First boat of the Light in Amazonia program, which started operating on December 8, 1962
8 Luz na Amazônia
50 Years of full missionOn December 8, 1962, a small wooden boat set sail on the
Amazonian Basin with the goal of carrying out a special task: to bring hope
and the comfort of God’s Word to riverside dwellers. With this vessel, named
“Luz na Amazônia” by Bible Society of Brazil (SBB), an outreach program that
provides social, spiritual and medical assistance was born, which has been
transforming reality in the communities assisted for 50 years.
In this half century of adventures across the waters of Amazonian
rivers, nothing stood in the way of the boats “Luz na Amazônia” I, II and III,
their crew, partners and volunteers in accomplishing the mission entrusted
to them.
Throughout five decades, this rich universe of fortunes and
misfortunes faced by Amazonian riverside populations, as well as all the
assistance work carried out by the program, was registered with photos.
Some of those photos have been selected to tell part of the history
of this program and are published in this book.
The goal of this book is not to provide a historical and/or scientific
summary of this work, but rather to offer a collection of some of the touching
moments that have been kept for eternity. It is a look at lives that had the
opportunity to be changed through the full mission carried out by SBB’s Light
in Amazonia program.

The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.
Isaiah 58.6-7 (GNT)

In 1997, a new hospital-boat, “Luz na Amazônia III,”was added to the fleet in order to expand the scope of the mission of bringing the Bread of Life to riverside dwellers.

a Light that shines for 50 YearsThe year of 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of an important outreach
initiative that targets the Amazonian riverside population. Created by Bible
Society of Brazil (SBB), the Light in Amazonia program provides medical, social
and spiritual assistance to communities facing situations of extreme need,
through the hospital-boat “Luz na Amazônia III” and the Bible Boat “Luz na
Amazônia II,” both specially designed to navigate the Amazonian Basin. In
the last 10 years alone, 118,000 people living on the banks of the Amazon
River were benefited by the Light in Amazonia program.
Light in Amazonia’s inaugural trip took place on December 8,
1962. Since then, SBB organizes periodic trips with predetermined itineraries
reaching preferentially communities that are more isolated and distant from
urban centers. The hospital-boat, designed to offer quality medical assistance,
is equipped with infirmary, medical and dental consultation rooms, pharmacy
and a medical laboratory, which enables emergency treatments and even
small surgeries to be performed. Some of the program’s objectives are:
improve the quality of life of riverside dwellers; promote social transformation;
promote their spiritual and cultural development; strengthen family ties; and
increase the visibility of the region’s social reality.
The two vessels that currently operate in the program are used for
distinct, yet complementary, purposes in the States of Pará, Amazonas and
Amapá. The main goal of the “Luz na Amazônia II” Bible Boat–considered
a true floating bookstore–is to offer Scriptures for affordable prices, thus
making it easier for people, who otherwise would not have access to other
bookstores, to acquire them. In 2011 and early 2012, the Bible Boat was
completely refurbished to include a larger and more modern bookstore,
focused on the public, in addition to a cultural space called Bible Museum.
The “Luz na Amazônia III” boat visits small communities on the banks of the
region’s rivers and streams.
At first, the Light in Amazonia program’s task was to improve and

expand the distribution of Bibles in the Amazonian region. The initial project
of supplying Scriptures was soon expanded, becoming also a project of
philanthropy, medical, dental and pharmaceutical assistance, and donation
of clothing and food.
The success of the Light in Amazonia program inspired SBB to develop
similar initiatives in other regions of Brazil. Therefore, SBB established the Light
in Brazil program, which, in addition to the Amazonian region, operates in
the South, Southeast and Northeast of Brazil with two buses and a truck fully
equipped to provide medical and spiritual assistance to communities facing
situations of social risk and vulnerability.

“Ah! Se não fosse o Luz... A transformação espiritual é fundamental.
“I’m part of a project that saves lives. And I have the opportunity
to see people changing and transforming their reality, conditions of living,
and health. Light in Amazonia has taught me that everyone, regardless
of their social standing, ethnicity, status, group, is a human being needing
to feel loved. And that’s living the love of Christ.”
Abimael Pereira, volunteer for almost 20 years.
“If it weren’t for Light in Amazonia... Spiritual transformation is
essential. The Word of God can change everything. We start by showing
that everything in the Bible one can find in nature. It seems that they
open their closed eyes. It fits very well, and then life flows smoothly. It’s a
great privilege to work in Light in Amazonia; it’s a school where I’ll never
stop learning and graduate.”
Edyna Lia Parente, retired nurse, volunteer for 13 years.

Ela me encoraja a enfrentar tempestades.
“I’m 72 years old, and have a lot of respect for the Word of God.
It encourages me to face the ‘storms.’ I’ve learned that the best thing in
life is the friendship of riverside dwellers. I have worked with love and joy,
and planted a seed. My replacement is my son. Bringing the Word of God
to riverside dwellers is very important.”
Wilson Ferreira Duarte, Captain of the boat “Luz na Amazônia”
for 41 years.
Domingas do Carmo Pereira Monteiro, moradora do Igarapé Aura.
“Light in Amazonia encourages people to improve; it doesn’t
just deliver ready solutions. Light in Amazonia works with prevention
and spreads the Word of God. The rate of child prostitution was very
high before. But, today, we no longer see it in the community.”
Domingas do Carmo Pereira Monteiro, resident of Aura community.

“It’s a unique opportunity for the university. Maintaining a boat
is very hard. And the students can leave the confines of universities and
use their knowledge to help the communities. The university remained
closed just to students and professors for many years. It’s an opportunity
to get acquainted with our people. Medicine students didn’t know the
reality faced by riverside dwellers.”
Marli de Fátima Carvalho de Melo, Assistant Professor from Federal
University of Pará, partner in Light in Amazonia for eight years.

