DANIEL R. WOOLFPrincipal and Vice-Chancellor

As the 2014-15 athletic season draws to a close, I am pleased to offer my congratulations to our student-athletes, teams, coaches and support staff for another great season of Gaels Sport. This 79th edition of the Colour Awards will pay tribute to the accomplishments and achievements over the past year, but it also serves as an important connection to an athletic tradition and legacy of generations of student-athletes who have worn the tri-colour.

This is an exciting time for sport, recreation and physical activity at Queen’s. In 2016, thanks to the generosity of our alumni, we will celebrate the construction of a revitalized Richardson Stadium for our student-athletes and fans to enjoy for years to come.

To our graduating athletes who will soon depart University life to take on new and exciting challenges, I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and of future Gaels as these athletes pursue the legacy that you have helped to inspire.

Thank you for your contributions to Queen’s and to the important role that you have played in our rich history of sport.

Cha Gheill!

ANN TIERNEYVice-Provost & Dean of Student Affairs

Another athletic year has drawn to a close and it gives me great pleasure to share in celebrating the accomplishments of our student-athletes and teams at this year’s Colour Awards.

Tonight we are recognizing the student-athletes and teams who have earned our highest honours. We are also celebrating a tremendous athletic community, one that supports and inspires, that is active in community service, and that represents Queen’s as both competitors and ambassadors. Our student-athletes continue to exhibit both academic and athletic excellence. This year, 328 student-athletes earned Academic All-Star status. This is an all-time high for Queen’s, and we continually place among the top five schools in Canada. This achievement, combined with the on–field performance of our student-athletes, reflects the fact that our university is the home of scholars and champions. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes! I would also like to thank the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes, and to the success of our programs. I am looking forward to the 2015-16 season, to the performances of our athletes and teams, to hosting the 2015 CIS Women’s Rugby Championships, and to the revitalization of our stadium – it will be a great year for the Gaels! To our student-athletes: all the best with your exams and your future athletic and academic endeavours. Go Gaels Go!

LESLIE DAL CINExecutive Director,

Athletics and Recreation

I would like to offer my congratulations and thanks for an exciting 2014-15 season of Gaels sports. I am immensely proud of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and teams who represent Queen’s as both fierce competitors and outstanding ambassadors. Kudo’s to Men’s Rugby, Women’s Fencing and Cycling who all captured repeat championships and to women’s squash who stood atop the podium for the first time since 2009. Equally impressive is the number of talented student-athletes who were recognized with provincial and national honours this year. Our future shines bright. My thanks to the VLC and our entire varsity community for your continued support to charities like Run for the Cure, Martha’s Table and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club; and for your new social media initiatives such as Mental Health Doesn’t Care and Get Real initiatives. Through your efforts you are making an impact on our campus and in our community.

My sincerest thank you to our dedicated coaches, team captains, support staff, alumni and team supporters who come together to make the Gaels varsity environment inspiring, rewarding and remarkable. This is a tradition, legacy and winning edge that sets us apart. For those of you receiving awards this evening, congratulations to you and your teammates on these accolades - they are especially notable given the immense competition, stature and accomplishments of your peers. I wish you the very best of luck with your exams and I look forward with much anticipation to the start of the 2015-16 season.

Go Gaels Go!

The Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) exists as a forum for varsity athletes to discuss the athletic experience at Queen’s, provide recommendations to Queen’s Athletics & Recreation and facilitate interaction between all varsity student-athletes.

The council aims to promote a positive image of Queen’s student-athletes and build relations within Queen’s University and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and community programs.

Finally, the VLC aims to foster a student-athlete culture through team building events and support at home competitions.

Thank you for all of your support and participation this year. Congratulations to all of our athletes on your contributions to the Queen’s and Kingston communities.

Thank you for making the VLC’s third year a success!

SEASON RECAPHosting their annual Tindall invitational, Queen’s men’s basketball picked up the top placing in the tournament with a 2-1 record while Greg Faulkner was named MVP and Dan Thompson an All-Star.

The Gaels struggled out of the gate but after an overtime loss to Brock they bounced back to pick up a pair of wins at the ARC over York and Algoma.

They carried the momentum into the second semester starting out with a 90-63 win over Nipissing. With the playoff race heating up Queen’s took an incredible road win against Western thanks to a last second buzzer beating lay-in from Sukhpreet Singh.

