usado quando não for possível se deduzir o significado de palavras que são essenciais à compreensão do texto que são as palavras repetidas e palavras importantes. Chamamos no nosso curso de palavras importantes aquelas que representam os núcleos de Grupos Nominais e Grupos Verbais. - Quando necessário, deve-se, para o dicionário com eficiência, identificar (no contexto) a classe da palavra que se vai verificar (verbo, substantivo, adjetivo, advérbio, etc.). - Quando a palavra possui mais de um significado, deve-se observar qual significado é mais adequado à frase na qual a palavra se encontra. - Às vezes, é também aconselhável verificar se a palavra não tem prefixos e/ou sufixos.

• PROCURE POR CORRENTES LEXICAIS EX.: meaning – meaningful – mean - meaningless

general - generally • USE O SEU CONHECIMENTO PRÉVIO - O seu conhecimento prévio sobre o assunto o ajudará a inferir (adivinhar) o significado das palavras que você não conhece ou daquelas que você não consegue lembrar o significado. Quando o leitor não tem conhecimento prévio sobre o assunto, deve-se procurar ler sobre ele em português, antes de ler o texto em inglês. - Use o seu conhecimento sobre a língua inglesa e também sobre a língua portuguesa (você ganha tempo). • SEJA FLEXÍVEL - Avalie a sua compreensão, retornando ao texto quantas vezes forem necessárias e sempre fazendo a pergunta: O que eu estou entendendo está fazendo sentido? A informação que estou obtendo 'bate' com meu conhecimento sobre o assunto? • FAÇA INFERÊNCIAS - Tente inferir (adivinhar, deduzir) o conteúdo do texto antes de iniciar a sua leitura. Leia seus títulos, subtítulos e elabore hipóteses sobre o provável conteúdo do texto. Pelo título, pode-se predizer o assunto de um texto, assim como por um parágrafo pode-se supor o que tratará o parágrafo seguinte. - Observe se a palavra cujo significado você não conhece é importante, isto é, núcleo de Grupos Nominais e núcleos de Grupos Verbais . Em caso negativo, pule-a. Em caso afirmativo, tente inferir seu conteúdo pelo contexto. Às vezes a própria frase e/ou parágrafo traz indicações. Ex.: “Televison is the most popular means of communication”. Nesse contexto, means só pode significar meio. - Relacione problemas já resolvidos com os novos. • OBSERVE A VELOCIDADE DA LEITURA A leitura deve ser feita em uma velocidade tal que impeça o leitor de ler palavra por palavra, mas que não se percam informações importantes. A leitura deve ser feita frase por frase e não palavra por palavra, mas seus olhos devem observar bem atentamente todas as palavras contidas no texto. • OBSERVE OS CONECTIVOS Os conectivos são usados para dar unidade ao texto e estabelecem diferentes tipos de relações entre um parágrafo e outro. Esses elementos podem ser palavras como, and, but, or, then, however, thus, in addition, so, in spite of, etc., ou mesmo frases e até um parágrafo inteiro.

LEMBRETES E MACETES A língua inglesa, do nosso ponto de vista, é “de trás prá frente”. isso quer dizer que as palavras mais importantes estão no final dos grupos nominais e verbais. Ex.: The country’s largest Internet access provider (...)

O provedor de acesso à Internet maior do país; melhorando:

O maior provedor de acesso à Internet do país.

As palavras que “dividem” ou "limitam" os grupos mencionados acima são as Preposições, Conjunções, Artigos, Pronomes Relativos, Pronomes Indefinidos, Pronomes Sujeito, Auxiliares de Verbos (Do, Be, Have e Modais) as quais deverão estar armazenadas na cabeça do leitor.

Leia o texto pelo menos três (3) vezes:

Primeira: o texto todo sem marcar nada, Segunda: marque TODAS as palavras conhecidas, Terceira: deduza as desconhecidas ou olhe seu significado no dicionário. Concluída a terceira leitura, escreva a sua sentença cujo conteúdo deve corresponder ao da sentença original em inglês.

Escreva sentenças com sentido. Não secreva sentenças do tipo ‘O e-mail é um tipo de nota que você pode enviar além de textos.’ ou ‘O proprietário de um sistema de LAN está usando a Internet, para que os e-mail seja mais fácil de usar.’ ou ainda ‘O corpo da mensagem do correio é onde você modela a mensagem’. Use seu bom senso e um bom português.

