Some Interpretations of the Grand Canyon 大峡谷的一些解释 “Grand Canyon is a puzzle, a mystery, an

enigma. It appears to have been carved through an uplifted plateau, ignores fault lines, may have been born by a river that once flowed the other way, is possibly quite old or quite young – or both – and is set within a more mature landscape.” (Wayne Ranney, Carving Grand Canyon: Evidence, Theories, and Mystery, Grand Canyon Association, AZ, 2005, p.19)

Some Interpretations of the Grand Canyon 大峡谷的一些解释 “The evolutionists are stumped because there was

no river there when the plateau was uplifted. However, if the plateau was uplifted at the end of the Flood, then the floodwaters rapidly draining off the emerging land surface would have stripped the plateau bare to give it its flat top. Everyone generally agrees that sheet erosion on a massive scale has removed thousands of feet of strata from above the rims of the canyon—strata that outcrops to the north and south of the Grand Canyon, for example, in Zion National Park to the north and Flagstaff, Arizona, to the south,” geologist Andrew Snelling remarked.

Some Interpretations of the Grand Canyon 大峡谷的一些解释 “Some gully erosion would have occurred across

the plateau as the last of the floodwater drained west toward the Pacific Ocean. However, the floodwater flowing from east to west would have been blocked by the rising plateau and would have been dammed up to form a huge lake system. With heavy rainfall occurring intermittently in the early years after the Flood due to the climate instability, the water level in that huge lake system would have continued to rise until it reached the top of the natural dam wall.

plateau, it would have utilized any gullying already eroded there, and the volume of water cutting through pre-existing gullies would have increased as further erosion started to rapidly occur. The net result would have been a catastrophic down-cutting into the plateau to form the Grand Canyon. The final “trickle” of leftover waters would have then become the Colorado River,” continued Snelling.

timescale would not allow this to happen. If it were feasible, the evolutionists would argue the plateau was uplifted slowly so that the Colorado River eroding through the plateau could keep pace with the slow uplift. But it is simply not reasonable for them to argue that, as the evidence does not support it. As I said before, it is agreed upon that the plateau was uplifted first, and the Colorado River now does a sharp right-hand turn into the plateau and through the Grand Canyon.

evolutionists. That’s why the catastrophic formation of the canyon is still a valid argument based on sound evidence. And the fact that the plateau is higher in the center is icing on the cake,” the geologist Dr. Andrew Snelling concluded. Snelling authored two volumes of hardcover “Earth’s Catastrophic Past,” which are 1,128 pages in length.

Flat Gaps Between Strata 地层平面之间的差距The geologist Dr. John D. Morris published a

short article in the May 2012 issue of Acts and Facts. He made the following observations:

Geologists observe rocks based on color, density, mineral and fossil content, hardness, and more.

Numerous local outcrops may result in large- scale maps and cross-sections. Both small- and large-scales are necessary, but big-picture of strata and timing of deposition help to explain both the rock and the conditions of formation.

Flat Gaps Between Strata 地层平面之间的差距He noted that layers come in packages of strata

called megasequences that are bounded on top and bottom by evidence of rapid erosion. The depositional package of sediments overlies a recognizable unconformity or erosional plane and is truncated at the top by another unconformity. Geologists identify at least 6 megasequences that comprise all sediments. The packages persist across the continents, often ignoring the standard geologic column. Nearly all sediments were either water-deposited or water-eroded. Was this the Flood?

Flat Gaps Between Strata 地层平面之间的差距The chart shows various layers (brown), the

erosional unconformities (wavy lines), and the strata that are missing (cross-hatched). Such charts can be drawn anywhere. Many sedimentary layers in sequence and the erosional gaps between them. The layers actually lie on top of each other, but they are drawn separated in time. More of the geologic column is missing than is present. This is true anywhere in the world.

are evidence of erosion. But obvious evidence of erosion is missing! Evolutionists assign the “time” between two layers as 10s of millions of years, but the contacts are typically flat and featureless. Millions of years of erosion would produce irregular terrain, but there is none—no stream beds, valleys, or canyons.

time gaps that span the continent, creating doubt about the passage of a long time period and implying dynamic flood waters.

