Function
The Present Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that began in the past and continues to now. We also use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important.

“since” specifies the starting point “for” specifies the amount of time

‘since’ We use 'since' to specify the starting point
in the past
“I've known Sam since 1992.”

‘for’ We use 'for' to specify an amount of time (minutes, hours, weeks, months, years)
“She’s known Sam for 10 years.” “We’ve been here for 3 hours.”
