A reamer is manufactured from a triangular or square steel wire that is twisted to givethe typical shape of a reamer. The angle between the long-axis and the cutting blade issmall, which is why preparation by reamer is effective only in rotating motion.
The tip of the instrument is cutting which makes a reamer suitable for the preparation of straight canals only without the risk of ledging.

-files are manufactured from square or sometimes triangular steel wire that istwisted to give the typical shape of a -file. The angle between the long-axis and thecutting blade is greater than in a reamer, and therefore preparation by a -file iseffective both in rotary and filing motion.
The tip of the instrument is cutting which makes the -file best suited for the preparation of straight canals. mall -files (' / "# - $ ) can be also used in curvedcanals without the risk of ledging. mall -files are particularly good for the initial
preparation of very narrow canals.
