Munster champs now have Cavan in their sights See P4, 5 RUGBY Horan calls it a day after a stellar career MUNSTER’S most capped forward, Marcus Horan, yesterday announced that he will retire from professional rugby at the end of the season. The announcement, made first of all to his team-mates ahead of training in CIT, will bring the curtain down on a marvellous career stretching back 14 seasons with the province. During that time, he became Munster’s most capped forward with 224 caps and also won 67 senior international caps. Horan earned his first senior competitive cap in the Interprovincial series in August 1999 against Leinster and the first of his 84 Heineken Cup caps came later that season when he came on as a replacement for Peter Clohessy in Munster’s 32-10 win over Pontypridd at Thomond Park. He has been involved in all the great games Heineken Cup games, bar last weekend, including his Heineken Cup debut against Colomiers in the province’s historic first victory on French soil over Colomiers at Stade les Sept Derniers in 1999. He showed his talent that day by playing at loosehead, when he came on as a sub for Peter Clohessy, before switching to tighthead for the injured John Hayes. See P46-47. By SEÁN McCARTHY Munster’s Marcus Horan set to retire. Rebel minors show true grit CORK minor hurling boss Pat Kenneally hailed the spirit of his young guns after they fin- ished strongly to defeat Clare in the Munster championship opener at Páirc Uí Rinn last night. The Rebels coughed up an early eight-point lead to the Banner, be- fore a late flurry of points from Pa O’Callaghan and Anthony Spillane gave them a 3-15 to 2-14 victory. “I think for Cork hurling at the moment it’s a huge step,” admitted Kenneally after what was the county’s first win over a team oth- er than Kerry in the provincial area since 2010. “It wasn’t pretty by any means and we’d be disappointed with a lot of the performance but it was not about performance, it was all about getting the result and to get this mon- key off our back. We succeeded in do- ing that in the second-half when our backs were against the wall.” Reluctant to single out individuals, the team boss did acknowledge the ef- fort of Ballyhea’s Pa O’Callaghan. “I suppose there has been a lot of pressure on Pa over the years, but he showed a bit of class when it was wanted there in the end. “He banged over a couple of great points and it’s about doing it now on a consistent basis. I told him what we thought at half-time and he reacted very well in the second-half.’’ The Newcestown man admitted how vital the win was for Cork hurling overall. “It was huge. Whether we like it or not there is a lot of pressure mounting around us and this is something off our back. “The manner of it, to eke it out there in the end tells you something about the heart in the team. There was a small bit of a question whether the heart had gone out around here when it came to the physical stuff, but I don’t think we were found wanting.” Cork now face the winners of the Clare and Waterford playoff in June. Meanwhile, the senior selectors have brought William Egan and Shane O’Neill back into the line-up to face Clare in Sunday’s relegation play-off in Limerick, 3pm. The duo, who were injured against Kilkenny, replace Killian Murphy and Cian McCarthy, with Lorcán McLoughlin reverting to midfield and Pa Cronin switching to wing-forward.