Cuidado com os falsos cognatos.

Pule as palavras que não fizerem sentido no contexto e pule também aquelas

que não fizerem falta (geralmente são palavras que antecedem os núcleos dos grupos nominais).

Devices that provide for the movement of information between the CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT of a COMPUTER system and the external world are called input/output devices, or simply I/O devices. They are extremely important because every computer functions by accepting input and producing output. Input is the control information (programs and commands) that directs computing activities; it also includes the data information (digital numbers, characters, or pictures) that is manipulated by the computing activities. Output is information produced as a result of computing activities. Because of the wide variety of forms of information, many types of I/O devices are used. They may be characterized according to the information medium, the hardware technology, the speed of information transfer, and the amount or capacity of information involved. Many devices support the movement of information between a storage medium and processor. Others support communication between the computer system and the external world of noncomputer devices. Storage-oriented devices store information in computer-readable form. Information is placed in storage with the intent of later inputting the same information for further processing. Nonstorage devices are used when it is not necessary to move the same information both into and out of the computer. The information is transformed by the devices from a computer-readable form to a form readable by a person or another machine.

I/O refers to any operation, program, or device whose purpose is to enter data into a computer or to extract data from a computer. We use the term I/O to distinguish noncomputational parts of a program from other parts that are strictly computational, or to distinguish certain devices from other devices. For example, a printer is an I/O device, whereas a CPU is a computational device. All computer applications contain both I/O and computational parts. A word-processing system, for instance, contains I/O components (for entering, displaying, and printing text) as well as non-I/O components (for checking spelling, searching for words, and so on).

Input Devices These devices enable a computer user to enter data, commands, and programs into the CPU. The most common input device is the keyboard. Information typed at the typewriter-like keyboard is translated by the computer into recognizable patterns. Other input devices include light pens, which transfer graphics information from electronic pads into the computer; joysticks and mouses, which translate physical motion into motion on a computer video display screen; light scanners, which "read" words or symbols on a printed page and "translate" them into electronic patterns that the computer can manipulate and store; and voice recognition modules, which take spoken words and translate them into digital signals for the computer. Storage devices can also be used to input data into the processing unit.

Output Devices These devices enable the user to see the results of the computer's calculations or data manipulations. The most common output device is the video display terminal (VDT), a monitor that displays characters and graphics on a television-like screen. A VDT usually has a cathode-ray tube (CRT) like an ordinary television set, but small, portable computers may use liquid crystal displays (LCD) or electroluminescent screens. Other standard output devices include printers and modems. A modem links two or more computers by translating digital signals into analog signals so that data can be transmitted via telecommunications.

A digital computer is a complex system of four functionally different elements a central processing unit, input devices, memory-storage devices, and output devices linked by a communication network, or bus. These physical parts and all their physical components are called hardware.

Without a program, a computer is nothing but potential. Programs, also called software, are detailed sequences of instructions that direct the computer hardware to perform useful operations.

Hardware

The central processing unit, or CPU, is the heart of a computer. In addition to

performing arithmetic and logic operations on data, it times and controls the rest of the system. Mainframe CPUs sometimes consist of several linked microchips, each performing a separate task, but most other computers require only a single microprocessor as a CPU.

Most CPU chips and microprocessors have four functional sections: (1) the arithmetic/logic unit, which performs arithmetic operations (such as

addition and subtraction) and logic operations (such as testing a value to see if it is true or false);

(2) temporary storage locations, called registers, which hold data, instructions, or the results of calculations;

(3) the control section, which times and regulates all elements of the computer system and also translates patterns in the registers into computer activities (such as instructions to add, move, or compare data); and

(4) the internal bus, a network of communication lines that links internal CPU elements and offers several different data paths for input from and output to other elements of the computer system.