The Gaels playoff hopes came down to their final game of the regular season as they visited Toronto but they could not keep pace and fell 87-79.

Faulkner finished off his Gaels career earning his first OUA First-Team All-Star nod while Kingston native Tanner Graham was named to the All-Rookie team.

SEASON RECAPThe Gaels once again hosted their annual Tindall Invitational welcoming Acadia, Laval and Thompson Rivers to Kingston. Queen’s swept the field and won the tournament with ease.

Injuries slowed down the Gaels out of the gate as they dropped three of their first five games. Queen’s rebounded and after two wins to close out the fall term, the Gaels added another four straight to open up January.

The Gaels finished 2nd in the OUA East with an 11-8 record and entered the playoffs as the 7-seed. The Gaels hosted the 10-seed Laurentian at the ARC and got by them with an 80-52 win.

Next up was a battle at Laurier with the 2-seed and No.6 team in Canada. Queen’s battled back from a 14 point deficit and outlasted Laurier in double overtime 85-78.

In the OUA Final Four the Gaels drew the 3-seed Ryerson Rams but were unable to return to the OUA final, falling 69-60.

SEASON RECAPComing off their best regular season since the Vanier Cup year of 2009, the Gaels had their work cut out for them heading into 2014. The young team graduated an all-star studded group from last year’s Yates Cup Finalist team and saw four players graduate to the CFL.

The participation of an ineligible player in the first two games of the season was an early setback for Queen’s, who had to forfeit a win against Windsor in their season opener. The Gaels rebounded from a rough start to play an improved brand of football in the latter half of the season. A close 28-19 midseason loss to the OUA’s top team, McMaster, turned Queen’s season around, as they finished the year on a three-game winning streak.

The final run, where Queen’s outscored their opponents 141-52, started out with a 48-27 win at home against Toronto. The following week the Gaels entertained a sold out crowd during homecoming at Richardson Stadium with a dominant 57-10 win over the York Lions. In the final game of the season at Carleton, which will forever be dubbed the vuvuzela game, the Gaels shut down Carleton 36-15 ending the Ravens chance at a playoff spot.

Queen’s was honoured with four OUA All-Stars as Alex Carroll, Doug Corby, Jesse Andrews and Derek Wiggan received the distinction while Jason Shamatutu and Michael Moore were named to the OUA All-Rookie team.

SEASON RECAPThe Gaels looked to improve upon one of their best seasons in team history coming into 2014-15 despite having a young group.

The Gaels took wins in three of their first four games but a mid-season six game slide set them back. Thankfully for the Gaels they were able to finish the regular season strong winning their final four games which included a Carr-Harris Cup win over RMC and a win over No.8 ranked UQTR.

In the playoffs the Gaels dropped the opening game of their quarter-final series after a late goal put Laurentian ahead. With the tough task of taking two in a row from the Voyageurs Queen’s was up to the task. The Gaels won 3-1 and followed with a 2-1 overtime win to seal the series. In the East semifinal series against McGill the Gaels gave them everything that they could handle but were edged 2-1 and 3-1 dropping the series.

A pair of rookies lead the Gaels and were recognized for their efforts as Spencer Abraham was named the CIS Rookie of the Year and along with teammate Darcy Greenaway a CIS All-Rookie.

SEASON RECAPThe Gaels locked up the third place spot in the OUA this season after finishing with a 16-5-3 record while finishing in a tie for first in the OUA in scoring.

The Gaels started off the season winning their first five games of the year. They then took an overtime win over the OUA leading Mustangs to end the Fall portion of the schedule thanks to captain Shawna Griffin with the exciting finish.

SEASON RECAPThe Queen’s men’s rugby team successfully defended their OUA Championship to extend their title streak to three straight. The program also moved into a tie with Toronto for the most amongst any school with 21.

The Gaels started the season strong winning their first three matches before suffering their first loss since September of 2012, coming up just short 18-13 to McMaster.

The tricolour then finished out the regular season with four straight wins for a 7-1 record. Drawing the Marauders in the playoffs on home turf at Nixon Field Queen’s sent a message to the league with a dominant 61-0 win.

In the OUA Championship they persevered climbing back from a 16-0 deficit to take a 32-23 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.

Jacob Rumball was honoured as the OUA MVP and six Gaels were named to the OUA All-Star team.

SEASON RECAPComing off their first OUA title in program history the Gaels entered the season with a target on their backs. Things got off to a good start with a 61-12 win in their home opener on September 6.

