Era un dimarts de setembre, i l’estiu els abandonava tan ràpidament com trepidant era l’inici de curs a

l’escola. La Laura i en Joan estaven jugant a rugbi a l’hora del pati amb els seus companys i companyes,

feia uns dies que els n’havien ensenyat a classe d’educació física i el joc havia causat furor.

—Fora seva! Traiem nosaltres la touche! —exclamà la Janira.

—Va, col·loquem-nos! —els escridassava en Guillem, emocionat per la passió que posava en el partit—.

Leo, vés a darrere, la gent més alta del nostre equip ha d’estar amb la més alta del seu.

En aquell precís instant per megafonia es va sentir com cridaven a recepció en Joan i la Laura, fet que

originà que bona part dels que s’havien posat a la touche es despistessin. En l’embolic que generà tot

plegat, la Janira va treure la touche, i en saltar la Dana i en Joel van xocar amb el cap.

—Quin mal que els deu haver fet!

—No cal que ho diguis!

Encara els haurem de dur a fer que

els mirin, no fos cas que tinguin un

blau al cervell —bromejà la Laura.

It was a Tuesday in September and the summer was abandoning them just as fast as the new school year was commencing. It was playtime and Laura and Joan were playing rugby with their friends. They had been taught how to play some days ago in their PE classes and the game had caused a furore. ‘Offside! It’s our throw-in!’, exclaimed Janira.‘Come on! Let’s get in place!’, shouted Guillem, excited by the game. ‘Leo, go behind, the tallest players on our team have to be with the tallest players on theirs.’At that precise moment, a call for Laura and Joan was heard over the megaphone from reception, completely distracting most of those getting ready for the throw-in. In the big muddle that followed, Janira took the throw-in and Dana and Joel jumped up and banged heads together.‘Uff. That must have really hurt!’‘You can say that again! We might have to take them to get that looked at in case they’ve got a concussion,’ joked Laura.

There was a woman waiting for them in the corridor: it was Marina, a researcher from the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology. She had come to get Laura and Joan to help them on an urgent mission. ‘We need you to help us. Alex, one of the other palaeontologists, has hurt himself, just when we’re working on a really urgent project. He broke his leg when we were investigating the ichnites from Fumanya.’‘The what?’, exclaimed Joan and Laura in unison.‘The ichnites: the fossilized footprints left by dinosaurs that allow us to study them today. But how can it be that you two don’t know such a basic thing? Aren’t you supposed to have magic powers?’, Marina asked them in a concerned voice.‘Ehem! It’s because we haven’t activated them yet,’ Joan said apologetically. ‘Would you be able to stop at the next service station, please?’

Al vestíbul hi havia una dona

esperant-los: era la Marina, una

investigadora de l’Institut Català

de Paleontologia, que els venia a

buscar perquè la Laura i en Joan

l’ajudessin en una missió urgent.

—Necessitem que ens ajudeu.

L’Àlex, el meu company

paleontòleg, s’ha fet mal, i just

quan estem en un projecte súper

urgent. Es va trencar una cama

quan estàvem investigant les

icnites de Fumanya.

—Les què? —exclamaren a

l’uníson en Joan i la Laura.

—Les icnites, els rastres de

petjades deixats pels dinosaures

que es van fossilitzar, gràcies

a les quals ara els podem

investigar. Però com pot ser

que no sapigueu això tan

bàsic? Vosaltres no teníeu

poders màgics? —els preguntà

intranquil·la la Marina.

—Glups! És que no els hem

activat —s’excusà en Joan—.

Pots parar a la propera àrea de

servei, sisplau?

‘Combine our forces!’, repeated Joan and Laura four times.Their powers were now ready, which meant they could start investigating like real palaeontologists.

—Unim les nostres energies! —repetiren quatre vegades la Laura i en Joan. Els poders ja

estaven a punt, ja podien investigar com una paleontòloga i un paleontòleg de debò.

A Fumanya, al Berguedà, els esperaven dos components més de l’equip, l’Anna

Maria i en Lluís, que de seguida els van acompanyar a veure les icnites de

dinosaures. En veure-les, la Laura i en Joan es van quedar meravellats.

—És increïble! Com pot ser que caminessin en vertical? Tenien ales?

—No, Laura. Els que van deixar les icnites no tenien ales; quan els dinosaures

van deixar aquestes petjades el terra era horitzontal —li aclarí l’Anna Maria.

