The 4th

annual

國際樹木會議(香港) INTERNATIONAL ARBORICULTURE SUMMIT – HONG KONG

presents

Balancing Trees and Urban Spaces

November 17-19, 2011 in Hong Kong

with special keynote speakers

Professor Edward Gilman and Dr. Gary Watson

Additional speakers include Professor Jason Grabosky, Professor Francesco Ferrini, Professor NING Zhu

Hua, Dr. Alexia Stokes, Lauren Lanphear, and Sharon Lilly

This is not just a conference, but rather a series of educational programs.

A booklet of all presentations will be included for each attendee for

reference and study.

Last year, with Professor Gilman as the keynote, we focused on trees

above ground – proper young tree pruning methods, etc…

The focus of this year’s conference will be on trees

below ground - tree root development, soils, and the

complexities of the urban environment. The purpose of this

conference is to acquire a better understanding of how roots grow

in the urban environment and how to best manage balancing trees

and urban spaces. Attendees will receive valuable practical

information regarding how to best manage planting strategies in the urban environment, how to choose the

right tree for the right place, and how to best manage and evaluate the mature trees, and their root structures.

Who Should Attend?

Municipal and private sector arborists, landscape architects, property managers and developers, city planners,

park managers, nurserymen, tree care practitioners, landscape contractors, students

IASHK 2011 Speakers

Professor Edward Gilman (Keynote Speaker) Associate Professor, University of Florida- Environmental Horticulture Department,

Gainesville, FL, United States. Ed Gilman received his doctorate from Rutgers

University. He has been on the faculty of the Environmental Horticulture Department at

the University of Florida–Gainesville as professor since 1986. He teaches arboriculture

and conducts research on planting and pruning. He is the author of six books on trees

and landscape plants, many software programs, and websites that have received numerous awards. Gilman wrote An

Illustrated Guide to Pruning, which is in its second edition. He is a past president of ISA’s Florida Chapter.

Dr. Gary Watson (Keynote Speaker) Dr. Watson is the Senior Research Scientist at Morton Arboretum in Illinois.

Research Interests: The central interest of the urban tree root research program is to

understand how to keep trees healthy in urban landscapes by maintaining a healthy balance

between the crown and the root system. Trees must cope with challenges in urban soil

environments that are not encountered in nature. We need to know how root systems react

to these, and how to minimize them. Two approaches are used: attempting to direct more

of the tree's resources towards root growth; and improving the soil environment so that it is

more favorable. Dr. Watson joined the Morton Arboretum research staff in 1986; Adjunct Professor, University of

Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences; Past President of International Society of

Arboriculture, the Arboricultural Research and Education Academy, and the Illinois Arborist Association; Chair,

Green Industry Working Group on Structural Root Depth 2003-present.

Professor Jason Grabosky Dr. Grabosky is an Associate Professor at Rutgers University. A Central New York native,

Dr. Grabosky is the John and Eleanor Kuser Faculty Scholar in Urban and Community

Forestry in the Ecology Evolution and Natural Resources Department at Rutgers University

School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. He is the primary inventor on a US patent

for a modified soil that enhances root growth in urban environments. His research focuses on

tree-pavement design and management issues. He teaches classes in tree care and urban

forestry.

Professor NING Zhu Hua Dr. Zhu H. Ning is a newly elected ISA board member and is a Professor in urban

forestry at Southern University (SU), Baton Rouge, LA. She teaches urban forest

ecophysiology and nutrition of urban tree to graduate students, and urban forestry, forest

Page 4: 4th Annual International Arboriculture Summit in Hong Kong

science, and tree physiology to undergraduate students. Along with all urban forestry faculty members at SU, she

played an important role in the urban forestry programs establishment at B.S., M.S., and coming Ph.D. degree levels.

She is also the Project Director of many research projects funded by the US Department of Agriculture, US

Environment Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Department of Energy, and the

National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council. Dr. Ning’s international collaborative efforts including

serving as invited expert in the areas of the Chinese State Forestry National Natural Forests Protection and Chinese

Academy of Sciences urban forestry research.

Professor Francesco Ferrini Ph.D., Professor of Arboriculture, University of Florence, Department of Horticulture, Sesto

Fiorentino, FI, Italy Full Professor (Chairman) at the Department of Horticulture University

of Florence (Italy) -- He has published more than 150 scientific and technical papers in

Italian (82) and in English (69) in international referred and nationwide journals. He has

given more than 90 talks in numerous international and national congresses. Francesco is

also the immediate past Director of the ISA Italy and is an ISA board member.

Dr Alexia Stokes Dr. Stokes received her PhD from the University of York UK in 1994. In collaboration with the

Forestry Commission in Edinburgh, she studied the growth responses of young trees subjected

to wind loading. Alexia’s particular interest was to understand how tree growth and

architecture adapts to mechanical stresses, with a special focus on the root system. After post-

doctoral study in Germany, examining root wood strength, Alexia began work at INRA,

Bordeaux, France. Working principally on Maritime pine, Alexia and colleagues investigated tree root anchorage with

regard to wind storms. In 2005, Alexia began work in China for 2 years, studying how vegetation (plant root systems)

could be used to fix soil on slopes against landslides and erosion. She is now based at INRA, Montpellier, France and

continues her work on tree mechanics and slope stability in the French Alps and southern China. She has also done

research projects with Forestry Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). Recent interests include the ecophysiology of

tree root growth at high altitudes and in winter, as well as an understanding of global patterns in root functional traits.

Lauren Lanphear Mr. Lanphear served as the President of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) from

2007-2009. He also served as president of TCIA: Tree Care Industry Association in 1993 and

received the TCIA Award of Merit in 2004. He is also the President and owner of the Forest

City Tree Protection Co., Inc, in South Euclid, Ohio. The firm, founded by his grandfather in

1910, celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2010. His firm has received Excellence in

Arboriculture Awards for the following projects: Award of Distinction (1999) (For preservation

of historic White Oak tree on grounds of the St. Gregory the Great Church in South Euclid.)

Judges Award (2000) (For efforts to prepare 1998 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.) Arbor Day Award (2000)

Sharon Lilly Sharon Lilly, Director of Educational Goods and Services at the International Society of

Arboriculture, is a past president of ISA and former chair of the ISA Certification Board. She

has more than 25 years experience in the commercial sector as a climber and tree service owner,

and has also taught arboriculture at the college level. In addition to authoring and producing the

interactive CD-ROM series, she is the author of several popular books, including the ISA

Arborist Certification Study Guide, The Tree Climbers’ Guide, The Tree Worker’s Manual, and

Managing Golf Course Trees, as well as countless articles, workbooks, and other publications.

She has been instrumental in directing and producing many arborist training videos including the ArborMaster

Training Series, Basic Training for Tree Climbers, The Art and Science of Practical Rigging, and The Legends of

Arboriculture. Sharon continues to write and conduct seminars on many aspects of arboriculture.
