Seeking a point where Modern Jazz,Contemporary Music

and Free Jazz meet in Japan:Instances from the Activities in Sogetsu Art Center

and New Century Music Institute(Shinseiki Ongaku Kenkyujo)

The aim of this paper is to examine how jazz music and academic contemporary music

related each others in the 1960s Japanese avant-garde music scenes. Especially we focused on

the activities of the two music scenes, 1) experiments of the Modern Jazz music by the

Contemporary music composers at Sougetsu Art Center,the mecca of the avant-garde art scenes

in 1960s Japan,and 2)references of the contemporary music method in New Century Music

Institute(Shinseiki Ongaku Kenkyujo),one of the basic point of the Japanese free jazz scene.