—Amb el pas de milions d’anys es van aixecar els Pirineus i això va fer que el

terra quedés gairebé vertical, oi? —suggerí en Joan.

—Això mateix, ara està a seixanta graus d’inclinació.

El problema que tenim és que la roca

on van ser impreses les icnites és molt

fràgil, hi ha un gran perill que

es perdin les icnites de

dinosaure, i això seria una

desgràcia —els exposà en Lluís.

Two more members of the team, Anna Maria and Lluís, were waiting for them in Fumanya in El Berguedà. Once there, they took them straight away to see the dinosaur ichnites. Laura and Joan were amazed when they saw them.‘It’s incredible! How could they walk vertically? Did they have wings?’

‘No, Laura. The ones who left the ichnites didn’t have wings; when the dinosaurs left these

footprints the ground was flat,’ added Anna Maria.

‘The Pyrenees emerged gradually over

millions of years and that made the land become

almost vertical. Isn’t that the case?’, suggested Joan.

‘Right now there’s a gradient of sixty degrees. The problem we have is

that the rock where the ichnites left their mark is

very fragile and there’s a real danger that the dinosaur

ichnites might be lost. That would be a real

disaster,’ explained Lluís.

—I tant, haurem d’anar per feina,

si no el clima i l’aigua aniran

esborrant aquests valuosos

rastres. Com ho teniu pensat fer?

—Doncs abans ho fèiem

directament baixant amb cordes i

analitzant directament les icnites...

—I així va ser com es va fer mal

l’Àlex, oi que sí?

—Efectivament. Per sort, ara

hem descobert un nou sistema

que ens permetrà guardar totes

les petjades sense córrer gaires

riscos i no patir perquè es facin

malbé sense haver-les investigat.

Però ho hem de fer molt de

pressa, han pronosticat fortes

tempestes per d’aquí a tres dies,

i no ens volem arriscar a perdre

cap de les més de dues mil dues-

centes icnites que hi ha a la paret.

‘It certainly would. We’ll have to get straight to work. If not, the climate and the rain will gradually wear away those valuable traces. How do you want to do it?’‘Well, we used to do it directly, dropping down on ropes and analysing the ichnites on the spot…’‘And that’s how Àlex hurt himself, isn’t it?’‘Exactly. Fortunately we’ve now discovered a new system that allows us to save all the footprints without taking too many risks and without worrying about damaging them before researching them. But we have to do it really quickly. They’re forecasting heavy storms in three days’ time and we don’t want to risk losing any of the over two thousand and two hundred ichnites that can be found on the rock wall.’

Tot seguit els van conduir on tenien

l’aparell que els ajudaria a guardar

totes les petjades, que era un

escàner làser. Un cop instruïts en

el seu ús, la Laura i en Joan van

començar a escanejar les icnites per

guardar-les a l’ordinador, de manera

que no es perdrien encara que el

clima o el temps les malmetés.

—Afanya’t, que aviat es farà fosc

i el divendres al matí m’agradaria

poder dur les petjades digitalitzades

a l’Institut Català de Paleontologia,

perquè les puguin començar a

estudiar.

Without wasting any more time, they were taken to the apparatus that would help them save all the footprints. It was a laser scanner. Once they had been shown how to use it, Laura and Joan started to scan the ichnites to be able to save them on the computer. This way they would never be lost, even if they were damaged by the climate or by bad weather.‘Be quick! It’ll be dark soon and I’d like to be able to take the digitized footprints to the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology on Friday morning so they can start studying them.’

Es feia de nit sobre el campament.

Després de sopar amb tot l’equip

de paleontologia, la Laura i en Joan,

exhausts, es retiraven a la seva

tenda, per poder recuperar energies

per a un altre dia de recerca intensa

que els esperava l’endemà...

—Laura! Laura! —cridava esfereït en

Joan sense poder articular cap més

paraula.

—Però, Joan, què et passa? No

et sembla que és una mica tard

per fer aquests crits? Despertaràs

tot el campament —continuava la

Laura sense adonar-se que un gran

dinosaure s’abalançava sobre ella—.

Però per què te’n vas corrent, Joan?

—exclamà la Laura, que en girar-se

va emetre un crit ensordidor que va

despertar tot el campament.