God, because it changes our communities, our lives. A new light appears
at the end of the tunnel when we know that Light in Amazonia is coming.”
Mário Araújo, açaí harvester and leader of Espírito Santo community.

“This project helped me after I reached rock bottom. I like to
think that Light in Amazonia came to the island to assist me. I was in
the desert. I had lost my brother and my husband. And my daughter
was in a serious accident. They pulled me out of rock bottom by
conveying care, love, and security.”
Maria José Machado da Cruz, teacher and leader of Ilha Grande
community.
“Light in Amazonia is very important to us, because it brings
both spiritual remedy and material remedy. We don’t have any medical
assistance here. When we need it, we must travel hours by boat. Often
there is no time. I’ve seen a lot of people die, both children and adults,
during those trips. I thank God for your work. (Colossians 2:5) (GNT).”
Maria Eunice de Moraes Ramos, homemaker from Vila de
Arapiranga community, Barcarena.
“Esse projeto me tirou do fundo do poço. Eles me puxaram do fundo do poço, transmitindo carinho, amor e segurança.”

“A Bíblia me ensinou muitas coisas.
“The Bible is the most important book in the world. It’s
wonderful, because by reading the Bible we get to know the truth,
and we can lead a better life. Light in Amazonia brings it all to us:
medical assistance, tests, medicine, Bibles. It’s truly wonderful.”
Adoniete Cardoso Reis, agricultural worker, resident of São
Benedito community, Acará.
“The Bible has taught me a lot of things. I learned to be
humbler, love my fellow human beings, lead a better life, and believe
more and more in God. In addition to the spiritual comfort, the
program offers good medical assistance, which wouldn’t be available
without Light in Amazonia.”
Sandro da Silva Pereira, 28 years old, agricultural worker from Ilha
do Murutucu community.
Adoniete Cardoso Reis, lavrador, morador do
Furo São Benedito, Acará.

“The Bible brings a lot of good things to our lives. I discovered
them little by little by reading the Bible when I felt discouraged.
Sometimes I read a verse that I could not understand, so I read it again.
Then I started to understand that the Bible offers us comfort and
shows when we are behaving wrongly. I just see a doctor when the
Light in Amazonia boat comes to our village. You know, we desperately
need such help here.
“More than bringing relief to our bodies, the program also
brought a little peace to our spirits. The beautiful words said by the
volunteers encouraged us to look for God’s things. The Word of God
changed numerous families, including mine. When I had a serious
problem, I realized that, instead of crying, I could seek comfort in the
Word of God.”
Ana Maria Pereira Gomes, resident of Olaria community,
Barcarena.

Hoje, tenho Deus no coração. Vocês deram o tratamento, deram o remédio, me ensinaram como cuidar melhor dele no dia a dia. Hoje, meu filho está muito bem.” Roselene de Oliveira Conceição, moradora do Iagarapé de Genipaúba, Acará.
“Every day I read the Bible I received from you. Today, I have
God in my heart. I’ll never forget that you saved the life of my son. I
raise my hands to the sky and thank for the day you came, when he
was still a baby and was very sick. You provided him with treatment
and medicine, and taught me how to take better care of him on a daily
basis. Today, my son is very well cared for.” Roselene de Oliveira Conceição, resident of Genipaúba community, Acará.
“The difficulties faced in the beginning, when we had a
wooden boat, became great opportunities to confirm fraternal
values, with the effective participation of everyone in the planning
and organization phases, and also generated professional and
personal satisfaction, with the possibility of training new professionals
to fight the social inequalities faced by the Amazonian population.
And we are doing good things based on Christian love.”
Placídia Rodrigues da Rosa, Light in Amazonia volunteer since 1984.

“I dreamed of having a Bible. But I couldn’t afford it. My aunt
said that God was going to give me a Bible. That was when Light in
Amazonia came, and I got my Bible. Now, I open my Bible, read it and
see that it always has an answer for me. Light in Amazonia brings food,
joy and clothing to us. My daughter’s first pair of shoes was given by
Light in Amazonia when she was 6 years old.”
Mônica da Silva, homemaker from Ilha Grande community.
“I got my first Bible from the Light in Amazonia program. The
Bible contains everything that is good. Through it, we can strengthen
our spiritual life, have inner peace and learn about God and Jesus. The
Bible is food, a relief for our soul. Those who live in riverside communities
in the Amazonian region have to travel to get medical assistance. This
is hard, because the distances are very long, and we depend on boats
and on the tide. Therefore, it’s very good when the assistance comes
to us, as it is the case of the Light in Amazonia program.”
Graciete Cardoso Reis, student from Ilha de Combu community.
“Sometimes in our life only God can help us. Many times, in
a difficult moment, I opened the Bible and started to read it. Then,
it was like a balsam, like cold water that falls on top of a burn, like
something that cleanses, that removes the weight, the pain. This is
the Word of God. Light in Amazonia is very necessary here. I want to
thank everyone who has been helping Light in Amazonia. I ask God
to bless them more and more. Here we need a lot of help. But we
know that there are people in the Amazonian region who need it
more than we do.“
José do Carmo e Silva, açaí harvester from Ilha de Combu
community.
“Light in Amazonia brings hope and renews dreams.”
Adriana Monteiro da Costa, resident of Aurá community.

So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us. If our gift is to speak God’s message, we should do it according to the faith that we have; if it is to serve, we should serve; if it is to teach, we should teach; if it is to encourage others, we should do so. Whoever shares with others should do it generously; whoever has authority should work hard; whoever shows kindness to others should do it cheerfully. Romans 12.6-8 (GNT).