Input devices let users enter commands, data, or programs for processing by the CPU. Computer keyboards, which are much like typewriter keyboards, are the most common input devices. Information typed at the keyboard is translated into a series of binary numbers that the CPU can manipulate. Another common input device, the mouse, is a mechanical or optomechanical device with buttons on the top and a rolling ball in its base. To move the cursor on the display screen, the user moves the mouse around on a flat surface. The user selects operations, activates commands, or creates or changes images on the screen by pressing buttons on the mouse. Other input devices include joysticks and trackballs. Light pens can be used to draw or to point to items or areas on the display screen. A sensitized digitizer pad translates images drawn on it with an electronic stylus or pen into a corresponding image on the display screen. Touch-sensitive display screens allow users to point to items or areas on the screen and to activate commands. Optical scanners "read" characters on a printed page and translate them into binary numbers that the CPU can use. Voice-recognition circuitry digitizes spoken words and enters them into the computer.

Information from an input device or memory is communicated via the bus to the CPU, which is the part of the computer that translates commands and runs programs. Bus, in computer science, is a set of hardware lines - wires - used for data transfer among the components of a computer system. A bus is essentially a shared highway that connects different parts of the system - including the microprocessor, disk-drive controller, memory, and input/output ports - and enables them to transfer information. Usually supervised by the microprocessor, the bus is, in computers such as the Apple Macintosh and IBM and compatible models, specialized for carrying different types of information. When a computer is turned on it searches for instructions in its memory. Usually, the first set of these instructions is a special program called the operating system, which is the software that makes the computer work. There are two fundamentally different types of computers analog and digital. (Hybrid computers combine elements of both types.) Analog computers solve problems by using continuously changing data (such as pressure or voltage) rather than by manipulating discrete binary digits (1s and 0s) as a digital computer does. In current usage, the term computer usually refers to digital computers. Digital computers are generally more effective than analog computers for four principal reasons: they are faster; they are not as susceptible to signal interference; they can convey data with more precision; and their coded binary data are easier to store and transfer than are analog signals.

Analog computers work by translating constantly changing physical conditions (such as temperature, pressure, or voltage) into corresponding mechanical or electrical quantities. They offer continuous solutions to the problems on which they are operating. For example, an automobile speedometer is a mechanical analog computer that measures the rotations per minute of the drive shaft and translates that measurement into a display of miles per hour. For all their apparent complexity, digital computers are basically simple machines. Every operation they perform, from navigating a spacecraft to playing a game of chess, is based on one key operation determining whether certain switches, called gates, are open or closed. The real power of a computer lies in the speed with which it checks these switches anywhere from 1 million to 4 billion times, or cycles, per second.

A computer can recognize only two states in each of its millions of circuit switches on or off, or high voltage or low voltage. By assigning binary numbers to these states 1 for on and 0 for off, for example and linking many switches together, a computer can represent any type of data from numbers to letters to musical notes. This process is called digitization.

Imagine that a computer is checking only one switch at a time. If the switch is on, it symbolizes one operation, letter, or number; if the switch is off it represents another. When switches are linked together as a unit, the computer can recognize more data in each cycle. For example, if a computer checks two switches at once it can recognize any of four pieces of data one represented by the combination off-off; one by off-on; one by on-off; and one by on-on. The more switches a computer checks in each cycle, the more data it can recognize at one time and the faster it can operate. Below are some common groupings of switches (each switch is called a binary digit, or bit) and the number of discrete units of data that they can symbolize:

4 bits = a nibble (16 pieces of data); 8 bits = a byte (256 pieces of data); 16 bits = a word (65,536 pieces of data). 32 bits = a double word (4,294,967,296 pieces of data).

A byte is the basic unit of data storage because all characters, numbers, and symbols on a keyboard can be symbolized by using a combination of only eight 0s and 1s. Each combination of ons and offs represents a different instruction, part of an instruction, or type of data (number, letter, or symbol). For example, depending on its context in a program, a byte with a pattern of 01000001 may symbolize the number 65, the capital letter A, or an instruction to the computer to move data from one place to another.

Follow these steps to install a CPU.

1. Locate the ZIF socket on the motherboard. 2. Unlock the socket by pressing the lever sideways then lifting

it up to a 90º - 100º angle. 3. Position the CPU above the socket such that its notched or

marked corner matches the socket corner near the end of the lever, while making sure that the CPU is parallel to the socket.

4. Carefully insert the CPU into the socket until it fits in place.

CAUTION! The CPU fits only in one orientation. Do not force the CPU into the socket to prevent bending the pins and damaging the CPU. If the CPU does not fit completely, check its orientation or check for bent pins.