“Expending geologic knowledge has made regional maps and other data available. Geologists should no longer restrict their focus to a single outcrop or hand specimen while ignoring larger implications. Creation/catastrophic thinking should no longer be excluded,” concluded Dr. John Morris.

Cavitation 气蚀The geologist Dr. John D. Morris wrote a short

article on “Cavitation” in the August issue of Acts and Facts, a publication of ICR.

He noted that the Grand Canyon could not have been carved by the Colorado River. Something of a much larger scale accomplished this!

“Creationists assign most sedimentary rocks to the great Flood of Noah’s day, which then eroded as the Flood ended and the waters rushed off the rising continents.

Cavitation 气蚀“Seeming problems arise in attributing all this

erosion to the short time period assumed for the Flood and the centuries following.

“Cavitation, a process well-studied by engineers and geologists today, is known to be quite capable of eroding huge volumes of rock and concrete quickly. As water moves at a high velocity over a rough surface, vacuum bubbles form and implode with such a great force that they fracture the adjacent rock, thereby accelerating erosion.

Cavitation 气蚀“The US Army Corps of Engineers reckons that

cavitation was the culprit that eroded enormous thicknesses of reinforced concrete and the surrounding rock under a spillway draining Glen Canyon Dam in 1983, just upriver from Grand Canyon.

“The dam has been constructed to protect the Colorado River and Grand Canyon below from intermittent water floods. But spring runoff was threatening to overtop the dam and send enormous volumes of water downstream, possibly inflicting much damage to the dam and inhabitants below.

Cavitation 气蚀“To minimize the damage, the overflow spillways

were opened, draining the excess water in a controlled fashion. Soon, clear lake water gushed from the tunnels as if from a giant hose.

“On June 15, 1983, after four days of release, the lake level continued to rise, and flow through the spillway increased. All appeared to be going well, but seismographs sensed something more substantial was happening underground. Suddenly, the exiting water turned muddy red—the color of the underlying rock—and huge chunks of rock and concrete were thrown out.

Cavitation 气蚀“Before they could close the spillway, water flowing

at a rapid velocity had eaten through the spillway’s thick reinforced concrete casing and opened a huge chasm in the rock beneath. Within minutes, a cavern 32 x 40 x 150 ft had been excavated. Cavitation had eaten through the 3-ft-thick, steel-reinforced concrete lining of the tunnel and into the underlying rock. It is possible that cavitation was pulverizing concrete, steel, and sandstone at a rate in excess of 1,000 cu ft per minute during the peak period of erosion. 63,000 cu ft of concrete was required to fill this this enormous hole.

Cavitation 气蚀“Never again can we doubt that dynamic moving

waters are capable of doing extensive geologic work in a hurry, even under “normal” conditions. We are still left to ponder the effects of the much more intense great Flood, which would have produced erosion on an even grander scale with waters flowing at much greater sustained volumes and velocities,” concluded geologist Dr. John Morris.

Zircons: God’s Tiny Nuclear Laboratories 锆石：上帝的微小核实验室The physicist Dr. Russell Humphreys published a

short abstract in the May/June 2012 issue of Creation Matters. He said that God designed zircons as microscopic nuclear laboratories to show some amazing things He did with radioactivity.

In molten granitic rock today, most ions are silicon and oxygen. Some zirconium, uranium, thorium, lead and other ions are also present. The first crystals start forming are zirconium silicate because zircon has the highest melting point of all the minerals common in granite.

Zircons: God’s Tiny Nuclear Laboratories 锆石：上帝的微小核实验室Each zirconium ion has a +4 electric charge,

giving it 4 chemical bonds to combine with silicon and oxygen ions to form a crystal lattice.

The uranium ions also have a +4 electric charge and 4 chemical bonds, and about 20% larger than the zirconium ions. As the crystal forms, it will pick up to 4% of the zirconium lattice sites. In fact, most of the uranium in crustal granites is concentrated in zircons.

