RED CROSS BLOODMOBILE St. Joan of Arc will be sponsoring their first blood drive of 2015 on February 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the school gym. This is such a good day for all to give from the heart on this Valentine’s Day. Give a unit or two of your life sustaining blood. Instead of the cookies the American Red Cross staff furnishes, we will try to round up some homemade Valentine cookies! (Any volunteers? Let Gene or Dennis hear from you!) Phone calling to potential donors has started by our won-derful group of volunteers. Make their work easier by contact-ing Gene or Dennis at [email protected] or (419) 861-0161 to reserve your time.

truth as it makes itself clear. Whether he is a pastor, a bishop, or a pope, the priest of God must lead from a heart full of love and with a mind humbly open to the truth. Teaching. Our faith is a revealed faith, mean-ing we don’t just make it up as we go along. It comes to us from the words and deeds of Jesus Christ, who is the revelation of God the Father. To stray from the teachings of Jesus is to venture into dangerous territory. This is why a prospec-tive priest must spend nine years in formation after high school. The first four years of this for-mation focus on the study of critical thinking (philosophy). The last five years focus on the study of divine revelation (theology) and include a lengthy period of pastoral service. Some people think this formation is too much. I question whether it is enough! The People of God deserve the best. Mystery. The word “sacrament” means mys-tery. Christ reveals the mystery of the Father. The seven sacraments reveal the mystery of Christ. The priest administers the sacraments to the People of God so that the mystery of Christ might come alive within them. In doing this, the priest must not promote himself but must strive to be an icon/image of Christ to God’s people. This fact should humble the priest, because it means his individual personality is far less im-portant to the People of God than his simple role of being an image of Christ. God’s plan for his Church includes priests. Each parish community is gifted with potential priestly vocations. It is up to us as parishioners to pray for, promote, and nurture those vocations on a regular basis. Lately, I am aware of some really positive movement in this regard, so please keep that in your intentions! You may notice some young men in cassock and surplice assisting the servers at our larger Sunday Masses. These fel-lows are Masters of Ceremony and the primary requirement is that they are at least open to the possibility of becoming a priest. To even be open to a priestly vocation in today’s culture calls for some bravery. Feel free to encourage them. Next week’s article will be on religious vocations. Yours in Christ, Fr. Hertzfeld

SACRAMENTAL PREP TEACHER NEEDED We need a teacher for our Sacramental PREP Class. For those of you who are not familiar with Sacramental PREP, it is a special class designed to prepare students who have missed the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion which are usually received in the second grade. The class meets week-ly on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:15 in the school and consists of seven students from 3rd - 6th grade. This group re-ceived First Reconciliation on December 3 and are now prepar-ing for their First Holy Communion on May 2. Due to a serious family health issue, the current teacher will need to take a leave of absence for the rest of the year beginning on February 4. The children have worked hard and are looking forward to the time when they can join all of us at the table for Holy Communion. Please consider giving of your time and talent to this important ministry. You will be making a difference in the lives of seven great kids! To volunteer or for further information, please con-tact Terri La Follette at (419) 866-6177 ext. 105 or [email protected].

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: YOUR GENEROSITY AT WORK During the last three months (October, November, and De-cember 2014), our St. Vincent de Paul Conference has been able to assist 67 families (177 people) in their hour of need. Thanks to the generosity of the parishioners at St. Joan of Arc, we have been able to offer support with such items as furniture, groceries, utilities (electricity and gas), rent, and transportation (gas). In rare circumstances, such as 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, our confer-ence may offer financial support to the national St. Vincent de Paul Disaster Relief fund. We always need more volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a Vincentian, please contact Danita Dumas at [email protected] or (419) 867-9507.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Responding to the call of Jesus, St. Joan of Arc Parish is a Catholic Community, guided by the Holy Spirit,
striving to do God’s will. We encourage spiritual growth and invite full, active and conscious participation
of all generations through prayer, stewardship and fellowship.
JANUARY 25 – “ALL FOR ONE” Following last week’s night on the Church’s unity, we will explore further how to unify with one anoth-er in the faith. Our night begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner.
***ATTENTION PARENTS AND PARISH GROUPS***
We need your help! In order to best serve the teens of our parish, we do our best to feed them dinner each week prior to our Life Nights. But unfortunately committing to making food each week would reduce the quality of our program with our focus on food, not the teens. This is where you come in! If you are at all interested in provid-ing food for approximately 40 people, please contact Jo-seph Getsi at [email protected]! We would greatly appreciate any help we can get and we’d love for you to join us for our night!

TLC: THE GOSPEL OF LIFE LIVE! Join us Wednesday, January 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church where we will be delving into the beauty and richness of our faith. Led by hosts Nick De La Torre and Deacon Ed Maher, this month we will be talking about the sanctity of the marital embrace. All are welcome to this great discussion but we extend a special invitation and encouragement to young single, dating and married adults.