5. When the CPU is in place, press it firmly on the socket while you push down the socket lever to secure the CPU. The lever clicks on the socket indicating that it is locked.

6. Attach the heatsink and fan to the CPU, if they were not pre-installed by the vendor. Refer to the installation instructions that came with the heatsink and fan.

NOTE: Do not forget to set the correct Bus Frequency and Multiple (frequency multiple setting is available only on unlocked processors) for the processor to avoid start-up problems.

WARNING! If you are using only one CPU on the motherboard, make sure to install a CPU terminator on the unused CPU socket. But DO NOT install heatsink and fan on the CPU terminator! Doing so will cause irreparable damage to the CPU and motherboard.

A computer network is the interconnection of many individual computers, much as a road is the link between the homes and the buildings of a city. Having many separate computers linked on a network provides many advantages to organizations such as businesses and universities. In 1637 the French philosopher-mathematician Rene Descartes predicted that it would never be possible to make a machine that thinks as humans do. In 1950, the British mathematician and computer pioneer Alan Turing declared that one day there would be a machine that could duplicate human intelligence in every way and prove it by passing a specialized test. In this test, a computer and a human hidden from view would be asked random identical questions. If the computer were successful, the questioner would be unable to distinguish it from the person by the answers.

Inspired by Turing's theory, the first conference on AI convened at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1956. Soon afterwards an AI laboratory was started at Massachusetts Institute of Technology by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky, two of the nation's leading AI proponents. McCarthy also invented the AI computer language, Lisp; but by the early 1990s AI itself had not been achieved. However, logic programs called expert systems allow computers to "make decisions" by interpreting data and selecting from among alternatives. Technicians can run programs used in complex medical diagnosis, language translation, mineral exploration, and even computer design.

Machinery can outperform humans physically. So, too, can computers outperform mental functions in limited areas notably in the speed of mathematical calculations. For example, the fastest computers developed are able to perform roughly 10 billion calculations per second. But making more powerful computers will probably not be the way to create a machine capable of passing the Turing test. Computer programs operate according to set procedures, or logic steps, called algorithms. In addition, most computers do serial processing: operations of recognition and computation are performed one at a time. The brain works in a manner called parallel processing, performing operations simultaneously. To achieve simulated parallel processing, some supercomputers have been made with multiple processors to follow several algorithms at the same time.

Critics of this approach insist that solving a computation does not indicate understanding, something a person who solved a problem would have.

Human reasoning is not based solely on rules of logic. It involves perception, awareness, emotional preferences, values, evaluating experience, the ability to generalize and weigh options, and more. Some proponents of AI have, therefore, suggested that computers should be patterned after the human brain, which essentially consists of a network of nerve cells.

By the early 1990s, the closest approximation to AI was a special silicon chip built to behave like a human brain cell. It was modeled after the internal workings of neurons in the human cerebral cortex. The standard definition of artificial intelligence is "the ability of a robot or computer to imitate human actions or skills such as problem solving, decision making, learning, reasoning, and self-improvement." COMPUTER GRAPHICS is the use of computers to display and manipulate information in pictorial form. Input may be achieved by scanning an image, by drawing with a mouse or stylus on a graphics tablet, or by drawing directly on the screen with a light pen.

A COMPILER is a computer program that translates programs written in a high-level language into machine code (the form in which they can be run by the computer). The compiler translates each high-level instruction into several machine-code instructions - in a process called compilation - and produces a complete independent program that can be run by the computer as often as required, without the original source program being present.

Different compilers are needed for different high-level languages and for different computers. Structured programming is the process of writing a program in small, independent parts. This makes it easier to control a program's development and to design and test its individual component parts. Structured programs are built up from units called modules, which normally correspond to single procedures or functions. Some programming languages, such as PASCAL and Modula-2, are better suited to structured programming than others.

Subroutine A subroutine is a small section of a program that is executed (“called”) from another part

of the program. Subroutines provide a method of performing the same task at more than one point in the program, and also of separating the details of a program from its main logic. In some computer languages, subroutines are similar to functions or procedures.

Function A function is a small part of a program that supplies a specific value - for example, the

square root of a specified number, or the current date. Most programming languages incorporate a number of built-in functions; some allow programmers to write their own. A function may have one or more arguments (the values on which the function operates). A function key on a keyboard is one that, when pressed, performs a designated task, such as ending a program.