Zircons: God’s Tiny Nuclear Laboratories 锆石：上帝的微小核实验室Most common lead ion has only +2 electric

charge and is more than 40% larger than a zirconium ion. This makes it difficult to fit into the lattice. Laboratory experiments with zircons forming in lead-enriched molten rock show that the zircons absorb very little lead.

Most of the uranium is the common uranium isotope, uranium 238.

Zircons in pre-Cambrian granites have some lead. Most are lead 206, the isotope decayed from uranium 238. A small amount of lead 204 is also found in the zircons.

208 is found also. Lead 207, the decay product of rare uranium 235, is found is small amounts.

Zircon is also a very hard crystal with a tight lattice, so once it has solidified, very little uranium and lead can enter or leave it.

8 helium atoms are formed for every uranium 238 atom decays into lead 206. Helium atoms are light-weight, fast-moving, and not chemically sticky, would depart from microscopic zircons in only thousands of years.

Zircons: God’s Tiny Nuclear Laboratories 锆石：上帝的微小核实验室Several highly regarded laboratories have

measured the helium contents of several zircons. Their migration rates were also measured. It has been concluded that the zircons could not be millions of years, because most helium atoms would be gone. The amount of helium atoms present only justify only thousands of years for the zircons to exist.

Most of the lead by nuclear decay of uranium 238 were results of accelerated nuclear decay in the past. The young helium diffusion ages confirm this.

Could Magnetic Monopoles Cause Accelerated Decay? 磁单极可能会导致加速衰退？Physicists Brice Oliver and Eugene Chaffin

published a technical paper on the above subject on pp. 204-211 in Volume 48, Winter 2012, No. 3 of the Creation Research Quarterly.

The abstract states that “we study the effect of superheavy magnetic monopoles on nuclei such as aluminum-26 and potassium-40, to see if the rate of beta decay is enhanced by the nearby passage of a magnetic monopole. Following an idea of Carrigan (FermiLab), we consider the possibility that monopoles are trapped in the earth’s interior by a balance between gravitational and magnetic forces from the earth’s fields.

Could Magnetic Monopoles Cause Accelerated Decay? 磁单极可能会导致加速衰退？“Magnetic reversals such as those considered by

Humphreys sent the monopoles to the surface during the Genesis Flood, causing nuclear decay rates to seem to accelerate. We use theory developed by Lipkin in the 1980s to treat the theory of perturbation of the decay rates by the monopoles. We show that the monopole velocities attained during a field reversal are sufficient for them to escape during the Flood, but not large enough to produce tracks in rocks and minerals similar to fission tracks.”

monopole hunters suddenly improved. Theoretical treatments appeared, giving monopole solutions without the singularities in Dirac’s mathematical treatment. Working independently, Gerard’t Hooft of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and Alexander M. Polyakov of the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics near Moscow found certain theories that not only allow magnetic monopoles but also demand them.

called grand unified theories combining electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear forces. These theories predict the existence of magnetic monopoles, although their mass-energy is of the order of 1011 GeV (Rubakov, 1981a, 1981b; Preskill, 1979, 1984; Carrigan and Trower, 1982). This is a very large value, beyond the capabilities of present-day accelerators. (The most powerful CERN accelerators only produce 600 GeV.)

monopoles with mass-energies less than 600 GeV. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is now operational, but the mass of the monopoles predicted by the grand unified theories is so large that there is not much hope that a monopole will be detected. The interaction of a magnetic monopole with a magnetic field is much more robust than the interaction of an electric charge with an electric field.

monopoles passing near to a nucleus could induce a beta decay to occur. Ordinary beta decays are thought to be spontaneous, but in the high magnetic field produced by the monopole, the decay rate is accelerated. Lipkin (1949) and Merzbacher (1951) showed that high-energy photons could not accelerate decays to any appreciable extent. However, the theory allows monopoles to succeed where other candidate particles do not.

