    By Aaron DodsonAssistant Sports Editor

For two weeks, the NorthCarolina football team prac-ticed tirelessly, looking to reju-

venate its offense while prepar-ing to face Georgia Techs run-heavy, triple-option attack.

But when the time expiredin last Saturdays game againstthe Yellow Jackets, the statsheet showed the Tar Heelshad surrendered 428 total

yards of offense while failingto score in the second half.

UNCs two weeks of hardwork had been renderedmeaningless as the 28-20 lossto Georgia Tech dropped the

team to 1-2 on the season.

The Tar Heels, however, are in a familiar position. Lastseason, the team headed intoits fourth game of the year

with the same record, andthen defeated East Carolina

27-6 the first of four con-secutive wins.Saturday, UNC will face the

Pirates again, hoping to bounceback from a rough start to theyear just as it did last season.

As you can expect, comingout of the game that you feltlike we had plenty of chances to

win, on Sunday ... it was like wewere at a funeral. But I thoughttoday was good, offensivecoordinator Blake Andersonsaid after UNCs first practiceof the week Tuesday.

We were in a really similarplace a year ago Im justreminding them we ralliedfrom that we got betterevery week.

    Preparing to face a pass-

first East Carolina offense, different from what the TarHeels saw in Georgia Tech, coach Larry Fedora said theteams defense has to com-pletely shift its focus, going

back to what it worked on atthe start of the year. Its from one end of the

spectrum to the other so thedefense has to make a quickturnaround, he said. T heyvegot to put everything out oftheir head that theyve been

working on for the last twoweeks and go back to whatweve done from the begin-ning all the things weve

worked on during fall camp. While the Tar Heels have

struggled on offense this sea-son, senior quarterback BrynRenner sees Saturdays gameas the perfect opportunity toreturn to the high offensivestandard he and the team set

    last season.

Like last season, UNCwill play the Pirates

    with a 1-2 record.

Tar Heels in familiar place against ECU

    dth file/Chris Conway

Quarterback Bryn Renner has picked up two wins against ECU as

a starter, passing for 321 yards and two scores in last years win.

expects of his entire team.We talked about in fall

camp, we were working for aseason, not one game.

But for UNC, in a similar

place as last year, one gameagainst East Carolina couldmean the difference.

    In 2012, UNC averaged 40

points a game compared to just23 in three games this season.Every time you step out,

you get on a little roll, and Ithink thats what were going totry to do this weekend, Rennersaid at a press conferenceMonday. For us, its a confi-dence builder. How quickly are

we going to respond? We started off great against

Georgia Tech but didnt finishit ... everyone wants to get that

bad taste out of their mouth asquickly as possible.

As UNC attempt to reboundfrom a disheartening loss toGeorgia Tech, shifting its strat-egy to accommodate ECUsstyle of play, Fedoras advice

to the defense reflects what he