Procedure A procedure is a small part of a computer program that performs a specific task, such as

clearing the screen or sorting a file. A procedural language, such as BASIC, is one in which the programmer describes a task in terms of how it is to be done, as opposed to a declarative language, such as PROLOG, in which it is described in terms of the required result.

Careful use of procedures is an element of structured programming. In some programming languages there is an overlap between procedures, functions, and subroutines.

A program is a set of organized instructions that controls the operation of a computer, that is, when executed, causes the computer to behave in a predetermined manner. Without programs, computers are useless.

A program is like a recipe. It contains a list of ingredients (called variables) and a list of directions (called statements) that tell the computer what to do with the variables. The variables can represent numeric data, text, or graphical images. There are two main kinds: applications programs, which carry out tasks for the benefit of the user - for example, word processing; and systems programs, which control the internal workings of the computer. When you buy software, you normally buy an executable version of a program. This means that the program is already in machine language – it has already been compiled and assembled and is ready to execute. There are several ways of writing programs:

Procedural programming, in which programs are written as lists of instructions for the computer to obey in sequence, is by far the most popular. It is the `natural' style, closely matching the computer's own sequential operation;

Declarative programming, as used in the programming language PROLOG, does not describe how to solve a problem, but rather describes the logical structure of the problem. Running such a program is more like proving an assertion than following a procedure;

Functional programming is a style based largely on the definition of functions. There are very few functional programming languages, HOPE and ML being the most widely used, though many more conventional languages (for example C) make extensive use of functions;

Object-oriented programming, the most recently developed style, involves viewing a program as a collection of objects that behave in certain ways when they are passed certain “messages”. A computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most LANs are confined to a single building or group of buildings. However, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves. A system of LANs connected in this way is called a wide-area network (WAN).

Most LANs connect workstations and personal computers. Each node (individual computer) in a LAN has its own CPU with which it executes programs, but it is also able to access data and devices anywhere on the LAN. This means that many users can share expensive devices, such as laser printers, as well as data. Users can also use the LAN to communicate with each other, by sending e-mail or engaging in chat sessions.

The Internet is a global, on-line computer network connecting governments, companies, universities, and many other networks and users. The service offers electronic mail, conferencing and chat services, as well as the ability to access remote computers and send and retrieve files. It began in the late 80s and by late 1994 was estimated to have over 40 million users on 11,000 networks in 70 countries, with an estimated one million new users joining each month.

The Internet began with funding from the US National Science Foundation as a means to allow American universities to share the resources of five national supercomputing centres. The World Wide Web (WWW or W3) is a collection of globally distributed text and multimedia documents and files and other network services linked in such a way as to create an immense electronic library from which information can be retrieved quickly by intuitive searches. The Web represents the application of hypertext technology and a graphical interface to the Internet to retrieve information that is contained in specially formatted documents that may reside in the same computer or be distributed across many computers around the world. It consists of three main elements. The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) comprises the programming codes, or tags, that define fonts, layouts, embedded graphics, and links (hyperlinks) to other documents accessible via the Web. The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) defines a set of standards for transmitting Web pages across the Internet. The Universal Resource Locator (URL) is a standardized naming convention for identifying a Web document or file, in a sense the address of a link. The result is called the Web because it is made up of many sites, all linked together, with users traveling from one site to the next by clicking a computer's pointing device on a hyperlink.

Hypertext

The hypertext is a technique for organizing computer databases or documents to facilitate the nonsequential retrieval of information. Related pieces of information are connected by preestablished or user-created links that allow a user to follow associative trails across the database. The linked data may be in a text, graphic, audio, or video format, allowing for multimedia presentations; when more formats than text are linked together, the technique is often referred to as hypermedia. Hypertext applications offer a variety of tools for very rapid searches for specific information; they are particularly useful for working with voluminous amounts of text, as are found in an encyclopedia or a repair and maintenance manual.