Night fell over the encampment. After dinner with the palaeontology team, a very tired Laura and Joan retired to their tent to rest up for another intense day of research the following day…‘Laura! Laura!’, shouted a terrified Joan, who was unable to utter another word.‘Joan, what’s the matter? Don’t you think it’s a bit late to be shouting out like that? You’ll wake up the entire encampment,’ continued Laura, not realising that an enormous dinosaur was rushing towards her. ‘Why are you running away, Joan?’, exclaimed Laura, who then turned round and let out an almighty scream which woke up the whole encampment.

—No passa res, es veu que

la Laura tenia un somni molt

emocionant —va dir en Joan

rient a en Lluís i l’Anna Maria, que

havien anat corrents a la tenda en

sentir els crits.

—No te’n riguis! És que era tan

real... Érem al campament i de

sobte per darrere m’apareixia

un Pararhabdodon que em volia

atacar...

—Si el Pararhabdodon era

herbívor! —va bromejar l’Anna

Maria.

—Tot i que no se sap que

caminessin per aquesta zona,

sinó més aviat

per Isona, al Pallars Jussà —

assenyalà en Lluís, afegint-se a la

gresca.

‘It’s okay. It seems that Laura had a very scary dream,’ said Joan, laughing at Lluís and Anna Maria, who had come running to the tent on hearing the screams.‘Stop laughing! It was so real… We were at the encampment when suddenly a Pararhabdodon came up behind me and wanted to attack me...’‘But the Pararhabdodon was a herbivore!’, joked Anna Maria.‘Although they weren’t thought to have roamed around this area. They were usually found in Isona in El Pallars Jussà,’ pointed out Lluís, joining in the fun.

—Sí, és clar, jo tenia davant aquell dinosaure que devia fer sis o set metres,

i li anava a preguntar si s’havia perdut de casa o si menjava carn o plantes,

oi? A més, en Joan, en comptes d’ajudar-me ha fugit corrent, i m’ha deixat

sola. Tu creus que m’havies de deixar allà sola amb aquell tros de dinosaure!

—Però, Laura, recorda que ha estat un somni. A més, ja saps que mai no

t’ho faria, mai no et deixaria sola, que junts formem un gran equip.

—Apa, a dormir, que demà intentarem acabar d’escanejar tota la paret.

—Sí, i a veure si tenim temps d’investigar una mica els ous de dinosaure.

Vau dir que a Fumanya també hi ha postes amb ous de dinosaures, oi? —

digué la Laura, ja refeta de l’ensurt i amb més ganes d’investigar que mai.

‘Yeah, sure. I had that dinosaur in front of me that must have been about six or seven metres tall and I was supposed to ask it if it was lost or if it ate meat or plants! Is that what you’re saying? And instead of helping me, Joan ran off leaving me on my own. Do you really think it was right to leave me there on my own with that massive dinosaur?’‘But Laura, remember that it was a dream. What’s more, you know I’d never do that. I’d never leave you on your own. We’re a team.’‘Come on. Let’s get to sleep. We’ll finish off scanning the rest of the wall tomorrow.’‘Yes. And let’s see if we have a bit of time left to investigate dinosaur eggs. Didn’t you say that there are also posts with dinosaur eggs in Fumanya?’, asked Laura, fully recovered from her fright and more keen to investigate than ever before.

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, Joan and Laura got on with the scanning and even managed to see a couple of Pyrenean chamois on the top of the mountain. In the afternoon, Lluís and Anna Maria took over, which meant they were able to take a more detailed look at the dinosaur footprints on the computer.‘Look! Can you see these titanosaur footprints that go in parallel? They’re from that row that you can see on the wall.’‘Wow! That means they went together in groups. But their front extremities are much smaller…’‘Yes, it’s really strange. What a big difference in size. Our hands are not so small compared to our feet; and have you seen that their hands are a half-moon shape?’ ‘Yes, but the back ones look more like triangles, don’t they? And look! One, two, three, four fingers.’

L’endemà al matí, després d’un bon

esmorzar, en Joan i la Laura van

estar escanejant, i fins i tot van poder

veure una parella d’isards a dalt de la

muntanya. A la tarda, en Lluís i l’Anna

Maria els van rellevar, així que van

poder començar a veure amb més

detall les petjades de dinosaure a

l’ordinador.

—Mira, veus aquestes petjades de

titanosaure que van en paral·lel?, són

d’aquella filera tan llarga que es veu a

la paret.

—Ostres, això vol dir que anaven

junts, en grup. Ara, que les extremitats

anteriors són molt més petites...

