God expects us to cultivate and

develop the gifts He has given us

and then generously give back a

portion with increase. He doesn’t

intend for us to waste or hoard the

gifts He has given us so

generously; He expects us to grow

our gifts, use them wisely and be

generous with them. Sadly, many

of us are not generous in

proportion to all that God has

given us.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5; 1 Thes 5:1-6;

Mt 25:14-30 or 25:14-15, 19-21

The Gospel this Sunday is the Parable of the Talents. The passage from St

Matthew (25:14-30) tells of a man who, before setting off on a journey, calls

his servants and entrusts his assets to them in talents, extremely valuable

ancient coins. The first and second servants each double the initial value of the

capital. The third, however, for fear of losing it all, buries the talent he received

in a hole. Upon the master’s return, the first two receive praise and rewards,

while the third, who returned only the coin he had received, is reproached and

punished.

The meaning of this is clear. The man in the parable represents Jesus, we are

the servants, and the talents are the inheritance that the Lord entrusts to us.

What is the inheritance? His Word, the Eucharist, faith in the Heavenly Father,

his forgiveness..., in other words, so many things, his most precious treasures.

This is the inheritance that He entrusts to us, not only to safeguard, but to make

fruitful! While in common usage the term “talent” indicates a pronounced

individual quality, for example talent in music, in sport, and so on, in the

parable, talent represent the riches of the Lord, which He entrusts to us so that

we make them bear fruit. The hole dug into the soil by the “wicked and slothful

servant” (v. 26) points to the fear of risk which blocks creativity and the

fruitfulness of love, because the fear of the risks of love stop us.

This parable urges us not to conceal our faith and our belonging to Christ, not

to bury the Word of the Gospel, but to let it circulate in our life, in our

relationships, in concrete situations, as a strength which galvanizes, which

purifies, which renews. Similarly, the forgiveness, which the Lord grants us

particularly in the Sacrament of Reconciliation: let us not keep it closed within

ourselves, but let us allow it to emit its power.

The Virgin Mary embodied this attitude in the fullest and most beautiful way.

She received and welcomed the most sublime gift, Jesus himself, and in turn

she offered Him to mankind with a generous heart. Let us ask Her to help us to

be “good and faithful servants” in order to participate “in the joy of our Lord”.

El Evangelio de este domingo es la parábola de los talentos, tomada de san

Mateo (25, 14-30). Relata acerca de un hombre que, antes de partir para un

viaje, convocó a sus siervos y les confió su patrimonio en talentos, monedas

antiguas de grandísimo valor. El primer y el segundo siervo duplicaron cada

uno el capital inicial; el tercero, en cambio, por miedo a perder todo, sepultó el

talento recibido en un hoyo. Al regresar el patrón, los dos primeros recibieron

la alabanza y la recompensa, mientras que el tercero, que restituyó sólo la

moneda recibida, fue reprendido y castigado.

Es claro el significado de esto. El hombre de la parábola representa a Jesús, los

siervos somos nosotros y los talentos son el patrimonio que el Señor nos confía.

¿Cuál es el patrimonio? Su Palabra, la Eucaristía, la fe en el Padre celestial, su

perdón... en definitiva, muchas cosas, sus bienes más preciosos. Este es el

patrimonio que Él nos confía. No sólo para custodiar, sino para fructificar.

Mientras que en el uso común el término «talento» indica una destacada

cualidad individual —por ejemplo el talento en la música, en el deporte, etc.—,

en la parábola los talentos representan los bienes del Señor, que Él nos confía

para que los hagamos fructificar. El hoyo cavado en la tierra por el «siervo

negligente y holgazán» (v. 26) indica el miedo a arriesgar que bloquea la

creatividad y la fecundidad del amor. Porque el miedo a los riesgos del amor

nos bloquea.

Esta parábola nos alienta a no esconder nuestra fe y nuestra pertenencia a

Cristo, a no sepultar la Palabra del Evangelio, sino a hacerla circular en nuestra

vida, en las relaciones, en las situaciones concretas, como fuerza que pone en

crisis, que purifica y renueva. Así también el perdón que el Señor nos da

especialmente en el sacramento de la Reconciliación: no lo tengamos cerrado

en nosotros mismos, sino dejemos que irradie su fuerza.

La Virgen María encarna esta actitud de la forma más hermosa y más plena.

Ella recibió y acogió el don más sublime, Jesús en persona, y a su vez lo

ofreció a la humanidad con corazón generoso. A ella le pedimos que nos ayude

a ser «siervos buenos y fieles», para participar «en el gozo de nuestro Señor».
