He is a man who started small, dreams big used

a combinationof grit and preseverance to create

one of the countrys largest corporate groups and

the Worlds No. 1 Two wheeler company.

HISTORY

Instinctive from a young age, Brijmohan lall made a rather

unusual start in life. Around the time when the freedom

movement in India was taking shape in the late 1920s,he walked

into a newly opened GURUKUL(Indian heritage school) near his

home in Kamalia(now in Pakistan).He was only six years old.

Thus began an extraordinary tale of courage and preseverance.

Brijmohan began his business story after partition in 1947, when

he and his brothers relocated to Ludhiana. The family set up a

company that provided poor people with basic transport(cycles).

About B. M. Munjal -

B. M. Munjal (Brij Mohan Lall Munjal) is the Chairman of the Hero Group. He is

a first generation entrepreneur who started very small and through sheer hard

work and perseverance made it to the top. Today, Hero Group is the largest

manufacturer of two-wheelers in the world and Brij Mohan Lal Munjal is the

man widely credited with its success.

B.M. Munjal's journey began in 1944 at the age of 20. Brij Mohanlall along with

his three brothers, Dayanand , Satyanand and Om Prakash, moved from his

birthplace Kamalia in Pakistan to Amritsar. The brothers started supplying

components to the local bicycle business.

After partition in 1947, the family was forced to move to

Ludhiana. The town of Ludhiana was already a major hub of the

Indian bicycle business and an important textile center. The

Munjals slowly spread their bicycle component distribution

network in other parts of the country and became one of India'slargest bicycle parts suppliers.

In 1952 Munjals made a shift from supplying to manufacturing.

They started manufacturing handlebars, front forks and chains.

In 1956, the Punjab state government announced the issue of twelve new

industrial licenses to make bicycles in Ludhiana. The Munjal brothers cashed on

this opportunity & set up Hero Cycles. Hero Cycles was registered as a 'large-

scale industrial unit' and it initially produced 7,500 units per year. Soon Hero

Cycles started giving well-established players such as Raleigh, Hind Cycles,

and Atlas Cycles

What set the Munjal brothers apart from their contemporaries was their

gumption and the ability to swing tides in their favour. While, government

regulations may have stifled their growth, Brijmohan Lal started travelling

across the length and breadth of India, scouting for new possibilities. It

was during one such trip that he got the idea to manufacture bicycles.

In 1959, he made his first trip beyond India to Germany & bought a

complete chain-making plant for Rs 3 lakh.

By 1971, the Munjals had set up a rim-making division for Hero

Cycles and launched another company called Highway Cycles that

would make freewheels -- it was then that Brijmohan Lal restructured

and streamlined Heros rapidly expanding business.

Within a span of 6-7 years, production at the Hero Cycles plant

doubled and in 1975 it became the largest manufacturer of bicycles in

India.

The Hero Group emerged a bigger, bolder player in the world of two-

wheelers in the early 80s. The first mega milestone of the decade

was the decision to join hands with the Japanese automobile giant,

Honda. And thus Hero Honda was born.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

When Brijmohan and his brothers started out ,there was no concept

of organized dealer networks. Brijmohan built a series of bonds and

networks with hundreds of family members, vendors, dealers and

employees. Much like the Japanese keiretsu system, these networks

are now the that holds the Hero Group together.

Thank to the relationships that we have nutured so passionately in

the Hero Family, the younger generations of some of our bicycles

dealers have become dealers of Hero Honda.These relatonships have

survied through generations through bad times and good time.

STAYING AHEAD

Brijmohan Lal always visualize the applicability of technology before

others could. For example, in the 1980s, when all two-wheeler

companies in India opted for two-stroke engine technology,

Brijmohan preferred a four-stoke engine - a technology that

dramatically increased fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.This technology was one of the biggest reasons for Hero Hondas

scuess.

Brijmohan managed to steal a march over his industry peers. Forexample, when Honda Motors of Japan was looking for a collaborator

in the 1980s, the Hero Group was not high up the pecking order

initially as there were other more eligible and established suitors.

Received The Lifetime Achievement award for

Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi conferred him with a Doctorate;

degree of"Doctors of letters"Honoris Causa in October 2004.