decay and/or alpha decay. Beta-minus decay is a process whereby a neutron turns into a proton and emits an electron and an antineutrino. The process whereby a nucleus undergoes beta decay has to do with the quarks that make up a proton and a neutron. Modern studies show beta decay occurs when a quark change flavor from down to up. The W particle is the particle that decays into an electron and an antineutrino. Allowed and forbidden decay are involved in radioisotope dating (Chaffin, 2005).

change is zero and the spherical symmetry is conserved. Forbidden decay occurs when isotopes violate several factors, such as change in parity and spherical symmetry, or the angular momentum changes by more than one quantum number. Nuclear beta decay transitions of isotopes proceed at rates that depend on the squares of quantities known as matrix elements. These matrix elements are usually derived from perturbation theory, which is used to find solutions to complicated quantum systems.

or mixing different types of systems. Lipkin used perturbation theory to explain the mixing of nuclear wave functions by a superheavy monopole with a strong magnetic field as it approaches the nucleus of an atom (Lipkin, 1983, 1984). He predicted the closer a monopole approaches the nucleus, the faster the nucleus would decay. Lipkin also considered the effect of a magnetic monopole passing near an aluminum-26 nucleus.

needed for Lipkin’s calculation were obtained with the nuclear wave functions by a method called “shell model method,” along with experimental data of the values of magnetic moments. These experimental values were taken from 25Al and 25Mg, thus providing input data to give accurate calculations within Lipkin’s theoretical treatment. The shell method incorporates shells denoted by s, p, d, and f, corresponding to different orbital angular momenta quantum numbers.

undisturbed log ft value of 14.2 to obtain the amount of acceleration of the decay (Lipkin, 1983).

“To calculate the probability of the monopole causing the nucleus to decay, time dependent perturbation theory is used (Griffiths, 2005, Chapter 9). The main effort involves finding the “matrix element” of the monopole perturbation operator between two states, the ground state and the intermediate state that the monopole excites the nucleus to before it undergoes beta decay to an energy level of the daughter nucleus Argon-40.

For a monopole in thermal equilibrium with the liquid core at a temperature of 4000oK, the monopole thermal velocity is on the order of 10-2 cm/sec. Likewise the average mass drift velocity in the core is on the same order. On the other hand if an axial field of 100 gauss is present the characteristic monopole velocity might be 105 cm/sec based on extrapolating the Ahlen energy loss formula to low beta values. With the complex coiled field geometry fully on, monopoles would move to equilibrium positions probably near the surface of the solid core or the inner surface of the mantle in about one year.

the monopoles could reach the earth’s crust well inside the time frame of a yearlong, worldwide flood. Hence, magnetic reversals during the Flood seem to be capable of causing the monopoles to pass near and thereby to influence crustal rocks in accord with our general scenario.

goes into elastic collisions with nuclei, producing displaced atoms directly. This “nuclear” component of energy loss, Sn, has its peak value for ion velocities 10-3 c. For a bare monopole, Sn is far too small to form a track and Se is also too small except at velocities v ~ c.

“Since our characteristic velocity of 105 cm/sec is about 10-5 times the speed of light, c, these monopoles moving with this speed will not produce permanent tracks in rocks and minerals.

monopole within the one year of the Flood, then this would indicate that the flux would have to be 2.242x1017 monopoles/cm2. This is a relatively large flux and indicates that a large number of monopoles would have been trapped inside the earth and brought to the surface by the field reversals during the Flood.

“Our study shows that magnetic monopoles can attain velocities in the right ranges to be able to escape the earth’s interior during magnetic field reversals, but yet slow enough that they do not cause permanent tracks in rocks.

causing rocks that contain potassium-40 to undergo an accelerated decay. Our cross section and flux values show that numerous amounts of monopoles would have increased the accelerated decay of potassium-40. The small time factor for monopoles to reach the surface shows that they could contribute to accelerated decay during magnetic field reversals and thus the Genesis Flood.” This concludes the paper by Oliver and Chaffin.