—Sí, és curiós. Quina diferència de

mida, nosaltres no tenim les mans tan

petites en comparació dels peus; a

més, les mans tenen com una forma

de mitja lluna.

—I, en canvi, les del darrere semblen

gairebé un triangle, oi? I mira, un, dos,

tres, quatre dits.

—Voleu veure com es creu que era el titanosaure

que deixava aquestes petjades?

—Sí! —cridaren al mateix temps la Laura i en Joan.

—Aquí el teniu. Alguns exemplars arribaven a pesar

més de deu tones.

—Ostres! La veritat és que fan honor al seu nom de

saures titans —va dir en Joan, mentre la Laura es

mirava bocabadada la pantalla.

—Realment és increïble que aquests animals tan

gegantins poguessin sortir d’ous que només feien

uns vint centímetres de diàmetre.

—I tant! Per fer-se tan grans devien estar ben

alimentats, oi Laura?

—Glups! Doncs sí...

‘Would you like to see what we think the titanosaur who left these footprints looked like?’‘Yes!’, Laura and Joan shouted at the same time.‘Here it is. Some of them weighed up to ten tonnes.’‘Wow! They really are a credit to the name Titanosaurus,’ said Joan, while Laura gazed at the screen in amazement.

‘It really is incredible that these gigantic animals could hatch out of eggs that were

only about twenty centimetres in diameter.’‘It certainly is!

They must have eaten pretty well to have been able to grow to

such a size. Don’t you think, Laura?’‘Golly! Yes, they must have done!’

L’endemà al matí la Laura i en Joan havien d’anar a Sabadell, a la seu de l’Institut Català de

Paleontologia, a completar la seva part de recerca. S’acomiadaren de l’equip amb una forta abraçada, i

l’Anna Maria els deixà al bell mig de Sabadell.

—Mira, Joan, una Fringilla coelebs com la que vam veure a Fumanya!

—Va, Laura, no t’encantis amb els ocells, que se’ns estan a punt d’acabar els poders màgics —li va

respondre un xic esquerp en Joan, que tenia la sensació que la Laura li estava prenent el pèl.

The morning after, Laura and Joan had to go to Sabadell, to the headquarters of the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology, to complete their part of the research.They gave the team a big hug goodbye and Anna Maria left them in the centre of Sabadell.‘Look, Joan, a Fringilla coelebs like the one we saw in Fumanya!’‘Come on Laura! Don’t get distracted with the birds, our magic powers are nearly running out,’ replied Joan a little coldly, since he thought that Laura was pulling his leg a little now.

Once at the Institute, they dropped off the images that they had scanned and got ready to take the train back home.‘It’s such a shame we couldn’t investigate the eggs or the ichnites in 3D…’‘Not to mention the palm tree fossils. Well, now you know… You’ll just have to study to be a palaeontologist when you’re older.’‘That’s not a bad idea at all! I’ll tell you what though, I bet Valèria and Gorka would jump at the chance, seeing how much they’re fascinated by dinosaurs.’

Un cop a l’institut, van deixar les imatges que tenien

escanejades i es disposaren a agafar el ferrocarril per

tornar a casa.

—Em sap tan greu no haver pogut investigar els ous o

les icnites en 3D...

—I no t’oblidis dels fòssils de fulles de palmera. Ja ho

saps, hauràs

d’estudiar per fer de paleontòleg quan siguis gran.

—No estaria gens malament! Ara, que segur

que la Valèria i

en Gorka no s’ho pensen dues vegades,

tant com els fascinen

els dinosaures...

Just quan esperaven a l’andana dels ferrocarrils, en Joan va donar

l’esquena a la Laura, i aquesta va aprofitar per posar-se una careta de

dinosaure ferotge i espantar en Joan.

—Aaaaaah! Però, Laura! Què vols, que m’agafi un atac de cor o què!?

—Fuig, covard! Fes-ho com ho feies al meu somni —cridava la Laura

fent veure que l’atacava mentre tots dos reien pels descosits.

While waiting on the train platform, Joan turned his back on Laura for a moment. Making the most of the opportunity, Laura put on a fierce dinosaur face to scare Joan. ‘Aaaah! Laura! What are you trying to do? Give me a heart attack or what?’‘Run for it, you coward! Go on, run away like you did in my dream,’ shrieked Laura, pretending to attack him as they both laughed their heads off.