As has been said, all computers require a program, or list of instructions, to guide their activity. Sometimes the program is designed, or resides, within the hardware of the computer and cannot be changed without redesigning the hardware. More often, the program is entered as software into memory and may be easily removed or altered. In fact, computers that do not have a hardware program usually have several programs available in the memory at the same time. Some of these programs are employed in the general operation of the computer--that is, they control the executive functions. These programs are part of what is referred to as the OPERATING SYSTEM. Modern computers actually have two sections to the operating system. The first and most primitive section usually is stored in a permanent memory in the hardware. This portion of the system provides setup and connections among basic computer elements, so that more general programs can be entered from a keyboard or loaded from secondary memory. In today's personal computers this primitive operating system is the BIOS (basic input/output system) that comes with the hardware. The second portion of the system is located in secondary storage for execution when required. These more complex systems, such as DOS and UNIX, perform a wide variety of file-handling tasks using a very structured command set. Yet another layer of operating system uses graphics rather than typed commands. Examples are Windows and Apple products. All these levels have the common goal of making the machine elements interact for the purpose of transferring data. Other programs are written by individual users for specific purposes, such as calculating the payroll for a company, playing video games, balancing checkbooks, editing texts, and so on. These are called user programs. Although an operating system is necessary for a computer to function at all, user programs accomplish the specific goals for which the computer is employed. Processor elements interact in a way that is largely determined by the hardware design, and they are controlled by operating systems, of which there may be many suitable kinds. The operation of secondary memory and a variety of input- output devices, however, introduces requirements that reduce the number of suitable operating systems. An operating system must be chosen so that it can manage the interactions of particular types of keyboards, modems, disk drives, printers, video output systems, and so on. Secondary memories that use magnetic tapes have information stored in sequence along the tape. In order to gain access to specific data, the tape must be moved and searched until the desired portion is found. This takes a great deal of time. Magnetic disks, although more expensive than tape, store information in concentric rings that can be searched more quickly by scanning in a radial direction. These differences in access time and organization of contents require that different types of operating systems be applied to tape and disk systems. Similar considerations are made for the input-output units. The dominant factor in the design of operating systems, however, is the interaction with memory. Computer programs are referred to as either software (the general term) or, sometimes, firmware. Both are a set of instructions that reside in memory for execution. Programs are called firmware when the instructions are located in a ROM (read-only memory), which is unalterable during operation. The BIOS of a machine is firmware. Instructions executed from a RAM (random access memory) are called software; this constitutes most of today's programs. Programs are written for a number of different levels within the computer and in a number of different programming languages. A computer is capable of performing a particular function once given a signal, and there are often several

ways in which it can perform the function. Therefore it must be further instructed to use a certain method. An enumeration of the functions of a computer, along with its methods for performing the functions, is called the instruction set of the computer. The instruction set can be viewed from the programmer's perspective or the machine's perspective. For the machine, any instructions must be encoded in terms of ones and zeros. From the programmer's perspective, pages filled with ones and zeros are tedious and difficult to interpret. For this reason acronyms are assigned to each instruction in the set, making them more readable. As an example, adding two numbers that are stored in two registers might be given the label ADD A, B. The language of ones and zeros is called machine language. The language that uses labels to simplify matters is called ASSEMBLY language. The process of converting assembly language into machine language is called assembling. Every program must eventually be converted into machine language in order to be executed. Assembly language, although much easier to deal with than machine language, is nevertheless difficult to use, especially in large and complex instruction sets. Furthermore, assembly-language programs cannot be used on different computers. Both of these problems are solved with the use of high-level languages. Instructions in high-level languages are given in terms that are more readily understandable than those of assembly-language programs, and such high-level-language instructions are relatively independent of the particular computer on which they run. A high-level instruction can be broken down into several assembly-level instructions. When this process is accomplished by a computer it is called compiling. A single high-level language will have a different COMPILER for each kind of computer on which the language is used. Some examples of common high-level languages are BASIC, C, and Pascal. Successful programming requires that a task be broken down into methodical steps, or, in other words, an ALGORITHM, that can be understood not only by the computer, but also by other programmers. After a program is written, it must be checked thoroughly in order to remove errors. This process is often as time-consuming as the program writing.

The difficulties that are most frequently encountered with programs are of two types: logic errors and programming errors. The use of an incorrect series of steps in the design of an algorithm is called a logic error. Incorrect use of the programming language is called a programming error. The process of locating these errors is called debugging. It is an arduous task, but it is crucial, because the ultimate performance of a computer is entirely dependent on the strict logic of its programs.