The Gaels suffered their first regular season loss since 2011 as they visited McMaster who bested Queen’s by just one point 21-20. From there Queen’s finished off with three straight wins, including a 50-19 triumph over Western in their first night game at Nixon Field.

In the playoffs Queen’s dispatched York in the quarter-finals 41-21 and drew Guelph for a chance to return to the OUA Championship. The Gryphons stayed ahead and took the win 29-21 and a banged up Gaels team then travelled to London to take on Western in the OUA bronze medal game but were narrowly edged out 22-19.

Two Gaels were named CIS All-Canadians for their efforts as both Lauren McEwen and Gill Pegg received the honour. McEwen established a new scoring record for Queen’s and has scored 179 points in her career.

SEASON RECAPFinishing at 9-2-5, the Gaels men’s soccer team closed out the regular season at third in the OUA East for the second consecutive year. Queen’s keepers Maxfield Materne, Taylor Reynolds, and Daniel van Woerkens combined for nine clean-sheets this season, tied for second in the OUA.

The Gaels had some impressive results during the regular season, including a 2-1 win late in the year over Ryerson, who was ranked No.4 in the CIS. In the first round of the OUA East playoffs, the Gaels needed a stunning goal from Chris Wellsman in extra time to get past Nipissing in a 2-1 win.

Queen’s squared off against an underrated Toronto side, which finished just ahead of the Gaels in the regular season standings, in the OUA East quarterfinal. After Toronto went ahead early, Queen’s was unable to find an equalizer, being eliminated on the 1-0 loss to the eventual OUA bronze medalists.

Due to the Gaels strong play throughout the season, five members of the squad were named as OUA All-Stars.

SEASON RECAPWith a 9-4-3 record, women’s soccer locked down the fourth spot in the OUA East for the second consecutive year.

In the first round of the OUA East playoffs, Queen’s hosted the Carleton Ravens and went to penalties for the fifth consecutive game in the playoffs. After going scoreless through regulation and extra time, Laura Callender, Melissa Jung, Brittany Almeida, and finally Tara Bartram scored from the spot, while Tyrell made one save as the Gaels picked up the 4-2 PK win.

Queen’s drew a matchup against the No.1 Ottawa Gee-Gees in the OUA East quarterfinal for the second consecutive year, having beaten the country’s top team in penalties last year. In 2014, the Gee-Gees avenged last year’s result by eliminating the Gaels 1-0 on a goal in the 30th minute.

Midway through the season, Jackie Tessier became the program’s all-time leading scorer, finishing her Queen’s career with 55 goals. Other Gaels who enjoyed individual success this season include Jessie de Boer, who was named a CIS All-Canadian, Jung and Almeida, who both joined de Boer as OUA All-Stars.

SEASON RECAPIn its third year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) continued working towards connecting Queen’s athletes with the Kingston community.

This year Queen’s student-athletes supported many great organizations including the Run for the Cure in which Queen’s teams raised over $50,000 led by the men’s rugby team.

This year’s annual Martha’s Table basket collection gathered 52 individual baskets, six family baskets along with an additional $450 raised.

The Gaels Shoot for Literacy program saw great success as athletes visited Kingston-area schools to promote literacy while the Mental Health Awareness day saw support to raise awareness about mental health.

It is our hope that community involvement will continue to grow and become a fundamental component of the Queen’s student-athlete experience.

THE GRADUATING ‘Q ’ AWARDSuccessful, Strong, Bold, Proud, Inspiring, Perseverant… these are the attributes of Queen’s student-athletes. The Graduating “Q” Award embodies these qualities and signifies the development a student-athlete experiences while at Queen’s.

This award is made from slate, a metamorphic rock that has undergone alteration through heat and pressure to form its current state. Slate also symbolizes a record of performance and represents a new beginning. Graduating student-athletes have been tested by the combined rigors of athletics and academics during their career at Queen’s. The personal growth you have experienced as a student-athlete has prepared you for success in future endeavours.

The Graduating “Q” is a constant reminder of your experience as a student-athlete. The commitment, perseverance, joy, pain, and ultimately the successes you have achieved are all represented by this award. Presented to graduating athletes who have contributed to Queen’s for a minimum of three seasons, this award is a reminder that recipients are ‘Forever a Gael.’

Athletes receiving this award are denoted throughout this book with a “Q” beside their name.
